Mathys Tel was lured to Tottenham by Ange Postecoglou in February 2025, with the Australian coach prising the attacking talent from Bayern Munich as part of his vision in north London.
Postecoglou is long gone but an Australian crowd got to see the French attacking player light up Allianz Stadium with a sparkling free-kick that brought the Sydney Super Cup clash with Sydney FC to life.
The Premier League outfit had dominated the opening part of the first half before Patrick Kisnorbo’s outfit started to find their way back into the game.
But just when they thought they had, the 21-year-old stepped up on the edge of the area, centrally, and curled his dead ball effort majestically past Gus Hoefsloot, who was deputising for Harrison Devenish-Meares and couldn’t get close at full stretch.
“It was a great finish. He has probably been the best player of the pitch in the first half and deserved his goal,” Spurs legend Ledley King told Paramount at half-time.
“There have been few moments of quality, that is definitely one them. Tottenham have dominated the ball.”
It augers well for the winger, who only scored four times in 42 games for Spurs in all competitions last term.
The 29th minute goal put Roberto De Zerbi’s side 1-0 up in their second clash Down Under, following their 2-0 win over Auckland and ahead of their Saturday night showdown with Chelsea.
