Paul Merson makes bold Arsenal prediction for North London Derby against Tottenham

Paul Merson has explained why Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice's absence in the North London Derby is a "concern" for Arsenal.

The Gunners will face Spurs in the short trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday in their return to Premier League action.

Arsenal go into the game with seven points from their opening three fixtures but went into the break on the back of a draw with Brighton.

It was that stalemate with the Seagulls that saw Rice sent off after receiving two yellow cards.

The midfielder will now serve a one-game suspension in the Premier League, which happens to be the North London Derby.

Odegaard could also miss the game for Mikel Arteta's side, with the Arsenal club captain suffering an ankle injury while on international duty with Norway.

Merson has explained why he is concerned about the absence of Rice and Odegaard for Arsenal's chances of beating Spurs on Sunday, and has predicted a 1-1 draw. The former Gunners star has made a comparison to Manchester City and detailed why the next couple of weeks could be significant in the title race.

“I worry for Arsenal in the north London derby. No Declan Rice or Martin Odegaard is a huge concern," Merson told Sportskeeda.

"Like I mentioned earlier, Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne missed a lot of games last season but Manchester City were still able to win the league. Can Arsenal do the same with key players missing? Maybe not.

“I'll have to go with a draw here, but that's more in hope if I'm being honest. Tottenham have been unlucky, they could've been top of the league if they weren't naive at the back.

"The fact that Arsenal's two most influential players [Odegaard and Rice] are not playing adds to their advantage here.

"Arsenal have to get either two or four points from the next two fixtures against Tottenham and Manchester City. Three points from these games are not good enough and I'll tell you why.

"If Arsenal beat Spurs and lose to City, it's no good because City will then move further ahead. If they don't get a result against Spurs, they're not going to win at City either.

"This is a massive match for Arsenal. If City win this weekend and Arsenal draw, that's a four-point lead for the reigning champions.

"And then if City beat Arsenal, it becomes a seven-point lead. Now that would be a big problem for Arsenal.”

Arsenal handed major Premier League title verdict ahead of North London Derby vs Tottenham

Arsenal have been told they must win the North London Derby on Sunday or forget about winning the Premier League title.

The Gunners have come close to lifting the crown in each of the last two seasons, only to be pipped by Manchester City on both occasions. Mikel Arteta will be looking to challenge for the title once more this year, but they are at a pivotal moment in the season already.

Just three games into the new campaign, Arsenal are being told they must beat their north London rivals Tottenham or face another season without the title. That is the view of Graeme Souness, who thinks the North London Derby is a "must-win for both sides".

Arsenal are already two points off the pace at the top of the table after only drawing with Brighton & Hove Albion in the match before the international break. Declan Rice's first red card of his career played a big part in that, but more dropped points against Spurs on Sunday would see them fall further behind in the race for the title so early on in the season.

Speaking on William Hill's Three Up Front podcast, Souness said: "This North London Derby is a must-win for both Arsenal and Tottenham so early on this season. You can imagine if Arsenal were to lose, that’d be their hopes of winning the league over already."

Troy Deeney was also on the podcast, and he believes the injury and suspension concerns Arsenal have could hurt them. The Gunners are definitely without Rice and new signing Mikel Merino, with captain Martin Odegaard also ruled out by the Norway national team, if not by Arsenal just yet.

Deeney said: "Arsenal are without Declan Rice and Mikel Merino in midfield on Sunday, which is going to take a massive toll on their squad – this is a must-win game for them.

"Manchester City don’t look like they’re slowing down, they’re getting better and better. They’ve still got the likes of John Stones to add back into the team – their best players are still yet to come."

Tottenham have Martin Odegaard injury 'suspicions' as Mikel Arteta mulls over big change

Tottenham aren't reportedly convinced Martin Odegaard's injury is all that serious despite the Arsenal man being pictured on crutches a few days ago. The Gunners are staring down the barrel of a major midfield crisis heading into Sunday's North London Derby, with Odegaard, Mikel Merino and Declan Rice all expected to miss the titanic clash.

Rice, 25, is serving a one-match suspension after getting sent off during Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Brighton last month, while both Odegaard, 25, and Merino, 28, have picked up injuries. Merino, who joined from Real Sociedad in the summer, fractured his shoulder in his very first Arsenal training session and may have to wait at least two months to make his debut.

Odegaard, meanwhile, sustained an ankle injury during Norway's Nations League tie with Austria on Tuesday, with initial reports claiming the midfielder could miss around three weeks of action. Tottenham, however, aren't so sure that's true.

According to The Independent, there are some in the Spurs' camp who doubt the severity of Odegaard's injury, and think he'll be fit for Sunday's match. Suspicions were raised because Arsenal were slow to release details about the injury, despite the fact they would have had results from the scan as early as Wednesday.

Speaking ahead of the game, which takes place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mikel Arteta added fuel to the fire by refusing to rule Odegaard out of contention. "We need some more tests," he told reporters.

"Let's see what happens in the next day or so. He is super positive about everything. Martin wants to be there every single day."

If Odegaard does miss out, it could open the door for an unorthodox tactical approach. Arteta is well aware of the quality Spurs have in midfield, and it's understood he's considering a bold, new setup for the match if indeed he's left short in the centre of the park.

The plan the Spaniard is considering is one where Arsenal sit deep, soak up pressure, and then hit Tottenham with pace on the counter. In recent seasons, the Gunners have had around 56-60 per cent possession in most games, so allowing Spurs to have the lion's share of the ball would represent a significant philosophical change for the team.

As for Tottenham, both Dominic Solanke, who has missed the club's last two Premier League matches through injury, and Micky Van de Ven are expected to play. However, doubts remain over the availability of Yves Bissouma after he was forced off during Mali's win over Eswatini earlier this week.

"He [Bissouma] has got a bit of an issue, but we'll have a look at him over the next couple of days and see how it settles," Ange Postecoglou told SPURSPLAY. He also ruled Richarlison out of the game, insisting the Brazilian "still has a bit of work to do" to get back to full fitness.

A win for Tottenham would see them leapfrog Arsenal in the table. Spurs are currently 10th after winning just one of their first three league games.

The Gunners, who are fourth, are undefeated, with two wins and a draw from their opening three matches. Victory for them would see them keep pace with table-toppers Manchester City and Liverpool, both of whom have won three out of three so far.

Mikel Arteta guaranteed to be without five Arsenal stars for North London Derby vs Tottenham

Martin Odegaard is a doubt for Arsenal's trip to Tottenham on Sunday after suffering an ankle injury on international duty with Norway.

The Gunners captain limped off against Austria on Monday night and Mikel Arteta admitted on Friday that more tests need to be carried out before the club know the extent of the 25-year-old's injury ahead of the North London Derby. "We need some more tests. Let's see what happens in the next day or so," Arteta said.

"This afternoon probably. Let's see the extent of the injury and how quickly we can get him back. He's super positive about everything. Martin wants to be here every day, but we have to wait and see."

Odegaard's injury is a big blow to Arsenal as they are already without Declan Rice for the clash with Tottenham. The England international was sent off against Brighton before the international break, controversially being shown a second yellow card in the second half for kicking the ball away from Joel Veltman as the defender went to take a quick free kick. He must now serve a one-match suspension so although he will not be available to play against Tottenham, he will feature against Manchester City next week.

Mikel Merino is the third midfielder to be ruled out of the North London Derby, with the former Real Sociedad man nursing a shoulder injury sustained in his first ever training session with the Gunners. Arteta confirmed on August 30 that Merino will likely be out "for a few weeks" although further reports have claimed the Spaniard may not return until October.

There is better news regarding Gabriel Jesus, however, who has missed Arsenal's previous two games with a groin injury. "Gabi was out there," Arteta said. "He's got another session tomorrow and if everything goes well he'll be ready to be selected in the squad which is great news for us." Riccardo Calafiori is also expected to be fit despite returning to London early after picking up a slight niggle while playing for Italy. "He's another one where we'll have to wait another day or so," Arteta admitted.

Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney remain sidelined with knee and hamstring injuries respectively, although both are said to have made progress over the international break. Taking into consideration all of the above, it means Arteta is guaranteed to be without five senior players for the clash with Tottenham.

So, looking at the official Arsenal website, the Gunners have 17 fit senior players available for selection for the game at Tottenham. This does not include Ethan Nwaneri, who has been included in all three matchday squads already this season and could even be considered a possible Odegaard replacement.

As per Premier League rules, a club is allowed to name a squad of 20 players for a Premier League match which means a couple of academy stars will need to step up. Myles Lewis-Skelly has impressed in training and could again be called up to the senior matchday squad, while Salah-Eddine Oulad M'Hand was named on the bench against Brighton so it's possible he is again part of the first team group.

Possible Arsenal squad for Tottenham: Raya, Neto; White, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Kiwior, Calafiori, Zinchenko; Partey, Lewis-Skelly, Jorginho, Nwaneri, Oulad M'Hand, Havertz; Saka, Martinelli, Trossard, Sterling, Jesus.

Tottenham vs Arsenal North London Derby predicted

The North London Derby is always one of the most anticipated fixtures in the Premier League calendar. And the first one of the new 2024/25 season is upon us.

Tottenham play host to fierce rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, with both teams in need of the points, even at this early stage of the season. Arsenal have taken all three points away with them from their last two visits to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Spurs will be looking to stop the rot this time around.

Spurs go into the game with just four points from their opening three matches, although you could argue they should have maximum points, having dominated the first half against Leicester, only to draw 1-1, and dominating for large periods away at Newcastle but losing 2-1.

Arsenal have seven points from three matches and might well have had all nine had Declan Rice not been shown the first red card of his career against Brighton before the international break. He will miss the clash in N17, as will Martin Odegaard through injury.

So what can we expect from the big match in north London this weekend? Former Arsenal players Jermaine Pennant and Robert Pires are feeling confident.

Speaking to BonusCodeBets, Pennant said: "Doesn’t matter who’s in great form when it comes to these massive games that no one wants to lose. Form goes out of the window. They’re always tight at some point in the game but I expect Arsenal to win this game based on what I’ve seen.

“Spurs have been good so far and play an attractive brand of football. They should have won most of the games they’ve played this season but that’s Spurs for you. So I do expect Arsenal to win this game but you can never be sure playing at their ground."

The Tottenham team Postecoglou must pick vs Arsenal

It is a huge day in the capital on Sunday as the first North London Derby of the season takes place. Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham are the home side as Arsenal make the short trip across north London to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The sides did play out a high-scoring game the last time they met in N17, with Arsenal racing into a 3-0 half-time lead and managing to hold off a late Tottenham fightback to run out 3-2 winners. Postecoglou has yet to taste victory in a North London Derby clash and he will be determined to get off the mark in Sunday's 2pm kick-off.

Injury news has dominated talk ahead of the game and both teams look set to do without key players. But how exactly should Tottenham line up against the Gunners? Our football.london Tottenham reporters have had their say below.

Rob Guest - Football writer

Spurs have certainly been given some welcome news regarding Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke going into this weekend's North London Derby. However, it remains to be seen where exactly Yves Bissouma will be in terms of his fitness after coming off for Mali in midweek.

Starting at the back, a back four of Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Van de Ven and Destiny Udogie start in front of Guglielmo Vicario in goal. Van de Ven is a must in the Spurs backline but that in turn is bad news for Radu Dragusin, who delivered a strong display at Newcastle prior to the international break.

In midfield, Rodrigo Bentancur comes in for Bissouma and is handed the opportunity to follow up what was a strong showing at Leicester on the opening weekend of the new season. As well as Dejan Kulusevski has played in a central role for Tottenham this season, Pape Matar Sarr should be the one who gets the nod alongside Bentancur and James Maddison as the midfield trio may be too attacking if the Swede starts instead of his younger teammate.

Brennan Johnson deserves a start after a really good cameo off the bench at Newcastle. The winger will this time have Dominic Solanke leading the line and hopefully the frontman or Son Heung-min from the left can finish off the fantastic deliveries he put across the area.

Guest's team: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Sarr, Maddison; Johnson, Solanke, Son.

Lee Wilmot - Head of football

With the news that Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke should be fit to play in the North London Derby, there are some big decisions that need to be made in the starting XI. As ever the back line pretty much picks itself. Guglielmo Vicario will be in between the sticks behind Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Van de Ven and Destiny Udogie.

It's ahead of them where things get interesting. Who plays in the midfield three if Yves Bissouma is not fit to start? Does Ange Postecoglou go attacking, or hold back a touch, given the strength of the opposition?

Given Arsenal's struggles in midfield, I might be inclined to go attacking, particularly with three attacking players fully deserving of a start. So I'd plump with Pape Matar Sarr holding - if Bissouma is not fit - with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski in front of him.

Then in the front three, Brennan Johnson definitely deserves a start following his display against Newcastle, with Son Heung-min the other support act for central striker Dominic Solanke.

Wilmot's team: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Kulusevski, Maddison; Johnson, Solanke, Son.

I heard Arsenal chants at Tottenham training ground before 'intense' North London Derby

Ange Postecoglou heaped great praise on Arsenal ahead of the North London Derby. Tottenham Hotspur will host the Gunners at N17 on Sunday afternoon as both sides look to climb the Premier League table.

Just before the international break, the Lilywhites dropped to 10th after suffering a disappointing 2-1 defeat away to Newcastle United. As for the Gunners, they were, controversially, held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton at the Emirates Stadium, falling two points short of Manchester City and Liverpool in the title race.

While Tottenham have, so far, fallen short, Postecoglou identified this weekend's clash as a 'great opportunity' to build some momentum. So, with that being said, football.london has taken you behind the scenes at Hotspur Way ahead of the North London Derby.

Fans queuing up to meet their idols

Upon arriving at the club's training base in Enfield, there were crowds of supporters armed with shirts, marker pens and cameras, waiting to get a glimpse of their favourite players. Unsurprisingly, Son Heung-min appeared to be a fan favourite, with his name on the back of numerous jerseys.

'Arrrrrrsenal, Arrrrrrsenal' chants

As I made my way to the security office (the white building, as pictured below on the right) to check-in with a club official at the entrance, an Arsenal supporter took the chance to make his feelings known ahead of the North London Derby. As they drove past, they wound down their car window and shouted: "Arrrrrrsenal, Arrrrrrsenal."

Later, speaking to reporters, Postecoglou was asked to sum up the rivalry between Arsenal and Tottenham. The Spurs boss said: "This one you can tell that it's fairly intense between the two clubs. Obviously, geographically situated in the same part of town.

"They're trying to defend the same turf and there's always a little bit of an edge," added Postecoglou. "We know what it means to our supporters and what it means to the club. But like I said, for us, what is really important is we got to go out there and perform."

The proof is in the pudding

In May 2022, the Tottenham grounds team won the prestigious Premier League Grounds Team of the Season award for 2021/22 – and the proof is in the pudding. My goodness, the pitches at Hotspur Way are immaculate.

In an interview with the club website upon receiving the award, Tottenham's former head of playing surfaces and estates revealed what makes the training ground so special. Darren Baldwin said: "When we renovate pitches at Hotspur Way, we lose the grass, that goes off for composting, and we re-use all the sand in landscaping projects, environmentally-friendly practices that are a massive part of what we do.

"If we do it at Spurs, we do it properly, we lead on sustainability and I’m very proud of the Club and my team for making us as green as we possibly can be

Postecoglou makes Gold joke

In the absence of Alasdair Gold, Postecoglou took the chance to make a light-hearted joke about football.london's chief Tottenham reporter, which went down well in the Hotspur Way auditorium. When asked how difficult a decision it was to leave Djed Spence out of the Europa League 23-man squad, the Spurs boss gave a brilliant response.

"I'm disappointed," began Postecoglou. Ali's (Alasdair Gold) not here because this was his baby [laughs]! But, look, it was always going to be a difficult decision. Obviously with the makeup of our squad currently – you are always going to have to leave somebody out and Djed was the unfortunate one."

Ange clearly missed seeing his mate on Friday. Sorry!

Tottenham have seven North London Derby undroppables to unlock Ange Postecoglou's Arsenal game plan

Some seven Tottenham Hotspur players have already separated themselves from the rest despite head coach Ange Postecoglou not being able to name an unchanged starting lineup in either of their three Premier League games this season.

Injuries now appear to be easing in time for the North London Derby against Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. There is some doubt about whether Yves Bissouma will play, with Postecoglou acknowledging he has "a bit of an issue", but aside from Richarlison and Will Lankshear, who both remain out, there is as close to an entire squad to select from as there has been all season.

The international break does complicate matters, with some players only returning late on Thursday, but the match being on Sunday afternoon helps somewhat offset the effects of that long-haul travelling. Therefore, this weekend should help answer some selection questions still lingering at this early stage of the season.

Guglielmo Vicario is the definition of undroppable in this Spurs side, with Fraser Forster as their backup on the bench. The same is true of the back four, with Micky van de Ven set for a return alongside Cristian Romero, the only remaining outfield Tottenham player yet to miss a minute this season.

Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie are equally pivotal on the flanks, with Djed Spence yet to challenge either for a starting spot. In midfield, there remains more questions than answers, with only James Maddison establishing a place in central areas.

Tottenham have confirmed their Premier League squad for the first half of the 2024/25 season. Following last week's surprise news that Djed Spence had missed out on Spurs' squad for their upcoming Europa League campaign, the players who can feature for Tottenham in the Premier League over the next few months have been revealed.

The Lilywhites, as well as the other 19 clubs from the English top-flight, have been required to announce a 25-man group of players, as well as a list of registered Under-21s stars eligible for selection. No more than 17 overseas players are allowed in the 25-man squad, with the remaining eight spots going to those who qualify as a homegrown member.

As the rules do differ slightly between Premier League and UEFA competition when it comes to naming a 25-man squad, Ange Postecoglou and Spurs have been able to include youngsters such as Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert on the separate Under-21s list in the Premier League. The trio were not able to feature as Under-21s players in the Europa League as they have not spent the required two years at the club to qualify for the B list.

Spence was not the only player to miss out on Tottenham's Europa League squad last week as Sergio Reguilon, as expected, was also omitted with the club always needing to leave a couple of players out. The Spaniard, who still remains at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after failing to complete a transfer away from the club this summer, has been included in the team's 25-man squad for the first half of the 2024/25 Premier League term.

Here is Tottenham's Premier League squad for the first half of the season:

Every word Ange Postecoglou said on Tottenham ambitions, Solanke injury and Bentancur charge

Ange Postecoglou has insisted that Tottenham Hotspur have what it takes to challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title sooner rather than later. The Lilywhites boss was quizzed by the media at Hotspur Way on Friday afternoon ahead of this weekend's North London Derby.

Last season, the North London Derby proved to be quite the spectacle; the Lilywhites enjoyed a 2-2 draw against Mikel Arteta's side at the Emirates Stadium before suffering a 3-2 defeat on home turf. Despite the occasion, Son Heung-min still managed to leave his mark.

The Tottenham skipper fired three past Arsenal – and Postecoglou will be hoping for more of the same this weekend. So, with that being said, football.london transcribed every word Postecoglou said at Hotspur Way ahead of the North London Derby.

The team news is pretty positive...

Internationals all came back okay. Biss is the only one that's obviously got an issue. It's not serious but he's getting treatment today we'll see if he can train tomorrow and make a decision there. Out of the other guys, Micky van de Ven [is] all good.

He's trained fully through the international break and Dom [Solanke]; yeah, back half of this week, he joined the first team training. Today again. We've got training tomorrow. If he gets through okay, I guess he'll be available. Richy, Will Lankshear – they are the only two that are in rehab.

You addressed it earlier in the summer but Rodrigo Bentancur has now been charged by the FA, potential hefty ban. Can I just get your reaction to the charge please?

Yeah not unexpected from our perspective. It's something that we know the league would look at and we need to let the process sort of play out now. You know, Rodrigo's well aware of the ramifications of any outcome from from the panel, but we'll just wait and see what they come out with.

Special game Sunday. I was listening to you a few weeks ago talking about potential new cycles here and Mikel Arteta probably went through a similar one. Do you see similarities with what he's building there to what you're trying to do at Tottenham Hotpur?

It's hard to say because I guess every situation is kind of unique in itself because they're different clubs and I guess different environments but I've said before there's obviously a way to sort of build. A team and a club sort of go into certain direction and that always, for the most part, takes time.

It's about finding the right people in the key positions, and all those things are club decisions and as you go along I guess clubs decide whether they want to continue down that road or not. The results aren't always there immediately which is not surprising in this in this league but I think for for the most part clubs that have sort of stuck to a certain direction because they believe they're heading in in the right way. You eventually get to a place where the team is competitive for a sustained period of time.

They're considered Manchester City's title challengers, but I know you're ultra ambitious as well and there's a lot of [needle] between the clubs, you know, 'who finishes above who'. Do you think the current squad you've got now is capable of challenging Arsenal this season?

Well, not specifically Arsenal, but we want to be a club that can challenge everyone. That's what we're trying to aim to become and to do that you've got to perform at a certain level on a consistent basis. You've got to have a squad strong enough to do that, to withstand the challenges that inevitably come during a course of a season.

But, you know, we've started the season fairly solidly from a performance perspective. Obviously the results haven't reflected that but I think we're in a good place to really push on from last year and improve in all areas of our game. And if we do that, I mean we got close to challenging last year. There's no reason why we can't this year.

After what you've experienced in this huge fixture so far, in your time here, how would you try and sum up the rivalry in North London?

Every sort of derby involves a bit different. Obviously, this one you can tell that it's fairly intense between the two clubs. Obviously, geographically situated in the same part of town. They're trying to defend the same turf and there's always a little bit of an edge. I thought both games last year were very entertaining.

Thought we played well at their place and and really matched it with them and, you know, [we] could have even won on the day. Here, at our place, we got blown away in the first half. [We] tried to make game of it in the second half. So plenty of goals and it's exciting.

We know what it means to our supporters and what it means to the club, but like I said, for us, what is really important is we got to go out there and perform. We're going to play a football play well because irrespective of the rivalry they're a top side so you need to do that.

What kind of impact could a win have on the rest of Tottenham's season?

It's hard to say. I've never felt like there's an easy way to success. I don't think one win determines or can change your trajectory to a great effect, but it helps because it's not just a win in a big game in a derby but it's a win against one of the top sides so that gives you more belief and confidence and potentially could sort of inject some real momentum into into our season.

But, you know, I've never been one to think that you know just the win on the weekend is enough for us to say that we're on the right course and, alternatively, if things don't go our way that, we need to you know change course.

They will be without some big players, but what is it about this Arsenal side that makes them so hard to play against?

I think consistency and approach and mentality. I think you've seen them in the last two years in particular, they've just had a real relentlessness about them. They haven't had to change their team too much, there's a solid core there that have carried them through the last two years and I think that gives you belief over time.

So, I think in every game they feel like they can win. I think know they have this confidence in themselves now that they can challenge over a course of a Premier League season, which I think that more than anything else allows you to kind of build momentum season to season.

Their form over the last two years in total has been outstanding, so they're going to be a tough nut to crack but a great opportunity for us to do that.

Be it in Scotland when you were involved in a the big derby up there or this derby here, how do you manage the expectations of the fans while wanting to tell them, 'yeah we're going to go out there and on the front foot and we want to win this game' and do this, that, the other?

I'd hate to think that I went into any game trying to get people to manage expectations because ultimately what's the point of doing what we do. You go into every game hoping to conquer and win and play well and do all the things that that we love about the game so I don't think you should walk in to a stadium fearing anything or having trepidation about anything or scared to dream or hope that you can be successful.

So, I certainly, I've never done that in the past and I wouldn't do that because it's not the way I coach or live my life. It's not the mindset I have. I think every game you have is an opportunity to do something special and that's the how you should approach it.

These are special games. It's come very early in the season – that's not down to you, it's down to the fixture computer – but would you prefer to be more up and running and have maybe 10 to 15 games behind you before the first of these derby matches?

No, not really. I mean the league has started, you don't start a race and then think you're going to start sprinting after 10 metres. You got to go from the start mate you got to be ready. We were ready at the start of the season and whenever the games come along and you got to be ready for it. So, we're three games into a season. Obviously the international break kind of puts a pause on things but no whenever it comes we need to be ready.

Final one on Bentancur. How are things in the dressing room between him and Heung-min Son? And secondly, how do you tell footballers that in the real world you can't behave like this and therefore you have to your behaviour discipline while you're wearing the club badge or even while you're under the employment of the club? We saw how upset and angry you were a couple of weeks ago with Yves Bissouma.

In terms of Sonny and Rodri, I think they had their kind of discussion about the whole incident and I think both players understand and respect each other's position and Rodri's already apologised for what he said and Sonny has accepted that and accepted the fact that one of his teammates, a person he is close to, has made a mistake.

Beyond that, I don't know what you mean by the real world. We all live in the same world, whether you're a footballer or anyone down the street, we all live in the same world and we all kind of understand the ramifications of our actions irrespective of who we represent. Ultimately we represent ourselves as people and you try along the way as human beings we try to do the right thing all the time but it doesn't always happen and we all make mistakes.

I've said before for me it's not just about punishment, it's the opportunity for people to atone, to learn because if we're talking about having a society that's kind of understanding and tolerant of everything we also must show that to people who make mistakes, as Rodri has made this time.

We kind of know him very well and a lot better than most because we spend every day with him and we understand the kind of person he is and we understand that even though he's a great guy and a fantastic teammate, he's made a big error this time and he's got to take the punishment but also we need to make sure that we give him the opportunity to atone from it, learn from it and hopefully others learn from it as well.

You've had three good performances this season but the results haven't always married up. How close do you feel like the team are to clicking and putting in a real 90-minute performance, consistently?

It's hard to say but I just feel I've always felt that if you're consistent in those you know sort of underlying things we're looking for in our game that the results do come sooner rather than later and we just got to stay really disciplined and consistent in our approach from our football because I think our football has been really good in all three games.

We've dominated all three games. We've limited the opposition to very little and created a lot for ourselves. We've played in the manner we wanted to, but the results haven't come. But, if we maintain that, over 38 games I think we'll be in a really good position. But, yeah, [it] doesn't guarantee it. You can't just sort of expect it to happen or pick a moment when it's going to happen, you've just got to keep keep at it. Like I said, stay really focused on the important elements of our game and the results will follow.

It feels like a while ago now but you had to select the Europa League 23-man squad. Djed Spence was left out. How difficult a decision was that and and how has he kind of taken that news?

I'm disappointed. Ali's [football.london's chief Tottenham Hotspur reporter Alasdair Gold] not here because this was his baby! But, look, it was always going to be a difficult decision. Obviously with the makeup of our squad currently – you are always going to have to leave somebody out and Djed was the unfortunate one.

But at the same time, Djed's already played in the Premier League and, if you asked him at the start of the year where he sees himself, I think the fact that he's part of our squad and will obviously play a huge part in our year because he has already. I don't think you should take too much disappointment. Obviously everyone wants to play, but in the end it was about team B for us and we just feel that with the squad we've got, we've got some cover on the right side.

[We] got some players you can cover on the left side. I always tend togo for more attacking players in those kind of scenarios, so Djed misses out, but, as I said, he's already played in you know a couple of games in the Premier League. There will be plenty of football for him if he keeps going like he is.

With this rivalry, obviously you experienced the two matches last year. I wondered, did you learn more in those two matches or maybe more in that Man City game back in May when obviously there was conflicting emotions with with the fan base?

No. Look, I don't think I learned anything that I didn't already know. I understand the rivalry. I understand the passion that exists. In terms of these games, I totally understand that the Man City game – I have to win mate. That's never going to change with me. I don't care who I'm representing, I will never go into a game not wanting to win. I'm just not built that way and I don't care if that's at odds with other people. I understand that, I respect that, but they need to respect me as well. I will try and win every game I play.
