A new report has now shed light on why Daniel Levy decided against putting his name on the announcement of Ange Postecoglou’s sacking, and why the Tottenham chairman remained silent about the matter until this week.

The debate on whether Tottenham Hotspur were right to pull the plug on the Australian’s project continues to rage on, with some Spurs fans feeling that Postecoglou deserved the chance to build on his Europa League success.

However, Levy ultimately decided to sack the 59-year-old after the Lilywhites endured their worst-ever Premier League campaign, finishing just one spot away from the relegation zone with 22 defeats.

Alasdair Gold had revealed last week that some at Tottenham were surprised that Levy did not put his name on the announcement about Postecoglou’s sacking.

Why Daniel Levy remained silent on Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham departure

The Times have now pointed out that the Spurs chairman was very much part of the meeting, after which they curated the Postecoglou announcement, and he personally approved the final draft of the announcement.

The outlet says that the idea of not putting his name to the decision was intended to take the emotion out of the announcement.

The report reveals that one Tottenham spokesperson said the decision to sack the Australian was made as a collective by the club’s football management group rather than by the 63-year-old.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The spokesperson argued that it would thus not be appropriate for Levy to comment on the decision to sack Tottenham’s first trophy-winning manager in 17 years.

However, Levy finally broke his silence on Postecoglou’s Tottenham exit this week in an interview with new CEO Vinai Venkatesham.

He said: “I am very grateful to Ange. I do not regret appointing Ange. In his first season, we finished fifth. In his second season, we were over the moon to win a trophy. But we need to compete in all competitions, and we felt that we needed a change.

“I have got an excellent relationship with him. I told him you are always going to be a part of our history; he and his family are always welcome back. It was a collective decision; it was not my decision, we do everything together.

“Emotionally, it was very difficult, but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.”

Levy did not decide to hire Ange Postecoglou

Interestingly, it has been revealed over recent weeks that the decision to appoint Postecoglou was made by Scott Munn rather than Levy.

According to reports, Munn is expected to step down from his role as Tottenham’s chief football officer after Vinai Venkatesham took over as the new Spurs CEO.

However, the Tottenham supporters will feel that the buck stops with Levy regarding the managerial decisions, as he is the one who brought Munn into the club.
