Description

thetonn: "With Ange wanting everything sorted before pre-season, how worried should we be that not much seems to have happened yet?"

Alasdair says: "I'm not concerned yet. They don't return to pre-season until July 6 so there's a couple of weeks left until that and then they depart for the tour on July 22, so there's plenty of time to get players in for pre-season. It's been pretty quiet across the window so far with the Euros and Copa America putting the brakes on a number of deals that probably have a knock-on effect on others at various clubs. Postecoglou wants stuff done early though so in an ideal world that heats up over the next fortnight."

oJaayCo: "Is Eze now our priority signing?"

Alasdair says: "Eze is definitely one of Spurs' priority targets this summer and Postecoglou is a big admirer. They love him and the fact that he's represented by Base, the agency who represent Postecoglou, Son, Maddison, Porro, Sarr and many more staff and players at the club will help matters. Ultimately with the talk of a release clause it'll be down to Spurs to put the money down that's required, but you would think any real movement is likely to come once his Euros involvement is over."

Gooochie: "Can't see us signing half the players that we reportedly need, certainly not early in the window. It’s the hope that kills you. Do you still think it’s going to plan?"

Alasdair says: "I think they've been laying the foundations with a lot of the early departures in the window, the Timo Werner deal getting extended and Lucas Bergvall coming in for the start of pre-season. The next step of course is to bring more quality in through the doors but to be fair it's been pretty dead across the market so far with the international tournaments going on, other than a couple of clubs trading with each other to help their positions within the profit and sustainability rules."

Jack00: "Do you think Marc Guehi will be a target for Spurs this summer?"

Alasdair says: "Spurs love him but he'll be big money this summer, chased by every top club going and Tottenham aren't really prioritising a centre-back as an immediate big money signing this summer unless someone major left, which is not expected at this point. Also, I'd be stunned if Palace let him go on top of Olise and Eze with their release clauses."

glennrh: "We were told clubs such as Newcastle and Chelsea would have to sell due to PSR. They’ve both made quality signings and we’ve done nothing yet. What’s occurring?"

Alasdair says: "To be fair, Chelsea and Villa seem to have simply done some trading between themselves to help each other's FFP issues with the homegrown nature of the deals. It feels very deliberate with that in mind. As for Newcastle, they brought in a free transfer in Lloyd Kelly, who Spurs looked at but couldn't offer the same amount of football as it seems like he'll get there. It's really been a very quiet market otherwise."

emko: "When do you expect Spurs to make their first signing?"

Alasdair says: "Technically they've already made it in Timo Werner."

martyncoker: "What are your views of the transfer dealings between Villa, Everton, Chelsea and Newcastle which appear to assist each other before 30th June? Does it make a mockery of Spurs trying to be financial sustainable if other clubs find these loopholes?"

Alasdair says: "Unfortunately, that's the problem with rules, people always find loopholes. You would presume they'll try to close that loophole but I'm not sure how you can."

Violet500: "A lot of talk about Ange wanting another centre-back as a priority, I really can’t see us splashing big on an another when we only play with two, Romero and VDV. Obviously we have Dragusin and with the likes of Dorrington, Philips and Vuskovic coming through I can’t see it. Maybe we should be looking at a defender that can play anywhere across the back line Lutsharel Geertruida perhaps?"

Alasdair says: "I've said the opposite to be fair. Ange would like another centre-back but it's not a priority among the signings to be made earlier in the window. Spurs would like sign a defender who can also play at full-back if possible."

seanhallett4: "If we sign Eze, what do you think about him playing in the 10 and Maddison playing as an eight? I don't think we've seen Maddison in a 8 for Spurs but I think it could be done with a solid six behind him."

Alasdair says: "I think in Tottenham's current system under Postecoglou, if they were able to sign Eze then he could play either as one of the numbers eights or as a winger. He's the kind of talent who fits in plenty of roles and the Spurs boss might even tweak the system to allow him to be more of a natural number 10."

elton1: "Any interest in Pedro Neto? Perfect winger for Ange ball?"

Alasdair says: "There certainly has been over the years but I think his injuries have probably brought pause for a few potential suitors. He's just missed so much football in recent seasons."

Annie27: "With the WSL transfer window about to open are you hearing anything about us getting Grace Clinton in on a permanent contract?"

Alasdair says: "Spurs would love to sign Clinton and they've made no real secret of that, so we'll have to see what happens because United also seem keen on keeping hold of the young England international."

Bazzyf83: "I remember the buzz around the ground over Marcus Edwards the night we played Gillingham in the cup. He looked good for the minutes he played that night. Then he left us. Any chance of us bringing him back?"

Alasdair says: "Spurs have certainly considered a return for Marcus Edwards, with their former winger counting as club-trained and available at a cut price from Sporting due to their 35% sell-on clause. They're monitoring that situation and whether it's more beneficial to make the move or simply take a cut of any potential fee. From what I understand the player would be happy to return and has made no secret of his desire to come back to England to play in the Premier League."

JoeyG10: "Spurs have been linked with Jonathan David recently. Is there any truth in him being an option for us?"

Alasdair says: "He's certainly been a player Tottenham have looked at with interest in the past, prior to Postecoglou's arrival, and he's a very good striker so I would imagine that hasn't changed."

bens22: "Is Conor Gallagher still a target? Ange has said he only wants players that genuinely want to be at the club and it's widely reported that Gallagher wants to stay at Chelsea, so it seems unlikely at this point despite coveting him for a while now."

Alasdair says: "It's no secret that Tottenham and Postecoglou really like Gallagher, although with every passing week and Chelsea managing to sort out their very deliberate looking deals with Aston Villa, the previous need to sell the England midfielder appears to shrink. He's always stated that his preference is to stay at Chelsea but they need to offer him a contract for them to happen beyond this coming season. There's a slight difference between a player wanting to stay at a club and then being told they have to leave. That can change things, but if Spurs get any sense that it will not happen and he will remain at Stamford Bridge then they're not going to hang around waiting."

pokey500: "Have you got anything on Chiesa or Zirkzee at the mo?"

Alasdair says: "There doesn't seem to be anything in the Federico Chiesa reports from Italy when it comes to Spurs from what I'm told, certainly at this point. Joshua Zirkzee is a player Tottenham have scouted, although the noise in Serie A seems to suggest that Milan are leading the pack for the Bologna striker, with Manchester United also interested."

What Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou did to make Ian Wright burst out laughing during live TV - Football.London
Description

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou marked his Euro 2024 punditry debut by leaving Ian Wright in stitches. The Arsenal legend was joined on ITV's panel for the Belgium vs Romania game by Postecoglou and Karen Carney, with the topic of England's tournament coming up ahead of kick-off.

The Three Lions have put in two rather disappointing performances against Serbia and Denmark, respectively, though they have still picked up four points. With that in mind, Wright was discussing England ahead of their clash against Slovenia with one particular remark, prompting Postecoglou to chip in with an excellently-timed joke that Wright could not help but laugh at.

"I quite like how calm he looked there," Wright said of Jordan Pickford's interview with ITV. "It's there for everyone to see; we're still in a great position. The way everyone has talked about it, you'd think we need to win this game to stay in the tournament.

"There's a lot of pressure on the guys and it wasn't a great performance and obviously we want to see them play a lot better than that because we know they can. The expectations are high just because of how good the players are we've got and that is why people are disappointed, but at the same time, you can see their in control of everything, and everybody seems calm. It's a big game Tuesday, but everyone should just remain calm."

Presenter Laura Woods then turned to Postecoglou to ask for his thoughts, with the Australian already smiling because of Wright's sudden change in opinion. "I'm laughing because Wrighty wasn't calm on the drive over," he said. Wright, after laughing very loudly, then responded: "Don't out me, Ange, don't out me."

"He was just panicking a bit more in the car than he is now," the Spurs boss joked. "I think experience does count in this scenario. I think the key is they've still got to stay in the present, we've had four points in the past, and things turned out ok."

As has become commonplace in his Tottenham press conference, Postecoglou simply cannot resist either a sarcastic joke or tongue-in-cheek jab at another, with Wright facing the full brunt of that.

'I think it was vs Tottenham' - Ian Wright has sly dig at Ange Postecoglou in England message - Football.London
Description

Ange Postecoglou is making his Euro 2024 debut on Saturday evening. The Tottenham Hotspur boss was signed up by ITV for the European Championships in Germany but Spurs fans have had to wait to see him in action.

Following the end of the Premier League season - and a post-season friendly in his homeland of Australia - Postecoglou took a well-deserved break. But his punditry debut has come as Belgium take on Romania in Group E on Saturday night.

And he was in fine form early on in the piece, having a little dig at Ian Wright for not being calm about England's situation, following the Three Lions' 1-1 draw with Denmark on Thursday night.

That draw led to plenty of criticism of Gareth Southgate's side, despite the fact a win in the final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday will see Englsand top Group C.

But while Postecoglou was accused by Arsenal legend Wright of "outing him" for his lack of calm over England's situation, Wright got his own back moments later.

When discussing England's selection dilemma for the Slovenia game, fellow pundit Karen Carney brought up the topic of John Stones playing in midfield for England, like he has done at domestic level for Manchester City. She said: "I think I'd like to see John Stones play the role he did for Man City, going from the back and going into midfield."

And Wright agreed. He followed up: "What Karen's saying about John Stones and how briliant he was going through the pitch from centre-half, I think it was against Tottenham I've seen him do that well."

Postecoglou has become fondly known for calling everyone "mate" since he has been in England with Spurs and he did not let us down by interrupting Wright and saying: "Thanks, mate" as if to thank the Arsenal man for bringing up the fact Stones and City had the better of his team this sesaon.

City beat Spurs twice in 2023/24 - once in the Premier League and once in the FA Cup fourth round - with one draw between the two sides in the league too.

Postecoglou's transfer priorities, Eze, Chiesa and when Tottenham stars return for pre-season - Football.London
Description

The summer transfer window is yet to burst into life in the Premier League with the Euros and Copa America slowing down progress for clubs like Tottenham Hotspur.

The financial books close at the end of this month when it comes to the profit and sustainability rules which have already seen clubs docked points and fined, and that is expected to result in a flurry of transfer movement in late June with clubs like Chelsea and Aston Villa already trading between themselves as they seek to remain on the right side of the Premier League's regulations.

Tottenham are in a healthier position in that respect but Ange Postecoglou is seeking further additions to bolster the squad for its return to pre-season training which football.london understands is pencilled in for July 6, with the first team non-internationals come back to Hotspur around that weekend.

Postecoglou has said he wants new arrivals in all departments across the squad, with players like England internationals Eberechi Eze, Ivan Toney and Conor Gallagher all linked with Spurs in recent weeks while at the Euros, and the Australian also has to decide on a new assistant head coach after Chris Davies' departure to Birmingham City for his first managerial role.

Full confirmed list of Tottenham ins and outs as Ange Postecoglou begins summer transfer rebuild - Football.London
Description

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou and technical director Johan Lange are currently plotting the club's summer transfer rebuild under the Australian.

Spurs have already got their business up and running the summer transfer window, which opened on June 14 and will close on August 30 at 11pm UK time. Tottenham's plans have been in place for months now with plenty of moving parts in terms of incoming and outgoing players.

The club are looking to build on Postecoglou's first campaign in charge which brought an improved fifth-place finish in the Premier League with more goals scored, fewer conceded and three consecutive Manager of the Month awards for the Australian at the start of the campaign.

"You always understand that things can change really quickly but we've got a plan in place that I'm really comfortable with in terms of incomings and outgoings," Postecoglou said of the transfer plans he and the club had after the club's post-season friendly in Melbourne last month. "Whether that all comes together you just never know but having clarity about what we need to do I think helps the process."

Plenty of players have been linked with Tottenham this summer and many within Postecoglou's squad have been tipped to head towards the exit door.

football.london has pulled together Spurs' confirmed first team transfers, both in and out, thus far:

Arrivals

Timo Werner - RB Leipzig - Loan with an option to buy

Lucas Bergvall - Djurgarden - £8.5m (deal agreed in February to go through on July 1)

Departures

Eric Dier - Bayern Munich - End of contract and loan

Ivan Perisic - Hajduk Split - End of contract and loan

Ryan Sessegnon - End of contract

Japhet Tanganga - End of contract

Tanguy Ndombele - Mutual termination of contract

Rodrigo Bentancur releases further apology after Son comment with Tottenham and FA response

Rodrigo Bentancur releases further apology after Son comment with Tottenham and FA response - Football.London
Description

Rodrigo Bentancur has issued a further apology after the offensive comment he claims was only aimed at his Tottenham captain Son Heung-min.

During a televised interview ahead of the Copa America, the Spurs midfielder attempted to make a joke when a reporter asked for a shirt from one of his team-mates. The reporter asked: "Can you get me the shirt from the Korean?" to which Bentancur asked "Sonny?" and the journalist said "Or any other champion?". Bentancur replied: "Or any cousin of Sonny, they all look more or less the same!" to which the reporter replied "Yes, of course!!"

The comment was taken as a racial slur and sparked outrage throughout the Korean community and outside of it, and Kick It Out, the organisation which seeks to end racism and discrimination in sport, said this week that it had "received a significant number of reports about Rodrigo Bentancur's comments regarding his Tottenham team-mate Son Heung-min. These reports have already been sent to the club and relevant authorities. We recognise Bentancur has acknowledged the offence caused, however it highlights a wider issue that heavily affects East Asian and wider communities. We’ll be seeking to address these broader issues in the coming season".

The FA are also investigating the comments with the possibility of a charge and potential ban for the Uruguayan. Spurs are dealing with the issue internally, although much of that will be governed by what the FA decide, and now Bentancur has taken to Instagram again with a more permanent post about the situation after a issuing a temporary 24-hour Instagram Story apology soon after the interview became public and sparked a reaction.

"I would like to communicate to all fans and everyone who follows us that after my interview where I referred to Son and no one else, I have spoken to him and, logically given our deep friendship, he understands it was only an unfortunate misunderstanding. All has been clarified and solved with my friend," he said.

"If someone felt offended because of my words through this media tool I would like to offer my sincere apologies. But I also would like you to know that never, never I referred to anyone else. Only to Son and for that reason I’ve never had the intention to offend directly or indirectly anyone. A big hug and all my respect to everyone."

Son had responded with his own statement on the matter in an Instagram Story post on Thursday, saying: "I've spoken with Lolo. He made a mistake, he knows this and has apologised. Lolo would not mean to ever intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed at all.

"We're past this, we're united, and we will be back together in pre season to fight for our club as one. Sonny."

Spurs also released a statement that day, saying: "Following a comment from Rodrigo Bentancur in an interview video clip and the player’s subsequent public apology, the club has been providing assistance in ensuring a positive outcome on the matter. This will include further education for all players in line with our diversity, equality and inclusion objectives.

"We fully support that our captain Sonny feels that he can draw a line under the incident and that the team can focus on the new season ahead. We are extremely proud of our diverse, global fanbase and playing squads. Discrimination of any kind has no place at our club, within our game or within wider society."

The absolute bargain transfer someone is going to grab from Tottenham this summer

The absolute bargain transfer someone is going to grab from Tottenham this summer - Football.London
Description

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could have his pick of clubs this summer as his performances at the Euros continue to raise his profile.

As the likes of Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and captain Harry Kane struggled to push their team on, the 28-year-old Dane was named man of the match for his performance against England in Thursday night's 1-1 draw in Group C in Frankfurt. Hojbjerg was a constant thorn in the side of Gareth Southgate's team and was also an attacking threat throughout the European Championships encounter.

The experienced Spurs midfielder had 108 touches, made 83 passes, took five shots, made six tackles, three interceptions and two clearances and won two aerial duels. Hojbjerg had the ball more than any other player on the pitch on the night by a long way and used it well on the whole.

The Denmark international also earned praise after his country's opening encounter against Slovenia and once his Euros journey is completed this summer he will become a man in demand in the transfer market.

Ange Postecoglou only handed Hojbjerg eight Premier League starts last season, with the midfielder having started almost every game in previous seasons since his arrival at the club in 2020 under Jose Mourinho. Postecoglou still repeatedly turned to the Dane from the bench last season in order to steady the team late in matches and he made 39 appearances across all competitions for the squad.

He did not contribute any goals or assists, despite having managed to do so in previous campaigns with five goals and seven assists last season alone.

The problem for Hojbjerg is that he does not quite fit the Postecoglou system so he finds himself on the market this summer, particularly with just a year left on his contract after 184 appearances for the club.

Hojbjerg has often divided the Tottenham fans, with his technique inconsistent and ranging from the excellent to the rushed and his decision-making occasionally erratic, but he has been an underrated player within the club for much of his time in N17, often leading them through tough moments in games and showing the energy and stamina required late into games to drive on the team.

Hojbjerg's agent Luca Puccinelli spoke to social media transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano this week and explained the next steps for his client.

"This year I started working with Pierre and it was a great satisfaction for me to be able to convince a top player for the project I had for him. Pierre has already experienced a lot in his career, he has had great seasons at Tottenham with top coaches like Mourinho and then Conte last year. In the national team he is a big leader as well," he said.

"A player like him will surely be part of a club with great ambition or project because he is not just a strong player, but with a character made to fight for important things every year. Pierre feel comfortable in the pressure to win and I am working in this sense.

"He is telling me that every year he dream of trophies in the end of the season and don’t like to play for nothing. This is his mindset, this is the mission.

"I am working on the many requests that we have already received, yes; but we will analyse all the possibilities after the Euros, during the holidays when we will spend some time together and then look forward to the next chapter.

"The national team is giving him back his lost serenity now. I’m 100% sure that whoever signs Hojbjerg will get a bargain."

There's little doubt that with a year left on his contract and his fee not being sky-high, some team among those interested in the Premier League, Italy, Spain, Turkey and elsewhere will get themselves a bargain buy in the all-action Dane.

Tottenham transfer window predicted as Ivan Toney signs and £60m double Chelsea deal completed

Tottenham transfer window predicted as Ivan Toney signs and £60m double Chelsea deal completed - Football.London
Description

The transfer window has been open for a week but Tottenham are yet to make any moves. The club did extend Timo Werner's loan for another season, but that was confirmed before the transfer window officially opened.

International tournaments like Euro 2024 and the Copa America will prolong things when it comes to transfers, with more business likely to be done once they are over.

Spurs are likely to be one of the busier clubs in the summer transfer window, with a number of players expected to depart as well as Ange Postecoglou looking to bring new faces in to strengthen his squad.

But what will the transfer window look like once all is said and done? football.london writers predict what will happen for Postecoglou and Spurs...

Lee Wilmot

We are likely to see plenty of business completed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer. A number of players have already departed the club, but more will follow them out of the exit door.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Emerson Royal, Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence, Joe Rodon, Bryan Gil, Giovani Lo Celso and Oliver Skipp will all leave, opening up plenty of spaces in the squad for the overhaul Postecoglou desperately wants and needs.

Spurs need a striker and I'm tipping them to bring Ivan Toney to the club from Brentford for a fee of around £50million. He'll add to their homegrown numbers too, as opposed to someone like Santiago Gimenez.

They'll add much-needed reinforcements in defence and midfield too. Conor Gallagher has long been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and he is another homegrown talent who will add much-needed depth to the squad. And, given Chelsea are looking to sell, I would not be surprised to see Trevoh Chalobah switch west London for north London too in a £60million double deal.

I think there could be one more too and I'm going to plump for Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan. He'll put himself in the shop window during Euro 2024 and with his contract due to expire in 2025 and his versatility to play in the backline or in midfield, he could be the perfect bargain signing out of nowhere.

Alasdair Gold

Tottenham need to strengthen their squad with quality and numbers while also replacing those players who head out of the door. Bearing in mind there were will be a large number of departures it's going to be a busy time in N17.

Spurs will sign a striker, winger, a midfielder or two, a full-back and likely a centre-back who can also fill in as a full-back on the other side.

Ange Postecoglou looks for very specific players and a statement signing this summer would be one he really wants rather than anyone the club or fans want. If that is Eberechi Eze then go all out for him and make the statement of paying what it takes to back the Australian.

Hojbjerg, Lo Celso, Emerson, Spence, Reguilon and Rodon will all be among the first team players heading out of the door this summer and the squad will need bolstered accordingly.

Sam Truelove

Tottenham could have a really good second season under Ange Postecoglou if the right players are brought in. Firstly, if I was Daniel Levy, I would look to move a number of fringe players on first to raise money for incomings. Joe Rodon, Emerson Royal, Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Bryan Gil and Giovani Lo Celso can all be sold if suitors are found and the price is right.

If Emerson does depart a new right-back will be needed and AS Monaco's Vanderson looks good value for money. With Pedro Porro firmly Postecoglou's first choice, there would be no rush to play Vanderson week in week out so signing the 23-year-old makes sense.

I would then sign a central midfielder and striker. Conor Gallagher looks the ideal signing if Levy is willing to do business with Chelsea. The England international is a class act and would offer quality and experience in Spurs' midfield. Up top I would look to sign Ivan Toney. The Brentford man has proven he has what it takes to score goals in the Premier League and, like Gallagher, is about to enter the final year of his contract so could be available for a decent price.

If I had to pick a wildcard signing it would be Raphinha from Barcelona. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move back to the Premier League and would flourish in Postecoglou's system. With Barcelona's well documented financial problems, Levy may fancy his chances of striking a favourable deal with the Spanish giants.

Tom Coley

This feels like a big transfer window for Tottenham. They got last summer pretty much spot on but must back that up now and give Postecoglou more tools to work with. They need to add depth and quality to the first team in order to compete in Europe as well as at the top of the Premier League.

Players that can bring plenty to the table are Chelsea duo Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah. They are two names already admired by Spurs and rightly so. Between them they provide versatility and flexibility but also plenty of skill in and out of possession. They are able to follow instructions but also bring individual innovation, all for a pretty decent price.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see one or both of them end up in north London. Elsewhere Spurs could do with addressing the centre forward spot. Richarlison had a purple patch last season but in truth Harry Kane was never replaced to any extent.

With Ivan Toney slipping down the list for Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United, he is an ideal option and will be available for less and less the longer the window goes on due to his contract situation. Expect the eventual price to be closer to £45million rather than the £80million that has been quoted previously.

Ensuring that there is backup for Destiny Udogie is also important. Left-back is an interesting one across the league but Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez and Wolves ace Rayan Ait-Nouri are certainly worth watching. Spurs could do a lot worse than looking at this group.

Jake Stokes

Ange Postecoglou will be eager to strengthen his Tottenham Hotspur squad this summer and build upon a brilliant debut season in charge.

To transform the Lilywhites into a top-four Premier League side, the Australian will need to sign a pair of new full-backs to deputise Destiny Udogie on the left and Pedro Porro on the right. Antonee Robinson would be a good contrasting option at left-back, while Archie Gray comes in as a jack-of-all-trades.

While the Leeds United ace may be a midfielder at heart, he's regularly featured at right-back last season. It would be nice to see Tottenham sign a new centre-back too, but it'll be difficult to find somebody willing to simply cover for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven – not to mention Radu Dragușin, who'll also be waiting in line.

Finally, I anticipate Spurs signing either a striker or a left-winger depending on where Postecoglou wants to use Son Heung-min. Whoever the north Londoners bring in to bolster their attack, it must be a top player. Somebody with quality who's ready to take the Premier League by storm.

I think Nico Williams would be a great signing. Crysencio Summerville would've been an exciting option, but Tottenham have already invested in Timo Werner stocks.

Leeds United transfer stance on Archie Gray explained amid Tottenham summer interest

Leeds United transfer stance on Archie Gray explained amid Tottenham summer interest - Football.London
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are among most of the Premier League and Europe's top clubs in having an interest in Leeds teenager Archie Gray but it will not be an easy task for anyone looking to sign him this summer.

football.london reported this week that Spurs have a strong interest in the youngster, who only turned 18 in March but played 52 times last season for Daniel Farke's side as they just missed out on promotion to the Premier League, gaining 90 points in the Championship but losing in the play-off final to Southampton.

Gray's versatility meant he started the season in attacking, defensive and box-to-box central midfield roles, where he spent much of his academy years, but then went on to become a highly effective right-back for Leeds, keeping the then on-loan Spurs man Djed Spence out of the team in the first half of the campaign.

That ability to play in both midfield and right-back would mark out Gray as a well-rounded candidate to take on Ange Postecoglou's inverted right-back role., which would only add to Tottenham's interest.

There would be plenty of competition for the teenager though and with a long contract until 2028, after only signing a new deal in January, some have placed a £50million tag on him. All eyes would be on how much money the Yorkshire club needs to raise after missing out on the riches of promotion to the Premier League.

football.london asked Beren Cross, who covers Leeds United week in, week out for Leeds Live, what he thought about the situation with Gray this summer.

"Archie Gray is one of the other players to come out of last season with a high profile. The 18-year-old was named Championship Young Player of the Season. You can see the trend," he said. "The difference with Gray is his age and importance to the fan base. His name is iconic in Leeds circles, as the grandson of Frank and great-nephew of Eddie, and as a product of the academy, he bleeds white.

"While supporters understand money needs to be raised this summer, they would rather sell every player in the squad before parting with Gray. While [Crysencio] Summerville’s aspirations and trajectory are accepted, at 18, there is belief Gray can have more years with his boyhood club to develop before flying the nest.

"There is no hiding the fact Gray can become a generational England talent. Gareth Southgate has already started talking about him after one full season of senior football. Any fee raised for him this summer could feasibly be doubled in two more years, if Leeds can just hold on. Marathe and the board know they will face an almighty backlash if Gray is sold this summer."

Description

Tottenham have two and a half months to shape Ange Postecoglou's squad to fit the needs of a packed season with raised expectations.

The transfer window has been open for a week and as of this moment Spurs and Chelsea are the only sides that finished in the Premier League's top six last season to have signed anyone, with the north London side bringing in Timo Werner on loan for a full season and the Blues signing Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer.

None of the top six have paid out a transfer fee yet and beyond that only Bournemouth, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and West Ham have done so with Newcastle bringing in Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer. A few clubs have made loan deals permanent after options to buy were triggered.

Spurs have mainly been busy in moving players out of the club so far with five first team players heading out of the door, while Lucas Bergvall will arrive next month after his £8.5million move from Djurgarden.

Tottenham technical director Johan Lange worked with Postecoglou and chief scout Rob Mackenzie on a plan for incoming and outgoing players this summer which has been in place for months, with top targets and other highly-rated players in case they become available. Some are involved at international competitions which prevents them signing for anyone for a while but Postecoglou told football.london last month that he is keen to at least get some faces through the door in time for pre-season early next month.

We've taken a look at what Postecoglou's squad needs to look like in each department by the time the Premier League summer window shuts on August 30 at 11pm.

Goalkeepers

This is probably the one area of the squad that does not require an addition unless a bargain that is too good to pass up comes along. Otherwise Postecoglou has Guglielmo Vicario firmly in place as Tottenham's main man between the sticks with experienced back-up from Fraser Forster and a homegrown player in Brandon Austin with the ink still drying on his new five-year contract.

A decision might have to be made on Alfie Whiteman in the final year of his deal in the wake of Austin's long contract extension and whether he heads out on loan or finds a new chapter in his career. Spurs have plenty of young goalkeeping talent coming through in the shape of Josh Keeley, who trained with Republic of Ireland's senior squad this month after stepping across from the U21s, and Luca Gunter, who was in fine form for Tottenham's double silverware-lifting development side in the second half of the season.

With four goalkeepers aged 25 or above and at least two young stoppers learning their trade, with potential loan moves for them, Spurs are well stocked in this department.

Full-backs

In contrast, the full-back position will be a busy one for Spurs in the market this summer as this window rolls on. Ryan Sessegnon has already been released and Sergio Reguilon and Djed Spence are not in Postecoglou's plans following loan spells at Brentford and Genoa respectively, with Tottenham looking for permanent moves for both. The Spaniard is in the final 12 months of his contract, while Spence has three years to go on his.

Emerson Royal has interest from AC Milan, Flamengo and Saudi Pro League sides and Postecoglou is willing to let the Brazilian go should the right offer come in.

That would leave Tottenham with only one natural inverted full-back on either side in Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro, with Ben Davies and Micky van de Ven able to fill in on the left if required.

The indications in the past month have been that Spurs will likely bring in one new full-back who can fill the inverted role perfectly this season and sign a versatile centre-back who can also play as a full-back to help cover the other side.

With Van de Ven and Davies able to do so on the left - with the Welshman, one of Spurs' few experienced players, tipped to remain at the club this summer - that perhaps lends itself to signing a right-sided centre-back who can play as a right-back, although the early indications appear to be that Tottenham are looking for a centre-back who is comfortable on the left as a signing later in the summer.

Monaco's right-back Vanderson has been linked as a potential Emerson replacement, although £40million on a player likely to be behind Porro at least to begin with would seem a stretch, even for a 22-year-old. Spurs already spent more than that on the Spaniard so it could be that more realistically they spend an Udogie-sized fee - less than £20million - on a new full-back who can develop and challenge the current players in the role with the bigger money spent elsewhere in the squad.

Tottenham really like Leeds' 18-year-old wonderkid Archie Gray, as do most of the Premier League and Europe's top clubs, and have scouted him heavily. The Yorkshire club need to raise funds this summer, with a £50million price tag mooted for a midfielder who has looked very much at home as a right-back. Again that's a lot of money, although Gray can play in so many positions and is seen as a star in the making so would be an investment.

The problem this summer would not only be the competition for his signature but also Leeds' reluctance to part with a player they believe will only increase in value in the coming seasons.

Centre-backs

There's already been activity in this department with Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga both set to be released at the end of their contracts this month. Joe Rodon will also leave the club this summer with all three promoted clubs Ipswich, Southampton and Leicester City interested among others in the Premier League, as well as Championship side Leeds, where he spent last season on loan.

Spurs have three big options in this position now with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin, who is currently starring at Euro 2024 with Romania, while Davies can also cover in the position, with young defenders Ashley Phillips and Alfie Dorrington well regarded. The latter is expected to be back from his hamstring surgery in August.

Romero was linked with Real Madrid by one report in Argentina but Tottenham quickly shut down any such talk about the vice-captain departing.

Postecoglou would like one more senior centre-back to arrive this summer as part of his squad building although as football.london has previously reported, a new player in that position is not seen as a priority in the transfer window and is more likely to be something addressed later on when the squad situation is clearer.

Bologna's 22-year-old defender Riccardo Calafiori is among the defenders Spurs have looked at but with a gradually rising price tag, currently around £35million, and the position not being a priority, a move for the Italy international would appear unlikely at this stage in the window.

He does fit the mould of centre-backs though that Spurs have been looking for as he can also play at left-back, similar to Hiroki Ito, who ended up going to Bayern Munich from Stuttgart. Another similarly versatile young centre-back Tottenham have scouted this season is Middlesbrough's Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year Rav van den Berg. The 19-year-old has indicated a desire to stay at the Championship club but also admitted that his future may not be in his hands.

Spurs strongly considered signing Adarabioyo and Kelly in the past year as good level free agents and previously when they both had a fee, but both players moved to clubs where they felt they would get more regular football.

Across London, Tottenham are certainly not alone in greatly admiring England international Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace and have looked at Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah in recent seasons but neither will come at the price tag that fits the lower priority placed on the position. Guehi is wanted by most of the Premier League's top sides while Chalobah would only move for week in, week out football, otherwise why leave Chelsea?

This is a position to keep an eye on later in the transfer window.

Midfield

This is definitely one of the two departments that Tottenham are prioritising this summer for Postecoglou. Tanguy Ndombele has agreed a mutual termination of his contract with the club after half a decade, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is likely to be the highest profile departure from this department in the squad, with his performances at the Euros only helping Spurs to keep his price tag high despite the Dane being in the final year of his contract.

Giovani Lo Celso could also fetch a similar price if he impresses at the Copa America this summer, with 12 months left on his deal as well. The trouble for Tottenham is that they will not be recouping that money for either player until later in the window during their tournament involvement.

Oliver Skipp wants regular first team football next season but the 23-year-old's club-trained status - a rarity at Tottenham - might ensure Postecoglou keeps him around for now and gives him game time in the many Europa League fixtures Spurs will face in the first half of the season at least.

Postecoglou then has Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr in the midfield and knows more are required to cover the amount of games Spurs will have this season.

The very talented Bergvall will arrive this summer and is being tipped to star for the club but will need the first half of the season at least to adapt to the increase pace and physicality of the Premier League. The 18-year-old will be involved in the first team from the off with Postecoglou excited about his ability to play as one of his number eights, while also versatile enough to fill in elsewhere.

The Australian has also taken a shine to academy midfielder Tyrese Hall and the 18-year-old is expected to be used heavily in pre-season as the Spurs boss looks to increase his development and pathway towards the first team. Jamie Donley is also well-regarded within the club and is the subject of plenty of interest in a loan move. The 19-year-old could be given that to help continue his huge progress in the past 12 months if that is preferred over further first team minutes here and there in Europe.

Postecoglou needs further additions in midfield, with England internationals Conor Gallagher and Eberechi Eze both on the club's wish list. The former is currently showing very little intention of leaving Chelsea, while Spurs would likely have to pay the full sum for the latter to show their intent with talk of a potential release clause, although said to be a complicated one, with Palace not keen on losing him for anything less.

It's worth noting that Eze is represented by CAA Base, the agency who also represent Postecoglou, Son, Porro, Sarr and many other staff and players within Tottenham and have had strong links with chairman Daniel Levy for years.

There is also Atalanta's Ederson, with the 24-year-old a rising force in Serie A and having won the Europa League with the Italian side. The media in Italy claim Spurs were knocked back in January when asking about the midfielder, while Atalanta's Champions League football next season lessens their need to sell and could also be a draw for the player to stick around.

Tottenham have also been linked with Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White in recent months as another homegrown attacking midfielder option, although links with Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie this summer are not believed to have any basis to them.

Spurs will have a number of midfield options on their radar, all approved by Postecoglou, who knows that he needs signings that really make his system work with the midfield the biggest issue as last season wore on.

He needs at least five or six players who can play in the number eight role and three or four who can be utilised as the number six, although the Australian will tell you that they should all be able to play in either role.

Attackers

This is an area where Postecoglou wants new faces to hit the goals that his teams are built upon. Ivan Perisic will leave the club permanently this month at the end of his contract while Bryan Gil is available for transfer as he seeks regular football after failing to break through at Tottenham since arriving three years ago.

There is a hope that Manor Solomon will be able to take part at some point as pre-season progresses although the complex nature of his knee injury last season and the setbacks and surgeries mean the club will take it slowly and cautiously with the winger before increasing his involvement in the months ahead.

Troy Parrott is expected to get a move this summer, likely a permanent one, despite his strong season in the Eredivisie with Excelsior Rotterdam, while Dane Scarlett could get more game time this campaign for Spurs with the Europa League fixtures. Argentinean striker Alejo Veliz will head out on another loan and Postecoglou will also decide what comes next for Will Lankshear, who netted 32 goals for the U21s last season, with Spurs having no intention of selling the striker, who has lots of interest in the Championship and across Europe in a loan move.

With Werner back on board for another year at least and Richarlison keen to improve on last season, which brought 12 goals and four goals in 31 matches around knee, groin and hamstring problems, there is also skipper Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson and Dejan Kulusevski as attacking options. There are high hopes in particular for Johnson to build on his 15 goal involvements in his debut season as he adapted to the club and Postecoglou's system.

There is also the gifted Mikey Moore, who turns 17 in August, with Postecoglou keen to give the teenager opportunities this season with the mass of fixtures ahead.

The Australian wants more recruits though in the attacking areas, something he admitted to football.london was a priority for him out in Melbourne last month.

Spurs have looked at strikers galore since Lange's arrival with Brentford's Ivan Toney, Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke, Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez, Bologna's Joshua Zirkzee, RB Leipzig's Lois Openda and Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres among a longer list of forwards scouted and the data crunched to see whether they fit Postecoglou's system.

Gyokeres in particular is set to be on the expensive side with reports in Portugal currently suggesting Sporting would be unwilling to allow the Swede to leave for much less than his £85m release clause with plenty of clubs including Arsenal interested. Barcelona's Victor Roque and Sevilla's Youssef En-Nesyri are among the many strikers linked in the Spanish media, while Stuttgart's Serhou Guirassy has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, including Spurs and West Ham, with a release clause reported to be just £15million.

Wingers have also been looked at, including 19-year-old Desire Doue at Rennes, who can play out wide or centrally in midfield, with his brother Guela, a right-back at the club, also linked with Tottenham by the French media. Closer to home, Eze can of course play out wide as one of his roles.

Barcelona's Raphinha has been admired by Spurs in recent seasons while the club have even considered a return for Marcus Edwards, with their former winger counting as club-trained and available at a cut price from Sporting due to their 35% sell-on clause.

Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams is a player of interest to most of Europe's top clubs, not least Tottenham, and his stock is only rising further with his performances for Spain at the Euros. The 21-year-old reportedly has a £46.5million release clause in the new contract he signed six months ago, which there would be a rush of the continent's top clubs looking to trigger should he indicate a desire to leave Athletic Bilbao. However he has not done so at this stage nor are the La Liga club worried about losing him.

Spurs could well look for further versatile attackers who can play out wide or through the centre as Richarlison, Son, Werner and Johnson can all do but ultimately the key is to get further quality in through the door with so many games on the horizon and last season's injury woes still fresh in the mind with Postecoglou likely to need three players available to play in each of the three attacking slots.

Postecoglou needs a bigger, stronger squad to handle all of the extra fixtures in the coming season and it's down to the club to deliver that for him.
