Mathys Tel can play a key role in Tottenham Hotspur‘s fight against relegation.

The French winger pumped up the atmosphere at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a superb effort that opened the scoring against Leeds.

However, he was later at fault for the equaliser, as his high foot was penalised and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored from the penalty spot, and needs to step up against Chelsea and Everton.

He is one of the most exciting players on Spurs’ books, and he has real potential, which could blossom in North London.

Tottenham face a decision on Tel, whether to put their faith in the 21-year-old or leave him as a rotation option for the time being.

What was said about Tel’s Tottenham error vs Leeds

John Wenham has backed Tel to go and secure his place in the starting line-up at Tottenham after the draw with the Whites.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “He has shown lots of endeavour so far, but maybe missed that end product, that goal against Leeds was fantastic.

“It caused an absolute eruption from the South Stand, not just because of our predicament, people were genuinely happy for him.

“Really unfortunate that later on in the game, he made that mistake, but I put that down to age and inexperience, I know he has played for big clubs, Bayern Munich and Tottenham already, but he just needs consistent gametime.

“I hope next season, we can provide him with the platform to play week in, week out, on the left, as we’ve been crying out for someone to grab the position since Son left.

“He got an assist against Aston Villa for Richarlison, then scored against Leeds, if he follows that up with some more goals or assists against Chelsea and Everton, he’ll be in a really good position to establish himself in the team going forward.”

Why Tel deserves time at Tottenham

While it was a costly mistake, ultimately, Spurs not winning was not just down to Tel.

They did not create or score enough, and allowed the visitors back into the game, despite the Elland Road side having nothing to play for.

That is not solely on the French winger’s shoulders, and he should be given time to develop into the star that Spurs expect him to be.

He has notched four goals and two assists so far this season in 36 appearances, which is not a bad return, considering how poor the team has performed.
