Newcastle United’s search for a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes continues to gather pace, and one of the club’s most intriguing midfield options is a player the Magpies have admired long before this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall remains firmly in Newcastle’s thinking despite Eddie Howe’s departure, with the Magpies still evaluating whether to make the Sweden international one of their priority targets under new head coach Matthias Jaissle.

Speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, Romano revealed that Bergvall is among the players Newcastle are actively discussing internally.

“Now the conversation is ongoing with the coach Matthias Jaissle,” Romano said. “One of the players they appreciated, for example, is Lucas Bergvall. They were looking at him because he might leave Tottenham in the summer transfer window. He’s a player who was already approved by Eddie Howe.”

Romano added that Newcastle’s recruitment meetings over the coming days will determine exactly which midfielder becomes their priority.

”Let’s see now with the new coach, Matthias Jaissle,” Romano said.“ Over the next two to three days, they will have more meetings and decide which kind of player they want to add to their squad.

“Bergvall could be an option, not the only one, but I’m sure Newcastle will do something in that position because obviously they lost Bruno and they need a top midfielder, so they are working on that for sure.”

Romano’s update comes after previous reports suggested Bergvall wants to leave Tottenham in search of regular first-team football, with Nott Forest also interested in the midfielder. Newcastle has already seen an opening bid rejected, while Football Insider claimed the Magpies are delaying any renewed move for Bergvall until UEFA’s 45-day accounting window following Sandro Tonali’s move to Spurs expires mid-August.

Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi has also acknowledged Bergvall’s situation publicly.

“I would like that he stays with us. I think he’s potentially a top, top, top player,” De Zerbi said. “But then I don’t want to convince anyone to stay.”

With Newcastle also linked to Felix Nmecha, Angelo Stiller, Victor Froholdt and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Romano’s comments suggest Bergvall remains firmly in the conversation as the club decides how to reshape its midfield following Bruno Guimaraes’ impending departure.

Newcastle United’s pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall may have received an unexpected boost despite the Spurs’ rejection of the Magpies’ first offer for the midfielder.

It’s obvious the Magpies remain in the market for another central midfielder following Sandro Tonali’s departure, and Bergvall seems to be positioned as Newcastle’s new No. 1 target to strengthen the midfield.

According to the Mirror’s Fasika Zelealem, Tottenham is waiting for a bidding war to emerge before rushing the sanctioning of Bergvall’s sale.

“Tottenham would welcome a bidding war with Nottingham Forest for the midfielder, with Newcastle determined to hold firm on their valuation of the player,” Zelealem wrote.

While Spurs rejected the first approaches for their player, the latest comments from manager Roberto De Zerbi have cast further doubt over the Sweden international’s future in London and handed Newcastle a boost in their pursuit of Bergvall.

“Who doesn’t want to stay in Tottenham, who is not happy, is not proud to stay here, has to leave,” De Zerbi said. “I want proud players who are happy to stay here and to go on the pitch at Tottenham (Hotspur) Stadium with a big motivation.”

The Athletic’s Elias Burke also reported that Bergvall has informed Tottenham of his preference to leave this summer, with De Zerbi confirming talks with the midfielder are imminent.

“I have not spoken with Lucas yet, I will in the next days,” De Zerbi said. “Without problems, Lucas is a big, big talent. If he wants to stay, I will be happy. Otherwise, we have to find a new solution with Johan Lange, with Vinai. It’s not my business after the decision to leave.”

Those remarks could easily strengthen Newcastle’s hopes and give the Magpies some leverage in the negotiations with Tottenham, although the Magpies are expected to face competition from Nottingham Forest and would still need to bridge at least some of the gap between Tottenham’s valuation and their own if they decide to revive their interest.

Newcastle United may no longer be leading the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall despite maintaining strong interest in the Sweden international and having seen their first bid rejected by the Spurs.

The Magpies have been linked with the 20-year-old throughout the summer, with the first formal offer reported just a few days ago. Now, however, a new report suggests another Premier League club has moved into pole position to land Bergvall.

According to Football Insider’s Keith Wyness and Evan Shaw, Nottingham Forest is now the favourite to land the Spurs midfielder after both Forest and Newcastle reportedly saw offers worth more than €47 million (£40 million) rejected by Tottenham.

The report says Spurs are holding out for at least €59 million (£50 million), a figure both clubs are expected to be capable of meeting following the sales of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, formerly of Newcastle, and Elliot Anderson of Nott Forest.

However, Wyness believes the decision could ultimately come down to the player, who he believes prefers to move to the City Ground instead of St. James’ Park.

“I actually see Forest coming out on top on this one,” Wyness said on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast. “I think the manager at Forest will be the factor that will convince him to go there.

”Both clubs have got war chests in terms of the sales that they’ve done. Both clubs need to improve in those positions. But I’ve just got a feeling that Forest are going to be the ones that come out on top.

“I don’t think there’ll be any difference between the two of them. It’ll be up to the player to decide. And from what I’m hearing, I think he’s going to choose Forest.”

The report adds that Forest views Bergvall as the ideal, one-for-one replacement for Elliot Anderson, while Oliver Glasner’s arrival as manager is believed to have strengthened the club’s position in the race.

Newcastle should remain firmly in contention, but it looks like we’re back to facing the possibility of dealing with another blow for one of the club’s top targets.

According to TEAMtalk’s Rob McCarthy, Newcastle is plotting a double move for Bergvall and England full-back Djed Spence, with the combined cost of the two deals potentially reaching €106 million (£90 million).

The report says Newcastle remains determined to land Bergvall after Spurs rejected an initial €54 million (£46 million) offer, while Tottenham continues to value the 20-year-old closer to €59 million (£50 million).

McCarthy wrote that Newcastle hopes to beat Nottingham Forest to Bergvall’s signature despite growing competition, while also targeting Spence after the departures of Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett.

The report adds that Spurs are now seeking closer to €47 million (£40 million) for Spence following his impressive World Cup performances, up from the €29 million (£25 million) valuation reported before the tournament.

McCarthy also says Bergvall is pushing for an exit after Tottenham strengthened its midfield with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

“While the writing appears to be on the wall for the talented Bergvall, Spurs remain reluctant to part ways unless they recoup a figure nearer to that £50m price point,” McCarthy wrote.

If Newcastle ultimately agrees to Tottenham’s valuations, the report suggests Howe could spend close to €106 million (£90 million) to land both players as the club looks to reshape its squad following Tonali’s departure and ongoing uncertainty surrounding captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle United is obviously and necessarily prioritizing the addition of a starting midfielder before the transfer window closes, yet a new report suggests the club has already established a firm limit on how far it is willing to go for one of its top targets.

According to The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson, following Tottenham’s rejection of Newcastle’s initial offer worth around €53 million (£46 million), Newcastle has stepped back rather than immediately increase its proposal.

Wilson added something new to the initial transfer report, revealing that Newcastle never submitted a formal bid, with the leaked figure instead being discussed exclusively during talks between the two clubs for the transfer of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham earlier this month.

While Newcastle could still return with another offer, The Northern Echo says there is currently “no appetite” at St. James’ Park to raise the price and become involved in an auction for the Sweden international.

The report adds Newcastle officials believe Tottenham is attempting to generate wider interest in Bergvall by publicly sharing those figures, mostly because of Nottingham Forest’s interest and past discussions over the midfielder.

After missing out on new Aston Villa star Johan Manzambi, Newcastle’s urgency to strengthen in midfield cannot be higher, but Wilson reports the Magpies’ recruitment team is considering multiple alternatives to both Manzambi and Bergvall, in case both end up signing elsewhere.

According to The Northern Echo, preliminary talks have already taken place with at least two other, unnamed, midfield targets, with Newcastle hopeful of making significant progress on a new signing within the next few days.

However, a fresh report suggests the Magpies have no intention of walking away from their new No. 1 target, with Newcastle preparing to return with a second offer for Bergvall after Tottenham Hotspur rejected the club’s opening bid for the highly rated midfielder.

According to Italian journalist Fabio Gatto, Newcastle is expected to make another attempt to sign Bergvall within the next 24 to 72 hours after seeing its initial offer turned down by Tottenham.

Rather than significantly increasing the transfer fee, Gatto claims Newcastle is working on improving the structure of the deal in an effort to reach an agreement with Spurs.

The update follows widespread reports that Tottenham rejected Newcastle’s opening bid of around €54 million (£46 million), although the North London club is reportedly willing to consider a sale if its valuation of roughly €58 million (£50 million) is met.

It’s also known that Bergvall’s desire is to have more regular playing time, which will be complicated in London after the arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and former Newcastle midfielder Tonali, suggesting that he could pursue a move and encourage the Magpies as negotiations continue.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, making 45 appearances for Tottenham before an ankle injury cut short his season, while also earning the club’s Player of the Season award.

Newcastle views Bergvall as an ideal long-term addition who fits the club’s recruitment strategy of targeting young players, but he would already arrive with top-level experience in a massive plus.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle submitted an offer worth around €54 million (£46 million) for the Sweden international, but Spurs immediately turned it down.

The report adds that the bid was higher than Nottingham Forest’s previous offers to sign Bergvall, although Tottenham has rejected every approach received for the 20-year-old so far.

While Spurs continue to resist any sale of their midfielder, The Athletic reported Tottenham could reconsider if an offer reaches a figure the club views as acceptable.

Adding to the saga is the fact that Bergvall, while under contract until 2031, has already informed the Spurs that he wants to leave this summer in search of more regular playing time. The Athletic first reported the midfielder’s desire to move in June, and interest has continued to grow from clubs in both England and across Europe.

Newcastle’s pursuit comes after missing out on former No. 1 transfer target Johan Manzambi, who ultimately joined Aston Villa, while the club is also working to reshape its midfield following Tonali’s move to, of all teams, Tottenham.

Although Newcastle has now seen its opening offer rejected, The Athletic reports that Tottenham’s position is not inflexible and will likely change given the player’s preference for an exit.

Back when Newcastle United placed a nine-figure price tag on Sandro Tonali’s head, nobody in his sane mind believed there would be a club willing to pony up that amount to extract him from Tyneside.

On Wednesday, after a week or so of rumors and negotiations, Tottenham Hotspur finally got face-painted.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein was the first to report that the Spurs have reached an agreement to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle in a deal that could rise to £100million, exactly the amount the Magpies were demanding from the get-go.

The deal is “only” worth an initial £92.5million, with another £7.5million in add-ons tied to multiple Champions League qualifications, which might or might not happen after Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League last season.

Once it’s made official, the move would become a new club-record transfer for Tottenham, who have already agreed a deal worth up to £85 million for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes.

Meanwhile, it will mark one of Newcastle’s biggest sales for profit. Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 for around £60.5 million and became a key part of Howe’s midfield after returning from his 10-month gambling suspension, and now they are getting nearly £40 million more than they spent for a couple of seasons of Tonali.

The 26-year-old made 53 appearances last season, scoring three times as Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League and reached the Champions League last 16.

Although this is an obvious win for Newcastle, all things considered, it is also obvious that the optics are poor for Newcastle after the club got rid of a trio comprised of Tonali, Anthony Gordon, and Alexander Isak in a span of 10 months, with Bruno likely gone to make it four stars leaving the club in 12 months.

What will be inexcusable now for the Magpies is bringing him some very strong incoming transfers. Newcastle could have a fresh £250 million available for purchases once the Bruno sale is completed, and even if that doesn’t happen, they’d be sitting on a solid £170-1£80 millon.

Let’s announce some arrivals quickly to change the mood, and if not, PIF will get monstruosly exposed.

Sandro Tonali’s future is moving closer to London than Tyneside come September.

Judging by the latest reports, Tonali’s days in Newcastle are more than numbered as negotiations between the Magpies and Tottenham Hotspur have reached a decisive stage.

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Spurs are preparing a £100 million offer to sign Tonali, and the transfer, if all goes according to plan, should happen shortly.

The report states that personal terms have already been agreed between Spurs and the Italy international, with the only pending issue being NUFC finally accepting Tottenham’s bid, which shouldn’t be a problem as it’s now matched the Magpies’ initial valuation of Tonali.

”Tottenham are finalizing the Sandro Tonali deal with Newcastle, breaking the £100 million mark for the player,” Pedulla reported. “The agreement with Tonali and his entourage was reached some time ago, a step up from the £8 million plus a couple of bonuses agreed last October when he renewed his contract with”.

Tonali would reportedly earn between £12-13 million per season in London when the move is completed, making him one of the highest earners and thus a key player in Roberto De Zerbi’s rebuild at Tottenham.

Spurs have pursued Tonali throughout the window and previously saw an £80 million bid rejected by Newcastle, who kept holding out for a fee closer to £100 million.

A deal at the three-figure price will represent a huge profit for Newcastle, who signed Tonali from AC Milan for nearly half the price at £55 million in 2023.

Now, mind you, Newcastle could keep capitalizing on their assets by moving on from Bruno too after dealing Gordon and Tonali away.

Reports in the last 24 hours have suggested Manchester City may join the race for Bruno, even after agreeing a £116million deal for former Newcastle academy graduate Elliot Anderson, and Arsenal seem to be in a position to bid something around £80 million for the Brazil international.

Put those three and their fees together, and all of a sudden Newcastle has £250 million to play with this summer, assuming UEFA allows them.

Newcastle United’s midfield situation remains under heavy stress, with both Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes both linked with moves away from St James’ Park and on their way to Tottenham and Arsenal, respectively.

According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, however, Tonali is not favoring a move to Tottenham Hotspur despite Roberto De Zerbi’s side pushing hardest so far, instead preferring to wait for either Man City or Arsenal to bid for his services.

“I also don’t think Tonali really wants to go to Spurs,” Edwards wrote. “I’m told he would prefer Manchester City or Arsenal.”

Tottenham have already had an offer worth around £80million rejected by Newcastle, who are understood to value the Italy international closer to £100million, even though selling him at the aforementioned price would yield Newcastle a substantial profit given the price they initially paid for him.

Spurs emerged out of nowhere to make Tonali one of their top summer transfer targets, but Edwards’ report suggests the Gunners and the Cityzens would (obviously) be more appealing to Tonali and his agent to sign a new contract elsewhere.

Arsenal have also been linked with Bruno, with reports claiming the Premier League champions have spoken with the Newcastle captain’s camp and already submitted an offer to the Magpies.

That said, Edwards seemed to be cool with the rumors, writing that he is “pretty relaxed” about Bruno’s situation, revealing that the Brazilian wants a new contract at Newcastle and has done “for a while.” We’ll see how that goes.
