Tottenham Hotspur have officially parted ways with Ange Postecoglou after just two seasons in charge, bringing an end to a turbulent spell that delivered both European glory and domestic disaster.

Speculation has been rife about the future of Ange Postecoglou following a mixed finish to the 2024/25 season, which saw the Australian deliver on his second-season promise after he won the UEFA Europa League one month ago.

However, domestically, Tottenham suffered their worst ever finish in the Premier League, as they ended the campaign in 17th place, lost 22 matches and finished with a negative goal difference.

For a club of Tottenham’s stature, that record is far from acceptable, and it has now seen manager Ange Postecoglou come under intense scrutiny, despite winning the Lilywhites their first trophy in 17 years and their first European honour in over four decades.

Tottenham sack Ange Postecoglou after two seasons

Following weeks of media speculation, it has now been confirmed that Ange Postecoglou has been sacked after two seasons in the Tottenham dugout.

The Australian manager now joins a long list of 15 managers who have received the sack under chairman Daniel Levy, in his 24 years at the helm of the club.

Postecoglou took charge of 76 Premier League games during his time at Tottenham but ended with a disappointing record, losing 34 matches and winning 31, with the rest ending in draws.

He has now been relieved of his duties and is expected to receive a six-figure sum of £7 million following his dismissal, with Tottenham set to pay Postecoglou a full year’s salary of £5 million, along with a £2 million bonus for winning the Europa League.

Tottenham released an official statement on Postecoglou’s sacking, explaining why they made the tough decision:

‘Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties.

‘Ange joined us from Celtic in the summer of 2023 and oversaw a period of change on the pitch, returning us to the attacking brand of football that has traditionally been associated with the Club, while writing a new chapter in our history by leading us to UEFA Europa League glory in Bilbao last month – an achievement that will live with us all forever.

‘We are extremely grateful to Ange for his commitment and contribution during his two years at the Club. Ange will always be remembered as only the third manager in our history to deliver a European trophy, alongside legendary figures Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw.

‘However, the Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place. Following a positive start in the 2023/24 Premier League (PL) season, we recorded 78 points from the last 66 PL games. This culminated in our worst-ever PL finish last season.

‘At times there were extenuating circumstances – injuries and then a decision to prioritise our European campaign. Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph.

‘It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude.

‘We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision. We have a talented, young squad and Ange has given us a great platform to build upon.

‘We should like to express our gratitude to him. We wish him well for the future – he will always be welcome back at our home.News on the appointment of a new Head Coach will be announced in due course.’

Spurs now focused on managerial search after Postecoglou exit

Tottenham’s focus would now turn to securing the services of a new manager, with reports linking the Lilywhites with several different options in recent months.

Brentford’s Thomas Frank remains in the running after it was reported that Tottenham have held talks about their project with the Bees manager.

Former Inter Milan boss has also been linked with Spurs and could be an option following his departure from the San Siro after losing the UEFA Champions League final 5-0.

It remains to be seen who Tottenham appoint next, but they would need to act swiftly as the north club now prepares for a crucial summer rebuild.
