Atlético Madrid connections have spent the early part of this close season making rather a lot of noise in respect of Cristian Romero leaving Tottenham. So far, the evidence has pointed in this direction, with Cuti having made several posts on social media that suggested his head may have been turned.
It must have been a challenging time for the player, hearing so many kind words coming from a club that has successfully hosted so many fellow Argentinians.

Now it emerges that journalist M.M Talavera has told the leading sports night radio in Spain, El Larguero, that the all but signed and sealed deal isn’t happening, after all.
The suggestions are that Atlético de Madrid have ruled out the signing of Cuti Romero, and ambitions to secure the player will not be realised this summer. It’s Tottenham who have won the tug of war, and they are seeking to renew the Argentine centre-back’s contract. Talavera says that Atlético de Madrid is already working on other alternatives.
Quite how this pans out remains to be seen, but it may be the case that Atlético and, indeed, other suitors may want to see a little bit more from Cuti, given the significant size of his prospective transfer fee.
Romero’s second season at Tottenham barely got going, and he took forever to return from injury. In a climate where clubs are forever seeking to ensure value for money, it may be the case that Romero failed to get the juices flowing significantly enough.
Either way, this window is nowhere near closing, and situations could yet change. It is interesting to hear a voice of dissent in the debate.
