Tottenham will be hoping to seal their place at Wembley - for the Carabao Cup final - by winning their impending semi-final against Liverpool. Ange Postecoglou's side already have the advantage following a Lucas Bergvall strike which saw Spurs win the first leg 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Despite their contrasting positions in the Premier League table, both teams won 2-0 away from home this past weekend. Around 24 hours on from a Mohamed Salah brace helping Liverpool defeat AFC Bournemouth, Son Heung-min set up Pape Matar Sarr for a late second after the Spurs captain's corner was turned into his own net by Vitaly Janelt.

Newcastle are waiting for the winners of this tie - after they beat Arsenal 4-0 on aggregate. Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy were both on target in Wednesday's second leg triumph after the former and Alexander Isak sealed a 2-0 win for the Magpies at Emirates Stadium last month.

With Eddie Howe's side dominating their opponents, there was simply no need for any further action beyond the allocated 180 minutes, but it is there if needed. For the first time this season, it is possible that a tie can go to extra-time if the aggregate score finishes as a draw and beyond that, a penalty shoot-out is possible.

It is worth noting that away goals do not count, either, so if Liverpool were winning 2-1 or 3-2 at the final whistle, extra-time and potentially penalties will be needed to decide the winner.

The semi-final stage also saw VAR being used for the first time in the competition, this season, with Spurs on the wrong end of one decision that saw a Dominic Solanke goal disallowed for offside. While the technology is in use, referees have also been confirming the final outcomes of big calls, such as that, to those in the stadium.

Following a review of Solanke's goal, referee Stuart Attwell said: "After a review, Dominic Solanke was in an offside position in the build-up to the goal. Final decision is offside."

Robert Vilahamn and his Tottenham Hotspur Women team will be watching on this weekend when the fifth round of the Adobe Women's FA Cup takes place. Losing in the competition 2-0 at Everton at the end of January, Spurs will have to wait another week to return to the pitch.

Arsenal are their next opponents, with the game taking place across north London at the Emirates Stadium. It will be the perfect fixture for Tottenham to bounce back to winning ways in after losing their last two matches. Their latest defeat came last Sunday as Manchester United secured a 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

football.london takes a look back at the reaction from the loss against Marc Skinner's men and also looks ahead to what is to come for Vilahamn's side.

Manchester United loss

Elisabeth Terland's early goal proved decisive as Manchester United claimed all three points at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend. The striker opened the scoring after only six minutes but Spurs just couldn't find a way to restore parity in what was left of the contest.

The defeat leaves Tottenham sixth in the Women's Super League after 13 games, trailing Brighton & Hove Albion in fifth by a single point.

“We had a tough start in the first half when they scored that goal and we didn’t really get ourselves into the game after that for a while, we defended better and better,” said head coach Vilahamn after the game.

“After half-time was much better and I think that’s actually when you can see we’re on a level, dare to play, press well and, although we don’t create enough chances, we created a few. It’s quite an even game in the second half, the players doing everything they can to get the draw, and we still lose, but I think we still showed we’re taking steps.”

Hunt picks out positives

It just wasn't to be for Tottenham on Sunday as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United. Despite the defeat, Clare Hunt opened up on the positives the team can take when speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game.

“We didn’t have many opportunities moving forward, but we had some really good moments in the transitions, I think that’s a positive,” said the Australia international.

“I think defensively, we defended for our lives to be honest and we showed how capable we are defensively, hopefully in the games moving forward, we don’t give them that chance in the opening minutes. I’m pretty happy with the team’s performance despite the result, take a lot of learnings from this and move forward."

She added: “It’s amazing to have the fans here, it’s a beautiful environment and allows us to play to our best, so we’re grateful to play here and hopefully we can continue to have more games here, but it’s amazing to have the supporters with us."

Kop loving life

New goalkeeper Lize Kop is loving life in north London following her move from Leicester City last month. The shot-stopper has already made an impression on the pitch and has duly felt the love from supporters.

“I have settled in really well so far, the girls are really nice, and they have been very helpful,” said Kop in the official matchday programme for the Manchester United game. “It made it so much easier because it’s not always easy to switch between teams, especially midway through a season, but I think the club has been really helpful to help me settle here.

“It’s very important to get to know the players, we tried to talk a lot, especially in my first three days before the Leicester game, and now with the busy schedule, it has just been as important to get as familiar with each other, see what we expect from each other and see what the team expects from me.

“It has also been a warm welcome from the supporters, they’re very important during a game, you hear them all the time and, as a player, it’s so nice to hear them cheering you on, it’s great.”

North London Derby countdown

It doesn't get any easier for Tottenham with the North London Derby against Arsenal next on the agenda. The team do have plenty of time to prepare for the game at the Emirates Stadium, which takes place at 12:30pm on Sunday, February 16.

At a time when Tottenham sit sixth in the standings, Arsenal, who face London City in the FA Cup this weekend, are 10 points ahead of them in third place after 13 games. Vilahamn's side are going to have to produce something very special to come away from the Emirates with maximum points but the extra time on the training pitch could possibly work in their favour.

He said: “It’s going to be nice to actually train as there has been so many games in the last few weeks, we haven’t been able to train in details, only video feedback, so it will be nice to train attacking football and, obviously, a game plan for Arsenal, which will be a tough game, but hopefully we can go there to compete.”

Dominic Solanke and Destiny Udogie have both fired Tottenham messages ahead of the huge Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool tonight. Lucas Bergvall's goal sees Spurs take a one-goal lead up to Anfield with Ange Postecoglou hoping to be boosted by two new signings.

Antonin Kinsky, Tottenham's first January window addition, kept a clean sheet on his debut against the Reds and, although several players are expected to be absent through injury, there are no fresh concerns - and both Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso could feature.

"In terms of availability from last week, everyone is fine and got through okay," Postecoglou admitted in a press conference. "So no issues there. Kevin [Danso] and Mathys [Tel] are both available.

"They have trained and are cleared to play so they are all good."

Micky van de Ven, despite returning last Thursday night, has been ruled out by the Spurs boss with Cristian Romero also still out even though he was spotted in training last month. "With Micky, and Romero to a certain extent, I kind of feel we have to be a bit more conservative with them," he added.

"Micky got through the game alright, but I don't think he feels ready for that step up to the Premier League, the intensity of it. Same with Romero." James Maddison, Timo Werner, Guglielmo Vicario and Brennan Johnson are all edging closer to being back available.

Radu Dragusin, meanwhile, has joined Wilson Odobert as a long-term absentees with Spurs confirming he would require surgery after picking up a knee injury against Elfsborg in the Europa League. Solanke and Udogie are both still unavailable, also, but it appears both are very excited to watch their teammates this evening.

Via Instagram stories, the duo reposted an official graphic posted by the Carabao Cup and Tottenham promoting the fixture, which gets underway at 8pm on Merseyside.

The £66m sum that shows why Tottenham Hotspur should be all in on Europa League

While the domestic campaign for Tottenham Hotspur may have been a major struggle this season, the club still has one foot in a major final and the glimmer of hope of UEFA Champions League football next year.

Winning the Carabao Cup won’t deliver a pass to the top tier European competition for Spurs if they were to edge past Liverpool in the second leg of their semi-final on Thursday evening and find a way past already secured finalists Newcastle United, although it would provide a path to the play-off round of the Europa Conference League.

Carabao Cup triumphs don’t yield huge financial gains either, with the prize pot for winning the competition just £100,000 in the final, with the biggest gains for clubs coming from matchday revenue for any home games they have along the way.

But Spurs did manage to punch their ticket to the last 16 of the Europa League last week with a 3-0 win at home to Swedish side IF Elfsborg, a result that secured fourth spot with a record of five wins, two draws and a defeat.

A top four finish is not happening for Ange Postecoglou’s side this season, but they could still qualify for next season’s Champions League should they be crowned winners of the Europa League, although with big names such as Manchester United, Ajax, Lazio, Olympique Lyonnais, Athletic Bibao, Spurs and Eintracht Frankfurt all in the mix, it won’t be an easy task for a woefully out of sorts Spurs side.

With the league phase now done and dusted, the true financial benefit of Tottenham competing in the Europa League can be seen, with the club having achieved around £18.2million in attributed revenue. That comes from €450,000 (£370,000) per win, of which there were five, making it €2.25million (£1.9million), as well as three draws, which delivered a total of €300,000 (£251,000).

That comes on top of participation funds of €4.3million (£3.6million), and a league ranking qualification payment of €2.7million (£2.3million). Booking a spot in the last 16 brings in a further €1.75million (£1.5million).

It is the broadcast rights that are particularly valuable, as is the case in the Champions League, with the combined slice of the European and non-European part of the value pillar, which averages the club market value and the five-year UEFA coefficient that saw the club rake in €9.7million (£8.1million). If the revenue of four home games already in the bank for the club is used, as well as the guaranteed extra one in the last 16, then based on a rough estimate of £3.5million in income for one match, that is a potential £17.5million in additional matchday revenue to be taken into account.

While the money from the Europa League will go a little way to easing some of the pain caused by a lack of Champions League football, the revenue comparison with Europe’s biggest competition shows the potential for rivals to pull away from Spurs, with Arsenal’s return to the Champions League stage having seen them leapfrog Tottenham from 10th into seventh when it comes to total revenue in the recently-published Deloitte Football Money League.

Not taking into account additional matchday revenue for each club, Liverpool have earned £84million, Arsenal have earned £78million, Manchester City have bagged £65million, and Aston Villa have already banked nearly £60m from competing so far, with all of them making through the group stage of the competition, albeit with Man City set for a tricky playoff fixture against Real Madrid.

There is also the impact that can be felt on commercial deals, where some partners see the value of their deals increased in line with the additional exposure in the Champions League, while success in the competition provides clubs with the leverage to ask for more when either seeking new commercial partners or renegotiating with existing ones.

There is a £66million gap in revenue between Liverpool and Spurs from just the group stage of the competition, underlining the huge importance that being a regular in the competition has on the finances of major clubs.

Liverpool dropped a place in the Deloitte Football Money League that was published last month, with revenues impacted by a season in the Europa League. They were leapfrogged by Arsenal after the Gunners made their return to Champions League football and had access to the revenues associated with that.

A season out of the competition hurts finances but can be addressed, and Liverpool are likely to see a significant bounce back in the 2024/25 financial year with a loss anticipated for the 2023/24 period. But remaining outside of the competition for too long will be severely impactful for Spurs’ finances, and even with the strength of commercial deals and matchday revenue being so high, it will be hard to stop their rivals gaining financial ground in a significant way.

This season’s Europa League should take on greater significance, and next season’s Premier League campaign will go the same way.

Tottenham’s threadbare squad this season, ravaged by injuries, was added to at the transfer deadline with the signings of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel and RC Lens defender Kevin Danso, while some of those on the treatment table are expected back before the next round of Europa League games commence.

A large squad and the ability to rotate is a key feature for clubs who achieve European success, and while Spurs aren’t a mathematical certainty to avoid a relegation dogfight, they have enough of a gap and enough quality to really have to ponder too much on that doomsday scenario.

But they may have to start thinking about the Europa League in reverse a little. Often it has been a distraction for big clubs chasing a top four finish, but for Spurs it could well provide them with a golden ticket to a competition that has been revamped and has never been worth more to clubs, with even a run to the last 16 potentially delivering £100million in revenue when additional matchday income and extra broadcast sums are all factored in. Those kinds of figures are hugely impactful.

Spurs’ revenue is expected to fall from £549million in 2022/23 to £529million for the 2023/24 financial year, according to the Deloitte report, and that is a trend, at a time when rivals Arsenal are set to see their revenue rise by a third year-on-year to £616million thanks to Champions League football, that cannot continue indefinitely.

The Europa League should be Spurs’ major focus outside of ensuring they do enough to be a Premier League side next season, which they will, but how big of a squad Postecoglou will have to choose from remains to be seen.

Nine Tottenham players guaranteed to miss Liverpool Carabao Cup clash amid injury crisis

Tottenham Hotspur will soon be hoping to welcome several players back from injury, as they keep their fingers crossed of the problems so far this season easing.

But it seems that they may have to get through a couple of games yet with the physio room still full to the brim. The first of those comes tonight (Thursday) as they take on Liverpool at Anfield in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final (8pm kick-off).

Spurs take a 1-0 lead into the game from last month’s first leg, and it’s an advantage they will look to hold onto as they aim to face Newcastle United in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Ahead of the game, Spurs have been handed a big injury blow with the news that Radu Dragusin has suffered a serious knee injury that will rule him out for the remainder of the season.

The injury means that Ange Postecoglou is expected to be without at least nine first team players for the clash against Liverpool. Here’s a rundown of the availability of players on the injury list.

Dominic Solanke

Injury: Knee.

What Postecoglou has said: "Speaking after the win over Hoffenheim at the end of last months the Spurs boss revealed: "With Dom [Solanke] the information now is around the six week mark with him. No surgery but we're looking around six weeks. It might be quicker but we'll see."

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Cristian Romero

Injury: Hamstring.

What Postecoglou has said: "Romero is a bit of a tricky one. We are not really sure yet. There is still some work he needs to do. It’s just a slower healer, and it is one we are looking at on a week-to-week basis."

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Wilson Odobert

Injury: Hamstring.

Odobert is in a group of players who are expected back soon, but the game against Liverpool is expected to come too early.

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

James Maddison

Injury: Leg.

Like the others, Maddison is expected back soon, but Liverpool is expected to come just a bit too quickly.

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Destiny Udogie

Injury : Hamstring.

He’s in the group of players expected back in around a week.

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Guglielmo Vicario

Injury: Ankle.

He’s in the group of players expected back in around a week.

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Timo Werner

Injury: Hamstring.

He’s in the group of players expected back in around a week.

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Brennan Johnson

Injury: Leg.

He’s in the group of players expected back in around a week.

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Radu Dragusin

Injury: Knee.

It has been confirmed that the player will miss the rest of the season after suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury.

Will he be available vs Liverpool? No.

Micky van de Ven

Injury: Hamstring.

The defender made his return to action in the Europa League, but was left out of last weekend’s Premier League squad.

What Postecoglou has said: "Micky got through the [Europa League] game with no problem, but he feels he's not ready yet for the step up to the Premier League. And after losing Radu (Dragusin), I'm not going to risk these guys."

Ange Postecoglou is about to do something vs Liverpool that Tottenham have not done in weeks

Description

It is no secret that Tottenham have gone through the mill when it comes to injuries this season. Without the majority of their first-choice back-line for much of the campaign, Spurs have suffered in forward areas too, with Richarlison, Dominic Solanke, Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson all spending prolonged periods on the sidelines.

Spurs are 14th in the Premier League in what has been a disastrous league campaign so far, although they did pick up a much-needed win against Brentford last Sunday to ease any relegation fears somewhat.

The Lilywhites take that result into a huge clash at Anfield on Thursday night, where they hold a 1-0 lead over Liverpool going into the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final. It is that cup competition, plus a fourth round FA Cup match to look forward to a progression to the last 16 of the Europa League that has led head coach Ange Postecoglou to say that it can still be a "special season" for Tottenham.

Spurs last reached a major final in 2021 - the infamous League Cup that ended 1-0 to Manchester City after Jose Mourinho had been sacked just days before the showpiece. That was the fourth final in a row Tottenham had lost.

Now they have a chance to make it to another showpiece event at Wembley Stadium, although injury issues have not gone away. However, there is something Postecoglou can do against Liverpool that he has rarely been able to do in recent weeks and months - make changes.

Tottenham added Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel to their squad in the January transfer window, giving them further options at the back and up top.

Micky van de Ven may not be ready to return just yet, but Danso's arrival does mean Archie Gray is likely to get a well-earned rest. There are options in midfield, with Pape Matar Sarr coming off the bench and scoring against Brentford, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski all options in there too.

Postecoglou has the option to go a bit more defensive and play three more solid midfielders in there, or he could play Kulusevski in the ten role.

Then, up top, Tel's arrival offers the opportunity to change things there too. Tel can play anywhere across the front line and can slot in on the right if Kulusevski is in the midfield. Similarly though, if the Swede is preferred out wide, Tel can play through the middle, to ease the load on the only just returning Richarlison, who could be saved for minutes from the bench.

Son Heung-min is another who could do with a rest, but it seems unlikely the club captain would be taken out for a crucial semi-final second leg. If he were, Tel can also play from the left - where he played a lot for Bayern Munich.

Whatever Postecoglou chooses, it is that - a choice - that will make him happy on Thursday night. In previous matches there have been very few decisions to make, given the players at his disposal. And with more returning from injury in the coming week, the squad could start to look very healthy again.

Tottenham beat 60 clubs to make £3.5m transfer statement as new signing breaks silence

Tottenham Hotspur’s record signing of young striker Mason Melia should be a ‘statement’ to Irish football, according to the player’s uncle and representative Clive Clarke.

Spurs confirmed the transfer of the 17-year-old St Patrick’s Athletic player on Tuesday evening with the teenager due to arrive at the club at the start of the next January transfer window, following his 18th birthday. The deal will see Spurs pay an initial fee of €1.8 million (£1.5m), rising to a possible £3.5m with a 20 percent sell on clause.

It’s a record transfer fee for a player moving out fo the League of Ireland. Speaking to RTE Radio 1 Morning Ireland, St Patrick’s manager Stephen Kenny revealed how Spurs won the race for the forward: "Garrett Kelleher, the (Pat's) owner, was highly involved in negotiations, that's certainly outside my remit," he said.

"He could have gone to Italy, Germany or Belgium - he could have moved there (to those countries) this year or last year - but he got the move that he wanted. I think the move to Tottenham is the one that he really wanted."

Melia is the nephew of former Premier League and Republic of Ireland left-back Clive Clarke, who also represents the player. He also revealed how Spurs beat off competition for the transfer.

"It's through Mason's hard work that it has been able to happen," Clarke told RTÉ Radio 1 this morning. "He went over to Spurs three years ago [to visit], it's a club he thinks very fondly of. We probably had 50 or 60 offers throughout Europe.

"The likes of Celtic have come really strongly and pushed really hard for him. You can only pick one club and he chose Spurs. We decided to make it happen and it's all done now.”

Clarke now believes that the transfer could set a precedent for other Irish teams when it comes to their young talent moving over to England. "It was so easy to go over as a young teenager like I did in the past," he added.

"You go into the academies that are really well funded in the UK and try to develop. But that has become more and more difficult, especially the bigger academies, because there is so many players in them. I think it's brilliant for the League of Ireland.

"The FAI and Government have to get together to really fund the underage players coming through and give them everything the GAA players get.

"It's crazy an amateur sport is better funded than a professional sport in Ireland. That needs to change to give the best young players the foundations to follow in Mason's footsteps.

"Hopefully this transfer fee is a statement that it could be done and we don't have to give our best young players away to English clubs for €100,000 or €200,000."

The player himself has also responded to the transfer. Following his move to Spurs, the striker took to Instagram to send a message.

Sharing a picture of him posing with his new shirt, he wrote: “Buzzing to have signed for @spursofficial, see yous in 2026.” He added a white heart and big smiling emoji.

Can Mathys Tel play for Tottenham vs Liverpool in Carabao Cup semi

Description

It has been revealed whether or not Mathys Tel can play for Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. The Lilywhites will lock horns with Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night, with a place in the final at Wembley Stadium up for grabs.

Last month, Tottenham clambered past the Premier League leaders in the first leg, with Lucas Bergvall netting a late winner to give his side a one-goal lead on aggregate. While Spurs will be without some big names in the return fixtures, Ange Postecoglou managed to strengthen his squad in the transfer window.

The North Londoners kicked off January by wrapping up a deal for Antonín Kinský before bringing in Kevin Danso and Tel on loan from RC Lens and Bayern Munich, respectively. In fact, football.london understands that Tottenham managed to insert an option-to-buy clause into the latter's contract.

Initially, there were suggestions that Tel would join Spurs on a straight loan, but the Lilywhites pushed for a more long-term deal. Having not previously played in the Carabao Cup for another team this season, the 19-year-old forward will be eligible to play against Liverpool on Thursday night.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Tottenham's clash against Liverpool, Postecoglou confirmed that his two new arrivals are available for selection. The Spurs boss said: "In terms of availability from last week, everyone is fine and got through okay. So no issues there. Kevin [Danso] and Mathys [Tel] are both available. They have trained and are cleared to play so they are all good."

Postecoglou added: "Look, he's got the attributes to play, I think, as a nine for sure, but he's played wide really successfully as well. That's the beauty of him coming into us, at the moment we're going to need him probably in all of those areas because it's fair to say, as much as we've got issues at the back, we've probably got bigger issues in the front third at the moment, we're missing three wingers and our striker.

"I get people are still dismissing the fact that tomorrow night we're still gonna have nine, maybe 10 first team players out of our starting line-up, so having Mathys who can play both wide and central. Richy's doing great for us at the moment, but again he's coming off not playing for a while and we've got to be really careful with him.

"Sonny's playing all the time, we've got Mikey he's a 17-year-old, we've got Deki who can play in there, so having him we can play either side. I reckon in the short term until we get some numbers back, I think he can fill all three roles."

Postecoglou could very well throw Tel into the deep end, but a debut seems more likely to come later this month once he gets his feet under the table at Hotspur Way. Aston Villa host Tottenham at Villa Park for an FA Cup fourth round tie on Sunday evening.

Spurs will then lock horns with Manchester United in the Premier League the following week before playing Ipswich Town at Portman Road. The Lilywhites end the month with a highly-anticipated match against Manchester City.

Tottenham predicted team vs Liverpool as Postecoglou makes Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso decisions

Ange Postecoglou finally has some options to select from when it comes to his Tottenham starting XI to face Liverpool at Anfield in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Thursday.

Spurs added to their squad in the final days of the winter transfer window with 26-year-old centre-back Kevin Danso coming in from Lens on loan with an obligation to buy him for £20.9million and then 19-year-old attacker Mathys Tel followed him from Bayern Munich on deadline day on another loan with a £45.8million option to make his move permanent.

The Tottenham head coach will have to decide whether both players, neither of which have played a lot of football in the past couple of weeks since the winter break in France and Germany, will start the game at Anfield or come off the bench at some point as both have received their work permits and are available. There is also another big cup tie three days later with the FA Cup fourth round tie at Aston Villa on Sunday.

Postecoglou continues to be without Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero and said that none of the other injured players are in contention, but it might be worth keeping an eye if any of them travel with to Liverpool on Wednesday evening in case any of them make a late run to the bench.

Here's the Tottenham team we reckon Postecoglou will select to face Liverpool on Thursday evening.
