The final international break of 2025 is done and dusted, and what a way for the Premier League to return with Arsenal hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Sunday (11:30 am ET).

WATCH — Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur

The Gunners (26 points) are top of the table after 11 games, four points clear of Manchester City and eight above defending champions Liverpool (currently in 8th place), the only side to Mikel Arteta’s men in any competition this season. But injuries are starting to pile up for Arsenal and perhaps the first cracks came to light just before the break, when they conceded a stoppage-time equalizer and drew newly promoted Sunderland 2-2. A handful of key attackers could be available off the bench this weekend, as Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke are all close to returning.

Speaking of the walking wounded, Spurs are once again atop the injury list with four central midfielders and two strikers unavailable for Thomas Frank’s suddenly shorthanded side. Predictably, Spurs have struggled to create scoring chances (11.0 xG from 11 games, 6th-lowest) and, much like Arsenal, made the most of set pieces to cobble together the PL’s 4th-best attacking record (19 goals). Spurs have scored six times from set pieces thus far, to Arsenal’s eye-popping tally of 10 (half of their 20 on the season).

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United player ratings: Who stood out in thriller? - NBC Sports
Description

The Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United player ratings were intriguing to dish out as a thriller played out in north London.

MORE — Recap, video highlights

There were some superb individual displays and moments between two very evenly-matched teams, and a draw was probably a fair result when all is said and done.

Below are the Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United player ratings out of 10, with analysis on how they got on.

Tottenham Hotspur player ratings

Guglielmo Vicario: 6 - Could he have done more on both headers? De Ligt’s late equalizer will haunt him.

Pedro Porro: 5 - Saw plenty of the ball but the usual quality just wasn’t there on his crosses.

Cristian Romero: 6 - Could have scored with a difficult flick in the second half. Had to come off late on with an injury.

Micky van de Ven: 7 - No marauding runs forward but some great defending, including a wonderful last-ditch tackle to deny Sesko.

Djed Spence: 5 - Barely had the chance to get forward and sloppy on the ball.

Pape Matar Sarr: 6 - Buzzed around in midfield and never gave United a moment of peace.

Joao Palhinha: 6 - Had a shot on goal which was saved well and was his usual solid self in midfield.

Brennan Johnson: 6 - Lively throughout. Tried to force the issue and scored but was just offside.

Xavi Simons: 6 - Tried his best to get on the turn and get Spurs going in attack but was crowded out and bullied often. Overall, he tried to make things happen. Fans didn’t like it when he was subbed off late on.

Richarlison: 5 - Completely missed his header with Spurs’ best chance of the first half. Some sloppy passes but then flicked home a header late on as he thought he had won it.

Randal Kolo Muani: 5 - Bit harsh to be hooked at half time but it wasn’t really working as he and Richarlison made the same runs and had very little service.

Substitutions

Wilson Odobert: 8 - Brilliant after coming on at the break as his shot was flicked in by Richarlison.

Destiny Udogie: 8 - Superb with Odobert down the left and his cross set up Tel for Spurs’ opener.

Mathys Tel: 7 - Lovely turn and finish for his goal.

Rodrigo Bentancur: N/A

Kevin Danso: N/A

Manchester United player ratings

Senne Lammens: 8 - Made two great saves at the start of the second half from Romero and Palhinha and looks so relaxed.

Matthijs de Ligt: 7 - Unlucky with the deflection on Tel’s goal but popped up with a towering header at the back post in the 96th minute to grab a draw.

Harry Maguire: 7 - Another solid display. Had to come off with what looked like an injury to his right hamstring.

Luke Shaw: 7 - Solid and reliable. Didn’t get forward much but did the simple things well.

Noussair Mazraoui: 6 - Only just back from injury and getting up to speed. He was okay. Subbed off early in the second half.

Casemiro: 7 - His usual combative self but subbed off in the second half and United missed him in midfield as they conceded twice.

Bruno Fernandes: - Couldn’t get on the ball as much as he would like but was always positive when he did have it.

Patrick Dorgu: 8 - Excellent display on the left. Surged forward but often had nobody really supporting him. Won plenty of free kicks.

Bryan Mbeumo: 7 - Took his goal really well and never stopped running. A bit isolated in the second half.

Amad Diallo: 8 - Lovely cross for Mbeumo’s goal and he was very dangerous in a more advance role.

Matheus Cunha: 6 - Did okay, but never really got into the game and was subbed off in the second half.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United live updates! — By Joe Prince-Wright

Odobert on for Kolo Muani

Spurs make a half time sub with Wilson Odobert on for Randal Kolo Muani. Disappointing display from Kolo Muani. Odobert will be tasked with getting at United and being more direct.

Half time: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Manchester United

A few boos from the home fans as the half time whistle goes and that was pretty turgid from Spurs. Man United looked more confidence and lively when they got the ball into the final third and Mbeumo’s header is the difference. Say it quietly, but as it stands Man United sit second in the Premier league table.

Bryan Mbeumo heads home!

That has been coming, as Spurs are messing around with it at the back and can’t get out. Cunha then plays in Amad and he clips a lovely cross to the back post which Mbeumo heads home. He loves a goal against Spurs, with five goals in nine against them. His old boss Thomas Frank won’t be happy with that Spurs defending...

Cunha denied!

Matheus Cunha somehow gets it past Cristian Romero and his shot is on target but Sarr is back for Spurs and deflects the shot away for a corner, which comes to nothing despite a few handball shouts on Richarlison. United starting to sustain some pressure now.

Richarlison misses a header... completely

Great cross in from the right from Johnson and Richarlison has a free header, 12 yards out, but he totally misses the ball. He can’t believe it. Neither can every single Spurs fans on the planet.

Big chance for Mbeumo!

Bruno Fernandes with a lovely pass through to Bryan Mbeumo but he decides to cross the ball rather than shoot. The offside flag is up but replays show Mbeumo was probably onside. Lovely play from United there.

Tottenham Hotspur lineup

Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Palhinha, Sarr; Johnson, Simons, Kolo Muani; Richarlison

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United preview

Spurs were beaten and battered by Chelsea right there on their home turf last weekend, in what was easily the worst performance of Thomas Frank’s short tenure. Spurs attempted just three shots (all by Mohammed Kudus) for a grand total of 0.10 xG. The attack has been disjointed from the opening day of the season, with the occasional exception being Kudus, and Spurs currently rank in the bottom-third of the PL for xG (1.01 per game). However, Frank has fixed so much of what was wrong with Spurs at the other end of the field (2nd-fewest goal conceded, with 8 in 10 games).

Ruben Amorim has gone the other direction in his first full season at Man United, overseeing one of the league’s best attacks (5th-most goals scored, 17) and one of the league’s leakiest defenses (6th-most conceded, 16) — and the Red Devils have the xG and xGA numbers to prove it. Bryan Mbeumo, who played four seasons under Frank at Brentford, leads the way with four goals (and an assist) in 10 PL appearances after joining Man United for $95 million this summer.

VIDEO: Spurs’ Micky van de Ven runs box to box, scores potential Puskas Award winner - NBC Sports
Description

Micky van de Ven, one of the most electric footballers in the world, scored one of the most electric goals you’re going to see all season, to put Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 up on Copenhagen in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

MORE — Champions League fixtures & results | UCL table

Tottenham Hotspur’s towering center back picked up the ball on the edge of his own box, strided past four Copenhagen players, jinked past another on the halfway line and went the rest of the way unobstructed before slamming a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper at the near post. The ball recovery of a defender, the dribbling of a world-class winger, and the finishing of a natural no. 9.

Spurs went on to win 4-0 despite playing the final 35 minutes down a man after Brennan Johnson was sent off for a studs-to-the-achilles tackle, after he scored the opening goal in the 19th minute.

We’ll be seeing Van de Ven’s goal again (and maybe again and again) when the Puskas Award is handed out in December.

Micky, take a bow, son.

Enzo Maresca reaction — Chelsea boss speaks after Caicedo spurs Blues to London derby win - NBC Sports
Description

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea is back in the win column at the expense of London derby rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, collecting three big points away from home.

Moises Caicedo was the star for Chelsea, and the Blues needed every bit of their effort to solve Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario.

MORE — Spurs vs Chelsea player ratings out of 10 | Spurs v Chelsea recap, highlights

The Chelsea manager will be happy to be back in the Premier League win column following a loss to Sunderland in Week 9, and perhaps happier than his defense looked stronger than it did in a victorious seven-goal League Cup scrap with Wolves at midweek.

But is that how Maresca sees it?

Enzo Maresca reaction — Chelsea boss speaks after Caicedo spurs Blues to London derby win

How do you feel? “Was a good performance for sure to come into this stadium in this team in this moment where they look very, very good, you need this kind of performance to get three points.”

How good is Moises Caicedo? “He’s top. In this moment, I think him with Rodri are the top best defensive midfielders probably in the world.”

Frustrated by not finishing a second chance? “Especially in England, 1-nil is not finished. Today we could’ve scored 1-2 more and the game was 2-nil, 3-nil. But we are very happy, 1-nil away against Tottenham, clean sheet.”

How good were Wesley Fofana and Trevoh Chalobah together? “We said many times that Wes is a top defender for us. We were one of the teams before the game with the most goals in the Premier League. The problem is the goals conceded are too many and we want to be defensively solid.”

Back in fourth place. “It’s the first thing I said to the players. We went from 11th to 4th, it’s a matter of maintaining balance. In the last seven games, we won six and lost one against Sunderland. Everyone was saying something was wrong.”

Moises Caicedo reaction

“We needed this win, so the reaction from the team was so good and everybody’s happy now.”

“These games we need to play like this. The team was so good. I’m so happy for the performance from the boys. Now we need to keep it and for sure we want to keep winning things.”

Joao Pedro reaction

“Big game, derby. We knew they had a good team and we had to do 100% to win the game. Now we need to look forward.”

On Moises Caicedo’s assist for his goal: “Moises — everyone knows he’s a top top player. It’s a pleasure to play with him. When he passed to me, at halftime I told him I have to invite him to dinner. I want to say thank you to him and to the team for the support. I scored but I still need to improve. I had a lot of chances. It’s been a long time since I scored for Chelsea, and the team expects that from me.”

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur meet for the first time this season and it’s a knockout affair when the League Cup fourth round hits St. James’ Park on Wednesday.

The hosts are tournament’s reigning champions, and Eddie Howe’s men will hope to defend their title after defeating Bradford City 4-1 in the third round last month.

MORE — League Cup results | League Cup winners, records

Spurs claimed long-sought silverware last season as well, but that was under Ange Postecoglou. New boss Thomas Frank would be thrilled to post a deep tourney run or two on his Spurs resume this season. They beat Doncaster Rovers to reach the fourth round.

Both the Magpies and Spurs are coming off Premier League wins at the weekend, and will meet for the first time in the league come Dec. 2.

Yet are the odds in Spurs favor? Newcastle swept the season series last year and have won five of their last six against Tottenham Hotspur. That seems uneven for two well-respected sides.

Tottenham Hotspur once again struggled to create scoring chances from open play, but once again they were unstoppable on set pieces as center back Micky van de Ven scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Everton on Sunday.

EVERTON 0-3 SPURS — Video highlights & recap

Below is the latest Thomas Frank reaction, speaking after Spurs trio of headed goals at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Spurs boss say after beating Everton?

“Very happy to be able to go to here at Everton which is a very good team and they’ve been very good at home, a team that is always well set up under David Moyes. I’m extremely happy. Any away match that you win in the Premier League three-nil is super, super impressive. Extremely happy with many things, but I think first half we took control of the ball — phase one, phase two, more passes and controlled the game more — and the second half was a little bit more of a dogfight, which it can be in the Premier League.”

On both attacking and defending set pieces: “I think set pieces are so crucial. We all see it, there is more and more focus on it. It is a key area and I said it from the beginning when I came in: We wanted to really focus hard on it, in both boxes. We scored two very good goals [from set pieces] and the boys competed excellently in our own box.”

On Micky van de Ven scoring two goals: “Very happy with that. I’ve been after him a little bit since we came to the club, I think he had scored one header in his whole career. So we really worked hard on that, Micky really worked hard on that and now he’s got three [headed goals]. Two today is very good.”

Thomas Frank reaction: Spurs boss on Cristian Romero injury, blown lead, loss to Aston Villa - NBC Sports
Description

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank got a great start to Sunday’s home Premier League match versus Aston Villa.

Unfortunately, Rodrigo Bentancur’s sixth-minute goal was the only fine finish they’d see as Spurs could not convert their chances and ultimately lost 2-1 to the visiting Villans.

MORE — Spurs vs Villa recap, video highlights

Spurs were poor up top despite some strong periods of possession and threat, and Villa’s changes put the visitors in line for their equalizer and winner.

How did Thomas Frank react? Read on...

Thomas Frank reaction: Spurs boss on Cristian Romero injury, blown lead, home loss to Villa

Thoughts on the game? “It was exactly the game I expected it to be. Very tight between two good teams. I think overall it could’ve gone either way and a draw would’ve been a fair result. They scored two goals from outside of the box in moments where you cannot expect them to score — two goals from almost nothing. We could not do that. I think overall actually the performance was very good against a good team.”

Cristian Romero injury update: “Minor, minor adductor I think. He had been feeling it a little bit the last few days. He was supposed to be fine, he wasn’t. I think it will not be big.”

Difference in game? “We started well with good intensity. We had maybe four or five very good transition moments where we need to get something and we didn’t. Villa scored out of nothing and that was the difference.”
