Tottenham have launched a €30 million bid for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo.
Tottenham Hotspur have submitted a formal bid of €30 million plus €5 million in performance-related variables for Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo, according Managing Barca, as Roberto De Zerbi pushes hard to add physical presence and elite defensive quality to his rebuilt backline.
The approach represents a significant statement of intent from a club that has moved swiftly since survival was confirmed. Araujo, 27, is a Uruguayan international who has been one of Barcelona’s most commanding defensive presences in recent years, combining genuine physical dominance with the kind of aggressive, recovery-based defending that has made him one of the more highly regarded centre-backs in European football.
However, compared to the force to be reckoned with he was back in 2022/23 season, his performances, especially in the last season have waned.
His recent season was complicated by a loss of prominence within Hansi Flick’s plans and a period away from the pitch for personal recovery, but the quality he has demonstrated throughout his Barcelona career is not in question. De Zerbi’s reported determination to finalise the deal suggests the Italian sees in Araujo precisely the physical and technical profile the Tottenham defence requires following Cristian Romero’s confirmed departure.
Barcelona needs to generate funds
Barcelona’s willingness to listen to proposals is driven by the practical realities of La Liga’s financial regulations. The club needs to generate funds to register new signings, and Tottenham’s offer of €35 million in total has reportedly triggered genuine internal debate at the Catalan club, with part of the board viewing it as a pragmatic solution to their immediate liquidity requirements.
The sticking point will be Barcelona’s valuation. Deco and the board are unlikely to part with a player of Araujo’s calibre at what they may consider an undervalued price, and the Tottenham bid may require improvement before a deal can be agreed. The player himself has previously expressed a strong desire to remain at Camp Nou and fight for his place, though the financial reality of Barcelona’s situation and the Premier League’s commercial pull may yet prove persuasive factors.
With Marcos Senesi already confirmed and Andy Robertson set to arrive, adding Araujo would give De Zerbi one of the most improved defensive units assembled in the Premier League this summer.
