Arsenal centre-back Gabriel is a doubt for Sunday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur after suffering an injury whilst on international duty.

The Gunners have had a lot of injury problems so far this season, with the likes of Kai Havertz, Martin Odegaard, and Noni Madueke all missing significant time. It is understood that they should all be making returns very soon, however, Arsenal have more problems.

Firstly, Riccardo Calafiori was seen to be injured whilst he was on international duty with Italy, however, it has been confirmed that he will be available for Mikel Arteta against Tottenham on Sunday. The news isn’t as good for Gabriel though.

The Arsenal centre-back suffered a thigh injury during Brazil’s 2-0 friendly win against Senegal at the Emirates on Saturday. He won’t travel for Brazil’s second game against Tunisia, and is now being assessed by Arsenal’s medical staff ahead of the Spurs game.

Ancelotti apologises to Arsenal for Gabriel injury

Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has apologised following Gabriel’s injury, as it has plunged the chance for him to play on Sunday in doubt, which would be a huge blow for Arteta and Arsenal.

Ancelotti was quoted by BBC Sport, he said: “We are really sorry for this, really disappointed. When a player has an injury, you hope they can recover well and soon.”

Mikel Arteta is yet to provide an update on the defender ahead of the North London derby, but if he is to miss that game on Sunday, the Arsenal boss will either play Calafiori as a centre-back, and Lewis-Skelly on the left, or replace Gabriel with one of Cristhian Mosquera or Piero Hincapie.

Either way, if Gabriel is to miss some time, Arsenal will have to play the likes of Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, potentially without their star defender, and arguably their best player of the season so far.
