Tottenham are not resting on their laurels as they close in on Conor Gallagher’s signature.
Shortly after winning their first major trophy in 17 years by lifting the Europa League last May, Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham following a poor Premier League season.
Tottenham then swooped for Brentford boss Thomas Frank as his successor, and while they started the season brightly, their fortunes have tailed off since then.
Spurs currently sit 14th in the Premier League, and speculation has mounted that Frank could be sacked after their FA Cup loss to Aston Villa last weekend.
However, in more positive news, they appear to be on the cusp of signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Gallagher for £34million.
MORE SPURS STORIES
It seems, though, that Tottenham are eager to make more January signings as a crucial second half of the season gets underway.
Tottenham eye Neymar’s Santos teammate and a forward
When Destiny Udogie headed to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium from Udinese in 2022, it looked like they had a real prospect on their hands.
Quick, powerful, and with the ability to produce lung-busting runs with apparent ease, the Italian seemed primed to keep Spurs’ left-back spot for years to come. Fast forward to the present, though, and Udogie may be set to leave Tottenham.
After falling out of favour under Frank, Tottenham are now pursuing Neymar’s Santos teammate Souza as a left-back replacement.
And according to Sky Sports, the north London team are finalising a deal for the 19-year-old – who made 29 appearances and scored one goal as Santos maintained their place in the Brazilian top-flight in 2025.
The report adds that they are also looking for another forward, without specifying who that may be.
Incidentally, there is no guarantee the young Brazilian will hit the ground running under Tottenham boss Frank. But in their current position, he may have to.
Frank wants Tottenham signings after reshaping attack
Over the summer, Tottenham spent big on winger Mohammed Kudus and attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, while striker Randal Kolo Muani joined on loan.
But between the three of them, they have mustered a paltry three goals in the Premier League this season.
Moreover, Kudus is out with a thigh injury until April and other than striker Richarlison (seven), no other Tottenham teammate has scored more than three Premier League goals.
It is understandable, therefore, that Frank said at the end of December: “Of course the window will open and we will be in the market and see if there’s anything we can do.
“But it needs to be something where we think it can clearly improve the team, if not I’d rather want to wait. But we will be out there.”
Spurs decided to sell winger Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace earlier this month for £35m, and with Kudus out for a while, they may need another forward option.
Whether Frank’s side gets that is uncertain.
