Guglielmo Vicario says Tottenham will 'fight' for UEFA Europa League glory so Son Heung-min can be first Spurs captain in 17 years to lift trophy

Published 19/05/2025 at 13:24 GMT+1

Ledley King and Robbie Keane were the players given the honour of lifting the 2008 League Cup at Wembley - the last time Tottenham Hotspur won silverware - and Heung-min Son is hoping to be the next Spurs captain to hold a trophy aloft when they take on Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final this week. Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario spoke exclusively to TNT Sports ahead of the game.

Vicario: ‘We cannot accept’ Spurs form this season but ‘we’ve always believed in’ Postecoglou

Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario says he and his team-mates are desperate to win the UEFA Europa League in order for Son Heung-min to lift the club’s first silverware in 17 years.

The South Korean has been with the club for a decade, and finishing as a runner-up in the UEFA Champions League and EFL Cup is the closest Son has come to achieving success with Spurs.

Manchester United stand in the way of them ending their lengthy trophy drought when the teams meet in the Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Europa League

YOU DECIDE: Who wins the Europa League final? Who needs it more? Who starts?

Speaking exclusively to TNT Sports ahead of the match, Vicario said: "You will have a winner and you will have a loser.

"You won’t have Bruno [Fernandes] and Sonny lifting the trophy together. You will see just one of them.

"We want to make it happen for Sonny because what he did for this football club during these years has been amazing, so I think he deserves that, and we will fight for him as well."

Postecoglou says Europa League win ‘probably destroys 50% of the narrative’ around club

Video credit: TNT Sports

Son has had limited game time in the build-up to the final due to a foot injury, but manager Ange Postecoglou has backed him to "kick on" to be ready for the United showdown.

The Tottenham boss has faced relentless pressure this season, with Tottenham failing to perform in the Premier League, which has left them 17th in the table with one round of fixtures to play.

Despite rumours circulating about his future, Vicario says the squad has a lot of faith in Postecoglou.

"We’ve always believed in him since day one," he insisted.

"Of course, we know league-wise we haven’t performed great, this is a fact, and we are very disappointed about that because this football club cannot accept as many losses as we’ve had this season. In terms of belief, and trying what he was asking of us, we try hard every session, every game.

"The story of this season, we’re gutted about that, but we always stick together and this is the most important thing.

"He’s a very reliable man, very committed in what he tries to deliver to the players. He’s a big character, a big personality. In the meetings, in the dressing room, you can feel this big personality he has. We, of course, recognise him as our leader."

Highlights: Early goals help Spurs to crucial first-leg victory over Bodo/Glimt

Video credit: TNT Sports

Vicario is hoping there will be plenty to celebrate for Spurs in Spain this week, but there is no guarantee he will keep his clothes on, after the goalkeeper launched his shorts into the crowd in the aftermath of their semi-final second leg victory against Bodo/Glimt.

Asked what he was thinking, Vicario said: "I don’t know. I don’t have any answer.

"Just a moment of enjoyment, thanking the people that they travel over abroad just to support us so I thought it was a good moment to stay together and to have good memories about the win."

Fully clothed or not, Vicario is determined to be part of the first trophy win for Tottenham in almost two decades.

"It’s a big thing for us, we know that, we’re very conscious of that.

"We know at the end just one between us and Man Utd will win this trophy, so we will do everything to deliver that for us players, for our staff and especially for the fans because we know how much it will mean for them."

Amorim: Chelsea loss helped with team selection

Ruben Amorim admitted that Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Chelsea helped him decide who will start the Europa League final.

Chelsea scored the game’s only goal in the 71st minute as United suffered their 18th league defeat of the season.

"We have to deal with a lot of things in the summer, but today it was a really good game to prepare for the final," said Amorim.

‘They will not change’ – Amorim ‘understands’ Tottenham’s ‘strong identity’

Video credit: TNT Sports

"If we put some players out in the feeling of the last game, almost 10 days without playing, it would be a mistake.

"It was a good thing for them to play, that they feel they can do it, that we can have possession and can push the opponent. In this club, you need to win and we are not winning games.

"It helped me a lot to choose the starting XI for the final. So we'll see."

Postecoglou hopes Spurs can ‘destroy narrative’

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou says victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final "probably destroys 50% of the narrative" surrounding the club.

Spurs’ well-publicised trophy drought extends back to the 2008 League Cup final, when they edged out Chelsea at Wembley after the game went to extra time.

"It's a great opportunity," Postecoglou told TNT Sports. "Because it probably destroys 50% of the narrative that exists around the club in terms of its stature at the moment.

"It’s this constant question, well, until you actually win something everything else is irrelevant.

'Why do I care?' - Postecoglou fires back at Man Utd comparison in press conference

Video credit: TNT Sports

"It doesn't matter how nice your stadium is, the supporters, your training facilities, it doesn't matter if you have been runners-up in the league until you win something.

"So, once you do win, and this is a significant trophy, that's out of the equation. Then different questions come, and you have to kind of repeat that, but that's a different course you navigate.

"But all that stuff around, you know, that you haven't won anything, I think, disappears in one fell swoop."

Rasmus Hojlund said Manchester United have the chance to be "written into history" with victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final.

United face their Premier League rivals in Bilbao on Wednesday night - live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

And Hojlund admitted the desire to be "remembered" by the club's fans is a motivating factor ahead of the season-defining match.

"There's a lot of opinions and pressure at this football club, but then again you're going to be written into history if you do win," he said in an exclusive interview with TNT Sports' Owen Hargreaves. "That's why I'm here - I want to be part of this great club's history and want to be remembered."

Hojlund has impressed in the Europa League this season, scoring six goals from 10 starts, including a strike against Athletic Club in the semi-final second leg.

It has not always been plain sailing for the 22-year-old since his £72m move from Atalanta in 2023, and Hargreaves suggested the striker might have benefitted from being eased into the starting XI following his arrival.

Fernandes: ‘Belief’ has inspired Man Utd run to Europa League final

"You can put it in two ways - you can do it like you say [learn from other players] or you can be thrown in like I've been," Hojlund said. "I think you gain experience from both ways.

"I'm obviously not going to sit here and say I don't want to play, but then again, last year Anthony [Martial] was there and he played here for loads of years, but he was unlucky and got injuries, so I had to take a lot of the game time.

"That [Martial playing] could have been nice, especially in the beginning, because I was new and had to learn my way to be a United player, get used to these facilities and find a house and it would have been nice to have a bit of support."

Hojlund acknowledged United's difficulties in the Premier League this season, but insisted full focus is now on the Europa League.

"Domestically, it's not been great, but we're here to win trophies and if we can get that over the line on Wednesday, it's going to be an amazing thing to do," he added.

"It's going to be a big game. Two clubs obviously that have been struggling in the domestic league, but then in a European final, it's incredible.

"It's going to be an important game for both teams, a good team we're going to face, and we're looking forward to the opportunity."

Manchester United and Tottenham's Premier League campaigns both suffered more misery with defeats to Newcastle and Wolves, respectively, leaving them firmly in the bottom half of the table. But was there ever a fear that two of the league's giants could actually be dragged into a relegation battle? TNT Sports crunches the numbers as the season draws to a close.

'We need to be better' - Amorim laments Man Utd's 'mistakes' in heavy Newcastle defeat

Video credit: SNTV

It’s official. This is the worst Manchester United team since the inception of the Premier League.

A 4-1 hammering at the hands of high-flying Newcastle has confirmed that The Red Devils will finish with their lowest points total in the current iteration of England’s top division.

Ruben Amorim’s side sit in 14th place on 38 points, meaning that even if they were to win all of their remaining six matches, they would finish on 56, two shy of the 58 they collected in the 2021/22 campaign.

Things are similarly bleak for traditional ‘big six’ brethren Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently a point and one place behind United following a 4-2 humbling at the hands of Wolves.

For two teams who are used to competing at the top of the table, they find themselves in unfamiliar territory in the bottom half and looking over their shoulders.

Amorim himself even acknowledged the dreaded ‘R-word’ earlier in the campaign, and there has been an open debate around Ange Postecoglou and the job he is doing at Spurs.

However, with Southampton already condemned to a swift return to the Championship and Ipswich and Leicester effectively requiring miracles, the red half of Manchester and the Lilywhite half of north London can breathe easy for the remainder of the campaign.

Bizarrely, one of the two could still end the season with a trophy and qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, given they are still in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League ahead of second leg ties against Lyon and Eintracht Frankfurt - both matches can be seen live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Nevertheless, neither side will look back on this season in the league with too much fondness. Current projections have both with a one in four chance of finishing in their current 14th and 15th places in the league.

Premier Legaue final table prediction 14 April -

According to Opta, United’s points per game is 1.19 this season, which would give them a season total of 45, while Tottenham’s points per game is 1.16 this season, giving them a season total of 44.

Both totals would be more than enough to keep them up this season, however, Spurs’ average would have potentially taken them down back in the 1994/95 season.

That year, Crystal Palace picked up 49 points in a season where teams played 42 games rather than the current 38, and their PPG was 1.17.

Spurs would have also finished on 49 points with their current PPG, while United would have finished on 50.

Another quirk of that campaign was the fact that the league was in the process of trimming down from 22 to 20 teams, meaning Palace went down as part of a bottom four rather than three, something both United and Spurs can be thankful is not the case this year.

TeamGamesPoints (Points Per Game)Crystal Palace (1992/93)4249 (1.17)Crystal Palace (1994/95)4245 (1.07)Middlesbrough (1992/93)4244 (1.05)Norwich City (1994/95)4243 (1.02)Sheffield United (1993/94)4242 (1)Middlesbrough (1996/97)3842 (1.11)*West Ham United (2002/03)3842 (1.11)Nottingham Forest (1992/93)4240 (0.95)Oldham Athletic (1993/94)4240 (0.95)Sunderland (1996/97)3840 (1.05)Bolton Wanderers (1997/98)3840 (1.05)

*Middlesbrough finished on 39 points and were relegated after being deducted three points

The performances of the bottom three are also a factor, with Southampton (0.31ppg), Leicester (0.56), and Ipswich (0.66) not putting up much of a fight in the relegation battle so far this campaign.

United have won five of their six matches against the trio, with their only dropped points coming in Amorim's first game - a 1-1 draw at Portman Road in the winter.

Without these results, United’s PPG actually drops to 0.85 and expanded over 38 games, just 33 points (or 38 points in a 42-game season). Only Nottingham Forest, with 32 points last season, have survived with a lower total.

*Forest finished on 32 points following a four-point deduction

Spurs’ record against the bottom three has been noticeably worse, with defeats against Leicester and Ipswich among those contributing to their lowly position.

However, removing their results against these teams, Postecoglou’s side have a PPG of 1.04, taking them to 39 points over a season or - 44 in a 42-game season – which would have relegated them in nine seasons since 1992/93.

"If you look at our position in the table, it says it all," lamented Amorim after the Newcastle loss.

Neither United nor Spurs will want to find themselves in such discussions going forward, so the numbers up until this point ought to serve as a huge wake-up call for both clubs as the season draws to a close.

Tottenham Hotspur take on Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park on Thursday, with a place in the UEFA Europa League semi-final on the line.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou appears to be clinging on to his job by his fingertips, with Sunday’s 4-2 defeat to Wolves the 17th time the north Londoners have lost in the Premier League this term.

With the club 15th in the league and out of both domestic cups, the Europa League remains Tottenham's last chance of winning silverware this season, while it also offers a route into next season's UEFA Champions League.

Owen Hargreaves and Rio Ferdinand were both unimpressed with the desire of managers to defend their philosophies to the extent that it prevents them winning games by adapting. The former Manchester United team-mates discussed whether a UEFA Europa League triumph would mean more to Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, or under-fire Ange Postecoglou, with both sides struggling in the Premier League.

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes Ange Postecoglou’s philosophy is "getting in the way of winning games" at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Australian made a superb impression in north London in his debut season in the Premier League, but the campaign was wrecked by a persistent injury crisis which has not yet been fully resolved.

Postecoglou has also come under fire for not altering his approach to the game while missing key defenders, instead remaining committed to an attacking strategy.

Postecoglou 'not disrespected' by Pochettino Spurs return comments - 'Hope it happens'

Many observers have suggested he should play more conservatively, but the club remain in the bottom half of the table.

The Londoners still have one chance left to win silverware as they are in the UEFA Europa League, with their first leg in the quarter-finals of the tournament coming against Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, April 10 - live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Speaking on TNT Sports alongside Joleon Lescott, Joe Hart, Steve McManaman and his former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand, Hargreaves pointed out that even the best teams need to adapt to their opponents.

Highlights: Spurs overturn first leg deficit to seal quarter-final place

Video credit: TNT Sports

He said: "We played in a good United team, won the league. But we played Barcelona in the Champions League, remember, Rio? What did we do over those two legs?

"We said, you can have the ball, we’ll hit you on the counter."

He added: "This philosophy thing is getting in the way of winning games. We had [Carlos] Tevez, [Wayne] Rooney, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Rio Ferdinand], [Nemanja] Vidic, [Edwin] van der Sar, [Paul] Scholes, everyone.

"It’s not about winning, it’s not about, ‘we got 77% possession, and we played nice football.’"

Hargreaves concluded: "Tottenham could win the Europa League if they defended well."

Ferdinand gave short shrift to the idea of managers’ philosophies, suggesting that, for some, it was an attempt to impress without building winning sides.

He said: "It’s style over substance now. It’s about who looks the man, who’s got the clipboard out, who looks like he’s putting out a team that’s tactically superior.

"When push comes to shove, you need your players to make decisions and win you games."

Hart: 'Spurs are right at the end of their tether'

The Breakdown also discussed whether Manchester United or Spurs would benefit more from winning the tournament. Both teams have only dignity to play for in their remaining league games, but winning the Europa League would earn them a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Lescott suggested that with Ruben Amorim relatively safe at United after he came to the club already in trouble in November, it is Postecoglou and Tottenham who would be more positively affected by a Europa League triumph.

He explained: "Who would need it more? I would say Spurs. Nothing changes at United if they don’t win. Spurs, their manager is changing, potentially. At this stage, bigger things happen if [Spurs win]."

Hart concurred, saying: "I think Spurs are right at the end of their tether if they don’t produce in this competition."

McManaman believes Postecoglou put himself in a tough position when he said at the start of the campaign that he traditionally wins silverware in his second season.

"Ange saying he lifts trophies in his second season," the former Liverpool man began. "That’s like a millstone around his neck.

"The media will never let him forget that. So if it doesn’t happen, there will be wholesale changes at Tottenham. You don’t want it to happen, but that’s what will happen. You can feel it."

LONDON CALLING

A mouth-watering derby in the English capital provides Thursday's night entertainment.

After Manchester City and Newcastle United won on Wednesday to overtake them, Chelsea are looking to reclaim fourth place with victory here.

The Blues will be aiming to get back on track, having seen a four-match winning streak ended by a 1-0 defeat at Arsenal before the international break.

As for Tottenham, they are down in 14th place, and seeking to reduce their 10-point deficit to the top half of the table.

Ange Postecoglou has come under pressure recently, but a win at Stamford Bridge would certainly ease that.
