Tottenham Hotspur won their opening two matches of the Premier League season. A 3-0 victory over Burnley followed by an unexpected 2-0 triumph at the Etihad Stadium had supporters feeling positive about the season ahead under Thomas Frank.
Since those two games, Spurs have collected twenty-three points in the space of twenty-five matches. That is relegation form and the London club are bloody lucky that Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley have been utterly tosh for the majority of the campaigns (especially the former).
Nevertheless, Sunday’s humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of rivals Arsenal means that they sit just four points ahead of eighteenth-placed West Ham United. The bookies certainly think that Igor Tudor’s side are relegation contenders and the Croatian has questioned the mindset of his players following a game where the Gunners were in full control only days after drawing 2-2 with bottom club Wolves.
Could Spurs Go Down at Stamford Bridge?
Tottenham supporters are currently scanning through the fixture list wondering where their next Premier League win is coming from. The last top-flight victory was at Crystal Palace on 28 December. Since then, it has been nine games without a victory. In those matches, four points have been collected and the real bright note was the Dominic Solanke-inspired comeback to get a 2-2 draw against Manchester City.
However, it’s now the case that a win is badly needed. Spurs have two London derbies on the horizon. The first of these is Sunday’s trip to Craven Cottage where they are the outsiders to beat Fulham. Then comes a home game against Crystal Palace before a trip to Anfield on Sunday 15 March.
If Tottenham are to go down this season, it will be in one of the later games that their fate is sealed. Perhaps it will go down to the final match where they host Everton. Although this is a winnable game on paper, the north London outfit have only won twice in front of their own supporters and just once since beating Burnley in August.
The game beforehand is Chelsea away, with the Stamford Bridge supporters hoping that they can play a part in helping rivals suffer relegation. Interestingly, there are also trips to Wolves (25 April) and Aston Villa (2 May) as part of the final five matches and it might be that Tottenham are still scrapping for points at this late juncture.
