Description

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank gave his reaction after their win at Leeds on Saturday and as always the Danish coach was magnanimous in victory as he celebrated with his players in the pouring rain.

Frank is as honest, engaging and thoughtful as Premier League managers come and it’s brilliant to see him get off to such a great start in charge of Spurs.

MORE — Leeds vs Spurs recap, highlights, analysis

Here’s the latest Thomas Frank reaction after Spurs won at Leeds to make it 14 points from a possible 21 to start the Premier League season.

Thomas Frank reaction

On the reaction at the end to this win: “I think we needed a win,” Frank told BBC Match of the Day. “The last three games definitely a draw. That feeling to get over the line and get three points I thought was big. But also in the respect for Leeds and Elland Road. They haven’t lost here in more than a year and we are very aware of the task ahead of us. And we overcome that in a very good way. I thought we played overall a very good game. We looked good offensively. Really creating chances and opportunities and could and should have got more out of some of the situations. I know they hit the post and it looks more dangerous but it was from a difficult angle and then their goal is a little bit of a deflection and a bit odd. Then it is right to the end where it is a bit carnage. For a big part of the game I think we defended well and were very good offensively, so a well deserved win here.”

On the character of his side, and the extra creativity of Xavi Simons: “The character was the foundation to go here, get through the spells where everything is not perfect. To keep going, keep the cool head and keep the focus. Then I agree, there were some very good spells with let’s say creativity is the word, that is part of it, but also we find a little more the right positions and I felt Xavi, that was his best game for us.”

Leeds 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Frank’s sensible Spurs continue great start - NBC Sports
Description

Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1 at Leeds United on Saturday, as Thomas Frank’s fine start to life in charge of Spurs continued.

WATCH — Full match replay

Mathys Tel gave Spurs the lead in the first half but Noah Okafor equalized before the break in a tight, tense game.

Mohammed Kudus scored what turned out to be the winner as Spurs looked just a little more dangerous in attack compared to Leeds.

With the win Spurs move on to 14 points for the season, while Leeds stay on eight.

Spurs up for the scrap

The talent has never been questioned in this Spurs squad but the fighting spirit and mentality has. Not anymore. At least early in this season under Thomas Frank. Before the game Frank lauded his players for bringing the energy and intensity in each and every game this season. They had to dig deep against Leeds to grind out the win and they’re showing fighting spirit, despite all of their injuries, to get plenty of wins on the board early in the season. Frank has made Spurs more sensible, robust and pragmatic and even if they don’t create as many chances as they’ve done in previous years, they always look like they will get the job done. Scoring more goals is the next step for this Spurs side but Frank has built a solid foundation to build from and any good side has that. When the likes of Solanke, Kulusevski and Maddison return, Spurs will have tons more creativity in this team but at the moment it’s their organization and desire which is winning them games. That is exactly what Frank was expected to deliver and he’s doing it. It’s not flashy or flamboyant but Spurs are structured and disciplined and have enough talent, even with injuries impacting their attack, to win plenty of games this season.

What’s next?

After the international break Leeds head to fellow new boys Burnley on Saturday, October 18. Spurs host Aston Villa on Sunday, October 19.

Leeds vs Tottenham Hotspur score: 1-2

Okafor 34'; Tel 23', Kudus 58’

Leeds vs Tottenham Hotspur live updates! — By Joe Prince-Wright

Vicario denies Piroe in stoppage time!

What a stop down low from Vicario. He denies Piroe and punches the air in delight. Leeds pushing hard to make it 2-2 late on.

Longstaff fires wide

Leeds have picked up the tempo after going behind and Sean Longstaff smashes a shot just wide. The rain continues to pour at Elland Road.

Kudus has a low shot deflected in

Spurs are back ahead and Kudus cuts in and his low shot deflects off Struijk and flies in. Kudus has his first goal for Spurs and he deserves it.

Ampadu lucky to be on the pitch

That is a late challenge from Ampadu who catches Porro on the shin. Ampadu is lucky to not get a red card there.

Half time: Leeds 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

That was a really fun half of football and 1-1 feels about right. Spurs will be disappointed they couldn’t kick on after taking the lead but Leeds are battling away and have had chances too. Thomas Frank’s Spurs need to create some more chances early in the second half to get some momentum going.

Tel hits the bar!

Odobert is in down the left and loops in a cross for Tel who heads against the crossbar. Great effort. That was a difficult header to generate power.

Okafor equalizes!

Leeds whip in a lovely cross from the right and Brenden Aaronson’s shot is saved by Vicario but he can’t hold on to it. The ball drops to Noah Okafor who taps home to make it 1-1. There was another ball on the pitch that almost rolled into the way of Okafor’s shot before it went in, but luckily for Leeds it didn’t. Great noise inside Elland Road!

Kudus smashes way over

Spurs are away on the break now and Udogie sets up Kudus but he curls his shot way over the bar. Spurs should really be 2-0 up.

Calvert-Lewin blazes a great chance over the top

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is in the penalty box and driving away from Bentancur, but his shot is smashed way over the bar.

Tel’s deflected shot flies in!

That goal was coming and Bentancur latches onto a loose ball in midfield and Mathys Tel is played in. He still has a lot to do but Tel’s shot deflects off Struijk and flies straight into the top corner.

Spurs slowly waking up

A few decent attacks from Spurs, especially down the left, as Destiny Udogie is found by Xavi Simons and decides to shoot from a tight angle but Karl Darlow pushes it away. It is a very even game so far.

Rodon hits the post!

Great free kick in from Longstaff and Vicario comes out flapping and gets nowhere near the ball. Joe Rodon heads towards goal at the back post from a tight angle but he hits the post. Leeds so close to scoring early and Vicario looks extremely relieved.

Leeds lineup

Darlow; Bogle, Rodon, Struijk, Gudmundsson; Longstaff, Ampadu, Stach; Aaronson, Calvert-Lewin, Okafor

Tottenham Hotspur lineup

Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Palhinha, Bentancur; Kudus, Simons, Odobert; Tel

Leeds team news, focus

Goalkeeper Lucas Perri remains out, while Wilfried Gnonto is also struggling with a calf injury. Leeds have been getting the ball forward to Dominic Calvert-Lewin early and often and although he’s missed a few big chances, the English striker has been a real handful so far this season. Leeds look really solid at the back and in midfield.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Spurs will use the full breadth of their squad following the midweek trip up to the Article Circle against Bodo/Glimt. The likes of Cristian Romero, Joao Palhinha, Destiny Udogie and Mohammed Kudus should all come back in to start. Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Radu Dragusin and Yves Bissouma are all out, while Randal Kolo Muani is a doubt. That means Richarlison should start up top, as the quality of players out for Spurs is quite something.

Leeds vs Tottenham Hotspur preview

The Yorkshire side have fared well on their return to the Premier League, grabbing eight points from their opening six games. They drew 2-2 at home against Bournemouth last weekend and coughed up a late, late equalizer which will have left a bitter taste in their mouth. However, that disappointment shows how far this side have come and aside from the hammering they took at Arsenal, Leeds have been in every single game so far this season.

Spurs were in midweek UEFA Champions League action as they fought back late on to draw 2-2 at Bodo/Glimt after being 2-0 down. Thomas Frank’s Spurs are a more sensible bunch and they ground out a 1-1 draw at home to Wolves last weekend thanks to another late equalizer. Just one defeat in their opening six games has Spurs on 11 points and just four points off the top of the table heading into the weekend.

Leeds vs Tottenham Hotspur prediction

This is going to be tight and the game will be won on counters and set pieces. It seems like Spurs may just edge it. Leeds 1-2 Spurs.

Thomas Frank reaction — Tottenham Hotspur boss, Joao Palhinha lament lack of three points vs Wolves

Thomas Frank reaction — Spurs boss speaks after Tottenham Hotspur held by Wolves - NBC Sports
Description

Thomas Frank is scratching his head a bit after Tottenham Hotspur’s wasteful first half required a stoppage-time equalizer from Joao Palhinha to collect a 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers in North London on Saturday.

MORE — Spurs vs Wolves recap, video highlights

A day of surprise results in the Premier League found a fitting inclusion in Wolves taking a point from Spurs and it could’ve been three as Santiago Bueno’s opportunistic cash-in off a second-half corner gave the visitors a surprise lead.

Mohammed Kudus was lively in the first half but Spurs lacked urgency and got very little out of its center forward position. So, of course, it was midweek hero and defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha who drew Tottenham Hotspur level in stoppage time.

Here’s what Frank said after the draw.

Thomas Frank reaction — Spurs boss speaks after Tottenham Hotspur held by Wolves

What did you think? “I think we played a good first half in many ways. Without having enough clear-cut chances we got into dangerous situations quite a few times where we could’ve done quite a few more. We had a massive chance with a Mohammed Kudus disallowed goal. Wolves were nowhere near anything.

“The second half, after their goal, I thought we lost a bit of control. We didn’t keep our structure enough. We were rushing too much in my opinion. The effort was fantastic. We got a well-deserved equalizer in the end but when you’re down 1-nil for a lot of minutes you can’t stay you deserved a win.”

Palhinha’s goal was a moment to celebrate: “You’re happy because the players worked so hard. It was a well-deserved point in general. You play home at Wolves who haven’t won yet so of course you want three points, but it’s a reminder that the league is relentless.”

Could this be deepest PL season yet? “Maybe you’re right. It’s definitely very, very competitive. No doubt. Yeah, very tight.”

Joao Palhinha reaction — Winning should’ve been ‘mandatory’

That was some game: “I’m not happy at all to be honest. That’s a game we definitely need to win, especially at home. We did a great first half. The second not really. We could create more chances. We started to make everything so quick and when you are losing 1-nil against these kinds of teams you need to push. It’s one more game to improve, to analyze. It’s not going to be easy, we knew it. Me and my teammates are not happy because this kind of result is mandatory.”

Tottenham Hotspur will try to extend Thomas Frank’s fantastic start to life in north London when they host a winless Wolves side still seeking their first point of the Premier League season on Saturday (3 pm ET).

WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolves

Spurs (3rd place, 10 points) fought back from 2-0 down to draw Brighton 2-2 at home last weekend, followed by a comfortable 3-0 victory over League One side Doncaster Rovers in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday. With Wolves, Leeds, Aston Villa and Everton up next on the fixture list, Frank will be hoping not only for four wins from four games before the international break but some serious progression toward developing a dominant style of play. Spurs will need every bit of it before they face Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle in four of five games after that.

Vitor Pereira’s job isn’t likely to be under threat anytime soon after he signed a new three-year contract just last week. That said, any sort of positive result will do at this point for Wolves (20th, 0 points). They took their first lead of the season last weekend when Ladislav Krejci scored his first goal (8th minute) since signing for the club this summer, but were 3-1 down at halftime as Leeds scored on exactly half of the shots they attempted in the game. Pereira made a triple change at halftime, to little avail.

Tottenham Hotspur conceded twice as many goals to Brighton on Saturday as they had in four games to begin the 2025-26 Premier League season, but Thomas Frank’s men fought back for a 2-2 draw and a satisfying point considering the circumstances.

BRIGHTON 2-2 SPURS — Video highlights & recap

Below is the latest Thomas Frank reaction, speaking after Spurs’ comeback down on the south coast.

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Spurs boss say after coming back to draw Brighton?

“I thought we looked extremely strong. I’m very happy with the overall performance. I think, actually, it was potentially our best performance of the season — the full picture. We dominated, in my opinion, more or less throughout the game. We created enough chances, but we probably lacked to create a three or four big chances. For me, if there should have been a winner it should have clearly been us.

“What I loved from the players was the mentality. This group of players were here last year, from 2-0 up to losing 3-2, now we are 2-0 down and we get 2-2, and I thought we were closer to getting the three points. The mentality was fantastic. The physicality from the players while playing midweek [in UEFA Champions League] and then go again, just shows that they are fit and they’re strong. When you’re 2-0 down away from home against a good team, it’s a fine point.”

Brighton and Hove Albion hopes to take advantage of a full week’s preparation for Champions League-busy Tottenham Hotspur when the two sides meet at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Fabian Hurzeler’s Seagulls are 1-1-2 through four matches, and the young Brighton boss is hoping to get the better of Thomas Frank for the first time. Frank’s Brentford beat and drew Brighton last season, though Hurzeler did the double over Spurs.

WATCH — Brighton vs Tottenham Hotspur

Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur tenure has started in wonderful fashion. Spurs hung with PSG in the UEFA Super Cup Final before losing in penalties, and they’ve since won four of five matches, all clean sheets.

Spurs have allowed just a single goal in a 1-0 loss to Bournemouth, and beaten Burnley, Man City, West Ham, and now Champions League opponent Villarreal. The UCL game was Tuesday in North London, so Spurs have had time to rebound ahead of this trip to Brighton.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur bounced back in a big way on Saturday, as Thomas Frank’s side hammered West Ham at the London Stadium to rebound from their feeble defeat to Bournemouth prior to the international break.

WEST HAM 3-0 SPURS — Video highlights & recap

Below is the latest Thomas Frank reaction, speaking after Spurs’ derby domination in east London.

What did Thomas Frank say after Spurs hammered West Ham?

“I think overall it was a good performance. I think in the first half we didn’t really give anything [to them]. On the flip side, I felt we were close. We had some good shots and crosses in the box and we dominated, we kept them backed in. And then we scored the goal second half, we came out well. Sometimes the game can change, the momentum can change just after halftime, but we just kept going.”

“Of course the red card helps, but I felt we were dominant anyway.”

“I think [the red card] was the right decision. [Tomas] Soucek is a very honest player, a player I respect a lot, so I don’t think that was the intention, but it was a red card.”

On Xavi Simons making his debut: “I thought he was good. I thought he was really good. It was really positive and promising, there’s more to come. Excellent ball for the goal, I think he took initiative on the ball, he created something when he was on the ball. So I was happy with that.”

On the second goal: “It was a fantastic pass from [Cristian] Romero — he’s got that in his locker — actually, we trained on it a little bit yesterday, that run from Lucas [Bergvall] and that ball. So it was perfect — perfect from Romero and perfect from Lucas.”

On rotating the team after internationals and before Champions League: “It’s a fine balance — we want to perform and win every game, we can’t look too far ahead, we need to stay focused on the first one, but need to have a little think of [upcoming fixtures].

Xavi Simons, on making his Spurs debut and assisting a goal

“Really happy with the win first of all, and to make my debut in the Premier League is such a special moment for me. … Always has been a dream of mine to play here on the biggest stage, the best [league] of all. Now I’m here with a magnificent team and I’m really enjoying the first days here.”

“We know that set pieces are just as important as [the rest of] the game. In the second half, we talked about it — with Pape [Matar Sarr] — and I found him [for the goal].”

“Obviously I played my whole life in the no. 10 position, but the last couple of years I’ve developed on the left side. I’m a player that wants to go for the 1-on-1, take on my defender, try to help the team scoring goals and making assists.”

Transfer deadline day: What do Manchester United, Chelsea, Spurs still need?

Transfer deadline day: What do Manchester United, Chelsea, Spurs still need? - NBC Sports
Description

The summer transfer window is set to close on Premier League clubs at 2 pm ET on Monday, and it’s quite clear that a few teams still need to make another signing or two to address weaknesses in their squads.

RECAPS — Chelsea 2-0 Fulham | Man United 3-2 Burnley | Spurs 0-1 Bournemouth

Three of those sides were in action on Saturday, as Chelsea and Manchester United picked up victories and Tottenham Hotspur looked more like the Spurs of last season rather than Thomas Frank’s world-beaters from a week ago.

Manchester United transfer needs

Disclaimer: At this point, anyone that’s available and obtainable probably isn’t good enough to step right in and immediately restore Man United to one of the best sides in Europe. That tends to be how it works: The best players get to pick their new club first, and then it’s a domino effect for everyone else to get theirs, meaning nearly all of the best players that were available this summer have already been signed or made a final decision to remain at their current club. It works the same way for clubs by the way, which might just explain why United are left to overpay for whoever’s left at the very end of every window. We know United are still going to throw a bunch more money at the problem, so let’s speculate…

Defensive midfielder — If Bruno Fernandes is going to play deeper in midfield, Ruben Amorim needs another midfielder who can pass the ball in order to push Fernandes into the attack. Otherwise, United’s best player is going to spend all season dropping 80 yards from goal to receive the ball.

Goalkeeper — Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir aren’t The Guy, but sadly it seems Gianluigi Donnarumma has (smartly) decided on Man City instead of United.

Chelsea transfer needs

What do you get for the club that has already already bought itself everything it could ever need (and more)? Chelsea are unbeaten and went top of the Premier League table (for the time being) with their (rather fortuitous) victory over Fulham on Saturday, but they probably still need to add one more player to the squad.

Left-side center back — Anytime a left-footed, ball-playing center back goes down with a long-term injury, it’s going to be a big blow. Levi Colwill tore his ACL right before the season started and Chelsea have desperately missed his on-ball ability in their first three games this season. Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah are highly capable PL defenders, but they aren’t going to play aggressive balls forward to spring a midfielder and a transition opportunity out of nothing, and Chelsea have to be able to do that otherwise they will struggle to create chances aside from counter-attacks and set pieces.

Striker…? — So, within the span of about 6 hours on Saturday, Chelsea sanctioned Nicolas Jackson’s departure to Bayern Munich (a record-breaking loan, no less) and Liam Delap picked up an injury that is going to keep him out 6-8 weeks, so Chelsea canceled Jackson’s loan despite the fact he was already on the ground in Germany. They clearly don’t want him to be at the club this season, but now they need him to be, unless they were able to make — gasp — another signing.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer needs

It’s been a transfer window of roundabouts and whoopsie-doos for Tottenham Hotspur, but they’ve pretty much ended up with everything they would have wanted at the start of the summer. If not for James Maddison tearing his ACL in preseason, Spurs would likely be done with their transfer business after officially unveiling Xavi Simons on Saturday. So, this one’s pretty simple…

Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Bournemouth: Cherries cruise past sorry Spurs

Description

The magical start to Thomas Frank’s tenure came crashing down rather quickly on Saturday, as Tottenham Hotspur were incredibly lucky to lose 1-0 to Bournemouth at home.

WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur vs Bournemouth full match replay

Evanilson put the visitors ahead in the 5th minute, and the Cherries continued to create chance after chance while Spurs didn’t have their first shot of the game until the 55th minute (only 5 total, 1 on target, 0.17 xG). It was the kind of performance that became a depressing norm last season under Ange Postecoglou.

MORE — Thomas Frank reaction

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made 5 saves (a couple of them fantastic) to keep the scoreline at 1-0 throughout, but Spurs couldn’t do anything with all the possession they had (62 percent) until the final 15 minutes. Even then, it amounted to 3 shots for 0.10 xG. Spurs head into the international break with some soul searching to do, once again.

Abomination, or abberation?

Wow, that was bad from Spurs. Not just bad, not Ange bad, not Mourinho or Conte or Stellini or even Nuno bad. From the high of last week’s comprehensive victory over Manchester City, to this kind of face-plant against Bournemouth, is a shocking turn of events — even for this club. It’s clear that Spurs still need a midfielder who can move the ball forward and find a teammate in the final third, because it was far too easy for Bournemouth to usher Spurs out to the wings, at which point Bournemouth’s defenders dropped deeper to deny the immediate ball in behind, at which point Pedro Porro, Djed Spence, Mohammed Kudus and Brennan Johnson had few options and even fewer ideas.

The former Brentford boss beat Burnley 3-0 on opening day, as expected, before really turning heads with a 2-0 victory away to Premier League title contenders Manchester City last weekend. Frank has been in charge for three games at Spurs (2nd place, 6 points), including the UEFA Super Cup defeat to PSG, and prepared the team with a very different game plan for each game — all three resulting in strong, balanced performances from a side that lost 22 times (twice as many as they won), conceded 65 goals in 38 games and finished 17th last season. New midfielder Xavi Simons, who Spurs just signed from RB Leipzig for $69 million, won’t be available to make his debut but the 22-year-old is expected to be in attendance and unveiled to the home crowd before kickoff.

As for Bournemouth (9th, 3 points), Andoni Iraola’s new backline has its first clean sheet as a unit after they beat Wolves 1-0 last weekend — a stark improvement on the four goals they conceded to Liverpool in the opener. Dean Huijsen, Illia Zabarnyi and Milos Kerkez left for Real Madrid, PSG and Liverpool, respectively, for a combined $195 million this summer. Another player who was linked with numerous moves away this summer is Antoine Semenyo, but he remained at the club and has 2 goals, 1 assist after scoring twice against Liverpool and assisting Marcus Tavernier’s winner agains Wolves.
