Joleon Lescott has named a Tottenham Hotspur defender as the most overrated player in the Premier League right now.
Tottenham Hotspur have started the new campaign strongly, picking up three wins from their opening five matches and looking much sharper than last season, when they endured a disappointing run that saw them finish 17th.
The improvement across the pitch has been clear to see, with individual performances stepping up under Thomas Frank’s guidance, and the squad appearing far more balanced and competitive than in the previous campaign.
Despite the general upturn in form, pundit Joleon Lescott has turned the spotlight on one key figure in the Tottenham side, a player he believes does not quite deserve the reputation he currently enjoys.
Joleon Lescott questions Cristian Romero’s reputation at Tottenham
Speaking on All Out Football, Lescott was asked to name the most overrated player in the Premier League. He initially responded with Moises Caicedo, though he quickly admitted that it was a wind-up aimed at the Chelsea-supporting host.
As the discussion continued, the former England international was pressed further on his choice, with the co-host putting forward both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
“The most overrated player in the Premier League is?” The host asked.

“Caicedo, no I’m joking,” Lescott said.
“Van de Ven or Romero,” The co-host said.
“Yeah, I would say Romero,” Lescott said.”
Romero’s form for Spurs paints a different picture
Cristian Romero has been outstanding so far this season, wearing the captain’s armband and leading Tottenham to three wins while the side has only conceded four goals, recording three clean sheets along the way.
Interestingly, a fellow professional has offered a different view on Romero’s place in the Tottenham side, with James Maddison previously naming Romero as the most underrated player at Spurs.
Speaking on his teammate earlier this year, Maddison said: “Underrated? Cristian Romero. Top, top centre-back. For some reason in England, I feel like he has the perception of being a hot head who gets a lot of red cards and is not disciplined, but it is the opposite, he is a World Cup winner, and he is a top player.”
