Tottenham Hotspur have only been able to take 404 supporters to the Aspmyra Stadion on Thursday night to will the London outfit on to second leg victory against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League semi-final.
Ange Postecoglou’s men go into the clash as strong favourites, having already secured a 3-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week. Hold onto that lead and Spurs will book themselves a place in the Europa League final later this month.
Either Manchester United or Athletic Bilbao await the winners of the semi-final in Norway tonight as Postecoglou looks to salvage a hugely underwhelming Premier League campaign by getting his hands on a piece of major silverware. Despite the lead gained last week, the club are taking the trip to Norway seriously too.
Tottenham Hotspur plan surprise for away supporters
The Aspmyra Stadion has a capacity of just 8,270 and only 404 tickets from those seats have been allocated to Tottenham Hotspur. The club are clearly keen to make it a night to remember for those who have made the trip to the Arctic Circle.
Images circulating on social media platform X at Thursday lunchtime showed that staff from the club had been putting Spurs scarves on every seat in the away end. Despite its position geographically, it is predicted to be a comfortable seven degrees Celsius tonight with rainy spells.
Fans online praised Tottenham Hotspur for the act of generosity. One Spurs supporter wrote: “Engagement has been top-notch as of late with this Europa League knockout run. Gotta give credit where it's due, the club clearly shares fan sentiments about this and have been listening to us.”
Another added: “The club proving that it doesn’t take much to make fans happy. Feels like we’re being treated as fans rather then customers over the past few weeks.”
Tottenham Hotspur have faced criticism this season for a lack of ambition with the club prioritising the business side of life rather than performance on the pitch. Speaking on Sky Sports in February, pundit Jamie Redknapp said: "As long as they've got the American Football and they've got Beyonce in the summer, they're happy, the owners are happy. It looks like a business model that everyone can be happy with that can be successful.
"But does that breed a winning environment? No it does not because something is fundamentally wrong. They have tried to do both, but it has not worked and it has not worked the way Daniel Levy wants it to."
Ange Postecoglou praises Spurs resilience to criticism
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou spoke about the need for resilience this season in the face of criticism on Wednesday night as he previewed the Europa League semi-final second leg. He told the media: "Resilience is a very important commodity. Anyone who has success, in whatever field it is, has had to show resilience at some point. This notion that success is linear and it comes really easy, anyone who has had success in whatever field will know at some point they’ve had to deal with a lot of adversity.
“We’ve had to deal with a lot of adversity this year. Through that adversity they’ve never splintered or wavered belief in what we’re trying to do. We wouldn’t be sitting in this position if that wasn’t the case. It’s a testament to them. It helps in games like tomorrow because you’re going to have to deal with another challenge. If they can tap into the way they’ve dealt with every sort of stumble we’ve had this year, then they’ll find the strength they need to get the job done."
