Sandro Tonali’s future has already become one of Newcastle United’s defining summer sagas, and all thanks to Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of the Italy international ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Spurs are pushing hard to complete a transfer, but Newcastle is holding out for a fee closer to £100million, quite distant from the reported fees offered by Tottenham up to now.

According to Chronicle Live’s Lee Ryder, there’s a plot twist coming and it involves Manchester City, who have now joined the battle to sign Tonali.

“Manchester City have joined the battle to sign Sandro Tonali with Enzo Maresca eager to hit the ground running as new boss,” Ryder reported.

Ryder added that sources close to Tonali and his agent have described City as “genuine candidates” to lure him from St James’ Park.

Tottenham have already had an £80million bid rejected by Newcastle, but Spurs still believe they are in a strong position to land the midfielder.

According to Ryder, confirming The Mirror’s report, Tonali has reportedly agreed a wage structure in principle with Tottenham worth £275,000 per week across a six-year deal for a total £86-million deal going his way.

Chronicle Live is reporting that Tonali’s agency, GR Sports, would also receive 10 percent of the transfer fee, a package City could match.

Man City’s case for entering a bidding war for Tonali is linked to finding a replacement for Bernardo Silva, as well as adding cover for the potential sale of Rodri, with Tonali also being admired by the Cityzens during Pep Guardiola’s time at the club.

However, City have already spent £116 million on former Magpie midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, which might make it hard for them to pony up as much money as Newcastle are asking for Tonali.

Arsenal, meanwhile, were reportedly offered Tonali at some point but were put off by the wages and agent fees, instead focusing on Bruno Guimaraes, who could depart for the capital in the next few days or weeks.

According to The Mirror, Tottenham have offered Tonali a six-year, £86 million contract in order to let the Italy international know what’s waiting for him in London after making him Roberto De Zerbi’s top midfield target.

The contract is understood to be worth £275,000 per week and was agreed with the player after talks with his agency, GR Sports.

Spurs still need to agree a fee with Newcastle, having already seen an £80 million bid rejected earlier this month, but it’s obvious Tonali himself won’t let this opportunity go and could force Newcastle’s hand into forcing his way out, perhaps even requesting the transfer out of Tyneside.

Newcastle are keen to keep Tonali, but the report noted that a major sale would give Eddie Howe and sporting director Ross Wilson more flexibility in the market.

And at the end of the day, the Magpies would be fools if they don’t cash in this big after they paid “only” £55 million to sign Tonali from AC Milan in 2023.

A deal at that level would nearly double Newcastle’s investment and smash Tottenham’s transfer record, and added to the probable sale of Bruno for another £80 million to Arsenal, as well as the already-completed sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, the Magpies could be looking at £250+ million to play with during the summer.

TEAMtalk reported that Tottenham believe a bid in that region could be enough to reach an agreement, with Newcastle having consistently valued Tonali at that price.

The report also claimed Spurs have prepared a lucrative contract package worth more than double Tonali’s current Newcastle salary.

“The north London club have also put together a hugely lucrative contract package, worth more than double Tonali’s current salary at St James’ Park, in the belief they can persuade the 26-year-old to become the centre-piece of De Zerbi’s new-look midfield,” Bailey wrote.

The request was swiftly turned down, as Newcastle somehow see such a huge fee not high enough to sell Tonali and profit from the sale of a player they initially bought for £55 million.

“Newcastle have rebuffed a second approach from Tottenham for Sandro Tonali,” the Daily Mail reported. “The North London club did not improve their original offer of £75million but asked the Magpies to reconsider.”

Football.London also reported that Tottenham returned with the same proposal, while Newcastle value Tonali closer to £100million and have not yet received an offer they consider acceptable, as ludicrous as that sounds.

Spurs gaffer Roberto De Zerbi has identified Tonali as his top midfield target, and the player is reportedly open to exploring his options after three seasons at St James’ Park. He seems nothing but locked into moving elsewhere, if not now, in a year or two, so the Magpies would do good capitalizing at the peak of his value rather than waiting for a what-if that might never become a reality.

Manchester City and Arsenal are also monitoring the situation, while Manchester United’s long-term interest is said to have cooled.

“Tottenham’s initial £75m bid for Tonali was turned down over the weekend by Newcastle but Roberto De Zerbi’s club are expected to return with a larger offer,” Jones reported.

Jones states that Tonali is open to joining De Zerbi at Tottenham, although Arsenal would be his preference if they turn their interest into a formal offer. Manchester City, meanwhile, are also watching how the negotiations develop while pursuing Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Jones reported that Newcastle could be easing their stance on the sale as it might allow them to rekindle their long-standing interest in AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit, who is valued at more than £60million, facilitating such a humongous offer to be submitted thanks to the money raised from Tonali’s sale.

“Eddie Howe’s recruitment staff have been working through a number of options to strengthen their midfield and AZ Alkmaar’s Smit is one they admire greatly,” Jones reported.

Smit, 20, won the Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament at last summer’s European Under-19 Championship and has since continued to attract interest from top European clubs.

Newcastle’s main appeal to Smit is none other—because there is literally none other—giving him some Premier League football minutes from the get-go, after he missed out on the Netherlands World Cup squad and might find himself relegated to the bench if he chooses a higher-profile club as his next destination.

The report states that Roberto De Zerbi is driving Tottenham’s interest in the Italy international, who has emerged as one of Spurs’ leading transfer targets ahead of next season.

Not only that, but a transfer to the Spurs is highly likely, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

“Tottenham Hotspur are in positive talks with the camp of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali over a potential summer move,” Ornstein reported. “There has been no contact so far with Newcastle but, if an agreement looks possible with the player, club-to-club contact can be expected to follow. The transfer fee is considered a bigger challenge for Spurs than a deal with Tonali.”

A good number of Premier League clubs are obviously interested in the 26-year-old, including the Spurs, Arsenal and Manchester City, but talkSPORT reported that Tonali’s current preference is to return to his former club, AC Milan, and leave England entirely.

Even then, Ornstein revealed the Spurs’ plans, and they seem to have a pretty good idea of what they want for the club and Tonali.

“Tottenham are prepared to push hard for a statement signing, which is being driven by head coach Roberto De Zerbi and is backed by the ownership,” Ornstein said.

Tonali spent three years at Milan before joining Newcastle in a £52million deal in 2023. He helped the Italian club win the Serie A title during the 2021-22 season and was a legend there before packing his bags on his way to Tyneside.

The Italy midfielder made 53 appearances for Newcastle last season, scoring three goals and adding seven assists. Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League and missed out on European qualification.

Tonali’s contract situation, however, gives Newcastle leverage. His deal has two years remaining, which means the Magpies will be on their right to demand a humongous fee if any suitor turns interest into real bids and subsequent negotiations.

Tottenham Hotspur are considering a summer move for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, according to The Sun, which reported that Newcastle United remains interested and leading the race for the disgruntled goalie.

Trafford, 23, returned to Manchester City from Burnley last summer in a £27million deal. He was expected to compete for the No.1 role, but he was displaced after City signed Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The England international has not made a Premier League appearance since August, although he featured in the Carabao Cup final victory over Arsenal and made his senior England debut against Uruguay just before that game.

According to The Sun, Spurs view Trafford as a potential successor to Guglielmo Vicario, who has been linked with a summer exit. Italy legend Walter Zenga has urged Inter Milan to sign Vicario.

We know very well that Newcastle are also monitoring Trafford’s situation. Eddie Howe’s side attempted to sign him last summer before Manchester City stole him. Newcastle instead secured Aaron Ramsdale on a season-long loan from Southampton.

Although Newcastle hold an option to buy Ramsdale, they will return him to his club this summer. Nick Pope, meanwhile, will enter the final year of his contract this summer, which could prompt the club to revisit their goalkeeping plans.

Trafford’s situation is expected to draw significant attention as the transfer window approaches, with multiple Premier League clubs assessing their goalkeeping options, but the potential move of the goalie depending entrirely on his decision.

Newcastle United are expected to target a striker in the summer transfer window amid the steady underperformance of their current forward options.

Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa have struggled for consistency in front of goal after arriving in Tyneside for humongous amounts of money last summer, and speculation is already surrounding them and the forward corps of the Magpies ahead of July’s transfer market.

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, for one, believes Tottenham Hotspur forward Dominic Solanke should be a priority target for Eddie Howe’s club.

“Newcastle United should be moving quickly in the summer transfer window to sign Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke,” Wyness told Football Insider.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, Wyness outlined why he views the 28-year-old as a strong fit.

“Yes, I think he would. I think Eddie Howe would get the best out of him as he’s done before. I think he’s perfect for Newcastle,” Wyness said. “I think with the Woltemade situation, he seems to very unhappy right now. And I would say that Solanke would be a big upgrade compared to Woltemade. And I think working with Eddie Howe would be very good.”

Wyness also suggested that talks may already be happening and progressing toward the completion of a deal once the season is over.

“So I’d say from Newcastle’s point of view, definitely a thumbs up for Solanke,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some deals happening behind the scenes right now.”

Solanke previously played for Howe at Bournemouth and has established himself as a Premier League scorer. That said, he’s still part of a side that is bound to be relegated, or come close to that fate, which begs questions about whether or not investing in him would be a wise move by NUFC.

For now, no formal bid from Newcastle has been reported, and it’s fair to assume the Magpies recruiting and scouting of potential transfer targets is still in the early stages, with a few months and a World Cup still to come before clubs can get down to business.

Newcastle are reviewing their striker corps because, well, what to tell you about it that you don’t already know. One-hit wonder Will Osula is seemingly attracting attention from Crystal Palace and Aston Villa and was an eyelid away from leaving for Germany last summer.

Add the ever-underperforming Yoanne Wissa and Nick Woltemade to the equation, and you have everything for chasing not one, not two, not three strikers next summer.

Jones noted Solanke’s importance to the Spurs, but the realities they are facing.

“Solanke, now 28, is key to Spurs’ plans as they would want to keep him even if they went down,” Jones wrote. “However, despite struggling with injury this season, he is still a proven Premier League performer and will be in demand.”

The England forward has made 14 appearances this season, scoring five goals, all since January, in a side battling near the bottom of the table.

Tottenham’s position remains precarious following a defeat to Crystal Palace that left them one point above 18th place in their last game. Speaking after that result, Solanke addressed the team’s situation.

“We’ve just had a big conversation,” Solanke said. “We know the position we are in is definitely not where we want to be so we need to figure out how we are going to get out of it as soon as possible.

“We know there’s been difficulties but we’re not in a position to make any excuses anymore. We need to do the job on the pitch and I think it is easy to say that we want to be better, but we need to make sure we are better on the pitch.”

Whether Newcastle formalize their interest in the player and submit an offer may depend on their own departures, but mostly on Tottenham’s going down the Pyramid ranks into the Championship at the end of the season.
