Tottenham best and worst case transfer scenarios

Transfer deadline day is finally here! Tottenham fans will be keeping a very close eye on today's events with the club having until 11pm this evening to finalise any remaining transfer business.

Not only that, the Lilywhites will discover their Europa League league phase opponents when the draw is made at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco at midday. There's even more Tottenham-related business on the agenda as Ange Postecoglou is due to speak to the media at 1pm to preview this weekend's game against Newcastle United and no doubt also answer a few questions on the transfer front, too.

In regards to potential transfer business taking place in N17 over the course of the day, what exactly are the best and worst case scenarios facing Tottenham ahead of the transfer deadline? football.london takes a look below.

Best case

Tottenham fans would love nothing more than to see another transfer incoming before the day is out. Looking well stocked in a number of positions, Spurs do look a tad light when it comes to centre-back.

Postecoglou currently has Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin as his options at the heart of defence, with left-back Ben Davies also able to play there if required. An injury or suspension for one of the quartet and Tottenham are rather short in that area of the pitch.

Given the need to also bring in a Destiny Udogie alternative at left-back, if Spurs can sign a left-sided defender who can play at centre-back and left-back, just like Van de Ven can do, then it would be a very good piece of business for the football club. Another goalkeeper with similar attributes to Guglielmo Vicario would also suffice ahead of the 11pm deadline, especially as Spurs may be in a rather precarious position if the Italian is ever missing.

Fraser Forster is a very good deputy goalkeeper but he is a different type of goalkeeper to Vicario, while both Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman have extremely limited first-team experience. Elsewhere, securing permanent transfers for Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon would also be a major transfer win.

Due to the fact that both are in the final year of their contract, Spurs are in a rather tricky position where clubs aren't perhaps going to offer their true market value and will instead try to sign the players for reduced fees. If Tottenham can part with both permanently and subsequently bring in a good amount of money then it will be a very successful window in terms of outgoings.

Real Betis are very keen on luring Lo Celso back to the club and the hope will be that the Spanish side match or at least get near Tottenham's valuation of the midfielder.

A loan move to Championship for Alfie Devine would also be a good end to the final day of the summer market. The attacking midfielder needs to get a move where he can play regularly in order to add to his experience as Postecoglou rates him very highly.

Worst case

The worst case scenario is that Tottenham don't add to their squad before the 11pm deadline. However, the club have already made some smart moves in the transfer market and it would not be the worst thing in the world if they don't bring in another signing after finally getting the striker they desperately wanted and also concluding deals for some highly-rated youngsters.

What would be a poor end to the transfer window, though, is that they don't manage to sell both Lo Celso and Reguilon permanently. Due to the contract status of both players with their deals expiring in 2025, Tottenham are not in a position where they can loan either out and they really have to strike permanent moves.

Lo Celso and Reguilon staying beyond the summer deadline would be a nightmare for Tottenham as interested clubs from abroad would be able to talk to them from January about a pre-contract agreement. If they were to eventually move on in January, Spurs would only bring in a severely reduced fee due to the fact that both would be in the final six months of their contract.

It would also be a big missed opportunity if Devine doesn't head out on loan. The attacking midfielder could of course stay for the first part of the season and depart on a temporary basis in January but there is no guarantee that he will get any minutes at Tottenham.

Opportunities in the Spurs team could be there in the Europa League depending on the draw, with the same going for the Carabao Cup. A loan move for Devine is best for all parties as things stand.

Tottenham best and worst case Europa League draw

Description

Tottenham will be hoping for a kind set of fixtures when the draw for the Europa League takes place at midday on Friday. Fresh from the Champions League draw at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Thursday evening, it is now the turn of both the Europa League and Europa Conference League.

Tottenham will be playing in UEFA's second club competition in 2024/25 after finishing fifth in last season's Premier League table. Ange Postecoglou's men will be one of the favourites to get their hands on the trophy in Bilbao next May but they may have to navigate a very tricky league phase.

From this season onwards, UEFA's club competitions will be operating with a new format rather than going with the traditional group phase. Clubs will instead take part in a 36-team league phase and they will play a total of eight games, comprising of four home fixtures and four away fixtures, as they are paired against two teams from each of the four pots.

Clubs cannot come up against a team from the same country and they can only be drawn against a maximum of two teams from the same nation. A number of big teams will be taking part in this season's Europa League, including Manchester United, Ajax, Roma, Lazio and Porto. The four pots for today's draw are as follows:

Pot 1: Roma (ITA), Manchester United (ENG), Porto (POR), Ajax (NED), Rangers (SCO), Frankfurt (GER), Lazio (ITA), Tottenham (ENG), Slavia Prague (CZE).

Pot 2: Real Sociedad (ESP), AZ Alkmaar (NED), Braga (POR), Olympiacos (GRE), Lyon (FRA), PAOK (GRE), Fenerbahce (TUR), M. Tel-Aviv (ISR), Ferencvaros (HUN).

Pot 3: Qarabag (AZE), Galatasaray (TUR), Viktoria Plzen (CZE), Bodø/Glimt (NOR) , Union SG (BEL), Dynamo Kyiv (UKR), Ludogorets (BUL), Midtjylland (DEN), Malmo (SWE).

Pot 4: Athletic Club (ESP), Hoffenheim (GER), Nice (FRA), Anderlecht (BEL), Twente (NED), Besiktas (TUR), FCSB (ROU), RFS (LVA), Elfsborg (SWE).

So what exactly are the best and worst case scenarios facing Tottenham in the league phase? football.london takes a look below.

Best case

With teams such as Roma, Manchester United, Porto, Lazio and Eintracht Frankfurt in Pot 1, clubs in the top pot will no doubt be looking at Slavia Prague as a favourable opponent. Rangers are perhaps the other team you would want to draw from Pot 1, although an away tie at Ibrox could be very tricky indeed for whoever is paired against them given the atmosphere that can be generated inside their famous stadium.

In Pot 2, PAOK and Ferencvaros are possibly the teams to face, thus avoiding Real Sociedad, Fenerbahce, Braga and Lyon in the process. Ludogorets would be a decent draw from Pot 3 as the Lilywhites recorded resounding 4-0 and 3-1 victories over the Bulgarian side when they last met in the competition during the 2020/21 season.

Malmo would also be a kind draw from the same pot, with Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski potentially heading back to their homeland if they are paired away against the Swedish side. There could also be another trip back to Sweden with Elfsborg in the final pot, with RFS of Latvia also looking a good tie from Pot 4.

Best draw: Slavia Prague, Rangers, PAOK, Ferencvaros, Ludogorets, Malmo, Elfsborg, RFS.

Worst case

Tottenham could potentially get an incredibly tough set of fixtures if the draw goes against them. Starting in Pot 1, a tie against Roma would be extremely difficult especially if it is to be played in the Italian capital.

Porto have a good pedigree in Europe and they will not be easy opponents, with the Portuguese side currently three wins from three in the league this season and not conceding a goal in the process.

Real Sociedad are a very good team in Pot 2 and Tottenham will want to avoid Fenerbahce at all costs. The Turkish side are now managed by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho and a game in Istanbul in front of a fervent fanbase could prove to be quite the challenge.

Another game against Turkish opponents could possibly be on the cards in Pot 3 with Galatasaray in there. An away trip to Qarabag would also not really be ideal due to the travelling time it would take to get to Azerbaijan and back.

Finally, Athletic Club look an extremely strong opponent from Pot 4, which also contains the likes of Nice and Hoffenheim. If Tottenham are drawn against the French side then it would see a reunion with former player Tanguy Ndombele after his move to the south of France this summer.

Worst draw: Roma, Porto, Real Sociedad, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Qarabag, Athletic Club, Nice.

Tottenham transfer deadline day state of play

Description

The long summer transfer window finally closes on Friday evening and Tottenham Hotspur must squeeze in any final business before 11pm.

It is already a busy day for Ange Postecoglou and the club with the Europa League group stage draw swiftly followed by the Australian's press conference at Spurs' Hotspur Way training ground ahead of the Premier League trip to Newcastle.

The Tottenham boss will likely explain whether any further incoming transfers are expected to complete a packed transfer window which has seen Dominic Solanke come to N17 for £65million, Wilson Odobert arrive for £30million, Archie Gray in a £40million package, as well as more wingers in the returning Timo Werner and a January arrival to come in 2025 in Yang Min-hyeok, while Lucas Bergvall joined up after his February switch from Djurgarden.

Spurs have also been working away on a huge overhaul of Postecoglou's squad with Oliver Skipp, Emerson Royal, Joe Rodon, Eric Dier, Ryan Sessegnon, Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Ivan Perisic, Japhet Tanganga, Troy Parrott, Bryan Gil, Alejo Veliz, Ashley Phillips, Manor Solomon and Dane Scarlett all leaving the club this summer either permanently or temporarily, with Sergio Reguilon, Giovani Lo Celso and Alfie Devine expected to join them on Friday.

So what exactly could still happen on transfer deadline day? Here's a look at all of the departments in Postecoglou's squad.

Goalkeepers

Postecoglou has got a clear number one in Guglielmo Vicario, with Fraser Forster and Brandon Austin battling for the number two spot and Alfie Whiteman as another back-up.

There's some debate though over whether those back-ups fit Postecoglou's system well and whether Postecoglou would entirely be at ease with them coming in for a prolonged period. Forster has returned after half a year out with a fractured foot and at 36, can he mop up behind the defence with the pace required and use his feet as Vicario does? Austin and Whiteman are both 25-years-old but neither have played a single minute of competitive football in the English game.

It might be fixed in a later window, but Postecoglou could well look for someone new to challenge Vicario for the years ahead.

With young Luca Gunter also impressing and earning himself a five-year, there could be an opportunity for Whiteman to depart if a move arises.

Republic of Ireland U21 international Josh Keeley is expected to get a loan move, with football.london having reported that Leyton Orient are keen on him to join his academy team-mate Jamie Donley in their ranks.

The other issue in the goalkeeper department is that Austin and Whiteman are Spurs' only two senior first team club-trained players for Europa League football this season and with the club's troublesome numbers across the squad Postecoglou will have to decide whether he can afford to leave Forster, his only experienced back-up to Vicario, out. If he doesn't then someone else in another position misses out.

Full-backs

Djed Spence has shaken up this department with the 23-year-old impressing Postecoglou and his coaches with his displays in training and matches since coming back into the fold. His resurgence means Spurs now have three options at right-back in Pedro Porro, Spence and Archie Gray.

Postecoglou has also used Spence as a back-up left-back to Destiny Udogie and on Sunday, the Spurs boss brought on Spence in the position late on rather than turning to the experienced Ben Davies, which suggests he sees the Welshman as centre-back cover this season.

Left-back Sergio Reguilon is set to leave the club if an exit route is found. The Spaniard has only one year left on his contract which makes a loan move difficult.

Spence is not a natural left-back and he was exposed at times by Bayern's admittedly top drawer wingers in pre-season and the Tottenham boss might decide that he needs another late addition in this area.

Centre-backs

On paper Tottenham appear to be a similar to last year after Davinson Sanchez left in that they have three senior natural centre-backs in Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin, albeit three better fitting defenders for the Postecoglou system,

Towards the end of last season Postecoglou did identify that department as being one in need of a new recruit. However, last Friday he was asked directly if he was likely to look to sign another centre-back this coming week after Ashley Phillips was loaned out to Stoke.

"No, look we've obviously got Radu [Dragusin], who is going really well and training really well. Ben can play centre-back as well and Archie can play centre-back so I think we're OK," he said.

That pool of three natural centre-backs could be stretched to breaking point when the schedule starts to bring three matches a week from next month. Gray can play in the centre and at right-back but Postecoglou will likely want him to play and develop in the midfield this season.

It perhaps opens a door for academy centre-back Alfie Dorrington who is now back in training following his serious hamstring injury.

It's a position that the Australian has ruled out additions in but Tottenham have a lot of games to tackle this season with just three senior centre-backs.

If there's going to be a deadline day signing then it feels like this department makes the most sense to add to, albeit keeping in mind that a new signing means a second player needing to be left out of the Europa League squad.

Central midfielders

This is now a packed area of the squad. More experience could certainly be added but in terms of numbers and talent there's a lot of it.

In the number six role, Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Archie Gray are all the main candidates for the position. A new powerful number six would still be an enticing addition but that would likely mean a big exit to make the room for such a signing.

In the two number eight roles either side of the midfield trio there are also plenty of candidates for Postecoglou in James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr, Bentancur, Gray, Bergvall, Dejan Kulusevski and Odobert can also play in that position, so that's seven players battling it out for two positions.

You never know what opportunities can arise in the transfer market on the final day and someone on Tottenham's wanted list could become available but it would certainly have a big knock-on effect within the squad.

With outgoings, Giovani Lo Celso will be heading towards the exit door, although he's in the same contract situation as Reguilon which gives interested clubs the upper hand, while young midfielder Alfie Devine is also expected to make his way back out on loan this season. Academy midfielder Tyrese Hall is also available for loan to clubs at League One level with Tottenham keen to increase his experience of senior football.

Attackers

Postecoglou now has two strikers to choose from, and occasionally play together, in Solanke and Richarlison with Son Heung-min able to play there very competently and Kulusevski proving a fine false nine when required.

There is also the prolific 19-year-old Will Lankshear who is set to remain at the club and get minutes this season despite the queue of clubs looking to take the teenager away on loan. His performances in training and games this summer helped convince Postecoglou to allow Scarlett and Veliz to head out on loan.

The Spurs boss also now has a huge number of wingers to fit into two positions, meaning some are more than likely to be watching some matches from the stands at times this season when Postecoglou has a fit squad to choose from - yes we know that's a rarity.

On the left wing, Postecoglou has Son, Odobert, Werner, Johnson, Richarlison and the gifted 17-year-old Mikey Moore who can all play there. On the right, he has all of the above as well as Kulusevski, showing the versatility of the squad the Tottenham head coach has constructed over the past 12 months.

On top of all of that there is also Yang, who has been handed his first senior Korean international call-up, to arrive in January from Gangwon.

Solomon has now joined Leeds United on loan for the season and other attackers will become available or be pushed towards Tottenham in the final days, but there's not any room at the inn unless it simply has to be made for someone remarkable.

A competition Tottenham will be expected to go far in, Ange Postecoglou's side will have to be at their very best during the league phase with some incredibly tough ties potentially on the cards. Matchday 1 in the Europa League will be played over two days on September 25 and 26, before the league phase draws to a conclusion on January 30.

Five transfers Tottenham could complete on deadline day as Ange Postecoglou eyes Man City target

Description

Tottenham Hotspur could complete five more deals before the transfer window slams shut. The Lilywhites have forked out almost £150m this summer, welcoming some exciting players to north London.

After missing out on Champions League qualification two years in a row, Daniel Levy will be hoping Ange Postecoglou can secure top four this season. Spurs got off to a shaky start on the opening weekend of the new campaign, with a 1-1 draw against Leicester City, before storming past Everton on home soil.

With Postecoglou eager to take Tottenham to the next level, the Australian may be keen to further bolster his squad before the transfer window slams shut at 23:00 BST. So, with that being said, football.london have looked at what deals Tottenham could wrap up on Friday.

IN – Eberechi Eze

Eze has been heavily linked with an exit from Crystal Palace for some time following his impressive performances for club and country. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder, who sees his contract at Selhurst Park expire in June 2027, featured 27 times in the Premier League last season, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists.

He caught Gareth Southgate's eye and earned a place in the England squad at Euro 2024. Both Manchester City and Spurs have been mooted as potential destinations for Eze this summer, but he currently looks set to stay in south London.

OUT – Giovanni Lo Celso

Lo Celso has struggled to force himself into Postecoglou's plans, casting doubt over his future at Tottenham. According to Fabrizio Romano, Real Betis are pushing to re-sign the 28-year-old midfielder, who's recently entered the final year of his contract at Hotspur Way.

The report states that the La Liga outfit have identified Lo Celso as a replacement for Nabil Fekir. Unfortunately, Lo Celso hasn't quite lived up to expectations following his permanent transfer from Real Betis in July 2020.

OUT – Sergio Reguilon

Reguilon also looks set to leave Tottenham on Friday. The 27-year-old defender, who also has just one year remaining on his contract, spent last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford, featuring 25 times in the Premier League.

OUT – Alfie Devine

Devine will be hoping to find a season-long loan in search of regular first-team football. The 20-year-old midfielder began last season on loan at Port Vale in League One before joining Plymouth Argyle in the Championship in January.

OUT – George Abbott

Abbott will also be keen to find a suitor before the summer transfer window slams shut. football.london understands that the 19-year-old defender is set to join Notts County on loan.

Since making his Premier League debut for Spurs in a very brief cameo off the bench back in May 2023, he's not had the chance to impress in the first-team. A move to the League Two side will allow Abbott to finally get senior minutes under his belt.

Three players to leave, Championship star could sign

It could be a very busy deadline day in the Premier League. The summer transfer window closes at 11pm tonight, with plenty of business still to be done.

At Tottenham, Johan Lange and Ange Postecoglou have already been pretty busy. Lucas Bergvall signed in February, joining the club this summer, with Timo Werner's loan from RB Leipzig extended for another season too.

Then Spurs splashed out the cash on Archie Gray, Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert, while Yang Min-hyeok also signed this summer, although he will arrive in January.

A number of players have also left Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, making it a massive overhaul in N17 this summer. But there could yet be more incomings and outgoings on transfer deadline day.

Spurs could be in the market for another centre-back, while it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they look to bring in a goalkeeper late in the day either.

football.london writers have their say on what they think could happen on what is one of the craziest days in the footballing calendar.

Lee Wilmot

Spurs have, as stated above, already done a good deal of business this summer. But that is not to say they will not do anything on deadline day.

It will more than likely be outgoing transfers making the headlines today. Sergio Reguilon was left out of the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea to explore other opportunities. Those opportunities have yet to emerge.

Giovani Lo Celso needs to leave since he is not in Ange Postecoglou's plans for the season. It tells you everything you need to know that neither have been pictured in the new 2024/25 kit for the squad profiles on the club's official website.

I think Spurs have done such good work in trimming their squad this summer, that things will not go completely according to plan on deadline day. Postecoglou would like both to leave, but it's gone so long, I don't think they will. One will depart, with the other left at the club for another four months at least.

I think there might well be one more incoming player too. A versatile young defender, who can play at centre-back or at full-back - perhaps from the Championship - might present himself late in the day as an opportunity Postecoglou just cannot turn down.

Alasdair Gold

Plenty of focus will be in getting Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso out the door before that clock ticks to 11pm and with every passing hour so Spurs' position on the duo, who have a year left on their contracts, grows weaker.

Alfie Devine needs a loan move to continue his development and decisions will be made on a couple of other academy players such as Tyrese Hall and whether they could benefit from a loan spell.

When it comes to incomings, it's all about whether players on Tottenham's wanted list suddenly become available as the pieces move around them on the board in the final hours. Postecoglou has not ruled out another signing, although further additions will require some eye-catching decisions to be made with the club's Europa League squad for the group stages.

I still think Spurs need another defender and I wouldn't be surprised if they bring one in despite the Australian's insistence that they won't.

Rob Guest

Tottenham fans will be desperate for incomings on transfer deadline day but it will be mainly about players heading out of the door at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs need to part with both Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon on a permanent basis with limited time left in the window.

I think Lo Celso will get his move but Reguilon will either go right before the deadline or seal a transfer over the coming days with countries such as Turkey having their summer window open for slightly longer. Alfie Devine requires a loan move and the hope will be that there is a good one waiting for him in the Championship and the same could potentially happen for Tyrese Hall.

In terms of incomings, I think Spurs will be very quiet unless a really good opportunity comes up in the final few hours. Tottenham did spring a major surprise with the Wilson Odobert announcement so you cannot rule them out doing something very similar for a young centre-back who can also play as a left-back.

Joe Doyle

There are obviously a few things Spurs have to sort out before the deadline, but I can't see many players coming into the club.

While there is arguably a need for a centre-back to add depth, I think it's a bit of an expensive move to leave so late in the window. Unless there's a real surprise, I don't see there being a serious new incoming deal.

Instead, I think Spurs will have to focus on moving players out. Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon are the obvious targets for moves, but I think it could end up being loan deals again for both of them.

I think there will be a loan for Alfie Devine, and also a few for some of Spurs' less well-known academy players. But in reality, the major business has all been done and it should be a relatively quiet deadline day - a sign of a club working well.

Sam Truelove

Tottenham need to prioritise getting rid of some of the fringe players within the squad. Sergio Reguilon clearly does not have a future at Spurs while Giovani Lo Celso is another who should be moved on. Finding willing buyers is proving to be an issue, however, but I'm predicting Reguilon to move to another Premier League side.

I also wouldn't rule out a Djed Spence exit. The right-back has come off the bench in each of Tottenham's two Premier League games so far this season but will still struggle for consistent minutes with Pedro Porro ahead of him, so if a club comes in for the 24-year-old a deal could make financial sense.

Incomings wise, I'm not sure there will be much business conducted at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on deadline day. A lot has been made about the need for a new centre-back but Daniel Levy may think Postecoglou can manage with what he has until January at least.

The final day of the summer transfer window is just around the corner as clubs look to complete deals before the 11pm deadline on August 30.

Any late moves from Tottenham will see them add to the incomings of Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert, Lucas Bergvall, Min-hyeok Yang and Timo Werner. A host of players continue to be linked with a move to north London, but there could also be more outgoings.

Deadline day can be a hectic time for supporters, as clubs sometimes try to pull off last-minute deals. Rumours are continuing to swirl that Spurs could still make more signings before the window closes.

Earlier this summer, Ange Postecoglou admitted there will be 'more activity.' With that said, we've had a look at the latest odds as to who or if anybody could become Postecoglou's latest signing.

The Tottenham team Postecoglou must select at Newcastle

Tottenham take on Newcastle United on Sunday looking to put previous Premier League horror show performances at St James Park behind them.

Spurs go into the game off the back of a dominant 4-0 win against Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the match will be played after the transfer window has come to a close with Ange Postecoglou knowing what his squad will look like for the first half of the season.

We asked our Tottenham reporters Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest to name the starting XI they would like to see face Newcastle in the Premier League this weekend. Here's what they came up with:

Alasdair Gold - Tottenham Hotspur correspondent

Postecoglou has a few key decisions to make with his team selection in most parts of the pitch. First off he should now know if Micky van de Ven is completely fine after the nasty looking hyperextending moment with his knee in the first half against Everton. The young Dutchman played on and said he was fine after the game but also admitted that he would need to check on it in the days after.

Postecoglou must decide whether to throw Rodrigo Bentancur straight back into the midfield after his head injury absence or hand Yves Bissouma another start after his impressive display and first goal for the club against Everton.

The Tottenham boss must also decide whether Dejan Kulusevski continues in a deeper midfield role after another eye-catching display this summer or whether he needs Pape Matar Sarr's mobility in a more balanced trio in the centre of the pitch away from home. Wilson Odobert also had an exciting debut, albeit without the final ball in his play which will come as he gets to know his team-mates.

Up front, Richarlison will have had another eight days to be ready to start a Premier League match so could come in as Postecoglou will not take any chances with Dominic Solanke if he's not 100% ready to start or even feature. The Brazilian or Englishman will also give Spurs more aerial help from set pieces at St James Park at both ends of the pitch if they feature.

Gold's XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Kulusevski, Bissouma, Maddison; Odobert, Richarlison, Son.

Rob Guest - Football writer

Postecoglou has some huge calls to make in regards to his Tottenham team to take on Newcastle United on Sunday. Rodrigo Bentancur's return gives the boss a decision to make over whether the Uruguayan or Yves Bissouma starts in the No.6 role, with Pape Matar Sarr then a contender to come in and give Spurs more energy in the middle of the park against a strong Newcastle team.

That in turn would see one of the attack-minded duo of Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison miss out in midfield despite performing so well in the win over Everton. Richarlison could then come into the frontline unless Dominic Solanke is fully fit and able to start after his absence last weekend.

Brennan Johnson is perhaps the player most at risk of missing out on the team in that scenario, thus seeing Wilson Odobert or Kulusevski move to the right wing as Son Heung-min goes to his natural left side.

Guest's XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Sarr, Maddison; Kulusevski, Richarlison, Son.

Tottenham will be looking to follow up last Saturday's 4-0 win over Everton by collecting another three points when they travel to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon. Visits to St James' Park haven't been too kind to Spurs in recent seasons, with the team falling to 6-1 and 4-0 defeats on their last two trips to the north east.

Both teams head into this weekend in the Premier League's top six after recording one win and one draw from their opening two fixtures. Newcastle's four points have come from a home win over Southampton on the opening day and a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth last Sunday.

So how exactly will Tottenham line up on Tyneside? Does Ange Postecoglou stick with the same team that hit Everton for four or does he make a few changes here and there? football.london takes a look at possible alterations below.

Radu Dragusin for Micky van de Ven

Radu Dragusin coming into the Tottenham team will all depend on Micky van de Ven's fitness. The Dutchman sustained what looked to be a nasty knee issue against Everton but he was able to carry on in the second half and played a key role in the win with an assist for the final goal of the contest.

Spurs will no doubt have checked on Van de Ven since returning for Tottenham training this week and some supporters noted that the ex-Wolfsburg man wasn't spotted in the latest training video released by the club. As ever, Postecoglou will provide the latest on the injury front when he speaks to the media at 1pm on Friday.

Rodrigo Bentancur for Yves Bissouma

Rodrigo Bentancur unfortunately missed out against Everton due to the head injury he sustained in the previous game against Leicester. The Uruguayan will now be pushing for a return to the team and it leaves Postecoglou with a big decision to make over whether it is Bentancur or Yves Bissouma who starts as the No.6.

Bentancur did catch the eye at the King Power Stadium with an impressive display but Bissouma then scored and wowed on his return to the team against Everton. It really is a tough call for the head coach to make.

Pape Matar Sarr for Dejan Kulusevski/James Maddison

Postecoglou went with a very attack-minded midfield against Everton as Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison joined Bissouma in the middle of the park. It remains to be seen if the 59-year-old will do likewise again for the trip to Newcastle United.

The inclusion of Pape Matar Sarr could be something he looks at as the Senegal international will bring plenty of energy to midfield against a strong Newcastle side. If that is indeed the case, one of Kulusevski or Maddison will have to drop out despite playing so well in the Everton match.

Dominic Solanke/Richarlison for Brennan Johnson/Wilson Odobert

All connected with Tottenham will be hoping for positive news regarding Dominic Solanke for this weekend's game after he was forced to watch on from the sidelines against Everton. The new signing sustained an ankle injury against Leicester but Postecoglou mentioned last Friday that the striker "has still got a chance for the Newcastle game".

If Solanke is missing, Richarlison could be the man to come in up front. However, as was the case with Van de Ven, Spurs fans noticed that the Brazilian was absent from the club's latest training video.

If Solanke or Richarlison is to start at St James' Park, one of Wilson Odobert or Brennan Johnson will miss out on the starting XI. Johnson would perhaps be the player most at risk after Odobert's impressive debut last weekend.

Due to the Frenchman's versatility, the new arrival could move across to the right in order to accommodate Son Heung-min on the left and either Solanke or Richarlison through the middle.

Tottenham to seal talented youngster transfer as major overhaul continues after academy success

Tottenham under-21s captain George Abbott is set to complete a loan move to League Two side Notts County, football.london understands, and that is a sign of the progress and change within the club's academy.

The versatile Abbott, who turned 19 this month and made his Premier League debut in May 2023, is set to seal a loan move to the Magpies after an impressive season for the U21s. The teenager has had a big year of development and appeared for Spurs' first team during pre-season this summer and can play across the midfield and defence.

He led Tottenham's U21s to the double of the Premier League 2 title and play-off trophy. That success for the top age group in the academy is going to be near impossible to replicate this time around as the U21s have become 'victims' - if that's the right word here - of their own success.

The easy thing would have been to keep the skipper Abbott as part of the U21s to bolster their numbers but instead only a handful of players from the core of Wayne Burnett's title-winning side that lifted that play-off trophy in May will still be playing in a Spurs shirt by the end of Thursday and that number could shrink further by end of Friday's transfer deadline day.

Many of the senior U21s players have moved on. Jude Soonsup-Bell, 20, has joined La Liga 2 side Cordoba on a permanent deal and will likely come up against 21-year-old winger Yago Santiago, who has left Tottenham for Elche. Another 21-year-old in midfielder Nile John has now moved to Portuguese second tier side Feirense permanently, while Charlie Sayers, a 19-year-old defender who appeared 11 times for the side around injury, has left for Scottish Championship side Partick Thistle.

Then there are the loan moves which have taken the heart out of Burnett's side. Jamie Donley, the team's talented creative hub, has joined League One side Leyton Orient after a strong summer with the first team having played four times for Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League and FA Cup. The skipper Abbott is heading to Notts County while Matthew Craig, who played eight times for the U21s last season before his loan to Doncaster Rovers, has gone back out on loan to League One Barnsley.

Prolific striker Will Lankshear's success last season with 32 goals for the U21s led to him getting a chance with Postecoglou in the summer and the 19-year-old forward grabbed it with both hands, scoring a couple of goals during pre-season and impressing the coaching staff. He was being selected ahead of both Dane Scarlett and Alejo Veliz, who have both since gone out on loan.

Lankshear, who currently has a minor hamstring injury from which he will return after the international break, is expected to remain part of Postecoglou's first team squad this season and will only occasionally play for the U21s to keep himself sharp, depending on his first team workload.

The same goes for 17-year-old Mikey Moore, who starred during pre-season for the first team and will be part of Postecoglou's set-up this season while playing the odd U21s game as he and Lankshear did in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy last week, both of them scoring against Bristol Rovers with Moore also grabbing two assists in a dominant display.

Republic of Ireland U21s goalkeeper Josh Keeley is looking for more senior minutes after his loan at Barnet last season, with Orient currently the main interested club in taking him into the Football League.

football.london understands that midfielder Tyrese Hall, who turns 19 on Wednesday, is available for loan before the summer transfer deadline on Friday should the right club come along with a guarantee of minutes, with the preference from Spurs understood to be League One and upwards.

The teenager broke into the U21s midway through last season and then Postecoglou's first team set-up as injuries hit Tottenham again later in the campaign and he was named on the bench for the Premier League game against Manchester City in May.

Hall got some early pre-season minutes with the first team and was taken on the tour to Japan and South Korea but without featuring. The youngster has started this season well for the U21s with two goals against Chelsea among three 90-minute performances. If the right loan move materialises to boost Hall's development then it will be taken, but if not he will continue to be a main player for the U21s and his situation looked at again in January.

For Tottenham, while the U21s will have a far tougher season ahead this time around, to have players either involved in the first team, going out on loans to play regularly in the Football League or heading off to senior challenges in their careers in the professional game is what development in the academy is all about.

The experienced Burnett will be used to the ever-changing nature of academy results versus development and how difficult it is to marry the two. In the 2022/23 season, with an injury-hit young squad and despite a great run of form in the second half of the campaign, Tottenham's U21s were relegated from Premier League 2 only for a change in league format to place them back into it.

With those injured players back and the younger ones more experienced, Burnett's side won the bigger league the next season and the subsequent play-offs.

Academy football is never as straight forward as the results suggest and now Tottenham's U21s boss will oversee another rebuild of the side, utilising many of the young players coming through Stuart Lewis' impressive U18s group such as Callum Olusesi, Oliver Irow, Jaden Williams and Damola Ajayi, who enjoyed a promising season last time out bouncing between the two age groups.

Young U18s striker George Feeney, just 16, signed from Glentoran this summer and will be hoping to push up the age groups this season after a bright start to life at the club. Postecoglou took a look at highly-rated U18s defender Jun'ai Byfield, who only turned 16 in March, in a behind-closed-doors friendly win against Cambridge United last month.

Among the U21s' more experienced core players to help guide the younger group at the moment are Luca Gunter, Alfie Dorrington, who is now back from injury, Dante Cassanova, the injured Tyrell Ashcroft and Hall, while Max Robson is currently the oldest outfield player in the group and is likely to be looking for senior football. Which of them remain by the time Friday's 11pm deadline comes to a close remains to be seen.

Spurs' U21s have been pulled apart after their success last season but that's no bad thing as it means those players have developed to a level where they can now play first team football wherever that may be.

It also presents other young talents with chances to impress and grow and while this season might be a tough one for the age group, it's a sign that the processes being put in place by academy head Simon Davies are working and will lead to further trophies and more importantly players who can play in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur in the years ahead.
