Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham coaching staff will have a new look about it heading into the 2024/25 Premier League campaign following a double appointment. On Tuesday evening it was confirmed that Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo will begin work in N17 at the start of pre-season after joining as assistant coaches.

The other major change sees Matt Wells promoted to senior assistant coach, replacing Chris Davies following his decision to become Birmingham City manager at the beginning of June. Montgomery may well be familiar to some Tottenham fans after a long playing career with Sheffield United and a spell in charge of Scottish side Hibs last season.

Someone Postecoglou clearly rates very highly following a hugely successful time as Central Coast Mariners boss before his switch to Edinburgh last September, the addition of Montgomery to Spurs' coaching ranks could prove to be a shrewd decision. The Yorkshireman will be intent on making a huge impact on the training pitch at Hotspur Way and some of the 42-year-old's former players have already explained what Tottenham players can expect from the new addition.

Manchester United youngster Will Fish spent last season on loan at Hibs and he soon got to discover what training is like under the former Sheffield United midfielder following his September arrival.

"Every training session we have had since the gaffer came in has been really good," Fish told the club's website. "There has been a lot of tactical work and it feels like we are going into games well-organised with a good game plan.

"A lot of the lads have been very impressed with the tactical knowledge of him and his staff. The ideas that the gaffer is trying to bring to the team have all been positive, and I am sure we will benefit from it long term. The style of football has changed, and our training sessions have been more intense, more tactical and have been really enjoyable."

Fellow Hibs player Martin Boyle also revealed that the team's international players are also kept up to date even when they're away on international duty as training is recorded every day for them to watch back. The Australia international went on to say that Montgomery's attention to detail "has probably been the best I have seen from a manager".

"The other boys get battered when we're away. But they are also sending us videos and information, and there's zoom calls, so we are always in the loop," he explained in an interview with The Scotsman.

"They video training every day so we can watch it back. So, all the information is there and we are very clued up when we get back. It’s not a case of walking into the unknown.

"The attention to detail has probably been the best I have seen from a manager. We are taking it on board and hopefully we can push for that third spot."

Montgomery's move to Easter Road last September saw him reunited with right-back Lewis Miller. The pair had worked together in Central Coast Mariners' academy before the Australian defender headed to Hibs in June 2022.

Miller gave a real insight into life under Montgomery and very much indicated that the coach is a father figure to him and that it is sometimes "tough love" due to his incredibly high standards

"He's like my dad, to be honest," said Miller (via Football Scotland). "I've been with him since the Mariners academy, and I've said before it's a tough love. He's going to tell you when you're out of place and when you're doing the right thing. But if I listen to how he wants me to play and his philosophies then the team will fly - and I'll fly individually.

"He knows who I am as a person. He knows how to keep me in line and behave. There's a lot of respect for him at this club, as there should be. We're going to follow him step-by-step, trust the process and I think we'll get wins down the line."

As Postecoglou sets up training so the coaching staff all take 15 minutes each to keep the players nice and sharp and on their toes, the Tottenham squad will soon get their first taste of life under Montgomery on the training ground. A straight shooter and someone with very high standards on the training pitch, he will certainly not be afraid to let anyone know if standards are slipping at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham have signed a talented young striker in 16-year-old George Feeney who will arrive at the club next week with the aim of eventually progressing from the club's academy into Ange Postecoglou's first team.

football.london reported on Tuesday that Spurs had seen off competition from Brighton, Brentford, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest to sign the Glentoran teenager for a fee that is expected to include add-ons to benefit his Northern Irish club in the future.

Feeney, son of former Bournemouth, Luton and Northern Ireland striker Warren Feeney, will arrive at Hotspur Way next week to begin life in the academy with Stuart Lewis' U18 side, where he will also work with academy coaches Bradley Allen and Jermain Defoe, who played with his father, with the aim of progressing through the levels eventually to the first team.

The Newport-born youngster is the subject of an international tug of war between Wales and Northern Ireland, having played for both at U16 level and also for the latter in U17 matches.

In the latest episode of their podcast Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham, our Spurs correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest discussed the signing of the talented teenager, following the return of Timo Werner for another season in N17, as well as the latest on the search for a first team striker for Postecoglou, among plenty of other topics of discussion around the club.

Ange Postecoglou has already given exciting Nick Montgomery verdict for Tottenham academy stars

It is perhaps no surprise to see Nick Montgomery become part of Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham coaching setup ahead of next season. The former Hibs head coach joins the club's ranks following his dismissal from the Scottish side in May and he will also be joined in north London by his trusted assistant Sergio Raimundo.

Montgomery and Raimundo worked alongside each other at Central Coast Mariners and Hibs and they will once again do likewise at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as assistant coaches. Montgomery is certainly no stranger to Postecoglou after a successful time in Australia with the Mariners.

Firstly playing for the Gosford-based side after departing Sheffield United in 2012, the 42-year-old would later become an assistant coach with the Australian outfit before eventually becoming head coach in July 2021. It proved to be a very successful time for Montgomery as he led his team to the A-League championship in 2023.

The Mariners didn't finish top of the league table during the regular season but they produced when it mattered most in the finals series as they ran riot against Melbourne City in the Grand Final after defeating them 6-1. His work in Australia of course came to the attention of Postecoglou, who heaped praise on his fellow coach last September when asked about Montgomery in a pre-match press conference.

"Nick has done brilliantly in Australia," he said following Montgomery's decision to become Hibs boss. "He did a fantastic job at a club that it is fair to say in Australia is not considered one of the big ones and won the whole thing last year. He has done it in a great way where he has developed young players and great he gets the opportunity.

"I am glad people are looking beyond the obvious in terms of candidates whether they are at their doorstep or on the other side of the world. I have no doubt he will do well.

"I think Hibs is a great club. I remember from being up there it is a big club. When you play against them, you feel like it is a big club and there is an opportunity there to get them into a decent position in the Premiership and European football. I am sure Nick will do that so pleased for him."

What Postecoglou mentioned about the fact that Montgomery has "developed young players" could well hint at what's to come for the Leeds-born coach during his time at Tottenham, with the 58-year-old again mentioning that key factor when speaking about the coaching changes taking place in north London. The Lilywhites have some very impressive youngsters coming through the system at present and Montgomery may well push for them to get their chance in Postecoglou's Tottenham team.

Jamie Donley featured in the Spurs squad on a number of occasions last season and he will be looking to build on his four senior appearances heading into the new season. Tottenham also have high hopes for Mikey Moore and Tyrese Hall, with the former going on the train with the first team in the final weeks of the 2023/24 season and feature in their last two games against Man City and Sheffield United.

Hall, on the other hand, really caught the eye in a cameo appearance in Tottenham's post-season friendly against Newcastle United and he could be given a few more opportunities by Postecoglou in pre-season and beyond. football.london reported in June that the head coach has taken a real liking to Moore and Hall in particular.

Will Lankshear, George Abbott, Alfie Devine and Yago Santiago are also some of the others who will be looking for pitch time in pre-season and they could well go on to develop and benefit from working under Montgomery. The same goes for Swedish ace Lucas Bergvall, who will link up with his Spurs teammates for the very first time next week following his move from Djurgarden.

Although his time in Scotland with Hibs did not go as planned, Montgomery made quite the impression in Australia and Postecoglou clearly believes that he can have a huge impact as part of his Tottenham team going forward. At a time when Tottenham fans want to see more of the club's youngsters make the step up from the academy to the first team, the arrival of Montgomery to the coaching staff could prove to be a very shrewd appointment.

Ange Postecoglou praise has explained major Tottenham recruitment decision

Ange Postecoglou has already made his admiration for Nick Montgomery clear as he prepares to bring the former Hibernian boss on to his Tottenham coaching staff with Sergio Raimundo.

Postecoglou lost his senior assistant head coach Chris Davies to his first managerial job at Birmingham City this summer and has moved to bolster his Tottenham staff with the arrival of former Sheffield United midfielder Montgomery and Raimundo, although neither will be directly replacing 39-year-old Davies. That job will go to the promoted Matt Wells.

The Spurs boss has previously spoken about Montgomery, after the Leeds-born coach won the A-League with Central Coast Mariners last year and was then brought to Scotland by Hibernian last season.

"Nick has done brilliantly in Australia. He did a fantastic job at a club that it is fair to say in Australia is not considered one of the big ones and won the whole thing last year," Postecoglou said in September. "He has done it in a great way where he has developed young players and great he gets the opportunity.

"I am glad people are looking beyond the obvious in terms of candidates whether they are at their doorstep or on the other side of the world. I have no doubt he will do well. I think Hibs is a great club. I remember from being up there it is a big club. When you play against them, you feel like it is a big club and there is an opportunity there to get them into a decent position in the Premiership and European football. I am sure Nick will do that so pleased for him."

At that time, Montgomery had praised Postecoglou's work in forging a path to Europe for other coaches working in Australia to follow as he won five trophies in two seasons at Celtic, including the treble before leaving for Tottenham last summer and a fifth-placed finish in his first season in the Premier League.

"The media around Ange and the negativity when he came over to Scotland, he quashed that pretty quickly," said the 42-year-old. "Ange is a good guy and I saw the work he did in the A-League in terms of the success he had there and in Japan.

"I saw how good it was for Australian football and he gets a lot of support over there. He has had success everywhere he’s been and I have seen him. I have played against his teams when I first went out there, but I have never coached against him because he had already moved. But I have followed him closely and been impressed with what he’s achieved and I’m sure he is going to be able to achieve more."

Montgomery, who became an Australian citizen in 2017, only lasted eight months at Hibernian before being sacked after failing to finish in the top six in the Scottish Premiership. Some fans of the Edinburgh club felt he had not had long enough to implement his philosophy of attractive, possession-based football and criticised the recruitment, but many supporters had turned on him by the end of the campaign.

Montgomery reportedly rejected a return to manage Melbourne Victory this summer back in the A-League in order to remain in the UK with the offer coming from Postecoglou to get his coaching career back on track.

His assistant at both Central Coast and Hibernian, the Lisbon-born 39-year-old Sergio Raimundo will also be joining Postecoglou's coaching staff.

The Portuguese speaks six different languages and came through the University of Lisbon, before sharing a mentor with Jose Mourinho in Professor Manuel Sergio, who believed Portuguese coaches should also be a psychologist as well as a trainer.

He began working in Benfica's academy before his career took him across the world with jobs in Senegal, Brazil, Canada and Austria. He and Montgomery forged a friendship while undertaking a UEFA A licence coaching course in Belfast, alongside the likes of Harry Kewell, Gaizka Mendieta and Benni McCarthy.

The duo would go on to work together in the Central Coast Mariners academy with great success before taking that to the first team, continuing to develop many of the young players and transforming the Mariners into A-League winners in 2023.

Raimundo previously spent three years in the Portuguese military, a culture shock after his early years playing in rock bands, so he will be disciplined in the way he pushes Postecoglou's players and he said in an A-League interview last year he said he sees a kindred spirit in Montgomery.

"Nick is someone very much of the same mindset. He was never in the army but he could’ve been because his family background is from the army. His father was there and he’s very disciplined,” he said.

"Everything put us together and combining into a moment – the knowledge, his experience as a pro footballer. That’s why we’re pushing the boys here to their best. Physically but almost mentally. That’s why they’re so strong. We can go 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 down… it doesn’t matter because we believe we can score one more than the opponent."

Both men are set to bring plenty of discipline and Postecoglou's required workrate to the training sessions at Tottenham. The Spurs boss sets up training so the coaching staff all take 15 minutes each to keep the players on their toes throughout the sessions, which last the same 95-100 minutes as matches do and with the same intensity.

Montgomery and Raimundo will be joining a coaching staff under Postecoglou that currently contains Wells, Ryan Mason, Mile Jedinak and goalkeeping coach Rob Burch.

The arrival of Montgomery and Raimundo is another example of Postecoglou looking for like-minded coaches that he can give an opportunity to, push on his club and put them in the frame to get back into management themselves.

I told Tottenham the perfect Harry Kane replacement – now Chelsea may sign him for £17m

Tottenham Hotspur could live to regret not taking Antonio Conte’s advice to sign Lille striker Jonathan David.

It was previously claimed that the ex-Spurs boss had earmarked the forward as a possible successor to Harry Kane. Both Conte and former sporting director Fabio Paratici were said to have held David in high regard before both men left the club in early 2023.

It is understood that Spurs are in the hunt for a striker this summer. And Ligue 1 hitman David remains among their list of targets.

The Canada international, who scored 26 goals this season, has long been touted with a Premier League move. Tottenham ultimately opted against a direct replacement when Kane left for Bayern Munich, instead signing winger Brennan Johnson.

And Chelsea could belatedly take advantage of that decision with a cut-price deal for David this summer. It has been reported that the Blues are seriously interested in the Lille striker.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg has claimed that the Blues have inquired about the 24-year-old, who is also said to be a target for West Ham and Manchester United.

Spurs were seemingly put off by David’s reported £51million price-tag last summer, but he is expected to be available for significantly less this time around. The striker is set to enter the final year of his contract, with Lille said to be willing to accept a fee between £17 and £21million (€20-25million).

While that type of asking price will delight Chelsea as they seek to find competition for Nicolas Jackson up front, it also reminds Spurs why Conte was supposedly keen on the striker. Last season, both Richarlison and Son Heung-min attempted to fill the void left by Kane to varying degrees of success.

Richarlison significantly improved after his frustrating debut season, finishing with 11 league goals. Meanwhile, Son was prolific for Ange Postecoglou’s side, scoring 17 goals in the Premier League, and made the number nine spot his own in the latter stages of the campaign.

Despite Son’s success in a more central role – 14 goals in 23 games – it did not match up with Tottenham’s results, earning a total of 36 points. The slump that Spurs suffered at the most crucial stage of the season ended up costing the club a Champions League place.

While Son more than held up his end of the bargain, the decision to use the Spurs captain as a striker perhaps altered the balance of Postecoglou’s side. Timo Werner was signed in the January window to fill Son’s space on the left flank, with Johnson also occasionally taking up the role.

Almost a year on from Kane leaving the club, David’s likely exit from Lille provides a clear reminder that Spurs have a key problem to fix during the summer transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou set to discover Tottenham player fate ahead of pre

Description

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham side will soon be back on the pitch with their first pre-season game now not too far away. Starting the summer with a friendly against Scottish Premiership side Hearts at Tynecastle, the teams will go head-to-head in Edinburgh on Wednesday, July 17.

Tottenham's first team players are expected to start filtering back to the club's Hotspur Way training base for pre-season work from Saturday, July 6. Postecoglou will have a decent amount of his squad to work with in the opening weeks of their summer training as only a handful of players got the nod for Euro 2024 and the Copa America.

In terms of those at the Euros, Guglielmo Vicario, Radu Dragusin, Micky van de Ven and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are representing their respective countries in Germany. Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso are then on Argentina duty at the Copa America, with Rodrigo Bentancur playing for Uruguay in the United States.

The group phase of Euro 2024 is now drawing to a conclusion, with the final two groups due to be wrapped up on Wednesday evening. Vicario and Italy are safely through to the Round of 16 after Italy salvaged a late point against Croatia on Monday courtesy of Mattia Zaccagni's fine strike in the 98th minute of the contest.

Van de Ven and Netherlands are also through to the knockout stage of the competition ahead of their final match against Austria on Tuesday. Even if they do lose against Austria in Berlin, Oranje will still advance as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.

Hojbjerg will be hoping to join his Tottenham compatriots in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night when Denmark play their final game against Serbia. In a good position to go through as they currently sit second in Group C, there is still the possibility that the Danes suffer an early exit if they lose against Serbia and Slovenia do not in their match against England.

If Denmark and Slovenia both lose, they will be split for third and fourth place by overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary points and finally European qualifier rankings if they are still level. An early elimination for Hojbjerg and Denmark would see the midfielder make his return to Hotspur Way perhaps earlier than expected once he has had his summer break.

A summer exit does look a real possibility for the experienced player due to his lack of regular football under Postecoglou last term and Denmark potentially heading home early could possibly speed up a permanent transfer away from Tottenham. Linked with Atletico Madrid already this summer, reports from Bild in Germany suggest that Borussia Dortmund are keen on a move for Hojbjerg before the summer transfer deadline.

Wednesday will then see Group E come to a conclusion and it promises to be a very interesting 90 minutes as Dragusin and Romania look to seal their passage through to the Round of 16. Romania currently sit top of the standings after two games but all four teams are level on three points.

Romania just need to avoid defeat to Slovakia to finish in the top two of Group E and subsequently advance through to the final 16. Lose, however, and Ukraine avoiding defeat against Belgium will see Dragusin's country crash out of the Euros.

Postecoglou will certainly have a better idea over the next two days of when exactly some of his international stars will be due to return to Hotspur Way for pre-season training following their summer breaks immediately after exiting the Euros. While of course the Australian will want all his players to go as far as possible and taste glory on the international stage, an early return to pre-season training for Dragusin would certainly be beneficial to the player, head coach and club.

The talented centre-back has yet to get a taste of a pre-season under Postecoglou after arriving from Genoa in early January and this summer is important for the 22-year-old as he looks to feature more regularly in his first full campaign in N17. In regards to the three Tottenham stars playing at the Copa America, the group phase of the competition comes to a close early next week.

Argentina started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Canada and they will be expected to triumph over Chile and Peru in their final two Group A fixtures. Uruguay, on the other hand, are also in a good position to advance after recording three points with a 3-1 win over Panama.

Qualification through to the next stage of the competition could even be secured on Thursday when Bentancur and Co. take on Bolivia. Both Uruguay and Argentina will be expected to go deep into the competition in the United States, meaning it could possibly be a fairly late return to Tottenham pre-season training for Romero, Lo Celso and Bentancur.

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham coaching staff to be boosted by two new arrivals

Ange Postecoglou is set to add to his Tottenham coaching staff ahead of the 2024/25 season with the appointment of Nick Montgomery and Sergio Raimundo to the club's ranks. At the beginning of June it was confirmed that Chris Davies would leave his role as senior assistant coach to take on the managerial hotseat at League One side Birmingham City.

Needing to add to his backroom team for the new season, Postecoglou will now be joined at Tottenham by Montgomery and Raimundo, as first reported by FTBL in Australia. Montgomery was last in charge of Scottish side Hibs but was sacked in May, with Raimundo assistant to the former Sheffield United midfielder.

Neither Montgomery or Raimundo are expected to directly replace Davies at Tottenham. Montgomery is someone Postecoglou is well aware of following the 42-year-old's time in Australia. After his spell at Sheffield United came to an end in 2012, Montgomery headed for Australia to link up with Central Coast Mariners.

Following his retirement as a player after time with Wollongong Wolves, the former Scotland Under-21s international re-joined Central Coast Mariners as assistant coach before later becoming head coach in July 2021. It proved to be a successful time in the dugout for the Yorkshireman as he led Mariners to the A-League Championship in 2023.

Coming to the attention of Hibs in the process, Montgomery took on the hotseat in September 2023 but he was sacked back in May after they finished the season in eighth. Postecoglou was quizzed in September about Montgomery becoming Hibs coach and he was full of praise for his counterpart.

"Nick has done brilliantly in Australia," he explained.

It won't be long at all until Montgomery and Raimundo get to work with Postecoglou and the Tottenham squad for the first time as Spurs' first team players are expected to start filtering back to the club's Hotspur Way training base for pre-season work from Saturday, July 6. Spurs' first friendly of the summer comes against Hearts, thus seeing Montgomery make an immediate return to Edinburgh as he comes up against Hibs' city rivals.

Tottenham given Conor Gallagher transfer 'green light' as Ange Postecoglou eyes midfield rebuild

Ange Postecoglou could soon make room for Conor Gallagher at Tottenham Hotspur. The 24-year-old midfielder faces an increasingly uncertain future at Chelsea, with just 12 months left on his contract.

Playing a key role in Mauricio Pochettino's side, Gallagher helped the Blues clamber into sixth place in the Premier League and achieve Conference League qualification. He featured 37 times, scoring five goals and providing seven assists.

Not only did the Cobham graduate catch Gareth Southgate's eye, earning a place in the England squad for Euro 2024, but he also courted interest from Spurs. football.london understands that the Lilywhites have shortlisted Gallagher as a target this summer.

It's believed that the Chelsea ace has 'very little intention' of leaving Stamford Bridge, though. When quizzed on his contract situation earlier this month, Gallagher committed his future to the west Londoners.

"I’m sure that will get sorted out, everyone knows Chelsea is my club and I love playing for them," he said. "The fans are brilliant and I’m loving right now and I’m sure it will get itself sorted out."

While Gallagher seems set on staying at Chelsea, Tottenham may be left no choice but to test the England international's resolve. According to German publication Bild, Borussia Dortmund are interested in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who sees his deal expire next year.

The report states that the Bundesliga giants also want to sign Pascal Gross from Brighton. With Dortmund chasing Hojbjerg, Spurs have essentially been given the green light to go and revamp their midfield.

Though slightly further up-field, Eberechi Eze also remains a target for Tottenham this summer. Playing a key role in Oliver Glasner's side, Eze helped steer the Eagles away from a relegation scrap and finish 10th.

The England international, who sees his contract at Selhurst Park expire in June 2027, featured 27 times in the English top flight, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists. Tottenham have named Eze has a 'priority target' this summer, football.london understands.
