Tottenham Hotspur are 1/2 favourites with the bookies to gain their first win of the league season when they come up against Coventry City tonight, but I’m not sold on the home side.

This promises to be an intriguing contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (kick-off, 8pm) and I’ve picked out three football betting tips.

Confident Coventry carry real threat

Tottenham Hotspur may take confidence from their late equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Manchester United nine days ago – a match they should have won.

But the fact is, they remain winless – and in the bottom three – after six league games this season, and tonight’s fixture does not look like a good match-up for them.

Prior to the weekend’s action, Tottenham ranked fourth for possession in the league this season, having an average of 58.8 per cent of the ball, while Coventry ranked 19th on 38.2 per cent.

It seems clear how this game will play out. Tottenham will have to break down the Coventry block, while the visitors wait for their opportunities.

But it’s a scenario that has not suited Tottenham this season – three losses and three draws illustrates that – whereas Coventry have started to enjoy success when presented with this dynamic.

Frank Lampard’s side lost their first four league fixtures of the campaign, but their first game was away to the champions Arsenal (3-0).

The Sky Blues then lost 1-0 at home to Hull City, but it was their turn to have the ball and try and break down a low block, which didn’t suit them.

Coventry later lost only 1-0 at Manchester City and even their 5-0 home defeat by Brighton wasn’t that bad considering they were up against one of the best teams in the league and had a player sent off with the score at 2-0.

They finally got their league season moving with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest and followed up with a 4-1 home win over Newcastle United – and in those games they had just 37.6 per cent and 32.7 per cent possession respectively.

Coventry did ‘lose’ the xG (expected goals) count both times, but they will be growing in confidence, while the hosts have the burden of expectation. An away win looks a fair enough price.

Goals at a premium in north London

Ahead of the weekend’s games, Tottenham and Coventry both ranked in the league’s bottom three for xG. And while I think there may be some value in taking the visitors to collect all three points, if they do so it’s unlikely to be by a big margin.

Yes, they put four past Newcastle last time, but the first of those was a penalty and it wasn’t a ‘4-1’ game judged on the quality of the chances. Coventry’s earlier 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest may be a better example of how this game could unfold.

Tottenham have scored only three league goals all season and all of them came when they were chasing the game.

As such, there being fewer than three goals looks a reasonable price at odds against.

Bet builder picks

For my bet builder, I’ll look to play the goals market a bit safer, taking under 3.5. On a similar theme, I’m also adding ‘no’ as the outcome in the ‘both teams to score market’.

I’ve already made the case for this potentially being a low-scoring affair and with these selections I’m not relying on a Coventry win.

Of course, that would be nice given I’ve already recommended them to win the match, but they are the outsiders so it would feel a bit too ambitious to also put them in the bet builder.

I did toy with adding Coventry ‘draw or win’ in the ‘double chance’ market, which is a 6/4 shot, but I’m sticking with just the win single.

I do, though, have one more selection for this football bet builder tip and that’s Spurs to receive at least one yellow card.

Tottenham fans can’t have been happy with an apparent lack of bite from their side in the first few matches, with Roberto De Zerbi’s men picking up just four cautions from the opening five league matches while earning just two points and scoring only two goals.

However, they looked much more up for the fight against Manchester United, collecting three bookings and a red card.

They will want and need the same intensity in front of their own fans this evening, and the chances of cards may increase if Coventry prove frustrating opponents.
