Stephen Morris was leaving the Tottenham v Bournemouth game on August 30 last year and heading for the Tube when he became involved in argument with another supporter, Ipswich Crown Court was told.

Morris was caught on CCTV throwing a single punch at the man which caused him to fall back and hit his head on the ground, said Juliet Donovan, prosecuting.

He was unconscious for two and a half minutes and couldn’t remember anything about the incident.

Morris, 41, of Kingfisher Drive, Great Blakenham, admitted an offence of assault by beating and was given conditional discharge for 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay £1,000 prosecution costs and £1,000 compensation to the victim at the hearing on Thursday.

Sentencing him, Judge Samantha Leigh said he was found as a result of the incident being caught on CCTV.

She said Morris had no previous convictions and she had read a number of character references.

“I’m pretty sure you’re not going to be before the courts again,” she added.

The judge said she didn’t think it was necessary to pass a Football Banning Order.

Peter Spary for Morris, who was in the army for 14 years, said his client was a senior lead programme manager for the NHS and the offence was completely out of character.

He said Morris, who has two children, had been going to the Tottenham ground for a number of years and to some Ipswich Town games and had never had any issues.

He said on this occasion there had been some barging or elbowing in the queue heading for the Tube. “He is extremely remorseful,” said Mr Spary.
