De Zerbi can bin Kolo Muani by starting £30m Spurs star who's "Mbappe 2.0"

For the first time in a long while, there looks to be a semblance of a plan emerging at Tottenham Hotspur, with Roberto De Zerbi's side putting in a much-improved performance in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion.

There was an energy and freshness to that weekend display, a far cry from what has been seen of late, with the reintroduction of Xavi Simons providing that much-needed spark off the left.

Off the right, however, the anonymous outing from Randal Kolo Muani highlighted that there is still plenty of work to be done for De Zerbi to truly steady this sinking ship, the Frenchman registering just 19 touches in that lifeless 57-minute outing.

Still stuck on just a solitary league goal for the season, the on-loan striker has been a dismal signing, it must be said, with the new Spurs boss needing to find an alternate solution in the forward line next time around.

Why the right wing could be now Spurs' biggest issue

After so much chopping and changing under Igor Tudor, there is more of a settled feel under De Zerbi, with the backline almost picking itself at present, even if Kevin Danso did endure a late lapse in concentration at the weekend.

In midfield, there are now a plethora of options amid the return of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur, while Simons' impactful display on the left showcased why that could be the Dutchman's permanent home moving forward.

More is expected of starting number nine, Dominic Solanke, after netting only 12 league goals since the start of last season, although it is the right-wing berth that will have De Zerbi scratching his head.

It's been a luckless campaign with regard to injury at N17, none more so on the flanks, with Dejan Kulusevski having not featured since May, Mohammed Kudus enduring a setback in his recovery and Wilson Odobert now a long-term absentee following his ACL blow.

Having also sold last season's top scorer, Brennan Johnson, back in January, there is no clear or standout candidate for that right flank, with much of Spurs' best work on Saturday coming down Simons' left.

Kolo Muani - who is set to return to Paris Saint-Germain this summer - registered just a solitary shot and failed to complete a single key pass or cross before his swift withdrawal, again highlighting why a permanent stay will not be a consideration at the end of the season.

Experimenting with the centre-forward in this wide role just isn't working right now, ensuring De Zerbi needs to make a change.

Spurs' answer to Mbappe could now replace Kolo Muani

The final days of Tudor saw the Croatian take on an experiment of his own after deploying both Pedro Porro and Djed Spence down that right flank, albeit with neither man surely the answer in what is a more attack-minded, high-press approach under De Zerbi.

Seeking alternatives to Kolo Muani from the start then, the ex-Marseille boss might instead look to the man who replaced him at the weekend, in the form of £30m man Mathys Tel, with the Frenchman having come off the bench in each of the last two games.

That had come after something of an injury issue during the international break, although now fit and firing again, Tel could be the solution that De Zerbi is looking for to complete his attacking trio.

Previously hailed as being like "[Kylian] Mbappe 2.0" or Spurs' "own version" of the Real Madrid star by analyst and Como scout, Ben Mattinson, the 20-year-old has yet to really showcase his sky-high potential over an extended period, so often flitting in and out of the starting lineup.

A starter on just nine occasions in the Premier League in 2025/26, the former Bayern Munich starlet has at least chipped in with three goals in that time, while also flourishing in the recent win over Atletico Madrid under Tudor.

Part of a front three that included Simons and Kolo Muani on the night, Tel did drift over to the right to tee up his compatriot for the game's opener, supplying a delightful dinked cross into the penalty area.

That moment of magic highlighted what the youngster can offer as a right-winger, mirroring the aforementioned Mbappe in being able to operate all across the frontline if required.

With his devastating speed and dribbling prowess - having averaged 1.2 successful dribbles per game this season - the one-time Rennes wonderkid could be the difference-maker De Zerbi is looking for.

Indeed, the Italian previously revealed that he had tried to sign the young marksman during his time in charge at the Stade Velodrome.

The 46-year-old is evidently a fan, with now the time to thrust Tel into the action, thus ending this flawed Kolo Muani experiment and putting the final nail in the coffin on the striker's forgettable loan spell in north London.
