Tottenham winger Mathys Tel has emerged as a target for some European clubs.

There is still time for the summer transfer window to officially commence, but Tottenham Hotspur have already wrapped up two deals in the form of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi. They are also in talks to sign Manchester City winger Savinho and Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

The Spurs officials are trying to wrap up deals for major summer targets as early as possible to back Roberto De Zerbi. Simultaneously, they have to sort out the futures of several existing players in the squad. One of those is Mathys Tel.

Mathys Tel struggled to nail down a place in the Tottenham first XI this past season. Since De Zerbi’s appointment, though, the France Under-21 international enjoyed a new lease of life. The unfortunate ACL injury to Xavi Simons opened up the door for the Frenchman to walk into the starting XI and get a run of games. And he got exactly that, allowing him some consistent minutes under his belt.

Despite finishing the season on a high note by helping the Lilywhites preserve their top-flight status, Tel’s future has been called into question. The France Under-21 international is frustrated with his limited role and is considering a move away from N17 in search of regular first-team football. He isn’t short of suitors across Europe.

FC Porto are interested in signing Tel, who could depart on loan with an option to buy. Turkish champions Galatasaray are considering approaching Spurs to understand the financial details required to sign the 21-year-old, whilst Bournemouth are also keeping tabs on him. Amid the rising interest, Tottenham’s stance on Tel has emerged.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham would prefer to ‘retain’ Tel as part of their long-term project under De Zerbi. The youngster signed a contract until 2031 last summer, so there is no real hurry for them to sell. However, a loan with an option to purchase or a straight sale in the £30-40million bracket has been discussed within the N17 offices.

Although his numbers of four goals and an assist in 31 Premier League outings weren’t great this past season, it is worth remembering that he is only 21 and remains a bright prospect. De Zerbi appeared to be happy with the Frenchman’s qualities on and off the ball and would be keen to keep him in his squad.

Yet, there remains a possibility that the Tottenham bosses decide to cash in on Tel while his stock remains high.
