Jamie Carragher tears into 'disgraceful' Spurs trio in Sky Sports rant after Liverpool collapse

Jamie Carragher has labelled the Tottenham Hotspur midfield a 'disgrace' following their performance in the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Spurs relinquished their one-goal first-leg advantage after Arne Slot's side were rampant in the second-half to compound a miserable evening at Anfield. Liverpool booked their place in the Carabao Cup final in March, where they will place Newcastle United, after goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk - with three of those coming upon the restart.

The visitors didn't land a glove on the current holders and couldn't muster a shot on target as they failed to build on their first-leg lead. Hopes of silverware for Ange Postecoglou's side will now rest on progression in the FA Cup, where they travel to Aston Villa this weekend, and in the Europa League.

Carragher was critical of the lack of fight shown from the Tottenham midfield as the encounter became too easy for the hosts, who cruised into the Wembley showpiece.

"When I look at those three midfield players, they're a disgrace," he said. "No matter who your manager is, you're playing a semi-final, you get on the ball, if you're a Tottenham man, first 15 minutes, half-an-hour, Liverpool will be on the ball but get after them, be aggressive. Even if you're camped in your own half, it was still so easy.

"We've criticised Ange Postecoglou - called him naive at times - that looks like a team that was picked before the game that said; 'right, we're going to make it difficult for Liverpool, powerful players, three proper central midfield players'. I thought that was a team to stop Liverpool, that's what most teams do, but those midfielders didn't even put a challenge in. It was shocking.

"I'm not just saying this to try make a headline, but I'd think of a cup tie Liverpool played in the FA Cup, Accrington Stanley. Liverpool didn't play their best team, don't get me wrong, but they gave more - that's not right," Carragher added.

Ange Postecoglou had plenty of questions to answer at his press conference after Tottenham's 4-0 defeat at Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg and we've got the full transcript below.

Liverpool scored just after the half-hour mark when a Mohamed Salah cross bounced through to the back post where the unmarked Cody Gakpo half-volleyed home. The home side were then handed a penalty early in the second half after Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky brought down Darwin Nunez in the box and Salah smashed home the resulting spot kick into the top left corner.

A third Liverpool goal arrived on 75 minutes when they found space through the middle and a sweeping move ended with Dominik Szoboszlai tapping home. Virgil van Dijk headed in from a corner to complete the scoring.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Postecoglou after the match, including about a poor performance, a new injury for Richarlison and the debuts of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel. Here is the full transcript with every word the Spurs head coach said in his post-match press conference.

Not one shot on target, did the players meet your expectations?

Look, it's fair to say we didn't get to the levels we need to tonight. It was always going to be a big challenge for us. They're obviously a very good side and in a great moment with all their players in very good form, very settled. But for us to give ourselves an opportunity, we had to be a lot more aggressive with and without the ball and we weren't. We allowed them to control the game and dictate where it was played. In the end, they were too good for us.

How damaging was that result for the season?

It's disappointing. It was a great opportunity for us to get to a final. We didn't give ourselves a chance to take the opportunity which is probably more disappointing. Ultimately it's an opportunity for further learning and for us to atone for that by making amends with a strong performance on Sunday.

What was wrong with Richarlison?

It looks like his calf. It didn't look too good after the game, so probably one to add to the list.

What did you make of the two debutants?

Yeah they did OK. Kevin was really positive, as was Mathys. It's hard, you know, throwing guys in after their first training sessions, it's not ideal. That's part of our dilemma at the moment of trying to get some fluency and consistency but also knowing we have to keep tinkering with the starting line up to account for everything going on. But I thought they acquitted themselves well.

Your whole ethos is for your players is to be brave, how disappointing is it that on such a big night they weren't?

Yeah it is disappointing. It’s not the fact that we have come here and lost. It’s a difficult place to come to and they are in a great moment right now. It would be difficult for anyone to come here. I would have liked us to play more like who we are than we did tonight. There is a lesson in there for us for sure that if we kind of veer away from that it almost becomes impossible for us.

Can you be judged fairly with so many injuries?

I don’t worry about being judged or who is judging. I think ultimately my responsibility is to try to get the players I have to perform to the best of their abilities and to tackle the problems we have got at the moment and everyone knows the challenges we’ve got.

It’s disappointing tonight because we had an opportunity to get to a final and they don’t come around too often so to let that slip as I said is disappointing but probably more disappointing is we didn’t play in the manner we wanted to and we know we can which may have given us an opportunity to get through. There are some learnings in there for us and we will take them away.

Jamie Redknapp said on TV 'I cannot remember a team going down in my lifetime with less of a fight' — is that fair?

You’re asking me, ask Jamie. He has obviously made the comment. I know people get really excited by things like that. People are on TV to give opinions and that’s what they do. That’s their job. My job is not to scan the TV or the commentary on our games. My job is to manage this football club and whatever people think or don’t think is kind of irrelevant. It doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t really put any sort of emphasis on who we are and what we are trying to do. At the end of the day everybody is allowed to have an opinion. Everyone is allowed to express that opinion. My view is I don’t really need to respond to that or be affected by that because I don’t care. Whether it’s Jamie Redknapp or anyone else. I don’t care. It doesn’t worry me. It doesn’t bother me.

How good are Liverpool, are they the best team you've come across in your two seasons in England?

I don't really assess opposition teams [like that]. They're a good side and they're in a great moment. They're flying in all competition, all their players are in great physical condition, their top players are in the peak of their powers and they're in a great spot. They're a compelling side. They are where they are because of their form and consistency.

Despite all the injuries, did the players really feel it was there for them tonight?

I think they understood the opportunity for sure. When the reality of it out there hits you, it's a bit different to maybe what you envisioned in your head. We'll learn from tonight but the major lesson to learn is that we can't go into games like this looking to protect or try to get results in other ways than what's got us to this point. I'm sure the players will learn from that, I'm sure they're disappointed by that. As much as we've missed an opportunity to get to a final, what probably hurting even more is that we didn't really give ourselves a chance with our performance tonight.

Is that why you said when you set the team up or is that just the way the game ended up being?

We set the team up and our intent was to go out and play the same way we play every week. We were trying to put pressure on them and unsettle them but it never really materialised. We didn't really have conviction when we had the ball either which allowed them to get control of the game. So a whole manner of things that we didn't really do that would have given us at least an opportunity to get past this stage.

turn with heavy criticism with Ange Postecoglou message

Jamie Redknapp has criticised Tottenham Hotspur's performance as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Ange Postecoglou's side held a lead, albeit a slender one, going into the second-leg against the competition holders - thanks to Lucas Bergvall's winner in the reverse fixture. The North London club defended well and frustrated the hosts for the opening quarter of the game but their resistance was broken when Cody Gakpo levelled proceedings on aggregate.

The second-half was dominated by Liverpool and a Mohamed Salah penalty kick wrestled the advantage in their favour before goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk made it a miserable evening the north west.

Liverpool will face Newcastle United in the final next month while Spurs' hopes of ending their wait for a trophy depend on a run in either the FA Cup - when they travel to Aston Villa this weekend - or the Europa League.

"From Tottenham's perspective, I cannot remember a team in my lifetime go down with less of a fight than they did tonight," said Redknapp.

"Not having one shot on target in the semi-final second-leg, when you're trying to change the course of your history - I feel sorry for those young players. I think Djed Spence played 14 different positions, I've never seen anything like it.

"When you've got young players you're meant to help them. Archie Gray and Bergvall, they're trying their best but the senior players, I'd be looking at them to lead you to make sure you set the right tempo, they didn't do that.

"There's been some right lows this season, Palace, Everton, but that today, that scoreline, just horrendous."

Bissouma woeful but one player deserves credit

Tottenham lost 4-1 on aggregate to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Thursday night and here are our Spurs player ratings.

Ange Postecoglou handed a Spurs debut to new centre-back Kevin Danso, who joined from Lens at the weekend, with 19-year-old attacker Mathys Tel in the bench after his deadline day move from Bayern Munich. Danso started alongside Ben Davies with Archie Gray at right-back and Djed Spence on the left, with Pedro Porro on the bench with Tel.

Liverpool scored just after the half-hour mark when a Mohamed Salah cross made it all the way to the back post where the unmarked Cody Gakpo half-volleyed it in.

The hosts were given a penalty early in the second half when Antonin Kinsky brought down Darwin Nunez in the box and Salah stroked home the resulting spot kick. A third goal came on 75 minutes when Liverpool found space through the middle and a swift move ended with Dominik Szoboszlai slotting home. It became 4-0 when Virgil van Dijk headed in from a corner.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings after the match:

Antonin Kinsky

Couldn't get to Gakpo's low half-volley half an hour or so in. Made a good save from Salah's bouncing shot at the end of the first half. Mistimed his challenge on Nunez to give away a penalty and then dived the wrong way for Salah's spot kick. Made one save on his line but couldn't get to either of the next two Liverpool goals. 4

Archie Gray

Drifted inside and left Gakpo unmarked to score in the first half. The 18-year-old played at right-back, left-back and then centre-back on the night which sums up Spurs' problems. 5

Kevin Danso

One of the few to come out of the game with credit and he showed he's going to be a good player for Spurs. Liked to get forward with the ball as well. 7

Ben Davies

Took an early blow to the head after colliding with Kinsky and needed to have blood stemmed from the top of his head. Lost Van Dijk for the fourth goal before coming off. 4

Djed Spence

Looked the most fearless for Spurs and was switched to the right wing in the second half before coming back to left-back late on. 6

Rodrigo Bentancur

Battled away but was fighting a bit of a lone battle in the centre of the pitch. 5

Yves Bissouma

Gave the ball away as Spurs broke in the build-up to Gakpo's first half strike. Spurs needed him as an experienced head and he never really looked comfortable. 3

Pape Matar Sarr

Tried to bring some energy to the midfield but was often lacking in quality. 4

Dejan Kulusevski

Looked shattered in the first half, could barely control the ball, and tried to find some energy in the second half but to no avail. 5

Richarlison

Didn't make it to half-time before going off with an injury. 4

Son Heung-min

Didn't see enough of the ball during the game. Did hit the crossbar with a shot from a tight angle late in the second half and curled another effort over in added time. 5

Subs

Mathys Tel

Replaced Richarlison in the first half but hasn't got the physique to play in a similar hold-up role. A tough way to come in for his debut. Showed plenty of energy and he'll have better days. 5

Lucas Bergvall

Shored up the midfield a little but the damage was done. 5

Pedro Porro

Didn't add much to the game. 4

Mikey Moore

Came on for Davies for the final minutes and showed a couple of nice touches. N/A

Virgil van Dijk Liverpool red card decision explained after Richarlison elbow incident vs Spurs

Description

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk escaped action during the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur following an incident with Brazilian striker Richarlison.

In the opening two minutes of that contest at Anfield, the Spurs forward was left in a heap after seemingly being caught by the Reds captain's arm during a tussle for the ball.

Craig Pawson, who was on top of the incident, allowed play to continue before calling the two players together, after Richarlison took umbrage with the strong play from the Liverpool centre-back. The two tangled shortly after with Van Dijk bringing down the attacker on the edge of the Spurs box.

football.London understands the incident was checked, and cleared, for violent conduct as the video assistant referee (VAR) deemed that there was no error on-field to overturn the decision.

At the time of the incident, Ally McCoist, who was on commentary for ITV, said: "I don't think there's any doubt about having a look at it. He definitely brings him arm up, in a bid to hold him off, shrug him off the challenge.

"Is it a bit aggressive? There's an elbow there let me tell you that now, there's an elbow in the chin.

"Here we see it, maybe just below the chin but they'll certainly have a look at that. He might just get away with it because his below his chin Sam [Matterface]."

Tottenham dealt Richarlison injury blow during Liverpool Carabao Cup clash

Richarlison was forced off with injury in the first half of Tottenham's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool.

A Cody Gakpo goal just beyond the hour mark brought the tie level following Lucas Bergvall's late strike in the first leg. The Lilywhites spent the majority of the clash in their own half with one rare moment forward seeing Richarlison run down the channel and seemingly pick up another injury.

The Brazil international thumped the turf in frustration before receiving treatment. ITV commentator Sam Matterface suggested it was a calf issue with the 27-year-old having suffered a number of issues in that area since joining from Everton.

As a result, the decision was quickly made by Ange Postecoglou to bring January deadline day signing Mathys Tel on for his debut after joining the club just a few days ago on loan from Bayern Munich.

Despite most of the game taking place away from him, Richarlison was prominently involved in the first half. Just a few minutes into the clash, he was on the receiving end of a firm Virgil van Dijk elbow just below the chin.

That incident was cleared of violent conduct by VAR with it deemed it was not worthy of a red card, football.london understands. Richarlison was later fouled by the Liverpool captain which saw him offer a hand up, only to pull it away at the last minute as the Spurs striker reached out.

With Tel coming on, he looks set for more minutes than both he and Postecoglou perhaps expected with Dominic Solanke still out. Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert are some of the other attackers missing with James Maddison also unavailable.

Ange Postecoglou has named the Tottenham team that he believes can come away with a positive result from Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Thursday night.

Spurs bolstered Postecoglou's threadbare squad in the final days of the winter transfer window with 26-year-old centre-back Kevin Danso arriving from Lens on loan with an obligation to buy for £20.9million and then 19-year-old attacker Mathys Tel followed from Bayern Munich on deadline day on another loan with a £45.8million option to make his move permanent.

Danso starts alongside Ben Davies with Archie Gray at right-back and Djed Spence on the left, with Pedro Porro on the bench with Tel.

Postecoglou continues to be without Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero as well as a string of unavailable players with Dane Scarlett cup tied.

In the midfield Pape Matar, who scored on Sunday, comes into the midfield with Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma, while Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison and Son Heung-min start up front.

Here's the Tottenham team Postecoglou has selected to face Liverpool:

Kinsky; Gray, Danso, Davies, Spence; Bentancur, Bissouma, Sarr, Kulusevski, Richarlison, Son. Subs: Austin, Reguilon, Cassanova, Porro, Bergvall, Olusesi, Tel, Ajayi, Moore.

Chelsea attempt to hijack Tottenham transfer with airport repeat revealed

Description

Tottenham Hotspur's deadline day revolved around bringing the promising young Frenchmen Mathys Tel to north London, but a last ditch effort from Chelsea promised to hijack the deal in a Willian-esc move that could have seen Tel become a blue.

With Tel unhappy with his lack of minutes at Bayern Munich, a whole host of Premier League clubs came sniffing in attempt to bring the 19-year-old on board with Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal all interested.

Although it was Chelsea that could have posed the biggest upset to Spurs' plans. Tel initially rejected the first offer from Ange Postecoglou's side but after a phone call with the charming Aussie coach, seemed to have a change of heart. Meanwhile, Chelsea was mulling over a bid for the Frenchman, but upon hearing of Spurs' deal, Maresca's team tried to snatch him away just as he was about to board his flight.

Fortunately for Spurs, Tel had already made up his mind and turned down Chelsea's advances, opting to sign on loan with an option to make the deal permanent for £45 million in the summer, thereby avoiding a repeat of the 2013 Willian debacle.

The Brazilian winger infamously spent hours undergoing a medical at Spurs with a deal to bring him to White Hart Lane practically completed before making a quick trip to west London and being announced as a Blue just hours later.

Speaking of the transfer scandal more recently Willian revealed:" I stayed there for eight hours in the training centre. Tottenham’s director said, 'I’m going to report you to FIFA, this and that, fans here in England will boo you, this and that'. They made up a lot of things. I got stuck there for eight hours. Then I left and I went straight to meet the Chelsea people to sort the details and sign."

What Tottenham's January business means for the summer

Tottenham were active in the final days of the transfer market after clinching the loan signings of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel from Lens and Bayern Munich respectively.

The duo join Antonin Kinsky in signed on the dotted line during the January transfer window.

Very much strengthening their playing squad, Spurs will need to do likewise in the summer as they plan for the 2025/26 campaign and beyond.

We've taken a look at what Tottenham's January business could mean for the summer right here.

The power of Ange

Ange Postecoglou once again had a major role to play in a player choosing Tottenham Hotspur over other clubs.

A phone call with Mathys Tel proved decisive after it initially appeared that Spurs had missed out on the Frenchman's signature.

Postecoglou certainly has a way with words and he is very much a huge asset to Tottenham in the transfer market.
