Tottenham’s transfer window may have fallen below some fans’ expectations.

After appointing a new manager and qualifying for the Champions League, some supporters might have expected a procession of world-class players marching through the door.

It hasn’t been quite like that. Mohammed Kudus has arrived from West Ham and was superb on his debut.

Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel have made their loan moves permanent, while Palhinha has been signed on a season-long loan.

Still, the news announced on Monday regarding Cristian Romero is arguably their best bit of business of the summer.

Romero commits to Tottenham with new four-year contract

At one point, it seemed likely that Tottenham would sell Cristian Romero. Atletico Madrid were interested in signing him and Spurs were seemingly seeking replacements.

Nothing came of that interest, though, and Romero was given the captain’s armband for Tottenham’s first competitive fixtures.

Now, he has committed his long-term future to Spurs by signing a new four-year contract.

Romero has likely become one of the highest earners at Spurs, but it should prove to be worth every penny based on how he has previously performed in North London.

His leadership will prove to be particularly crucial moving forward.

Addressing this part of his game recently, Thomas Frank said: “There is a big respect for him from the players. Off the pitch as well, he also sets the standards.

“His aggression is phenomenal. He is fantastic in the duels. When he gives that to the team, he can transform the team and give energy to the team so I think that’s extremely important.”

Romero can become Tottenham legend

Romero was named the Player of the Tournament in the Europa League. He was arguably Tottenham’s best player by a country mile last season.

Ange Postecoglou blamed Tottenham’s particularly poor form in the middle of the season on a first-team injury crisis.

Romero was out for several months during that time, and it was him that Spurs missed more than any other player.

No matter how much money was offered for Romero, Tottenham would have struggled to buy anyone who could have as much of an influence on the team as he does.

Now, Tottenham can look forward to the World Cup winner continuing to have that positive influence for many years to come.

Romero has already made an impact on Tottenham’s history by helping them win the Europa League.

If he sees out his contract and Tottenham continue to progress, there’s no reason why he can’t be deemed a club legend in the future.
