How Johan Lange can still finalise Tottenham transfers for Ange Postecoglou after deadline day

Time is quickly starting to run out as we edge ever closer to the summer transfer deadline. Now in the final two days of the summer window, any clubs still wanting to complete any remaining business need to move sharpish ahead of Friday's 11pm deadline.

It remains to be seen just how active Tottenham will be in the final 48 hours of the summer transfer market as in previous years they have been extremely busy trying to get deals over the line. Tottenham have so far signed six players for Ange Postecoglou this summer and supporters will no doubt be hoping that another player can come in through the door.

The Lilywhites should certainly be busy when it comes to moving players on before the 11pm cut-off point on Friday. Alfie Devine requires a loan move from Tottenham in order to play regularly after a very beneficial first year out on loan in 2023/24, while the north London club have to try and part with both Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso on a permanent basis.

Lo Celso has been linked with a return to Spanish side Real Betis, who Tottenham struck a deal with back in 2019 after an incredible year in La Liga. What may complicate potential deals for Spurs when it comes to Reguilon and Lo Celso is that interested clubs will look to sign them for a reduced fee due to their contract status.

The pair are now in the final year of their contract in N17 and that means loan deals aren't exactly viable for Tottenham with both able to leave for nothing next summer. One deal that looks set to come to fruition before the deadline is youngster George Abbott sealing a loan move to League Two side Notts County.

Even if Tottenham cannot finalise all outgoings before 11pm on Friday, Johan Lange and the club will still have opportunities to move players on after the transfer window has closed for business in the Premier League. The deadline for the vast majority of Europe's top leagues is on Friday, August 30 but the transfer market will still remain open for a number of other leagues.

Both the Eredivisie in the Netherlands and the Primeira Liga in Portugal have a few more days to run in their summer transfer window as their deadline is Monday, September 2. The deadline for clubs in the Saudi Pro League is reportedly September 2 as well following suggestions that clubs initially had until Sunday, October 6 to finalise transfers.

The transfer deadline for Greek clubs is Wednesday, September 11, with Turkish clubs having a further two days to complete any last remaining pieces of business. Due to the movement of players between Premier League and Super Lig clubs in recent years, we could see a few more transfers take place after the deadline of Friday, August 30 for Premier League clubs.

One example of this from last September was Davinson Sanchez departing Tottenham to seal a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray, which in turn raised a few eyebrows in the process as it left Spurs rather short at centre-back. Sanchez wasn't the only player to head to Istanbul on the same day as Tanguy Ndombele also joined Galatasaray but on a season-long loan.

Tottenham will be hoping that, in an ideal world, they can complete their last remaining outgoings before Friday's 11pm deadline for Premier League clubs. If not, a few options remain open to them when it comes to the squad overhaul needed to help Postecoglou's team hit the next level.

Tottenham fans won't have to wait too much longer to discover the team's Europa League opponents in the 2024/25 campaign. Following a year out of European competition after finishing eighth in the 2022/23 season, Ange Postecoglou guided the Lilywhites back into Europe in May after securing a fifth-place finish.

The Europa League will have a rather different look about it this season with all three of UEFA's club competitions operating with a new format. Rather than the traditional group phase of the competition comprising of 32 teams, 36 clubs will instead take part in a league format and play eight games in total before the knockout round begins in 2025.

As ever, clubs will be split into four different pots for Friday's draw at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco, with teams then drawn against two teams from each pot to determine the eight fixtures. In the league phase teams cannot face opponents from their own country and can be drawn against a maximum of two sides from the same nation.

With the Champions League draw in the schedule for Thursday, August 29, the draws for both the Europa League (12pm BST) and Europa Conference League (1.30pm BST) take place the following day. UEFA have already announced that the pots for the league phase draw will be confirmed at 7:30am (BST) on the day of the draw.

So who exactly could Tottenham be paired against in the Europa League league phase? Tuesday evening saw three further teams confirmed for the draw after exiting the Champions League play-off round.

Galatasaray, Malmo and Dynamo Kyiv will now play in the Europa League after failing to qualify for UEFA's premier competition. Qarabag, Midtjylland, Bodo/Glimt and Slavia Prague also join them after losing their respective Champions League play-off ties on Wednesday evening.

A further 12 teams will be confirmed on Thursday as the Europa League play-off round reaches its conclusion. Teams such as Ajax, Ludogorets Razgrad, Maccabi Tel Aviv and PAOK all look on course to join Tottenham in the league phase after recording healthy wins in the first leg of their play-off ties.

Here we take a look at the teams who have already qualified for the Europa League and the teams who could be set to secure their place.

Teams already qualified

Tottenham, Manchester United, Olympiacos, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, Roma, Lazio, Nice, Lyon, AZ, Porto, Galatasaray, Malmo, Dynamo Kyiv, Twente, Union Saint-Gilloise, Rangers, Fenerbahce, Qarabag, Midtjylland, Bodo/Glimt, Slavia Prague.

Hello, and welcome to live coverage of the Carabao Cup third-round draw.

The second round of the competition has been taking place this week, but Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs have been able to watch with their feet up. Their participation in European competitions means that they get a by straight into the third round.

Games conclude on Wednesday night with the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace and Fulham in action. Palace and Fulham both booked their place in the third round last night with West Ham in action tonight as they take on fellow Premier League side Bournemouth at the London Stadium.

A new rule change means that the third round draw will have some differences to usual, it means that the third round will be split over two separate weeks with six of the seven teams competing in Europe not being eligible to face each other.

Therefore, Arsenal and Tottenham will be in the group drawn first. Chelsea are slightly different due to the Conference League not starting until October.

Tottenham's Rodrigo Bentancur discovers fate after Copa America bottle

Rodrigo Bentancur has been handed a fourth-match international ban following his involvement in the ugly scenes that followed Uruguay's semi-final defeat against Colombia in the Copa America. Following Colombia's 1-0 victory in Charlotte, North Carolina in July, the main talking point after the game was the trouble that followed in the stands come the full-time whistle.

Fans situated near the Uruguayan players' families began to get out of control and it resulted in a few of the players, including Liverpool's Darwin Nunez, jumping into the stands amid the trouble. Footage of the incident then appeared to show Tottenham midfielder Bentancur hurl a battle from the touchline, which struck the forehead of Uruguay fitness coach Santiago Ferro who had climbed up into the stands.

Another angle showed a bottle smashing against Ferro's head, dazing him and the staff member could later be seen with blood coming from a cut on his forehead. A second video then appeared to show Bentancur throwing another object into the crowd before being ushered away by staff members.

Bentancur was one of 11 Uruguay players named after disciplinary investigations were opened by CONMEBOL following the unsavoury scenes after the Copa America semi-final. Following the investigation, CONMEBOL have sanctioned a total of 11 players, with Nunez, who could be seen confronting fans, receiving a five-match ban for his part in the incident.

As reported by Uruguayan journalist Rodrigo Romano, Bentancur has been banned for four matches and handed a $16,000 (£12,118) fine as a result, meaning he will be missing for Uruguay's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay, Venezuela, Peru and Ecuador. The Tottenham midfielder will be available to feature for his country once again in November when they host Colombia.

Mathias Olivera, Ronald Auaujo and Jose Maria Gimenez have all received three-match suspensions. Santiago Mele, Matias Vina, Sebastian Caceres, Emiliano Martinez, Facundo Pellistri and Brian Rodriguez all avoided a ban but were each fined $5,000 (£3,787). In total, the AUF (Uruguayan Football Association) and the 11 players recieved a fine of $120,000 (£90,885).

Eberechi Eze transfer announced, Vanderson decision and Richarlison leaves

Description

Tottenham Hotspur got the majority of their transfer business done early in the window. However, with just a few days left before the window closes for business under January, Spurs could be set for a busy end of the week.

Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray have been the highlight arrivals with Wilson Odobert arriving from Burnley. Oliver Skipp, Emerson Royal, Ryan Sessegnon, Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have all left the club meaning Ange Postecoglou's squad is slightly different to the one that ended last season.

The new campaign has started with a 1-1 draw against Leicester City and a thumping 4-0 win over Everton for Spurs. It's still early days but there is optimism that the north Londoners can make a return to the UEFA Champions League.

To do that, Tottenham's work in the final couple of days of the transfer window could determine whether they can beat the likes of Aston Villa and Chelsea to a top four spot. With that in mind, football.london has taken a go at managing Spurs to complete their transfer business.

Eze signs

Eberechi Eze is one of the Premier League stars that is yet to secure a big move this window. The Crystal Palace star has been linked with Spurs for some time and Manchester City were said to be keen on the England international.

James Maddison has shown his class in the first two games of the season from that advanced playmaker role but behind him, Postecoglou lacks a clinical No.10.

Lucas Bergvall is a promising talent at just 18 but someone of the calibre of Eze would drastically improve Tottenham. Last season, the Palace playmaker contributed to 17 goals in 31 appearances and has started this season in good fashion.

With the transfer window closing this week and Palace facing losing Marc Guehi, it may be a hard task to sign Eze. However, he would be the dream signing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Trim the attack

Postecoglou is fortunate to have a number of quality options in attack with seven players to choose from for three positions. With a fully fit squad, Son Heung-min, Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson are likely to be the first choice front three.

Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert will be desperate to impress when they get their chance while Timo Werner's versatility makes him such a good option. That leaves Richarlison's future in limbo.

The Brazilian has scored just 15 times in 68 games for Spurs and his two appearances this term have come off the bench. There's an argument that Tottenham should keep hold of the former Everton star for his energy and occasional moment of magic, but if the opportunity to cash in is there, it would be tempting.

Richarlison is going to struggle to break into the starting XI following the £65million investment in Solanke. If Postecoglou can get him firing and being an impactful option off the bench, then he could prove us wrong.

Vanderson decision

As mentioned before, Spurs' squad is well-stocked across the board. If any position required extra bodies it would be at full-back. The role is an important one in Postecoglou's set-up with Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro first-choice.

Djed Spence has replaced Porro when needed at right-back and Ben Davies is the second-choice on the left. Having another option would not be the worst thing and AS Monaco's Vanderson is said to be of interest.

Reports in France had stated that an offer of £25million was being considered by Spurs but no official move has yet been placed. The attack-minded full-back would offer more going forward for Postecoglou in Porro's absence.

The move would be a smart one this late in the window and a real coup for Spurs. However, it's not an area that is desperate for reinforcement with Spence looking likely to play a role in the Premier League this term.

Tottenham's £23.6m Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon transfer challenge before deadline day

Description

The final 48 hours of the summer transfer window is almost upon on us. Opening for business on Friday, June 14, clubs have until 11pm on Friday, August 30 to complete any remaining deals.

Tottenham have been busy finalising deals over the course of the summer but Johan Lange still has work to do for Ange Postecoglou. Spurs fans will be hoping for one more surprise in the transfer market before the 11pm deadline to add to the arrivals of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Timo Werner, Yang Min-hyeok, Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert.

However, outgoings could dominate all the talk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium between now and Friday evening as there are still some players who need to head elsewhere. Alfie Devine is one of those as he needs to be playing regular first-team football to help aid his development.

Flourishing on loan at Port Vale during the first half of last season, the attacking midfielder moved up a division in January and linked up with Plymouth Argyle but his time at Home Park wasn't as successful. Another loan spell in the Championship would be ideal for the Warrington-born youngster as it would add to his experience and also put him in a really good position when he returns to Hotspur Way for pre-season training next summer.

As important as a loan spell for Devine is, permanent exits for both Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso are perhaps the deals at the top of Tottenham's priority list. Both players quite clearly require fresh starts elsewhere and it could be extremely late in the window when they finally depart going on the summer so far.

In regards to Reguilon, the left-back has spent the past two seasons out on loan with a permanent exit not coming to fruition. Tottenham need to ensure they part with the Spaniard for good over the next couple of days simply due to the fact that he is now in the final year of his contract in north London.

Reguilon did not feature at all for the Lilywhites in pre-season and he was not included in the squad for the pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea in order "to explore prospective transfer opportunities". Whereas the left-back still remains with Tottenham over one month on from his tour omission, Bryan Gil, who was also left out alongside his fellow countryman, sealed a loan move to Girona one week after it was revealed that he would be staying behind to find a move.

Tottenham also have a similar issue with midfielder Lo Celso. Remaining part of Postecoglou's first-team plans last season but finding regular first-team opportunities so hard to come by, the Argentina international also requires a permanent exit as his contract also expires in the summer of 2025.

Not included in the matchday squad for the Bayern Munich friendly when Tottenham's returning internationals all featured, Lo Celso was then completely left out for the team's opening two Premier League fixtures. Aston Villa and Real Betis have been linked with the player this summer but at present he still remains a Tottenham player for the time being.

Reguilon and Lo Celso's contract status does present Tottenham with quite the challenge, especially now with extremely limited time left in the transfer window. As both players are in the final year of their contract and can leave for nothing next summer, some clubs may be more inclined to play the waiting game and either discuss pre-contract agreements with them from January or alternatively just wait until next summer when they are free agents rather than pay out money for them right now.

It doesn't make financial sense for clubs to buy a player for their true value when there is so little time left on their contract, thus in turn leaving Tottenham open to receiving low offers for the pair, with Reguilon and Lo Celso valued at £10.1million and £13.5million respectively by Transfermarkt. Loan deals for both in previous years maybe would have sufficed but it is not something that really works for Spurs right now because there is only a matter of months to go on their contracts.

As part of the much-needed changes taking place at Tottenham this summer, Lange needs to sell Reguilon and Lo Celso permanently as the club plan for the years ahead. It does appear to be proving quite the challenge, though, as the duo still remain Tottenham players heading into the final couple of days of the summer transfer window.

Former Celtic boss believes Dominic Solanke is key to unlocking the true Postecoglou Tottenham

Description

Former Celtic and Scotland boss Gordon Strachan believes that Dominic Solanke will play his part in unlocking the true version of Ange Postecoglou football at Tottenham Hotspur.

The £65million signing from Bournemouth missed Saturday's 4-0 thumping of Everton with an ankle injury, but Postecoglou is excited about what the 26-year-old will bring to his team following his summer move. Strachan believes that faith is well placed and that the ex-Cherries striker, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, will link everything together up front.

"I think Solanke is more than just a goal-scorer. He's a threat all the time, he wants to go in behind. Everyone always talks about a striker getting you 20 or 25 goals a season, but I don’t think that many teams play with one striker that is the complete focal point of a team, where all of the other players are there to feed him," he said to Lord Ping.

"I think Ange wants all of his players in the attacking areas to contribute for him. That’s what happened with his Celtic teams - it wasn’t about one man taking on the scoring burden, it was about everyone chipping in.

"He’ll look at it and think, ‘what can my front three give me?’ He’ll be looking at total goals, so he’ll be happy if Solanke gets 15 goals and Son or Kulusevski get 10 each. That’s what he’ll be aiming for."

He added: "If you’re looking for an out-and-out finisher, then you have to watch Manchester City. Everyone always talks about the limited number of touches that Erling Haaland has, but it’s a complete nonsense because he is in the team to finish off the moves and he does it brilliantly. Keep him as far away from the game as possible. Ange played a bit like that at Celtic with Kyogo finishing everything.

"He’ll get all of his players to play around Solanke and to create opportunities for him, but Solanke may have to make a few adjustments to his game and resist the urge to drop off, because we know he’s got the ability to do that.

"Tottenham definitely needed a player to apply the finishing touch. Hopefully, Ange has found that man in Dom Solanke."

Dream Tottenham end to summer transfer window

Description

Tottenham could be set for a busy final few days to the summer transfer window. Ange Postecoglou and Johan Lange have already worked to seal a number of important deals including arrivals for Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray alongside exits for Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Having acquired a versatile young talent in Gray and a Premier League-proven striker in Solanke, Spurs' priority in the final few weeks of the window looked to be a winger. The likes of Federico Chiesa, Johan Bakayoko and Pedro Neto have been linked, though it was Wilson Odobert of Burnley that joined after the latter signed for Chelsea.

With that switch confirmed last week, there appears to be no position that obviously needs strengthening as Postecoglou seems happy with the midfield depth provided by Gray and Lucas Bergvall. That stance could of course change if a unique market opportunity arises in the final 48 hours of the window and that is certainly possible.

Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze has been a long-term target of Tottenham with links continuing throughout the summer. Though the Eagles have already lost Michael Olise, the departure of Joachim Andersen and potential transfer of Marc Guehi to Newcastle United shows, that at the right price, Palace are open to losing two key players in one position.

Alternatively, with a significant cash injection likely to arrive from Guehi's move to St James' Park, the move collapsing at the final hurdle could feasibly see Palace panic into selling a different star player to raise funds. With Manchester City bringing Ilkay Gundogan back to Etihad Stadium, their interest in Eze will have likely cooled.

If that is the case, there is a chance it is a deal that Spurs revisit by making a last-ditch attempt to try and convince him of a move to north London. Arguably, full-back is the only position that could do with some extra bodies, just purely because of how important the role is in Postecoglou's setup.

Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro are clearly first-choice and while the likes of Ben Davies, Micky van de Ven, Djed Spence and now Gray can cover, another option would not be the worst thing in the world. One player said to be of interest to the Lilywhites is AS Monaco and Brazil defender Vanderson.

The 23-year-old emerged as a potential summer acquisition for a number of weeks with links reigniting as the closing of the current window edges closer. Reports in France are now stating that Spurs are willing to offer £25million in order to sign him with the French club valuing him in the region of that proposed bid.

With Spence, Van de Ven and Davies all more likely to be deployed on the left, the door could open for Vanderson to compete for the spot on his favoured side against Porro and potentially Gray, though his long-term future lies in midfield. Sealing exits also remains a clear priority with Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon the two players most likely to depart. Manor Solomon has also sealed a loan move to Leeds United.

Richarlison is another senior member of the squad linked to a departure, despite his own statement insisting he is committed to Spurs. Postecoglou has also shown no indication he would sanction an exit for the Brazil international considering the depth he offers and the fact he will likely be needed over the coming months.

Despite that, he did not start against former club Everton in the absence of Solanke over the weekend with club captain Son Heung-min preferred centrally and new signing Odobert given the nod out wide. Though he is expected to stay, his future remains somewhat uncertain and a lucrative bid could see him depart the club.

Tottenham reunion for Jamie Donley, big Hojbjerg moment, happy Veliz and Bryan Gil impresses

Description

Most of Tottenham Hotspur's loan players have been getting plenty of minutes at their new clubs as their seasons really get up and running.

A busy summer transfer window in N17 has resulted in a huge overhaul of Ange Postecoglou's squad and that means a growing number of players will be plying their trade elsewhere on loan for the 2024/25 season. Spurs now have eight players out on loan for the coming season, with some in the Football League with others in Spain and France.

Manor Solomon became the latest loan player to head out of the exit door on Tuesday when he joined Leeds United for a season in the Championship.

So how exactly have his fellow Tottenham players out on loan fared in recent days? football.london takes a look below.

Bryan Gil (Girona)

Bryan Gil is getting the game time that his move to Girona was all about as he got the full 90 minutes of the 3-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Sunday.

The 23-year-old has started both of his first two games for his new club, getting 171 minutes across those two matches which means with one more start he will likely surpass his minutes in the entire 2023/24 season in which he played 233 minutes across 12 appearances for Spurs.

Against Atletico, Gil made four dribbles, one key pass and had four shots on goal, all off target, in a busy display in which he touched the ball more than most of his fellow attackers. He also made three tackles and one interceptions to show the defensive side of his game.

In WhoScored's stats-based ratings, the young Spaniard was handed the highest rating of anyone in the Girona side with 6.77 despite his side's defeat.

"A lot of work ahead, but this doesn't stop. Already thinking about Thursday's game. Head up, this has just begun!!" said Gil on Instagram after the game.

The young winger also has Champions League football to look to with the draw this week which will feature Girona in the group stages.

Alejo Veliz (Espanyol)

Like Gil, Alejo Veliz will be very happy that he has already had plenty of minutes and has actually surpassed the combined total of game time he had with both Spurs and Sevilla last season.

The 20-year-old Argentine played 45 minutes for Tottenham and 31 in La Liga but in his first two games in the Spanish top flight with Espanyol he's already racked up a grand 160 minutes.

He played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 defeat at home to Real Sociedad on Saturday. Veliz hit two of his four shots on target, played one key pass, made four clearances and picked up a second half yellow card for his efforts.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Marseille)

We're including Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as part of Tottenham's loan army as he technically joined Marseille on loan with an obligation to buy last month which does not kick in until a certain point.

The 29-year-old midfielder received a major honour this week when he was named as the new captain of Denmark, taking on the armband from Simon Kjaer ahead of vice-captains Christian Eriksen and Kasper Schmeichel.

The Dane also continued his unbeaten start to life in Ligue 1 as they drew 2-2 at home to Stade Reims. In a typically all-action display from Hojbjerg he sent two shots on target, played one key pass, made one interception and played the second-most passes on the pitch with 96 with a 96.9% success rate.

Ashley Phillips (Stoke City)

Nineteen-year-old Ashley Phillips has made the move to Championship side Stoke City and just a day later had to watch on from the bench as they lost 2-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion in his first game on Saturday. The teenager will be hoping to play in Tuesday night's Carabao Cup game against Middlesbrough.

Stoke's sporting director Jon Walters said: "Whilst we identified the need to bring another central defender into our squad sometime ago, we opted to remain patient and await the right player of the right quality to become available. We’re delighted that our conversations with Ashley and with Tottenham have led to them each believing that Stoke City is the right club for him amid no shortage of competition.

"It’s clear that he has all the attributes to become an outstanding defender at this level and beyond, and we’re all excited to see what he can achieve for us this season."

Phillips added: “I’m really excited to be at Stoke City and can’t wait to get started. It’s a massive club, one I believe deserves to be pushing up the Championship table, and I’m here to help us finish as high in the league as we can.

"I’ve done my pre-season work, had some great minutes playing, training and learning so much from some fantastic players with the first team squad at Spurs, now I’m ready to kick-on and raring to go."

Dane Scarlett (Oxford United)

Dane Scarlett has so far not been able to find the game time he would have hoped for from his move to promoted Championship side Oxford United.

After coming off the bench in his first game at Coventry in the 89th minute, on Saturday the 20-year-old was an unused substitute as Oxford lost 2-1 at Blackburn.

The young striker will be hoping to get some game time in Tuesday night's Carabao Cup game at Coventry and more minutes overall after a loan spell last season at Ipswich which was a particularly frustrating one.

Jamie Donley (Leyton Orient)

One player getting plenty of minutes in League One is Jamie Donley, who has started both of Leyton Orient's first two matches of the campaign.

On Saturday the 19-year-old played the full 90 minutes of the 2-1 home defeat to Birmingham, finding himself up against Postecoglou's former senior assistant coach Chris Davies, who is now the manager of the Midlands side and was believed to be among those keen on bringing in Donley at one point.

The creative teenager played three key passes on the day, had three shots at goal, made one dribble and completed two tackles and three clearances, however a goalkeeping gaffe ended up costing Orient a share of the spoils.

Donley is another who could get further minutes in the Carabao Cup as Orient travel Millwall in the second round on Tuesday evening.

Matthew Craig (Barnsley)

After a busy start to life in Barnsley, Matthew Craig had to miss the 2-2 draw with Northampton Town in League One at the weekend with what his manager Darrell Clarke called "a minor calf injury".

The Barnsley boss was hopeful that the 21-year would be fit enough to take part in the Carabao Cup clash at home against Sheffield United on Tuesday night after impressing in his first three games for the club.
