For the first time since September, Leeds United picked up all three points in the Premier League.
Our 1-0 win over Tottenham yesterday ended our five-game winless run as we enter the international break.
Noah Okafor scored the only goal of the match. The Swiss winger managed to find the breakthrough after being subbed on with just under 15 minutes to go.
However, one of the biggest talking points from the game was regarding Jayden Bogle and the tackle he made in the first half. Now a Match of the Day pundit has had their say on the incident.
Steph Houghton doesn’t believe Jayden Bogle’s challenge warranted a red card
During the first half of the clash at Elland Road, Bogle accidentally stepped on the Achilles of Spurs winger Mathys Tel.
The foul was reviewed by VAR for a possible red card for a number of minutes, but in the end, Bogle was not sent off.
Tel tried to continue, but in the end, he was forced to hobble off as he was replaced by Dominic Solanke in the 43rd minute.
Jamie O’Hara certainly didn’t mince his words when reacting to the incident on talkSPORT. The former Spurs midfielder felt it was a clear red card for Bogle.
However, when analysing the incident on Match of the Day, Steph Houghton had a different viewpoint.
“I understand why Spurs fans feel aggrieved because of incidents that have happened over the last few weeks where there have been red cards. But I do feel as though this is really different.
“Jayden Bogle, with his left foot, I think that’s his planting leg to try and change direction. I think Tel takes a very good touch, and I think his intention is to tackle with his right leg.
“He doesn’t get any card for this, but for me, I think it’s a yellow card. I don’t think it’s serious foul play. I don’t think it’s aggressive.
“This could’ve had a massive impact on the game. Especially with Tel going off injured because he was such a key player for Spurs in that first half.”
Obviously, we all know VAR cannot retrospectively give a yellow card to a player, so Bogle ultimately escaped punishment for the incident.
We have to admit Jayden Bogle was lucky to stay on
Whilst I agree with Houghton’s assessment and don’t feel Bogle should’ve been sent off, the Englishman was lucky to remain on the pitch.
My heart was in my mouth for the entire time VAR were reviewing the tackle. The more they watched it, the more convinced I was that Bogle was going for an early shower.
Going down to ten men so early would’ve effectively killed our chances of winning the game, as we would’ve sat back and hoped to rescue a point.
But thankfully the decision went our way.
To beat that inform Tottenham side yesterday is arguably our most impressive win of the season.
So whilst there has been criticism of us drawing too many games, yesterday we won a game at Elland Road that many didn’t expect us to, and I don’t think that’ll be the last time we say that this season.
