Tottenham beat Premier League rivals to record

Tottenham are set to announce the arrival of 16-year-old Glentoran striker George Feeney after seeing off competition from across the Premier League to sign the youngster.

The teenager became the Northern Irish side's youngest ever goalscorer in their history in October last year when, as a 15-year-old, he netted with an excellent effort in the second half of Glentoran's BetMcLean Cup first round victory against Dollingstown. Feeney has been the subject of an international tug of war between the football associations of Northern Ireland and Wales, who both want him in their international pathway.

Feeney became a regular around the Glentoran first squad last season and played senior league football despite his age having scored plenty of goals for the East Belfast club's young reserve team across the campaign.

football.london understands that Tottenham saw off interest from Brighton, Brentford, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest to sign the teenager for a fee that is expected to include add-ons to benefit Glentoran in the future. The forward will arrive at the north London club next week and will be announced in the coming intake of new academy scholars, which is normally released to the public early in July each year by the club.

The talented young forward, who turned 16 in January, comes from a long line of international football heritage and is the son of former Bournemouth, Luton and Northern Ireland striker Warren Feeney, who managed him at Glentoran. That George was born in Newport has meant that the teenager has played for both Northern Ireland and Wales at U16 level international as well as at U17s for the former and both countries are believed to be keen on taking the pacey, clinical young striker into their fold.

If Feeney was to become a senior international one day then he would become the fourth generation of his family to do so, following his father Warren, grandfather Warren Snr and great grandfather Jim.

There is set to be a certain symmetry in the teenager's career as he will go initially into Spurs' successful U18s side, which is coached by Stuart Lewis along with Bradley Allen and Jermain Defoe, who Feeney's father Warren played alongside at Bournemouth in 2001, while on loan from Leeds United.

That was later in a season in which a teenage Defoe, on loan himself from West Ham, had already scored in a record-equalling ten consecutive matches, so the England international should be able to impart plenty of knowledge to the younger Feeney looking to make his mark in the game in the months and years ahead.

Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham handed Europa League challenge with key issue already clear

Description

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham team only played 41 games in all competitions last season as a result of no European football and disappointing cup exits. However, that will not be the case in the 2024/25 campaign following the team's return to Europe.

Spurs will take part in the Europa League from September onwards and UEFA's second club competition will have a rather different look about it. Rather than operating with the usual group stage format, there will be 36 teams taking part in one big league table and each side will face eight league phase fixtures.

Add those eight games to Tottenham's 38 league fixtures plus the team entering the third round of both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, the Lilywhites will have a minimum of 48 matches in the 2024/25 season. That total could even rise to around 60 matches if Postecoglou's team are to go far in all three cup competitions.

As Tottenham are to face a rather hectic schedule from August onwards, a number of their Premier League fixtures will have to be moved as a result of their Europa League qualification. Spurs and their supporters will have to contend with a host of league fixtures taking place on Sunday due to Europa League games being played on a Thursday evening.

So, following the release of the 2024/25 Premier League schedule one week ago, which of Tottenham's league fixtures in the first part of the term will be moved? football.london takes a look below.

The away fixture against Manchester United pencilled in for Saturday, September 28 could potentially be moved depending on when exactly Tottenham and the Red Devils play their first Europa League league phase game. Matchday 1 is in the calendar for both Wednesday and Thursday evening that week and the only way the fixture could avoid a change is if both teams are down to play on the opening night, unless of course it is selected for TV coverage on the Sunday anyway.

That will all become clear at the end of August when the draw for the league phase takes place. Amid the question marks over the game against Erik ten Hag's side, Spurs' following match away at Brighton & Hove Albion will need to be adjusted as it is currently down to be played on Saturday, October 5, which is two days after their second European game.

Spurs' game at Crystal Palace on Saturday, October 26 will very likely take place the following day due to their European commitments, as well as the fact that round four of the Carabao Cup is scheduled to be played a couple of days later. Tottenham's home showdown against Ipswich Town on Saturday, November 9 will also be moved to a Sunday before domestic football goes on pause for November's international break.

Once league football resumes later in November, Matchday five in the Europa League on Thursday, November 28 will push back Tottenham's home game against Fulham. As a result of that change to the fixture, the midweek trip to Bournemouth will also need to be moved as it is currently in the calendar for Tuesday, December 3.

A further round of Europa League action follows in December, thus meaning there will be a change to the Southampton game that is due to take place at St Mary's on Saturday, December 14. Whereas previously the group stage in UEFA's three club competitions would come to a close in the middle of December, European football carries on into late January due to the expansion of the competitions.

As a result of that, there will be changes to Tottenham's home game against Leicester and away trip to Brentford. Due to the amount of travelling when it comes to European games, clubs always like their home comforts on their return to Premier League football.

For Spurs, they will be at home three times directly after European games, with the other five coming away from home. In comparison, Chelsea have six of their eight fixtures (including play-off games) at home immediately after Europa Conference League matches.

Very much a big season for Postecoglou and Spurs as the Australian looks to achieve his lofty ambitions in north London, all Tottenham supporters will have their fingers crossed that it turns out to be a memorable one at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Premier League matches to be moved due to European involvement:

Saturday, September 28 - Manchester United vs Tottenham

Saturday, October 5 - Brighton & Hove Albion vs Tottenham

Saturday, October 26 - Crystal Palace vs Tottenham

Saturday, November 9 - Tottenham vs Ipswich

Saturday, November 30 - Tottenham vs Fulham

Tuesday, December 3 - Bournemouth vs Tottenham

Saturday, December 14 - Southampton vs Tottenham

Saturday, January 25 - Tottenham vs Leicester

Saturday, February 1 - Brentford vs Tottenham

Tottenham striker decisions made amid Richarlison links and Jonathan David transfer interest

Description

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign a new striker this summer but some of their current forwards could also leave the club in the transfer window.

Ange Postecoglou told football.london last month that he wanted new attackers this summer and Lille's Canadian forward Jonathan David is understood to be among those on the club's shortlist. However, Spurs are also busy this summer with moving players out of the door to continue to revamp the Australian's bloated squad when everyone returns from injury and loan spells.

So what is likely to happen with the current attacking options in Postecoglou's squad? We've taken a look at all of the players who can play as a central striker if required and asked what comes next for them.

Son Heung-min

The club captain, with 27 goal involvements in 35 matches for Tottenham last season with 17 goals and 10 assists, and he's already brushed off any exit talk this summer. Postecoglou has also made it clear publicly that he is looking to build his team around Son, although you would think it's more likely to be as a winger than as a centre forward on the whole next season. STAYS

Richarlison

While the 27-year-old has stated his desire to remain at the north London club, there has been interest in Richarlison from clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

While the £60million Brazilian scored 12 goals in 31 matches for Spurs and impressed when he was fit and sharp last season, football.london understands that Richarlison's injury record, which has seen him miss 20 matches across two seasons with other games also when he was not fit enough to play more than a handful of minutes, means the club would listen to any serious offers that come in this summer for the Brazil international. STAYS IF BIG BID DOESN'T ARRIVE

Troy Parrott

The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international enjoyed a good season of development in the Eredivisie with Excelsior Rotterdam, despite their relegation following the play-offs. Even within a struggling team, Parrott managed 17 goals and five assists in 32 matches.

The young homegrown striker would love the chance to break through at Tottenham but it feels like his chance might have passed him by under Postecoglou.

AZ Alkmaar are keen to keep him in the Netherlands and clubs from the Championship and across Europe are also looking at him after an impressive campaign. Tottenham could look to cash in with a healthy sell-on clause in case he does continue to become a star. LEAVES

Brennan Johnson

Postecoglou has high hopes for the young Wales international, who plays through the centre for his country. For Tottenham he's more of a winger and there is a big expectation within Spurs that the 23-year-old is going to improve on a debut season which brought 10 assists and five goals in the Premier League as he continues to develop and adapt to the Postecoglou way. STAYS

Alejo Veliz

The Argentine scored his first goal for Spurs before heading out on a waste of a loan to Sevilla, where he barely played with just 35 minutes to his name since his move to Spain at the end of the winter transfer window.

The 20-year-old will be impacted by the club's numbers of foreign players next season and another, hopefully much better, loan move is likely to follow. LOAN

Timo Werner

The German can play through the middle and his loan has just been extended for another year by Tottenham so we're not even going to discuss this one. STAYS

Dane Scarlett

Postecoglou likes the 20-year-old and despite a difficult season, which brought a tough spell at Ipswich, he could get the gig as the homegrown back-up striker in the Europa League matches and domestic cup matches in the first half of the season before a January decision is made on what comes next.

Much depends on whether a good loan offer comes in before the end of August for Scarlett, who just needs to play and score goals. STAYS FOR NOW

Will Lankshear

Tottenham have made it clear that they have no intention of selling Lankshear, who netted a remarkable 32 goals last season for the Under-21s. He is likely to get a chance in pre-season to impress Postecoglou and then a decision will be made over whether he continues to develop with the Under-21s and gets some first team minutes in the Europa League, or whether a loan move would be more beneficial with Championship and European sides interested.

We could have also included Jamie Donley in this list but the attacker, also 19, is seen more nowadays as an attacking midfielder. Both he and Lankshear could end up with loan moves at some point in the next season. LOAN

Ivan Toney to Tottenham transfer truth as Ange Postecoglou summer window stance clear - Football.London
Description

Tottenham are unlikely to complete a move to Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer, with the club looking at younger options in their search for a striker.

Spurs have been linked with an interest in the England man this summer, with Brentford boss Thomas Frank admitting that the club could cash in on the player. Toney has one year remaining on his current contract with the Bees.

He is currently representing England at Euro 2024 in Germany but is yet to make an appearance in the competition. The striker was an unused substitute for both group games against Serbia and Denmark, he will be hoping to make it on the pitch when the Three Lions take on Slovenia in their final group game on Tuesday night.

There has been much talk over his future while he has been on international duty. Spurs have been heavily linked amid talk of a deal around the £50 million mark.

However, as reported by football.london the shortlist of forwards compiled by Tottenham for the striker position contains targets for both the present and the future and are aged in their mid-twenties or younger. At the age of 28, Toney doesn’t fall within those parameters, meaning a move for the Brentford man is unlikely this summer.

Instead, Lille’s Jonathan David is high on the shortlist, after scoring 26 goals in 47 matches for the French club last season. Spurs continue to be linked with several other strikers.

Speaking ahead of the game against Slovenia, Toney said that his full concentration was on the Euros before sorting his future. “I can’t predict the future and if I could I wouldn’t be sat here in front of you guys,” he said. “What will be will be and my main focus is playing well and doing well for my country.

I’ve been through it (transfer speculation) before. There’s been lots of talk of me going here, there and everywhere before in my career and I just don’t let outside noise get to me.

“I’m here with England now, and the main focus is doing well for England and whatever happens, happens. I can’t control it.”

Eberechi Eze to Tottenham transfer latest as Crystal Palace haunted by Michael Olise promise

Eberechi Eze to Tottenham transfer latest as Crystal Palace haunted by Michael Olise promise - Football.London
Description

Eberechi Eze remains a target for Tottenham Hotspur this summer. The 25-year-old midfielder continues to be heavily linked with a move to north London following his impressive performances for Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Playing a key role in Oliver Glasner's side, Eze helped steer the Eagles away from a relegation scrap and finish 10th. The England international, who sees his contract at Selhurst Park expire in June 2027, featured 27 times in the English top flight, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists.

While Eze's currently away on international duty at Euro 2024, fortunately, the playmaker's represented by CAA Base – the agency that represents Ange Postecoglou and several Spurs players too. So, with that being said, football.london have rounded up everything you need to know about David and his future at Lille.

'Priority target'

Tottenham have named Eze has a 'priority target' this summer, football.london understands. It's believed that Postecoglou is a big admirer of the Englishman, but it'll be up to Daniel Levy to pay his release clause with Crystal Palace not keen on losing him for anything less.

football.london understands that Spurs are also keen to sign Conor Gallagher, but the Chelsea midfielder has very little intention of leaving Stamford Bridge. He sees his contract in West London expire next year.

Eze makes stance clear!

In May, Eze was asked whether he's playing the best football of his career. Speaking to the Evening Standard, the Crystal Palace ace replied: "Yeah probably. I feel like I’ve got the freedom to play, to do my thing. I’m just happy to be enjoying my football."

Then, when quizzed on his future in South London, Eze added: "I’m not really too bothered about that. I’m just focusing on the present. I want to continue enjoying it and contributing to the team as much as I can. I’m improving every game."

Glasner already haunted by Eze claim...

Last month, Glasner provided an update on the futures of Eze, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Michael Olise. The Crystal Palace boss said: "I am very confident they’ll be here because they have contracts and no one has told me they’ll be leaving.

"I think what we have done is that we have shown them that Crystal Palace have ambition. We have shown them how we want to play, which path we want to go down, which journey we want to ride together.

"They can show their strengths, qualities and personalities and express themselves. They fit together. This is what we can do. If something else happens, then this is football. But Crystal Palace will be able to build a new Selhurst – because it will cost a lot of money."

Ironically, Olise looks set to leave Crystal Palace and join Bayern Munich. One down... Two to go?

Ferdinand makes bold prediction

Rio Ferdinand has backed Eze to join a 'top team'. Speaking on TNT Sports in January 2024, the former Manchester United defender said: "He’s had a unique journey, he has had disappointment in his academy life, been released from clubs but he has found a new pathway and got to this level and is an international play now.

"No disrespect to Palace but this kid can go onto play for one of the top teams. He has got that individual brilliance, he’s got that awareness in his dribbling to keep his head up and bring others into the game.

"I speak to other players who play against him and they say he is such an elusive player, unpredictable but also with size and power to go with it."

Jonathan David, Ivan Toney and the truth about the names on Tottenham striker transfer shortlist

Tottenham are looking to add a forward to Ange Postecoglou's options this summer with Lille striker Jonathan David on the shortlist but Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is not among those who are believed to be on it.

Spurs are looking to increase their attacking outlets for the coming season with the Australian admitting to football.london last month that he needed new recruits in the front third of the pitch. The north London club have been linked with a move for a number of strikers across Europe in recent months as they seek to continue to fill the void left by Harry Kane's departure to Bayern Munich last summer.

"Yeah, absolutely. It's no secret [we need new attacking players]. You saw the way we finished the season," Postecoglou said. "We obviously lost Richy (Richarlison) and Timo [Werner] as well with injuries but we're fairly light in that area. We started last season with Manor [Solomon] and [Ivan] Perisic and we were quite healthy in that front third in terms of numbers, but as the year went on it became pretty evident that we need to bulk up. We're in Europe as well next year so we'll have more games and it's definitely an area of the park we'll need to strengthen."

football.london understands that Tottenham have compiled a shortlist of forwards who fit their profile of signing players for the present and long-term and therefore are at the most aged in their mid-twenties or younger.

Lille striker Jonathan David is one of the names high on that list with the club having followed the Canada international for some time. The Brooklyn-born 24-year-old, currently at the Copa America, netted 26 goals in 47 matches this season for Lille, having hit the same number the previous season for the Ligue 1 outfit and is a player of serious interest to Spurs.

David's contract runs out in 2025 which could mean he is available for a lower fee than in previous summers, with some reports suggesting a £25million price tag rests on his shoulders once he returns from the Copa America next month. The Canada striker took on Tottenham vice-captain Cristian Romero on Friday night at the tournament, with Argentina running out 2-0 victors.

The other names on Tottenham's shortlist have been compiled by technical director Johan Lange and chief scout Rob Mackenzie, with plenty of emphasis on data and analysis, in conjunction with Postecoglou's demands as they look to find a striker who is a perfect fit for the Australian's system.

Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez is not believed to be on the shortlist, despite frequent links to the club. The 23-year-old Mexican netted 23 goals this season in the Eredivisie and was spotted at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium watching a game last season, believed to be as the guest of an agent rather than invited by the club.

Those within Spurs have also distanced themselves from reports of a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney at this stage of the transfer window, while Bologna's Joshua Zirkzee has also been linked but is not a forward that the north London outfit are considering at this point. Juventus star Federico Chiesa, who plays out wide but can also play through the middle in attack as a support striker, is also not thought to be a potential transfer target for Tottenham this summer.

Spurs have certainly scouted plenty of attacking talent over the past 12 months, including RB Leipzig's 24-year-old Belgian forward Lois Openda, who netted 28 goals in 45 matches in the Bundesliga and Champions League last season.

However, the Belgian forward, who can also play out wide, has four years left on his contract and reportedly has an €80million (£67.8million) release clause which becomes active only in 2025 with Leipzig looking for much more this summer if a club were to make an offer.

Another in the expensive but talented category is Swedish star Viktor Gyokeres, who turned 26 this month. The Stockholm-born hitman netted 43 goals in 50 matches for Sporting CP this season. The former Brighton striker came through the same Brommapojkarna academy as Tottenham's Dejan Kulusevski and new signing Lucas Bergvall, who arrives next month from Djurgarden. Sporting have reportedly slapped an £85.8million price tag on the forward though, with interest in him from across Europe's elite clubs.

Spurs have long looked at Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke, who would again fall into that big fee category with reports suggesting he has a £65million release clause that can only be activated by a number of undisclosed clubs. The now 26-year-old netted 21 goals last season for the Cherries and has three years left on his current contract.

Tottenham have previously looked at Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, particularly before the now 24-year-old joined Juventus from Fiorentina, with the club's former managing director of football Fabio Paratici known to be a big fan of the Serbia striker.

Tottenham must also plan for two potential summer eventualities with their attacking options. One is to sign a striker to compete with Richarlison for a spot in Postecoglou's team and the other is to sign someone to replace the Brazilian. While the 27-year-old has stated his desire to remain at the north London club, there has been interest in him from clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

While he netted 12 goals in 31 matches for Spurs and impressed when fit last season, football.london understands that Richarlison's injury record which has seen him miss 20 matches across the past two seasons, with other games when he was not fit enough to play more than a handful of minutes, means the club would listen to any serious offers that come in this summer for the Brazil international.

The striker was signed from Everton for £60million in the summer of 2022 and captain Son Heung-min had to fill in for him on a number of occasions last season.

While the Euros and Copa America will hold up many signings for clubs across the transfer window this summer, with Spurs targeting England and Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze among others, the club are attempting to get some business done earlier as the first team players begin to return to pre-season training from July 6.

"Yeah, look it is important. Last year it certainly benefited us in having a couple of players in early to be with the whole squad," Postecoglou said to football.london about making early signings last month. "Again looking at the schedule this year with international commitments, we're not going to get them all back for the start of pre-season, but if we can get ones in early. It's easier said than done. Everyone wants to get business done early, everyone is keen to bring players in but the reality is that it takes a little bit of time.

"The good thing for us is that we know what we need to do, we've had the plan in place for a while and it's just about now going through that process."

How former Antonio Conte Tottenham favourite is helping ex-Chelsea man Christian Pulisic - Football.London
Description

Former Tottenham set-piece coach Gianni Vio has emerged as a hero for the USA this week during their Copa America opener against Bolivia on Sunday.

When former Chelsea and current AC Milan midfielder Christian Pulisic played his part in a short corner routine less than three minutes into the match against Bolivia, he received the ball from Timothy Weah and the USA captain pushed the ball to the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a ferocious curling effort into the top right corner of the net.

The 25-year-old ran to the bench to celebrate and searched up in the stands before finding who he was looking for and he pointed with both hands to one man in the stands. It was Vio.

The 71-year-old Italian set-piece expert was a popular figure at Spurs in the 2022/23 season as a freelance coach under Antonio Conte, working on the club's attacking set-pieces, before departing last summer under the change of regime. The former banker has spent the past 20 years studying set-pieces, drawing up more than 5,000 routines, and has been credited with improving the fortunes in dead ball situations of various clubs as well as Robert Mancini's Italian side as they won the European Championships in 2021.

Since leaving Tottenham Vio has been working with both Watford in the Championship and with the American national side. After Sunday evening's 2-0 win against Bolivia at the expanded Copa America, Pulisic praised the Italian coach.

"Shout out to Gianni on that one who had a really nice play drawn up," he said in an interview with Fox Sports. "We had the idea if they only brought one out [to defend the corner taker] we'd take that two-on-one and basically the idea was just to shoot at the back post and things can happen. Sure enough, it went in."

In the 2022/23 season with Vio in charge of set-pieces, Spurs scored 16 goals from dead ball situations, the joint second-most in the Premier League with a league-leading 5.9 per cent of their goals coming from set-pieces. Last season, with a different style of football under Ange Postecoglou and with coach Ryan Mason taking over attacking set-piece duties, Spurs scored 11 goals from dead ball situations.

Postecoglou explained last season why it's not an area where he would "feel comfortable" about bringing a specialist into and has never done during his near three-decade coaching career.

"I've never had a specific set-piece coach. I’ve always had someone who's responsible for that. I always think it’s better if that’s somebody who’s a part of the coaching staff because then that’s an extension of how we play our football," he said in March this year. "I don't separate set-pieces from everything else we do, in terms of the team we want to be. It all hopefully links in.

"Here we’ve split the roles between Mile [Jedinak] and Ryan Mason in terms of defensive and attacking set-pieces and they put a lot of work into it with the analysis staff. I'm sure every club does. Some have gone down the specialised route which I understand. It’s just it's not how I work. I always try to create a collective environment for everything we do, so that nothing is separated. I wouldn’t feel comfortable bringing in specialists for one particular area. Just for the way I work more than anything else."

For Postecoglou, it's all about the quality of the set-piece taker and in that regard he has both Pedro Porro and James Maddison able to whip the ball into the opposition box.

"Delivery is vital. Last week wasn’t great. Madders is usually good at them but I thought we had a lot and I know Mase was pretty disappointed with that," said the Tottenham head coach.

"There are always areas you can improve and those guys practise. It does help. As much as the organisation, you still need somebody who can execute. If you’ve got, and I'm going back a bit here, David Beckham on a free-kick, you don’t need a set-piece coach."

Tottenham launch new nostalgic Nike away kit for 2024/25 season which is dividing opinion - Football.London
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have launched a new Nike away kit for the 2024/25 season which harks back to their change kits from decades ago.

The new light blue striped kit for Ange Postecoglou's side brings back a pattern that the club says is synonymous with away kits of the 1980s and was launched with a retro 80s-inspired campaign film featuring first team players Pape Matar Sarr, Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin, Martha Thomas, Celin Bizet, Olga Ahtinen and Pedro Porro.

The new Tottenham away kit brings the club's cockerel crest into the centre of the jersey and the sleeves and neckline includes a yellow and white tape which runs as a theme through all of this season’s shirts.

YouTuber and Spurs fan Danny Aarons also appears in the club's new advert and said: "As a Spurs fan, I love it when we go for classic inspiration in our kits. I remember seeing the blue stripe on the away kit when I was a kid, and it’s so good to see the design updated for today. This is iconic Spurs Away for me – and I can’t wait to see it out on the pitch next season."

The shirt, which has appeared in recent months across social media after leaking early - as they do most seasons, has drawn mixed reactions from the Tottenham fans as is often the case with new tops, with some loving it and some feeling it looks like old wallpaper or pyjamas, or even an Argentina shirt. Others have been critical of the club badge being placed centrally rather than over the heart as is traditional.

With Tottenham set to announce new training wear and sleeve sponsors, they announced - as they did with the new home shirt that "for the 2024/25 season, all of our kits will be sold without the sleeve partner logo, and our training range will be sold without the training wear partner logo. These are excluded from retail inventory for the coming season. Details on Third Kit and training range launches will be communicated in due course".

As with the home tops, the away shirts cost an eye-watering £125 for elite men's and women's tops to replicate what the players wear and £85 for the 'stadium' versions for the fans.
