The Tottenham Hotspur full-back impressed again from the bench but also did something that surprised some eagle-eyed viewers watching
Tottenham defender Djed Spence should get plenty of plaudits for his positive performance for England in their World Cup win against Norway but his vanishing face mask also got people talking.
The 25-year-old made a big impact with his 45 minutes or so on the pitch as he came on in the 86th minute at left-back for Nico O'Reilly and then defended superbly during extra-time as England won 2-1. Spence also made some rapid forays forward, one which resulted in a penalty overturned by VAR and another which ended up with the full-back testing Norway keeper Orjan Nyland with a low shot from the edge of the box.
The BBC viewers voted Spence as second only to double goalscorer Jude Bellingham in their ratings on that outlet's website and the more eagle-eyed of those viewers might just have noticed that the chin mask that has become synonymous with the Spurs man during this tournament went missing during the game.
Spence must wear the specially-fitted mask to protect his jaw after it was broken by Liam Delap's f lailing elbow in Tottenham's penultimate game of the Premier League season at Chelsea back in May with what the England defender later called a "crazy challenge".
Spence was wearing the mask during normal time and it could be seen as he almost diverted a Nyland clearance in added time back into the Norway net.

However, during extra-time the mask went missing with the England defender playing without it. Whether it was because the mask broke at some point or Spence simply found it too uncomfortable to wear in the high temperatures in Miami is unclear but it certainly vanished from the field of play.
"It is a little bit uncomfortable - but it is what it is," Spence said before the tournament kicked off. "I have a broken jaw so I have to wear it throughout the tournament.
"It is something I will have to get used to. It will be three months until it is fully healed, so it is a long time. It was painful, but luckily I play football with my feet and not my jaw so it is all good. I have been wearing it in training, getting used to wearing it in the heat, and trying to break it in properly. It was a crazy challenge, but it is in the past now. I've just got to focus on this tournament now."
