Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to lose a member of their coaching staff ahead of their clash against Liverpool.
Spurs sit 11th in the Premier League table after suffering a 3-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest. As a result, head coach Thomas Frank has started to come under pressure among sections of Tottenham fans.
Spurs have won just one of their previous seven league matches, although Frank has called for time in the North London hot seat. Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League last season and despite winning the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou was axed as boss.
Certainly, a victory over Liverpool - unbeaten in their past five games after a 2-0 win over Brighton - would ease pressure on Frank. However, Tottenham’s preparations for Saturday’s encounter may be disrupted slightly as Frank may well have to save goodbye to one of his coaches.
Reports suggest that assistant coach Matt Wells is set to take up the No.1 job at Major League Soccer outfit Colorado Rapids. ESPN suggested that Wells will move to America following the clash against Forest, meaning that he is unlikely to be part of the preparations for the Liverpool game. On Wells’ expected departure, Frank said after the Forest defeat: “There's definitely a few rumours about that. We will, how can you say, when we know if that will happen or not happen, we will announce it.”
Speaking on Wells’ impact earlier this season, Frank said: “Matt Wells has done a top job on that side - the high pressure, the middle pressure, the lower block, defending the box, the mentality to make blocks, it’s so important.”
Frank only took over the Tottenham hot seat in the summer after leaving Brentford. The Dane has been calm and collected despite the recent run of results, although he claimed that there is a ‘hurricane inside me’.
“I think I do everything to control my emotions, which is a hurricane inside me because, of course, it's deeply frustrating that we're not doing better today after three good performances,” said Frank at his post-match press conference.
“I think it's extremely important to be calm and measured, and of course have very, very direct and clear messages at the right time, so they're not in doubt of what I think. And very honest about where we are. That's why I was also very honest today. It was a very bad performance. No two ways about that.
“But also know that to change this, this will take some time. Because no one wants to hear about that. It's just reality. I think the ones who have followed the club and the team, I think it's fair to say there's been a few not-too-consistent performances and that's a thing we are working very hard on.”
