Tottenham Hotspur will have to fork out in excess of £25 million to sign Celtic attacking mainstay Daizen Maeda.
According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs keen on signing Japanese forward Daizen Maeda on the back of his sensational 2024/25 season with Celtic. While the Scottish giants are reluctant to sell, they could consider cashing in on him if an offer of over £25 million is put forward.
O’Rourke’s take on Maeda’s future
While speaking about the 27-year-old’s future, O’Rourke said: “I don’t think Celtic would be prepared to entertain offers for him – he’s been a revelation.
“Maeda is such a key player for this Celtic side. Brendan Rodgers will be looking to build around him, not lose him – definitely not, unless it’s huge, huge money.
“You’d be looking at £25million plus, to even make Celtic think that they should cash in on Maeda. It doesn’t surprise me that there’s Premier League clubs looking at him.
“It doesn’t surprise me that Brentford are looking at him. There’s also been talk that Tottenham, West Ham, Fenerbahce are all admirers of the Japanese International.”
Maeda joined Celtic at the start of 2022 from Yokohama. While it was an initial loan deal, the move was made permanent the following summer. The Japanese international has only gone from strength to strength over the years.
Following Kyogo Furuhashi’s departure last summer, Maeda became the main man at Celtic under Brendan Rodgers, and he has certainly lived up to the expectations. The 27-year-old was on fire as he scored 16 league goals. Overall, he contributed towards 45 goals (33 goals, 12 assists) in his 51 outings.
Tottenham keen on signing Maeda
While he prefers playing on the left flank, he can pretty much feature anywhere in attack. His exceptional performances have put him on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur, who are looking for more quality in the final third.
Thomas Frank wants to add more goals to his squad, and he is looking for more competition on the flanks as well. Maeda can certainly help their cause amidst uncertainty around Son Heung-min’s future. Even if the South Korean international ends up staying for another season, the 27-year-old could still prove to be a valuable addition to their squad.
However, acquiring his services won’t be easy, as he is a very important part of Rodgers’ plans, and he has no intentions of letting him leave. The former Liverpool boss wants to build a team around the Japanese international and is hoping the Scottish club rejects all offers for him.
