Monaco have approached Pape Matar Sarr’s representatives over a potential loan move for the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Discussions have taken place regarding the French club’s project and the Senegal international’s salary, although no agreement has yet been reached.
The development follows reported interest from Galatasaray, leaving Sarr facing an important decision over his future in north London as the transfer window approaches its conclusion.

Monaco Make Approach for Sarr
Monaco have identified Sarr as a potential addition to their midfield and have contacted his representatives to discuss a possible move to Ligue 1.
According to Romano, discussions have centred on Monaco’s plans for the midfielder and the financial package that could be offered to the 23-year-old.
At this stage, the talks have not resulted in an agreement, with the proposed move understood to be a loan rather than a permanent transfer.
Sarr joined Tottenham from Metz in 2021 and has since established himself as a regular member of the first-team squad, making 141 appearances in all competitions.
The midfielder has also earned 42 caps for Senegal and was part of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.
His previous experience in France could make a move to Monaco an appealing proposition, particularly if he is seeking regular first-team football during the 2026/27 campaign.

Increased Competition
Sarr’s immediate prospects at Tottenham have become less certain following a summer of significant investment in midfield.
Spurs have added Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes to their midfield options, while Conor Gallagher, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Rodrigo Bentancur are also competing for places under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
The increased competition could make regular starts difficult to guarantee, particularly with Tottenham not competing in European competition this season.
Sarr was not included in the matchday squad for Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Brentford, although De Zerbi suggested before the match that the midfielder had been experiencing some discomfort with his hamstring.
The Senegal international will therefore be hoping to force his way back into De Zerbi’s plans, but Monaco’s interest could provide him with an alternative route to regular football.
Sarr previously enjoyed a successful spell with Metz, making 55 Ligue 1 appearances before completing his move to Tottenham, meaning a return to France would not represent an entirely unfamiliar challenge.

Could a Loan Suit All Parties?
A temporary move to Monaco could potentially benefit both Sarr and Tottenham if an agreement can be reached before the transfer window closes.
For Sarr, the opportunity to play regularly in Ligue 1 would allow him to maintain his development while competing for a place in the Senegal national team. Monaco could also offer him a prominent role in a side competing near the top of French football.
Tottenham, meanwhile, would retain control of a player who remains under contract until 2030 and could reassess his situation next summer.
There is also the possibility that Sarr could work his way back into the Spurs side with a successful loan spell, particularly if Tottenham qualify for Europe and have more fixtures in 2027/28.
Monaco could be looking for further midfield reinforcements due to uncertainty surrounding Lamine Camara, who has been linked with a move away from the Stade Louis II before the transfer window closes, with multiple Premier League clubs interested.
Tottenham Decision Still to Be Made
For now, Monaco’s approach remains at the exploratory stage and there is no agreement in place for Sarr to leave Tottenham.
The midfielder’s situation is nevertheless one worth monitoring, particularly with the competition for places having increased significantly following Spurs’ summer recruitment.
Whether Tottenham are willing to sanction a loan, and whether Sarr sees Monaco as the right destination, could determine whether the latest interest develops into a concrete move before the transfer window closes.
