USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino uninterested in Tottenham Hotspur return after Ange Postecoglou sacking - 'Not realistic'

Published 08/06/2025 at 11:19 GMT+1

Mauricio Pochettino is one of the most well-regarded Tottenham Hotspur managers of recent years after his impressive spell between 2014 to 2019, which saw him reach the UEFA Champions League final in his last full season with the club. His name has been put forward as a potential replacement for Ange Postecoglou after his recent sacking, but Pochettino has no intention of leaving the USMNT.

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino said he will not be returning to Tottenham Hotspur to replace Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou was sacked on Friday after a dreadful Premier League season, finishing in 17th place.

While the domestic campaign was a disappointment to fans, the 59-year-old Australian did manage to win the club’s first silverware in 17 years when Tottenham defeated Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final, ensuring they would play UEFA Champions League football next season.

Despite that, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy moved to sack Postecoglou, meaning the north London side are now on the lookout for a new manager.

Brentford’s Thomas Frank is reportedly the frontrunner to take over, but another name in the frame is former Tottenham head coach Pochettino.

He managed the club between 2014 and 2019, taking them to a Champions League final in his last full season with Spurs.

Pochettino then moved on to spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, before taking charge of the USMNT in Ocotober 2024.

The 53-year-old Argentinian is set to oversee the USA’s 2026 World Cup campaign, taking place in North America next summer.

Speaking to the press, Pochettino ruled out an immediate return.

"Today it's not realistic," he said. "Look where I am. Look where we (his backroom staff) are. The answer is so clear.

"I think, since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list [of rumours]. I've seen the rumours, there are 100 coaches on the list. Don't be worried about that."

However, he did hint that he would consider a comeback at some point down the line, adding: "If something happens [in the future], you for sure will see.

"But I am so happy in this moment, and we cannot talk about this type of thing."
