A Football Association appeals panel has rejected Tottenham Hotspur’s appeal of Rodrigo Bentancur’s suspension for racist comments made about Son Heung-Min and South Korean people this past summer.
According to The Athletic, Tottenham had appealed Bentancur’s seven match ban and was attempting to have it reduced to the minimum penalty of six matches. Had the club been successful it would have meant Bentancur would be available to play again in league action in the upcoming match against Liverpool on December 22. Bentancur has already served five matches of his suspension; as of now, the earliest he could return is the Boxing Day fixture against Nottingham Forest.
Bentancur was suspended following a lengthy inquiry after a video emerged on a Spanish language YouTube video where he “joked” that his teammate Son Heung-Min and other South Koreans “all look the same.” The FA determined that he was in violation of FA policies and issued the seven match suspension and a £100k fine. Son has said that he and Bentancur have already resolved the issue and that he and the team consider the issue behind them.
Bentancur has continued to play football for Tottenham in the Europa League.
