It has been a transformative few weeks for Tottenham Hotspur. Despite a dismal Premier League campaign under Ange Postecoglou, losing 22 out of 38 games, the Australian guided Spurs to a Europa League triumph. By beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final, Postecoglou became the first manager to win anything with Spurs in 17 years.
His league form, though, was too poor to be ignored by the club’s ownership. In early June, the club made the decision to dismiss Postecoglou and as such, the Lilywhites are on the search for a new manager. Recent reports have suggested that Tottenham are close to agreeing a contract with Thomas Frank.
Manager of Brentford since 2018, Frank has taken the Bees from being a Championship side to an established Premier League outfit. The Dane, who openly admitted to adjusting his coaching philosophy upon promotion, has continued to surpass expectations with Brentford, who secured a top-half finish last season.
Should Frank move to Spurs, then he will certainly need signings, especially as he would be coaching in the Champions League for the first time. In order to best translate his ideologies into his new squad, there is one particular player that Spurs should target.
Spurs Should Sign Gyokeres
Striker could be ideal for Frank’s system
Since joining Sporting in 2023, Viktor Gyokeres has developed into one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe. The Swede has been a lethal goalscorer for Sporting across the last two years, helping them win two league titles in that time whilst captivating the attention of many teams in Europe.
Fichajes have reported that Gyokeres is Tottenham’s “great priority” and while Gyokeres may be somewhat expensive, it is thought that £60 million could be enough for the striker.
Dominic Solanke enjoyed a solid debut season for Spurs, but Frank may feel that a more experienced option, in terms of European football, would be a necessity. At Brentford, strikers were often the players to develop the most under Frank, with examples such as Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane WIssa.
Gyokeres, who has been dubbed a "monster" for his form, has proven that he is a reliable goalscorer and prolific from the penalty spot, with Frank having focused on the importance of dead ball situations with the Bees. Not only that, but Gyokeres, while a seasoned finisher, can also pop up with assists, just as Harry Kane once did for the club. Gyokeres is expected to be on the move this summer and if Spurs can convince him into a move, then it would be an exceptional signing for Frank.
