Tottenham’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest has intensified scrutiny on goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher launching a fierce critique of the Italian’s performance and behaviour during the match.

Carragher argued that Vicario not only contributed to the chaos defensively, but also showed a worrying habit of deflecting responsibility when goals go in.

“Typical Vicario, he’s always blaming someone else. Every time I see him when a goal goes in, he’s throwing his arms at someone else. Just kick it out of play,” Carragher said while reviewing the game.

The comments come after one of Spurs’ worst results of the season at the City Ground.

Carragher calls out Vicario after Forest defeat

Tottenham’s 3-0 loss saw defensive errors pile up, with Forest exploiting gaps, hesitation and miscommunication at the back — much of which originated from Vicario’s decisions under pressure.

Carragher highlighted one incident in particular, where Vicario attempted to play out from the back while Forest pressed aggressively. Instead of clearing his lines, the goalkeeper hesitated, played a risky pass, and left his defence scrambling. Seconds later, Forest capitalised and doubled their lead.

For Carragher, the mistake itself wasn’t the only problem. It was Vicario’s reaction.

The pundit criticised the goalkeeper for immediately signalling frustration at teammates rather than acknowledging his own role in the breakdown. According to Carragher, this has become a pattern both in this match and others this season.

Tottenham’s defensive structure - already fragile - was repeatedly exposed as Forest’s intensity overwhelmed them, and Vicario’s decision-making only heightened the problems.

Pressure grows on Spurs’ No.1 after heavy defeat

While Vicario has often been praised for his reflexes and shot-stopping, Tottenham’s collapse at Forest has renewed questions about whether he is suited to the high-risk, possession-driven approach Thomas Frank wants from his goalkeeper.

The 3–0 defeat was more than a poor result - it was a reflection of deeper issues. Spurs struggled to build from the back, lost confidence early, and never recovered control of the match. Vicario’s uncertainty only added to the sense of instability, and Carragher’s challenge publicly spotlights what many fans have been feeling for weeks.

With Tottenham slipping and pressure on Frank already increasing, the goalkeeper position is now firmly under the microscope heading into a crucial period of the season.

Carragher’s message was blunt: Vicario needs to simplify, take responsibility, and stop creating problems Tottenham can’t afford.

Whether the Italian responds in the coming fixtures could define Spurs’ trajectory for the rest of the campaign.
