Tottenham have some big decisions to make when rebuilding their squad.

Tottenham Hotspur’s squad rebuild is in full flow after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.

The North Londoners have announced the signing of Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool, whilst agreeing a deal with ex-Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi. The club chiefs are also pushing hard to sign Manchester City winger Savinho and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in big-money deals.

It is understandable why Roberto De Zerbi has prioritised defensive reinforcements, but Spurs also need fresh blood and energy up ahead in midfield and attack. Tottenham’s midfield was getting outrun and outwitted before De Zerbi’s arrival. The Italian had very little time to solve the problems, but at least he gave stability to the team’s engine room.

Joao Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur and Conor Gallagher became mainstays in the middle of the park. However, with Palhinha’s future yet to be resolved, and Yves Bissouma’s contract expiring at the end of June, Tottenham are planning to bring in a new central midfielder.

Tottenham learn valuation of Como midfielder

It has been claimed over recent days that Spurs have expressed an interest in Como midfielder Martin Baturina, who has enjoyed a fantastic maiden season in Serie A since moving from Dinamo Zagreb last summer. The Croat delivered eight goals and four assists in 34 games in all competitions, playing a key role in Como’s Champions League qualifying campaign.

This has led to interest in the 23-year-old from several European clubs. According to respected Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio, two Premier League sides have made approaches to sign Martin Baturina, with Como having received offers of around €50m-€55m.

Cesc Fabregas’ Como have rejected those offers, but the names of the Premier League duo haven’t been revealed. Di Marzio adds that the Serie A outfit have slapped an €80m price tag on the creative midfielder following his eye-catching breakout season in Italian football.

Spurs have reasons to ignore €80m transfer

Baturina may well turn out to be a quality all-action midfielder, but there are a couple of very good reasons why Spurs should not look to complete a deal.

Firstly, Tottenham already have two young central midfielders in the form of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, who must get regular opportunities next season. Then there is the money it will cost to sign the Como man. The asking price slapped on Baturina is huge, and there are plenty of other areas for the Lilywhites to spend such big money on this summer and not splash it all on a player lacking experience at a high level.

Plus, there are doubts over whether the Croatian international would be able to handle the pace, aggression and physicality of the Premier League. Keeping all such factors in mind, Spurs must avoid breaking the bank for Baturina.
