Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has confirmed that Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall was not fit to train on Wednesday, but Spurs fans need not be worried about the midfielder’s fitness.
Lucas Bergvall has arguably been Tottenham Hotspur’s most consistent performer over recent months alongside Djed Spence, with the 19-year-old making himself undroppable with his energetic and enterprising displays in the middle of the park.
There is understandably a lot of excitement surrounding the 19-year-old, who appears to have all the raw materials to evolve into a world-class midfielder.
The teenager might have been keen to take his form onto the international stage, but he may have to wait just a few days longer as he is now at risk of missing Sweden’s upcoming friendly.
Lucas Bergvall misses out on first Sweden start through illness
Spurs fans might have been concerned when they saw reports that Bergvall did not train with the Sweden squad on Thursday. The last thing that the Lilywhites need right is to lose the teenager to an injury at the business end of the season.
However, Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson later revealed that the Tottenham man was only ruled out from training due to illness.
Tomasson told Aftonbladet about Bergvall: “We are one player short today, we will see how he feels tomorrow. He has a cold and is not in top form. Now he had to stay in bed, so we will see how he feels during the day.

“We will have to wait and see how the match goes on Saturday, we cannot decide that now. He could have maybe been a little bit involved today, but there is no reason to take any risks.”
Sweden have since confirmed via their official website that Bergvall will miss the game against Luxembourg with ‘cold symptoms’. However, the Spurs starlet may still be able to play some part against Northern Ireland next week.
Sweden boss explains why Bergvall is doing something special
Speaking earlier this week, Tomasson revealed that Tottenham told him just how unpreceded Bergvall’s success is in his debut Premier League season.
He explained that the North London club spoke about the fact that players coming straight from Scandinavia almost never hit the ground running in the English top flight.
Tomasson said: “I’ve spoken to Tottenham too and they told me a story that I actually didn’t know: That the last player to go from a league in Scandinavia straight to the Premier League and play this much in his debut season was Daniel Agger. Many years ago. That says a little about Lucas’ performance as a very young player.”
