Question marks remain over what comes next for Tottenham defender Ben Davies after he was a notable absentee in a club statement on Saturday morning. Now that the 2024/25 season has come to a close for the football club, Spurs announced that a handful of their first-team players will be moving on this summer following the conclusion of their contracts.
Fraser Forster, Alfie Whiteman and Sergio Reguilon will all exit and become free agents on July 1. Timo Werner will also be playing his football elsewhere next season after Tottenham elected against making his loan deal permanent.
Spurs also confirmed that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will join Marseille permanently after initially heading to the south of France on loan last July. One player joining Tottenham on a permanent basis is Kevin Danso as the agreement with RC Lens contained an obligation to buy in the summer for £20.9million.
Mathys Tel also joined Tottenham on loan in the January transfer market and the club have the option to purchase the Frenchman for £45.7million on a six-year contract is they so wish. There was no mention over whether Tel will sign permanently or return to parent club Bayern Munich, with confirmation likely to arrive in the weeks ahead as Tottenham announced in Saturday's statement that "further squad updates shall be provided in due course".
Davies is also in the same boat as Tel right now as fans are waiting for confirmation as to whether or not he will be remain as part of the first-team squad for the 2025/26 season and possibly beyond. Out of contract this summer after 11 years in N17, football.london reported in November that Spurs had decided to take up a one-year contract extension option on his contract, keeping him at the club for next campaign.
Whereas there was an announcement in January about the club exercising the option to extend Son Heung-min's contract by an additional 12 months, the club have not done the same regarding Davies. That in turn has left things up in the air.
What Saturday's club statement does hint at is that Davies could have a Tottenham future beyond this summer. After all, he would have been named in the statement along with Forster, Whiteman, Reguilon and Werner if he is to depart, that is of course unless the club are planning on a separate announcement as he has served Tottenham so well after joining from Swansea City all the way back in 2014.
The fact that there was no mention of Davies may hint that a new contract is on the cards as he is still such a valuable part of the squad due to his experience and versatility. It could also give Tottenham a bit more time to make a final decision on Davies as they plan for the years ahead.
The 32-year-old still has a part to play at Tottenham with a busy calendar once again on the cards in 2025/26 but it will all come down to what the player and club want to do. Wrexham have been linked with a move for Davies following their promotion to the Championship as they target a place in the Premier League.
A move to the Racecourse Ground would give the experienced player the opportunity to play regularly and also return to Wales after departing the country in 2014. All eyes will be on what comes next for the long-serving defender.
