Tottenham are said to have slapped a big price tag on one of their World Cup stars this summer. Spurs are in the midst of a club record-setting window, spending more than £235million so far, and they are not done yet.
Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke have taken up the bulk of that spending, and with the defence and midfield taken care of, Roberto De Zerbi is now turning his attention to the front line, with a winger and potentially a striker on the wishlist.
But there could yet be exits, with Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero and Lucas Bergvall likely at the top of the most likely to depart list, while there could be others who are snatched away.
Spurs slap big price tag on Djed Spence
According to Football Insider, Tottenham are asking for £40million to sell Djed Spence this summer, with the England World Cup star having been a key player for them.
Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke said on their Transfer Insider podcast: "If a suitable offer were to come in, then they (Spurs) might look at it and evaluate it. There's been a lot of incoming Spurs this season, so maybe they might have to balance the books in some respects.
"But it would be a pretty hefty fee. You're probably looking at around £40million plus for somebody like Djed Spence, and whether Everton would be willing to go to those sort of figures, I'm not too sure."
Spence, described by Harry kane as "outstanding" during the World Cup, is a valuable asset, still only 25 years of age and able to play on both sides of the defence. Beyond the fact he has been an important player for Spurs, Spence has also impressed during some of his World Cup appearances with England this summer, and he had a particularly positive impact after coming off the bench in the quarter-final win over Norway.
Premier League interest in Spence
Reports this week have claimed Liverpool are interested in Spence as they look to add some speed to the full-back positions this summer. Meanwhile, their Merseyside rivals Everton have been the most heavily linked this summer. Although, that price tag could put Spence out of Everton's reach due to Profit and Sustainability rules the other business they will want to do this summer.
Spurs are also very unlikely to want to sell Spence, with De Zerbi having said before the World Cup: “He is a great guy, I love Djed as a guy… he has a big heart, he is a big player and a big guy. We are all happy that he can go play in the World Cup.”
