Crystal Palace seal club record transfer of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur

Crystal Palace seal club record transfer of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur - NBC Sports
Description

Brennan Johnson is moving across London after Crystal Palace agreed a club record deal to sign the Welshman from Tottenham Hotspur.

Johnson, 24, scored the decisive goal in Spurs’ 1-0 triumph over Manchester United in last season’s Europa League and now joins a Palace side vying for the Conference League.

Previous reports have cited the fee as near to $48 million, topping previous deals for Christian Benteke and Eddie Nketiah.

MORE — Complete list of January ins and outs

The winger has seen his minutes drop this season at Spurs under new boss Thomas Frank. Johnson’s played just 907 minutes across 21 matches in all competitions. He has four goals, a bit of a surprise given he bagged 18 goals and seven assists last season including the lone goal in the UEL final triumph over Manchester United.

“I’m really delighted that Brennan has joined the club,” said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. “He arrives very early in the window, so credit to the club for making this happen so quickly. Brennan will give us options in our attacking play with his pace and goalscoring ability and with all the upcoming games he will be a valuable addition to the squad.”

The early addition is key, as Palace do not have Ismaila Sarr due to the Africa Cup of Nations and are also without attack-minded players Eddie Nketiah and Daichi Kamada after selling Eberechi Eze in the summer.

Johnson could pay immediate dividends as Palace prepare to play Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Sunday. Glasner’s been operating with Yeremy Pino and Justin Devenny underneath Jean-Philippe Mateta, with Christantus Uche and Romain Esse coming off the bench.

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Spurs boss say after returning to Brentford?

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Spurs boss say after returning to Brentford? - NBC Sports
Description

Thomas Frank returned to Brentford for the first time since becoming Tottenham Hotspur manager in the summer, and everyone agreed they would mark the occasion with a ceremonial exhibition — a 0-0 draw so thoroughly unsatisfying for both sides.

BRENTFORD 0-0 SPURS — Video highlights & recap

Below is the latest Thomas Frank reaction, speaking after returning to west London.

Thomas Frank, on the Spurs fans booing after 0-0 draw with Brentford

“Yeah, I think they seemed like they were not too satisfied and it’s fair when we don’t hit that top performance overall. But, I think it’s double-sided because I think what we need to understand is the acknowledgement of the defensive side of the game — which we’ve done excellent today — against a team that just scored three against Liverpool, three against Man United, so on and so on. But, of course, the offensive part needs to be better. There’s no two ways about that.”

How did you see that game? “Two ways. I thought it was a tight, even game where we know how good Brentford have been here at home. We spoke about it before — how many good teams they’ve beaten and how many goals they’ve scored. We defended excellently, fantastic clean-sheet mentality — gave them nothing, gave nothing away — so that was the big positive thing. The negative is that we want to play better, we want to create more. The amount of unforced errors today was too big, in terms of really creating good opportunities. That’s the next level, but it was another clean sheet on the road, which is a good thing.”

On the penalty decision that went against Spurs: “I think it was 50-50. If it was given on the pitch, it would not be overturned.”

On the reception he received upon returning to Brentford: “That was, of course, a very nice moment — definitely going both ways from me to the club and the fans, and for them to me. When you are here seven years as a head coach it’s a big thing, and when you achieve a lot of magical moments together. A nice moment before the game, and then it was business as usual.”

How active will Spurs be in the January transfer window? “We are definitely out there, doing everything we can to see if we can improve the squad. It’s a difficult window, we know that. We need to make sure it’s the right one that we go for.”

Does Brennan Johnson leaving, mean someone else will come in? “No, I think that’s two different situations.”

Keith Andrews has massively overachieved with Brentford this season as Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade have created so many problems in attack. Brentford hammered Bournemouth 4-1 last time out and are full of confidence.

Spurs scrapped to a crucial 1-0 win at Crystal Palace last time out and they needed that after a poor run of results with just one win in eight before it. They did beat Brentford 2-0 in early December and matched up well against the Bees.

Brentford team news, focus

Frank Onyeka and Dango Ouattara are away at AFCON, while Josh Dasilva, Reiss Nelson, Fabio Carvalho and Antoni Milambo are out injured. Sepp van den Berg faces a late fitness test. Brentford will look to set pieces and counters to punish any lapses in concentration from Spurs as Thiago and Schade are so direct and clinical.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Spurs continue to be hit by injuries as James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie and Dejan Kulusevski all remain out. Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are away at AFCON but Cristian Romero is back from suspension. Xavi Simons is still suspended and Lucas Bergvall is hoping to shake off a knock.

Crystal Palace host Tottenham Hotspur in a big London derby on Sunday.

WATCH — Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur

Palace continue to punch above their weight but they were hammered 4-1 at Leeds United last time out in a shock defeat. They’re still in the hunt for European qualification and pushed Arsenal all the way a few days ago as they lost to the Gunners on penalty kicks in the League Cup quarterfinals.

Spurs are in a real pickle as they lost at home to Liverpool last weekend and imploded once again. Thomas Frank saw his captain Cristian Romero sent off for another wild decision and Spurs have been their own worst enemy at multiple times this season as they sit four points behind Palace heading into this game.

Crystal Palace team news, focus

Palace are without Ismaila Sarr who is at AFCON with Senegal, while injuries have piled up in recent weeks. USMNT defender Chris Richards suffered a nasty injury against Arsenal and is a doubt. So too is Eddie Nketiah, while Cheick Doucoure, Daniel Munoz and Daichi Kamada are all out. Wharton is the main man in midfield, Guehi holds things together at the back and the duo of Mateta and Pino have an extra load in attack.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Spurs will be without Romero and Xavi Simons through suspension, while James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie and Dejan Kulusevski all remain out injured. Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are both away at AFCON. It’s likely that Kevin Danso comes in for Romero at the back, while Lucas Bergvall will be tasked with creating chances from midfield. Brennan Johnson, Joao Palhinha and Richarlison are all pushing to start.

What’s wrong with Tottenham Hotspur now? - NBC Sports
Description

Tottenham Hotspur sit 13th in the Premier League table after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool and Thomas Frank’s new job looks like it’s falling apart right before his eyes.

MORE — Recap, video highlights, analysis | Player ratings

Spurs have lost more games than they’ve won (again) and they’re one of the worst teams at home this season (again - 8 of 27 points). They spent aggressively in the summer transfer window and added quality players to the squad, but it’s still the same old, same old. So

Leadership, accountability a longstanding issue for Spurs

We’re nearly halfway through the season, and Spurs are 13th in the Premier League table (an improvement, to be fair) after yet another disappointing (and largely avoidable) home defeat. As always with Spurs, it’s not just that they lose, the frustration typically lies in how they do it. Xavi Simons was shown a red card in the 33rd minute for putting his studs into Virgil van Dijk’s upper calf with no chance whatsoever of winning the ball in the challenge, and then captain Cristian Romero — the World Cup winner tasked with leading a young squad forward in this post-Harry Kane and post-Heung-min Son era — got himself sent off for kicking out at Ibrahim Konate in the final few minutes, just as Spurs were making a late push for an equalizer that would save them from a fifth defeat in nine home games this season.

As seasons go by and Spurs’ best players slowly but surely leave the club, what’s left is the mismatched ruins of five different managers in six seasons — haphazardly orchestrated through various different transfer policies from a whole handful of different decision-makers over the years — and a squad that lacks leadership and accountability from top to bottom. Spurs failed to build another great team around Kane after firing Mauricio Pochettino in 2019 and eventually the club’s greatest-ever player felt he had no choice but to leave. Kane didn’t just take the goals and the assists with him, but he took the last bit of the toughness and tenacity that Pochettino instilled in his teams. The difference was noticeable after Kane left in 2023, and it’s even starker two and a half years later with Son also gone and an average squad age of 24.8 (2nd-youngest in the PL).

There was a sense each of the last two seasons that when things went right for Spurs, they really went right and it was something to see, but that kind of hope and belief and stubborn determination that defined Ange Postecoglou’s tenure is long gone. Spurs won a trophy back in May (maybe you heard), but it’s clear that it changed very little about the club, how it operates and how it views itself. That was at the center of everything Postecoglou preached, and it remains a problem months after the open-top bus parade. We’re six months into Frank’s tenure now, and it’s still unclear what the actual plan of attack is on a given night and the players often look just as confused as the fans. A quick thought on what the plan should be, though. A potential bright spot…

Bergvall and Gray, Spurs’ midfield of the future, is the duo for right now

It’s easy to say, “Play the young players, give them the experience and let them develop in games that mean something,” and pretend there aren’t going to be some bumps in the road along the way, but those bumps are a whole lot better than the nothingness Spurs have had in midfield up until this point. By calling for Bergvall and Gray to play regularly, and to do so together, is asking Frank to stake his job on the comings and goings of a pair of 19-year-olds in the toughest, most competitive league in the world. Any manager would be hesitant to do so, but you know what? The kids might actually be the best way for him to save his job.

They’re fearless (perhaps because they don’t know any better), always looking to play forward, whether by dribble or pass, and they have that youthful energy that allows them to never shirk their defensive duties. Bergvall is going to need to add some goals to his game in order to take the (big) leap from prospect to contributor, and Gray still needs to develop physically for the intensity and physicality of the Premier League, but they complement each other quite well and make an obvious long-term partnership.

Spurs vs Liverpool player ratings: Who starred in red card-filled thriller? - NBC Sports
Description

Liverpool continued their dominance over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, but it wasn’t the typical blowout we’ve seen in recent years, even after Xavi Simons was sent off in the first half.

MORE — Recap, video highlights, analysis

Alexander Isak scored the opening goal but injured himself in the process, and Hugo Ekitike scored what turned out to be in the winner, but not before Richarlison pulled a goal back for Spurs and made it very interesting late.

MORE — Arne Slot, Thomas Frank reaction

Here are the Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool player ratings in full, with marks out of 10 and analysis.

Spurs player ratings

Guglielmo Vicario: 5.5 - Could he have done better on the opening goal? Maybe.

Pedro Porro: 6.5 - Got the ball into the final third consistently, but the long, splitting balls into the channel — typically his specialty — were noticeably missing.

Cristian Romero: 5.5 - Was having another fantastic, heroic night of emergency defending and surging forward in attack. And then he decided to kick out at Ibrahim Konate and get himself sent off in stoppage time, with Spurs having a real go at Liverpool as they chased an equalizer.

Micky van de Ven: 6 - If there’s any defender in the world that’s made for man-down situations, it’s Van de Ven, but it comes at great cost to his in-possession work — his ability to carry the ball forward and bypass the (problematic) midfield is a godsend for Spurs most days.

Djed Spence: 6 - Most of Liverpool’s threat came down the other side, but Spence was key to defending at the back post.

Rodrigo Bentancur: 7 - Of Spurs’ defensive midfield options, Bentancur is the best passer of the bunch and probably needs to start most games from here on out. Speaking of needs to play and start more games…

Archie Gray: 6 - On one hand, Gray and Bergvall were somewhat outmatched and couldn’t quite keep up with the pace in central midfield. On the other hand, it was still one of the best midfield showings (for 30 minutes) that Spurs have had all season.

Lucas Bergvall: 6 - See above.

Mohammed Kudus: 5.5 - Created a bit of danger early on, but a non-factor for the final 30 minutes of his shift (subbed in the 58th) as Spurs were down to 10 men and it was slim pickings at that point.

Xavi Simons: 4 - Had a nice opening half-hour on both sides of the ball, but the challenge that got him sent off (in the 33rd minute) was one of the most needless, wayward acts you’ll see all season.

Randal Kolo Muani: 5.5 - Was a decent outlet alongside Kudus after the red card, but his fluffed header in the 27th was his most important moment of the game.

Substitutes

Richarlison: 7.5 - What an impact off the bench. Not only did he score the goal that gave Spurs a hope at the end, but he had one or two more near-breakaway moments that simply weren’t there before he came on. He’s got four goals in his last seven PL games and only five players have scored more than him this season.

Liverpool player ratings

Alisson: 6 - Didn’t have to make any difficult saves and played high up the field as needed to keep Spurs pinned in at times.

Conor Bradley: 6.5 - Came off injured at halftime, but before that he made a stellar block on a cross from Bergvall that would have put Kudus in one-on-one to open the scoring.

Ibrahim Konate: 7 - Stepped forward and broke up counters when he needed to and didn’t make any disastrous mistakes in possession. That’s all you’re looking for from the guy next to VvD.

Virgil van Dijk: 7.5 - Was virtually flawless in possession and played penetrating pass after penetrating pass.

Milos Kerkez: 7 - Overlapped down the left, kept Spurs’ defense stretched wider than they’d like to be, and eventually it paid off.

Ryan Gravenberch: 7.5 - He ran the show from the moment Simons was sent off, with and without the ball, he had a hand in everything.

Curtis Jones: 7 - Precisely the type of player you want on the field with a man advantage, because he gets the ball forward with such ease. Rarely spectacular, but always functional and a pivotal piece.

Alexis Mac Allister: 6 - Couldn’t find the time or space he needed to attempt more shots, or to put the ones he did take on target.

Dominik Szoboszlai: 6.5 - A quieter game by his recent lofty standards. Mostly circulated possession and tracked back to end counter-attacks before they could start. It is undeniable that they’re a better defensive team with him in the lineup over Mohamed Salah.

Florian Wirtz: 7 - Fortunately for Wirtz, after 11 PL appearances without a goal or assist for Liverpool, Santa Claus delivered Spurs on a platter for him just in time for Christmas. It worked for Eberechi Eze right before Thanksgiving, and it worked for Wirtz today.

Hugo Ekitike: 7.5 - He just does it all as a center forward, doesn’t he? Back to goal, in the open field, in the air. What a header for the second goal, and it turned out to be the winner.

Alexander Isak suffers distressing injury while scoring for Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur - NBC Sports
Description

Liverpool star Alexander Isak finally got a Premier League goal for his new club but the joy was instantly dimmed by an apparent serious injury to his left leg.

Isak ran onto a gorgeous through ball by Florian Wirtz and buried a shot past Guglielmo Vicario while Micky van de Ven slid through the Swedish striker.

MORE — Spurs vs Liverpool live updates, video highlights

The 26-year-old was in clear distress and did not celebrate his goal after his left leg was caught between the cutting legs of Van de Ven.

He needed to be helped from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium pitch for Jeremie Frimpong in the 60th minute.

Alexander Isak injury history: Star suffers distressing injury while scoring for Liverpool

We’ll share all of Arne Slot’s comments on Isak’s injury as soon as he speaks from North London about a striker who has suffered a number of injuries since arriving in England.

Isak was pretty durable for Real Sociedad but lost time early in his first season with Newcastle. The Swede scored twice in his first three Premier League games before missing 11 with a thigh problem.

His second season at St. James’ Park saw two separate three-game absences with groin ailments, but a broken toe only cost him two matches last season as he played 34 PL games for the Magpies.

Hopefully this injury isn’t as bad as it appeared on camera.

Spurs host Liverpool on Saturday hoping to get back on track to kick off the festive period.

WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool

Thomas Frank is under serious pressure after Spurs were hammered 3-0 at Nottingham Forest last weekend. That came after two shutout wins against Brentford and Slavia Prague as inconsistency and errors are hampering Spurs’ progress this season. But they are just four points behind Liverpool heading into this weekend and a win would do wonders for belief that they can push for a top four finish.

Liverpool are feeling a bit better about themselves as they beat Brighton at home last weekend, and that came after a big away win at Inter Milan in the Champions League. Arne Slot has also handled the Mohamed Salah situation well, for now, and the Egyptian King has now gone to the Africa Cup of Nations for the next few weeks. Given their schedule, Liverpool have a serious chance to really kick on over the festive period.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Pape Matar Sarr is away on AFCON duty, while Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Radu Dragusin and Destiny Udogie are all out injured. Frank has been using the trio of Kolo Muani, Richarlison and Kudus in attack, with Xavi Simons showing flashes of his brilliance in recent weeks. But if Spurs really want to kick on they have to stop making silly mistakes on the ball at the back.

Liverpool team news, focus

Injuries are starting to pile up again for Liverpool with Joe Gomez, Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo and Wataru Endo all out through injury. That is a blow heading into the busy festive period. Jeremie Frimpong is working his way back to fitness, while Conor Bradley is back from suspension and will slot straight back in at right back. Hugo Ekitike (who has scored four goals in his last two league games) and Alexander Isak could start as a duo in attack again with Florian Wirtz buzzing around underneath them. Mac Allister, Jones and Gravenberch will likely start as the midfield trio, because they are the only midfielders Liverpool have fit and available.
