Ange Postecoglou issues Tottenham January transfer update and drops Yang Min

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Tottenham are "working hard" to add to their squad in the January transfer market. Spurs are incredibly short on experienced first-team players at present following an injury crisis at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham have a real lack of options in defence as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Ben Davies and Destiny Udogie are all currently in the treatment room. First-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is also out and not expected to return until the end of February.

Quick movers in the winter market 12 months ago after clinching deals for Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner, Spurs supporters are hopeful that the club can bolster the squad over the coming weeks with some big games on the horizon. Postecoglou knows how difficult it is to operate in the January market and he has outlined the importance of not panicking and bringing in players who are not going to be a suitable fit.

"It's not a matter of pushing, but I think, the club are working hard to try and sort of get some help for the playing group," he said in his pre-match press conference. "It’s no secret we need to bolster our numbers up a little bit, so the club's working hard on that.

"Obviously January is not an easy month, we understand it's not an easy time to bring people in particularly quickly and at the same time we still want to make sure we do what we think is the best thing for us rather than sort of just panic and bring people in who aren’t going to be a suitable fit."

On whether a new signing is imminent, he added: "I don't know. Could be imminent, could not be imminent."

Yang Min-hyeok is now officially a Tottenham player after it was confirmed at the end of July that he would officially join the north London club from Gangwon FC on January 1. Even though Spurs have a real lack of options at present, Postecoglou has indicated that the plan for the new player is just to "let him settle" as he tries to adapt to life in a new country.

"No real plan at the moment. Just let him settle," he said. "He is still very young and has come in from the other side of the world where the level of competition is nowhere near what he is going to face here. We will just give him time to adapt.

"It helps that Sonny is here and kind of helps him around when he is at the club and outside the club. We are just trying to get him settled early and give him the chance to settle in. No real plan, we will just take it as it goes with him and see how he settles in."

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Destiny Udogie will face around six weeks on the sidelines due to the hamstring injury he sustained against Wolves. Starting last Sunday's game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Italian suffered the issue early in the second half and had to be replaced by Sergio Reguilon.

Udogie struggled to walk off the pitch and the severity of the injury soon became clear. The left-back joins a long list of Tottenham players in the treatment room at present that includes the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven, Ben Davies and Cristian Romero.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's game against Newcastle United, Postecoglou indicated that Van de Ven, Davies and Romero are expected to return at the end of the month, with Richarlison and Mikey Moore hopefully back next week. The boss also confirmed that Vicario is still out until the end of February.

"Destiny his hamstring. Looks around six weeks for him. We lose [Rodrigo] Bentancur suspended. None of the injured ones are back yet. We've had a bit of an illness bug with a few not training," he said in his pre-match press conference.

"At this stage Richy and Mikey Moore are the next cabs off the rank, we're hoping next week. Ben, Micky and Romero all kind of around the same time, back end of January."

When asked if Spurs could possibly lose more players due to the sickness bug, he said: "Not sure yet."

Ange Postecoglou is holding his pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of Tottenham's Premier League clash against Newcastle United on Saturday lunch time.

Spurs have had the luxury of six whole days to recover for this match with their only midweek free of a game in around three months and Postecoglou gave his players two days off to recover earlier in the week. He could still have up to 10 players unavailable on Saturday to face Eddie Howe's man but at least those players who are fit have managed to recharge for a change.

Postecoglou will deliver the latest update on Destiny Udogie's hamstring injury suffered against Wolves with the early suggestions that the young Italian left-back could miss up to eight weeks of action. The Tottenham boss will also give the latest on Richarlison and Mikey Moore's return to training and whether either of them or both could be involved on the bench against in-form Newcastle.

The Australian desperately needs new faces to bolster his threadbare squad and Postecoglou will also give an update on the club's transfer activity and when he and the Spurs supporters can expect new faces.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold is among those putting the questions to Postecoglou ahead of the match. Scroll down for his latest updates from the press conference at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham already have £21m agreement to sign their very own Rodri as player makes transfer claim

Real Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso is using transfer links to Tottenham and other clubs as motivation to keep evolving as a player. Only arriving in Andalusia last January, the United States international has made a real impression in La Liga and duly come to the attention of a number of Europe's top sides.

Now a teammate of former Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, the summer transfer involving the Argentina midfielder could well impact Cardoso's future going forward. Needing to finalise terms in order to see Lo Celso return to the Estadio Benito Villamarin on a permanent basis after a frustrating spell in London, Tottenham agreed to a priority option for Cardoso as part of the package.

Spurs can clinch the signing of the former Internacional player in a reported two-week window in the summer of 2025 for a lower set price, which is claimed to be around €25million (£21million). If they opt to not to take up that option and pass on the opportunity to sign the 23-year-old, the deal instead becomes a sell-on clause for a player they do not even own.

According to Spanish publication Diario de Sevilla, Tottenham, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and an unnamed club are all interested in securing Cardoso's signature. Speaking in an interview with Marca, the youngster opened up on the transfer links and how they make him feel.

"I feel good, this motivates me even more to continue working, evolving and seeking to achieve great goals," said Cardoso.

When asked if the links to some of Europe's top clubs can help him lose focus, he added: "Not for me, I have a very calm head about this, I try to stay focused on the present and keep working to help Betis, I leave that in the hands of my father and my agent."

Spanish clubs do tend to have release clauses in a player's contract, with Cardoso's reported to be a whopping €80million (£66.4million). The highly-rated player has revealed that the "numbers are scary" but it is not something he thinks about too much.

Tottenham could certainly do with addressing the No.6 role in Ange Postecoglou's midfield as they have yet to find the perfect solution to the position. Cardoso could certainly help them do that, especially as Manchester City star Rodri is a huge inspiration for the United States midfielder.

"I have Kaka as an idol on and off the pitch, and I have two players who are my inspiration, who I love to watch play, who are Rodri and Busquets," he admitted.

"They are players who have a very similar style of play to mine, and players who have reached the highest level of football. I am always evolving, trying to learn from my teammates and from these players who inspire me. I think I can improve my arrival into the final third a bit more, and I think I can help the team in that as well."

Cardoso will celebrate the first anniversary of his Real Betis debut later this month. It has been a very important year for the Betis ace and one that has seen him grow as a player.

"It has been a very special year, with a lot of learning and evolution. I have adapted very well here," explained Cardoso. "I think I gained more experience, improved as an athlete both technically and tactically and I continue to evolve.

"I feel like I have improved my control of the game, and also how to better fulfil my role in the game tactically, I continue working to improve more and more."

Tottenham wonderkids all share one thing in common after special Jamie Donley moment

Description

There must be something in the water in Tottenham's academy - as well as perhaps in the Westerlo area - after a spate of wondergoals from the club's young players on loan in recent weeks.

While Spurs' first team are in the middle of a tough run with injuries galore, the young players taking some time away from the north London club have been showing what they're made of. Not only have they been catching the eye with their performances but they have also scored a spate of eye-catching goals.

The most recent came on Wednesday night when Jamie Donley started 2025 with a bang as he curled a left-footed free-kick from a wide angle on the right-flank all the way inside the left-hand post to pull Leyton Orient level before they won 3-2 at Bristol Rovers in League One. The curling kick from a tight angle sent the Orient players wild and meant the 19-year-old has three goals and two assists from his past four matches in the league.

Donley isn't the only Spurs player at Orient getting in on the act of scoring goals that the fans have been left talking about long afterwards as goalkeeper Josh Keeley stunned everyone in the FA Cup second round tie against Oldham by powering a last-gasp header from a free-kick into the back of the net in the ninth minute of added time to send the game to extra-time, which Orient then came through with a 121st-minute winner.

Keeley is no slouch in his day job either as he broke an Orient record with seven consecutive clean sheets recently and the 21-year-old has nine in total from his 13 League One games for the club.

Last week, a Tottenham player-to-be scored a wondergoal in Belgium when 17-year-old Luka Vuskovic, on loan at Westerlo before he officially joins Spurs this summer, executed a remarkable bicycle kick after a deep cross was headed back to him in the Club Brugge box. The rocket of a shot was the big teenage centre-back's sixth goal of the season.

Spurs midfielder Alfie Devine is at Westerlo as well and has also scored some superb goals in recent weeks. In that Boxing Day game at Brugge, the 20-year-old netted with a clever run, touch, turn and finish inside the left-hand post and last month fired home a delightful volley in a 4-0 win against Kortrijk.

Then there's 19-year-old George Abbott, who has netted two fantastic goals in recent weeks among three strikes for Notts County. One looping effort from distance came in the FA Cup against Peterborough on the same day as Keeley netted his effort for Orient and Abbott's strike ended with the Peterborough keeper running into the side of his goal.

Then on Sunday, during County's 5-3 win at Cheltenham, a corner was cleared to the edge of the box and the versatile midfielder cut across the ball perfectly with a bending half-volley that rocketed in high off the inside of the right-hand post.

It's not just the loan players who are hitting wondergoals this season as academy youngster Luca Williams-Barnett scored from inside the centre circle for Spurs' U18s twice in three games.

His most recent came in November when the 16-year-old collected the ball midway inside the Tottenham half, skipped past a challenge and let fly from just beyond the halfway line. It was a similar strike to the one he scored at West Ham the previous month.

Despite still being a schoolboy, Williams-Barnett has been on the bench four times for Ange Postecoglou's first team this season, on three occasions in the Europa League and once in the Premier League.

While Tottenham need something for now, it's clear that there's plenty of talent coming through for the future at the north London club.

Tottenham takeover latest as Amanda Staveley talks and lucrative Qatari offer revealed

Description

Tottenham Hotspur appear to have been dealt a blow to their hopes of a takeover. In the summer, Amanda Staveley emerged as a shock contender in the race to buy the north London outfit.

According to Bloomberg in July, the 51-year-old, who had recently stepped down from the Newcastle United board, identified Tottenham as a possible target as she looked for her next investment opportunity. The report stated that Staveley raised around £500m ($649m) through her investment fund PCP Capital Partners in preparation of a potential bid.

It's said that she even held 'initial discussions' to buy a minority stake with Rothschild & Co – an adviser to the Lilywhites. Bloomberg also claimed that AS Monaco was also on Staveley's radar before adding that all considerations were at an early stage and may not lead to any transaction.

Nevertheless, the former Newcastle chief has been heavily linked with a takeover of Tottenham ever since – but, now, she may no longer be a potential suitor. So, with that being said, football.london has rounded up everything you need to know about the future of Daniel Levy's ownership.

Staveley talks and Qatari offer

According to City AM, Staveley has been offered an advisory role by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation ahead of the 2034 World Cup. The report states that the Saudi Arabian FF are currently assembling organising committees after their unopposed bid was approved by acclamation at FIFA's Extraordinary General Meeting in December.

It's said that Staveley will not be given a formal position, but she's 'likely to be used as a sounding board given her contacts at European clubs'. The World Cup in Saudi Arabia will, controversially, force European clubs to radically reorganise their fixture schedules over two seasons to accommodate a winter competition in the Middle East.

As it stands, it remains to be seen whether or not this could stop Staveley from taking on her next project. If she were to accept a role at the Saudi Arabian FF then she'd be very busy in the nine-year build-up to the 2034 World Cup.

Jay-Z considered Tottenham bid

Jay-Z was once reportedly preparing a takeover bid for Tottenham Hotspur in the event that Lewis decided to sell the club. Speaking to the Express in July 2023, a close business associate of the American rapper said: "More than a few of the very top clubs there – like Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea – are now under US ownership and Jay would jump at the chance of a controlling interest at board level somewhere with the global reach of Spurs."

Ex-F1 chief eyed Premier League takeover

Speaking to Walker & Dunlop in June 2023, Greg Maffei revealed that he has considered buying a Premier League club. The ex-president and chief executive officer of Liberty Media, who owns Formula One Group, said: "That demonstrated success of Formula One, we now have - credit them - a reputation sports and others we have talked to, we can replicate that.

"You mention the Premier League teams; there isn't an asset we haven't looked at. That doesn't mean we've been ready to buy them all but we look at everything because we do think sports in general is attractive, we do think there are upsides and do think those things that management teams have taught up can help apply perhaps in other sports situations."

Qatari billionaire 'weighed up' swoop

Sheikh Jassim was once widely regarded as the frontrunner in the race to buy Manchester United from the Glazer family. Unfortunately for the Qatari billionaire, Sir Jim Ratcliffe crushed his dreams of buying a Premier League club after acquiring a minority stake.

After his £5bn buy-out proposal went to waste, Sheikh Jassim has continued to be linked with a takeover of Tottenham. In June 2023, ESPN journalist Mark Ogden told 'The United Stand' that the Qatari was 'weighing up a move' for the Lilywhites.

"They want the Premier League footprint," he said. "Somebody told me recently, they said that if the Qataris don't buy Man United, they'll be back and they might end up buying Tottenham."

NBA and F1 boss prepared mega offer

According to the Financial Times in February 2023, as quoted by the Evening Standard, Jahm Najafi was preparing a £3.1bn takeover bid to buy Tottenham. The report stated that the Iranian-American billionaire was working with a consortium of investors to structure an offer.

It was said that Najafi was 'weeks away' from presenting Lewis and Levy with a formal approach – but a bid failed to materialise. The Financial Times claimed that the 61-year-old, who is the vice chairman of the Phoenix Suns in the NBA and McLaren Racing, valued the north London outfit at approximately £2.5bn before adding around £620m of debt onto the club.

When Warren vs Sugar ended in knockout...

And finally, speaking on 'That Peter Crouch Podcast' in May 2024, Frank Warren claimed he almost beat Sir Alan Sugar to a deal for Tottenham Hotspur in 1991. The Boxing promoter and lifelong Arsenal fan said: "I nearly did, I nearly did with Terry Venables years ago. I actually got the thing together for him to get involved with Spurs.

"We did that in my box at the old Arsenal Stadium. We sat down and we were going to do the deal with Irving Scholar and Tony Berry, who was a director there at the time. We were quite close and the person who was going to fund it literally disappeared and he went and done the deal with Alan Sugar."

Tottenham eye up Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as Guglielmo Vicario transfer cover

Tottenham are eyeing up Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as potential cover for their injured stopper Guglielmo Vicario, football.london understands.

Vicario fractured his foot during the 4-0 win at Manchester City in November and 36-year-old Fraser Forster has been filling since with the Italian set to be out for a while longer. The former England international's displays have been mixed since stepping into the breach at Tottenham with some good early performances overshadowed by some mistakes in recent weeks, most notably with the ball at his feet under pressure.

Johnstone, 31 and also an England international with four caps, has made seven Premier League appearances this season for Wolves since arriving last summer in a £10million move from Crystal Palace at a time when Jose Sa appeared set for a Saudi Pro League move.

However, that move for the Portuguese stopper did not materialise and the two have shared the game time since, around a Johnstone injury, although now it appears that new Wolves boss Vitor Pereira has decided on Sa as his number one.

Now football.london understands that Johnstone is one of the main candidates that Spurs are looking at to provide cover during Vicario's absence. What kind of deal Wolves would allow for a player they signed for £10million just five months ago remains to be seen though.

With Forster's contract coming to an end this summer, along with academy product Alfie Whiteman's, Johnson could potentially provide longer term cover alongside Brandon Austin, who was handed a new five-year contract last year. Tottenham have previously looked into signing Johnstone in the past and perhaps this time a move will materialise.

Fikayo Tomori signs, Ben Chilwell deal, Jonathan David move

Description

Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham may not ordinarily have been expecting to be busy in the January transfer window. But needs may force their hand this winter.

Spurs spent big money bringing in Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert, Dominic Solanke and Lucas Bergvall (signed in February to arrive in the summer) to the club, with money also spent on Yang Min-hyeok to join this month.

But injuries have hit Tottenham hard so far in the 2024/25 season. Postecoglou has seen his defence particularly decimated by unavailability to the likes of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies, while first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is also missing.

Postecoglou has already admitted he will need to use the winter window to look for reinforcements up front, with Solanke bearing the burden in Richarlison's injury absence, as well as Odobert also suffering an injury.

So there are two certain areas the club will look to strengthen this month - and sooner rather than later you would think, with Spurs languishing in 11th in the Premier League table.

We asked our football.london writers to have their say on the transfers Tottenham need to make this month.

Lee Wilmot

Tottenham need a defender and a forward and that's just for starters. Ange Postecoglou may not be planning on signing another goalkeeper, but that's an area I'd look at as well, not to mention potentially making it two defender signings, rather than one.

Spurs' summer transfer window was very much focused on the future, with teenagers Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert arriving at the club.

What's needed is the here and now, though. Postecoglou is under immense pressure and he needs transfers to ease that pressure.

Fikayo Tomori has been linked with a return to the Premier League and that might not be a bad deal to get done, while Milan Skriniar could be an effective stop-gap solution.

You can get through January without having to spend too much money too. Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah and Lille striker Jonathan David are both out of contract in the summer and would be available at a cut-price this month.

It should be a busy window, but for Postecoglou he will want signings made quickly, or risk another month of pain.

Alasdair Gold

Postecoglou needs help across the board. Personally, for me centre-back and left-back are the two priority positions where there's just not enough cover with the injuries that keep happening in the backline.

In an ideal window another attacking option comes in with Wilson Odobert out for most of the season and Richarlison not the greatest when it comes to availability.

Spurs are also believed to be looking at midfielders if any that fit the Postecoglou system are available but I'd be more inclined to go for a short term goalkeeper fix in the mean time if it's a choice between the two.

Fraser Forster is a decent, experienced goalkeeper but the high line has to be compromised because of his inability to rush out quickly and sweep up behind it as Guglielmo Vicario does. Playing the higher line squeezes the space the opposition have to operate in and can force mistakes and Spurs miss that right now. They're just playing it about in their own half too much.

So in all it could be the busiest January window the club has ever had if - and it's a big if - they provide Postecoglou with what he needs. Everyone knows Spurs are desperate and need at least three if not four players to bolster his threadbare squad but will that desperation count against them?

Rob Guest

Tottenham need to be looking at making four signings before the month is out. The north London club ideally have to get one or two additions in at some point over the coming days so that they can be available for the Liverpool Carabao Cup fixture and also ahead of the upcoming North London Derby.

A new centre-back is a priority for Tottenham right now as they are so short in the heart of defence as things stand. AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has been linked and he would be an excellent signing due to his experience in Europe and also the Premier League.

The news regarding Destiny Udogie's absence also means that a new left-back is required very soon to compete with Djed Spence for a spot in the team. A new goalkeeper would also suffice if the right man is there, although that is certainly not top of the priority list right now with other pressing priorities to address first.

Finally, a winger who can also play up front would be most welcome as Spurs could do with another attacking option for what is a big second half to the campaign for Ange Postecoglou's side.

Sam Truelove

It could be a busy month for Tottenham. Ange Postecoglou has made it no secret he wants new faces through the door and I wouldn't be surprised if deals are done early next week.

A versatile defender should be a priority as Spurs are extremely light in that department currently. Ideally, Postecoglou needs someone who can play both centre-back and left-back. Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini can play both positions and wouldn't break the bank, while a loan deal for someone like Ben Chilwell could suit all parties. The Chelsea man is an out and out left-back but could offer experience and quality with Destiny Udogie injured.

Moving to the forward line and someone like Jonathan David appears to make sense. The Lille striker is out of contract in the summer and Spurs have registered interest in him in the past.

The Tottenham games that Destiny Udogie will miss after serious hamstring injury

Destiny Udogie's hamstring injury has added to the list of problems Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is dealing with right now at the club.

The 22-year-old left-back suffered the injury in the opening five minutes of the second half of the 2-2 draw against Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday and Udogie is not expected to return to full fitness and sharpness for Spurs until late February at the earliest as he faces up to eight weeks out.

The Italian's injury means that Postecoglou must select a side to face Newcastle on Sunday from a squad that could be missing as many as 10 first team players through injury or suspension, if Richarlison and Mikey Moore, who were set to return to training this week, are not yet involved.

Spurs have some huge matches on the horizon, including two Carabao Cup semi-final legs against Liverpool as well as a North London Derby, during a series of games that could decide what direction their season heads in. Postecoglou will deliver the latest update on the timeframe of Udogie's injury at his press conference at Hotspur Way on Friday afternoon.

Going with the eight-week expectation, here are the games that Udogie could miss if we're taking it as eight weeks from the date of the injury on December 29. The list of matches below does not include any potential further FA Cup fixtures if Spurs proceed past Tamworth in the third round of that competition.

Saturday January 4 - Tottenham vs Newcastle

Wednesday January 8 - Tottenham vs Liverpool (Carabao Cup)

Sunday January 12 - Tamworth vs Tottenham (FA Cup)

Wednesday January 15 - Arsenal vs Tottenham

Sunday January 19 - Everton vs Tottenham

Thursday January 23 - Hoffenheim vs Tottenham (Europa League)

Sunday January 26 - Tottenham vs Leicester

Thursday January 30 - Tottenham vs Elfsborg (Europa League)

Sunday February 2 - Brentford vs Tottenham

Thursday February 6 - Liverpool vs Tottenham (Carabao Cup)

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur supporters - who are in the UK - will be able to watch the first leg and second leg respectively of their Carabao Cup semi-finals against Newcastle United and Liverpool for free over the next month.

The Gunners reached the last four of the League Cup back in December when a Gabriel Jesus hat-trick inspired a comeback against Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium. Mikel Arteta's side will now face the Magpies over two matches to see which side will book their place in the Carabao Cup final in March.

Meanwhile, Tottenham progressed to the semi-finals after their thrilling 4-3 victory over Manchester United. Their reward was a two-legged showdown against Arne Slot's table toppers in the other last-four meeting.

The first leg of the Carabao Cup ties will start on Tuesday, January 7 when the Gunners host Newcastle before the return leg is played on Wednesday, February 5 at St. James' Park. Tottenham will, meanwhile, take on Liverpool (at home) on Wednesday, January 8 before the second leg at Anfield on Thursday, February 6.

Announcing the fixtures, the EFL (English Football League) confirmed the first leg at Arsenal as well as the return leg between Liverpool and Ange Postecoglou's side will be aired for free on ITV1 as well as Sky Sports. Explaining the decision, the EFL wrote in a statement: "All ties will [still] be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
