Tottenham Hotspur’s past transfer dealings could be the club’s biggest constraint in the summer transfer window.

The summer transfer window is now open, and for the Lilywhites, they can begin to make signings before the window closes again on 10 June, before reopening on 16 June and closing finally on 1 September.

Of course, Tottenham are expected to be busy this summer, with reports revealing that Spurs are looking to strengthen three positions ahead of the new campaign.

However, the Lilywhites have already been handed a quadruple blow this window, one that would leave fans worried, as a few of their targets now look to be heading elsewhere.

Tottenham still owe £330m in unpaid transfer fees despite Champions League windfall

Securing UEFA Champions League football has improved Tottenham’s chances of signing a higher calibre of player, with the lure of top-level European football set to be an extra bargaining chip.

The financial reward of at least £40million is expected to be added to Tottenham’s coffers as a result of securing a place in next season’s Champions League, is another huge boost for the north London club.

BBC Sport have now revealed Tottenham’s biggest constraint in the summer window could be unpaid transfer fees proving to be the main obstacle.

Tottenham can strengthen their squad, however, they still owe more than £330million in unpaid transfer fees, a considerable proportion of which are due in summer 2025 and may limit their spending power.

Spurs still active in transfer window despite debt concerns

Regardless of the constraint, Tottenham have already completed their first piece of business this summer, with the club finalising their £21million obligation to buy Kevin Danso from RC Lens, a clause that was inserted in the centre-back’s winter move.

The club have also made their first sale of the window, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg completing his move to French side Marseille for £17million.

A few players have also left on a free transfer, with Sergio Reguilon, Fraser Forster, Timo Werner and Alfie Whiteman all departing following the expiration of their contracts.
