Daniel Levy sent clear January transfer message amid Ange Postecoglou Tottenham sack verdict

Daniel Levy has been told he must invest in the Tottenham squad further if Spurs are to challenge for major honours under Ange Postecoglou.

Postecoglou eased the pressure on his shoulders with a 5-0 demolition of Southampton on Sunday evening, with Spurs scoring all five goals in a dominant first half performance. The result was the last straw for the Saints, who sacked manager Russell Martin in the aftermath.

Injury-hit Spurs had been without a win in three in the Premier League up until Sunday night and had dropped into the bottom half of the table. The 5-0 win moved them up to tenth, but they are still some way short of where they want to be.

Tottenham splashed out £130million on three signings in the summer - Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert moving to the north London club. Two of those signings were teenagers though in the form of Gray and Odobert.

Lucas Bergvall had also been signed in February to join in the summer - another 18-year-old joining for £8.5million, with Yang min-hyeok - another 18-year-old - arriving next month for around £3.5million.

That £142million spend is not insignificant, but four of the five players signed are teenagers who will naturally take time to bed in. Spurs need players for the here and now.

Former goalkeeper Kasey Keller believes more investment is needed. Speaking to William Hill, he said: "You can't keep chopping and changing managers. It was only a few weeks ago that Spurs won 4-0 at Manchester City with a brilliant performance and last season Spurs started the season very well until several injuries happened.

"Right now, the inconsistency has been an issue, Spurs still suffer from injuries and replacements aren't the same. You also must look at the spending power of others in the league and Spurs had overachieved for years when others were spending more.

"Spurs have been close under [Mauricio] Pochettino, but in recent years Spurs haven't been in the mix for trophies. It does come down to investment in the team and Spurs have built a new stadium in recent years, one of the best in the country.

"They need to be given the tools now to compete by looking to recruit better players, a deeper squad of quality, so they can compete for trophies with these top teams. You do also need some luck along the way, but Spurs have the foundations to compete.

"You must have the right mindset as a club, and some can argue Spurs have just not invested right when it matters. Under Pochettino, he was overachieving and over-performing with the squad he had, regular top four finishes, Champions League finalists, this was the time to build and push on with adding more quality and keeping those top players.

Djed Spence will be intent on producing another Carabao Cup masterclass when Tottenham return to action in the competition on Thursday evening. Facing Manchester United in a quarter-final tie at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the right-back is a key reason for the team having the opportunity to set up a semi-final date in early 2025.

After all, it was his timely intervention that stopped Spurs from slipping to an embarrassing third round exit at the hands of Championship side Coventry City back in September. Introduced at half-time in place of Destiny Udogie, Spence was in the right place in the 88th minute to restore parity after making a wonderful run into the penalty box.

His goal gave Tottenham a lifeline and also a much-needed boost as they went on to win the game four minutes later courtesy of Brennan Johnson. Although Spence was not to feature in the following round of the competition against Manchester City, he could well make an appearance on Thursday night against Manchester United.

The 24-year-old has had to be incredibly patient this season in regards to pitch time, with his omission from the Europa League squad not exactly helping his cause as he looks to secure regular football in a Spurs shirt almost 30 months on from his move from Middlesbrough. Spence's opportunity finally arrived on Sunday evening as he took the place of Pedro Porro at right-back for Tottenham's game at Southampton.

Obviously rusty due to only making five appearances this campaign prior to the trip to St Mary's, Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale told TNT Sports ahead of the game that his team would hope to take advantage of Spence's lack of football and push on for the win.

"I remember watching Djed Spence in the Championship go up with [Nottingham] Forest, so we know he's a great player as well," explained the goalkeeper. "To come out from the cold almost and compete in the Premier League is going to be tough, so hopefully we can use that to our advantage and push on for three points."

Ramsdale could not have been more wrong as Spence made a telling impact 37 seconds into the game as he played in James Maddison for the opener. It was the full-back at his marauding best as he turned Flynn Downes on the halfway line before driving forward and slipping in his teammate to convert inside the area.

Constantly looking to get forward and attack for Tottenham when given the opportunity, Spence was also to have a hand in the team's second and fifth goals of the night as Son Heung-min and Maddison added to the scoreline. Spence's role in Maddison's second was to come from the opposite side of the pitch after moving across to take the place of the injured Udogie at left-back as Porro came on and took his usual berth on the right side.

Looking equally at home on the left as he does in his usual position on the right, the ex-Nottingham Forest loanee continued to have a say on the game after swapping flanks before making way in the 77th minute. He did appear to be limping come the full-time whistle, which is perhaps not that much of a surprise given his limited minutes since the season kicked off.

A shining light on a very good night for Tottenham, Spence, on his first Tottenham start, came in for plenty of praise from head coach Ange Postecoglou.

"They were great. Lucas is growing all the time, but he's 18. Archie is 18 and how many Premier League clubs are going to start two 18-year-olds in their line-up," said the Australian when asked about Spence and fellow starter Lucas Bergvall. "Djed has had to bide his time. To be fair, it's the one area of the pitch where we've had cover this year with Archie playing at right-back, so he's had to be patient.

"It's a testament to him and the coaches who have worked with him in training that he could come on today. We needed him for sure, not just to play but to make an impact and he did. Great reward for his patience and perseverance."

Spence signalled that he is 'hungry for more' with a three-word Instagram post after the game and the one-word message on his Instagram story which was rather apt was 'mentality'. A number of Tottenham players were quick to praise the full-back, with Maddison writing 'proud of u' in response to his teammate's message.

The London-born full-back will be hoping that this is just the start of things to come in a Tottenham shirt after making a real impression on his full Spurs debut. So often left to watch on from the sidelines after promising displays for Tottenham, Spence has now put himself in a really good position to possibly start against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

He was positive from the off at Southampton and his performance on the south coast has only raised the question as to why he hasn't featured more for Postecoglou and Tottenham this term. The player has certainly done more than enough to earn a second successive Tottenham start, thus leaving his head coach with a big call to make.

Question marks will surround Udogie's participation in the game after suffering with tightness in his quad prior to his substitution after Pape Matar Sarr's goal. Postecoglou mentioned in his post-match press conference that he doesn't think it's anything significant at this stage and that Udogie's early exit was more precautionary due to the amount of injuries the team have picked up over the past two months.

If Udogie is able to play no part then Spence will be leading the way to operate at left-back, just as he did in the second half of the 3-0 win at Manchester United earlier in the season. The other option if Udogie is fit would be for Spence to continue at right-back and hand Porro more of a rest after only getting a breather for 28 minutes at St Mary's on Sunday.

Tottenham fans have had to wait a long time to see the real Djed Spence in action. It was certainly worth the wait as he played a major role in Spurs hitting Southampton for five.

Worrying Djed Spence moment after Tottenham win and what James Maddison told him before the game

Tottenham got to feel what Newcastle did on that horrendous day at St James Park two seasons ago. That afternoon Eddie Howe's men raced away with early goal after goal and left Spurs embarrassed and eventually managerless as Cristian Stellini was handed his marching orders by Daniel Levy.

On this occasion it was Southampton left humiliated, their fans furious and the manager facing the exit was Russell Martin, relieved of his duties just over an hour after the final whistle on Sunday night.

Ange Postecoglou will feel sympathy for his young counterpart, who shares similar beliefs about the game, but ultimately football is about the victor getting the spoils and the Australian and his team needed this win and the manner of it.

It was so convincing that it allowed Postecoglou to take off his captain at half-time, while the team stepped off the gas in the second half to conserve their energy for a big Carabao Cup quarter-final in midweek against Manchester United.

While he plays down the need for it, Postecoglou will also have been heartened to hear his name sang loudly throughout the contest by the travelling Tottenham fans, as they did a couple of times in Glasgow in midweek.

There was a juxtaposition between the backing for Postecoglou and the chanting against Levy.

It's rare at Spurs to be in a position where the manager still has the fans mostly behind him while the chairman is getting those chants that come around every 18 months or so. Normally the manager is wrapped up in that, which allows Levy to make a change that deflects and produces a period of serenity with the hope that the new man will make everything right.

This time the Tottenham fans in the main can see what Postecoglou is trying to do as he goes about attempting to create a different version of the club, because the previous iteration hasn't worked for decades.

Postecoglou's Spurs are a goal off being the top scorers in the Premier League and only two teams have conceded fewer than them in the competition. Yet the inconsistency of the results, particularly during this injury-hit spell, have meant those numbers have not translated into their league position.

It will be fascinating to see what Levy does in this situation. For once there's no usual out with a manager whose time at the club is clearly at its end, certainly not at this point anyway, and the noises coming out of Spurs only support that as well as it being clear that the players are behind Postecoglou.

On Thursday night, the only negative chants from the away fans were about Levy, the travelling Tottenham faithful competing off the pitch with the home supporters who were singing for Martin's exit.

A couple of proactive fan campaign groups that have been trying to improve the atmosphere at Spurs' home games through songs and more coordinated efforts announced this week that they have ended their attempts to work with the club due to having different views on the way forward.

On Thursday night, the songs were instead aimed towards those at the top of the north London club. There was a chant about Levy that was sung by the entire away support throughout the evening, stating that they cared more about Dejan Kulusevski than the chairman due to what they believe is an antipathy towards them from the club's hierarchy.

That brought the slightly awkward sight of Kulusevski applauding the fans after the game as they began singing the chant towards him and the chairman.

This was the stadium where Antonio Conte launched his rant towards the club and his players. Two seasons later and Postecoglou played down the chants backing him as he did the post-match criticism he got at Bournemouth from the fans.

"I’m trying to separate me and my feelings from what we’re trying to do here. Like I said after the Bournemouth game, the ones that travel are obviously very hardcore. They support this club and they were disappointed with that," he said. "They made the trip tonight and would have enjoyed particularly the first 45. They didn't get to see any goals close up in the second half unfortunately.

"I said on Friday that nothing changes in me. I still have the same resolve and determination to make sure that we become the football club and football team we want to be. Tonight was about the players and I thought their efforts were unbelievable."

While it was a contest off the pitch between the two sets of fans to sing the loudest about their gripes and concerns, there was no such contest on the turf.

Southampton were buried in a flood of goals in the first half, the first coming just 36 seconds in.

Djed Spence wriggled away to embark on a powerful run through the middle of the pitch before prodding a perfect pass behind a defender into the path of James Maddison. The midfielder fired it through the keeper's legs and into the net.

Then on 12 minutes Son Heung-min doubled the visitors' lead when he smashed home a deep, curling Maddison cross that was headed on into his path. It was his 125th Premier League goal.

Two minutes later and it was 3-0 when Kulusevski, on his 100th Premier League appearance, tapped home a loose ball after a Son cross deflected back into his path.

A fourth arrived 10 minutes later when Destiny Udogie won the ball back in his own half, sprinted up the pitch and found Son. The skipper picked out the run of Pape Matar Sarr and the young midfielder dribbled around a defender and fired home expertly on the slide.

Postecoglou then took off Udogie as the young Italian began to feel a familiar muscle tighten.

"We'll see how he is. He felt a bit tight in his quad," Postecoglou told football.london. "To be fair, he wanted to continue but we can't take any risks at the moment. So we took him off with Sonny. I don't think it's anything significant at this stage and more precautionary."

There was a fifth and final goal to come just before the break. Son played in Maddison with a clever ball with the outside of his foot and the midfielder turned on a sixpence on the touchline and managed to squeeze in a curling effort from a tight angle into the top right corner.

It was the first time Spurs have scored five goals in a Premier League first half and the hosts were shell-shocked. Their fans were furious, around a quarter of them having seen enough and began filing out of the ground.

Son, now Tottenham's record assists provider in the Premier League era with 68 to eclipse Darren Anderton, went over at the half-time whistle to console his former team-mate and Spurs academy product Kyle Walker-Peters.

The Tottenham captain did not return for the second period, given a rest ahead of that Thursday cup quarter-final and replaced by Brennan Johnson.

The second half brought an inevitable stepping down through the gears by Tottenham as they looked to conserve energy and Lucas Bergvall and Spence naturally tired on their first Premier League starts.

Southampton managed to carve out a couple of opportunities but mostly Tottenham kept them at bay or played them offside, 18-year-old Archie Gray again adapting well alongside 22-year-old Radu Dragusin.

"Really proud of the players. We obviously had a tough away European fixture on Thursday night," Postecoglou told football.london. "We had 10 first-team players unavailable for a number of reasons today in a squad of 25, and we asked a lot of them to go out there again and dig into their wells of energy.

"A couple we put out there hadn’t played in ages, haven't started games, so the fact the boys could play with such energy and quality was just outstanding. Really pleased that they get the rewards for it because they deserve it."

With Sergio Reguilon absent from the bench on Sunday that would suggest some kind of issue ensured the Spaniard took Spurs into double figures for unavailable players.

This was a game in which both the young players and the senior players played their part together.

Postecoglou didn't just have two 18-year-olds in the spine of his team in Gray and Bergvall. He also had the relatively inexperienced Spence making his first Premier League start and in the second half academy graduate Alfie Dorrington made his debut for the club.

When Will Lankshear joined the fray in the final 10 minutes it meant that Tottenham became the first club this season to have four teenagers on the pitch at the same time in the Premier League.

Gray put in another impressive display in the centre of defence, helping to nullify much of what the Saints did. He had the ball more than any other player on the pitch with 101 touches of it.

The 18-year-old then showed his ridiculous energy levels late on by switching to left-back and making raiding runs up and down the flank before executing a perfect last-gasp tackle in front of his own goal to ensure the clean sheet.

For Bergvall, this was an important next step in his development over the weeks since his tough evening in Istanbul, showing what a learning experience that noisy night was for him.

The teenager's recent substitute appearances as a calm head in the number six role earned the reward of this first Premier League start. The young Swede was composed on the ball and brave enough to twist and turn under pressure or play the first time passes to the flanks that Postecoglou requires from those in the role.

Initial suggestions were that Gray and Bergvall would develop into a six and an eight/10 respectively, but there's as much chance they end up swapping around based on this recent evidence.

Sarr only turned 22 a couple of months ago yet he was dominant throughout. The Senegal international's composed run and finish meant it's now four goals and two assists for the young midfielder already at this stage. He also won the ball back to set Spurs away for their fifth goal.

He was like a rash that consumed Southampton, winning all three of his tackles while making four interceptions and six ball recoveries. He also made two successful dribbles, had a 95% pass success rate, created two chances and played seven passes into the final third, while winning five of his seven ground duels.

Then there was Spence. This was exactly what the 24-year-old needed to show that he can bring to the table as he finally made his first start for Tottenham 881 days after arriving through the Hotspur Way doors.

The right-back set the tone from the first whistle with that instant strong run up the pitch and he was tidy in what he did defensively with all of his three tackles successful and he made one interception and one recovery as well as two clearances with his feet and two with his head.

He grabbed an assist and technically two pre-assists - if you're into that kind of thing - for his involvement in Tottenham's second and fifth goals.

football.london asked Postecoglou what he made of his two starters after their full Premier League debuts.

"They were great. Lucas is growing all the time, but he's 18. Archie is 18 and how many Premier League clubs are going to start two 18-year-olds in their line-up?" he asked

"Djed has had to bide his time. To be fair, it's the one area of the pitch where we've had cover this year with Archie playing at right-back, so he's had to be patient. It's a testament to him and the coaches who have worked with him in training that he could come on today.

"We needed him for sure, not just to play but to make an impact and he did. Great reward for his patience and perseverance."

Both players showed the signs of their exertions as the game wore on with Bergvall cramping up in the final 10 minutes and Spence taken off 77 minutes and clearly limping heavily away from applauding the fans after the match. Hopefully it was just cramp and the stiffness that will come after so long without playing that much football in one go.

Maddison could be seen having a long chat with Bergvall on the pitch after the victory and he admitted speaking to Spence before kick-off.

"He's been patient and he's a great lad. I said to him before, Djed is quite a laid back character anyway, so I don't think he needed too much of a pep talk. I just told him before, go and do what you do," said the midfielder.

"I think he got the ball and managed to wriggle away like he does, which he's very good at, and that's a run that I've been working on for years. You know that left pocket running behind the defence. To be fair to Djed, it was a brilliant weighted pass, perfect, and I just had to finish it off. So big credit to Djed for that one."

After the game, Maddison posed for a photo with his starting midfield colleagues Sarr and Bergvall, putting up the caption 'father and his two sons'.

This was the kind of Maddison that Tottenham need, leading the young players both on and off the pitch.

After a quiet display at Rangers, with Postecoglou's Timo Werner criticism aimed at the senior players like Maddison and Son as much as at the German, the midfielder was a gamechanger this time around.

Maddison's two finishes were clinical, the second curled into the smallest of gaps inside the right-hand post. He pulled out a sniper celebration with Radu Dragusin - the Romanian himself impressive again - that was inspired by the most recent iteration of The Day of the Jackal starring Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne.

Maddison was also involved in both the second and third goals. He battled on the pitch and won seven of his nine ground duels, recovered the ball twice and had an 85% pass success rate with six of them into the final third.

Son, who called Gray, Bergvall and Spence "incredible" after the game, was back to his old self with an excellent 45 minutes that brought a confident goal and two inch-perfect assists. The relief on the captain's face when he scored was clear to see and it was another goal against a club he seems to just love scoring against.

"They were brilliant. I think they sensed they needed to [step up] tonight. We are just spread so thin that we’re asking young players and players who haven't played a lot and others who have been playing all the time to go out there and still try to play to our identity, play the football we want to," said Postecoglou of his captain and vice-captain.

"I thought they both were the catalyst for that tonight, with both the football but also their mindset just going out there.

"We had to start strong today, we knew we would probably run out of gas at the end of the game considering the line-up we had out there, coming off Europe on Thursday night. I think the players sensed that and credit to them that they started the game in that way."

It was the second successive Premier League game that Tottenham have scored twice within the opening 10 minutes.

However, on a night when Spurs scored five goals and kept a clean sheet, if there was one note of improvement required, it continues to be the lack of opportunities created for Dominic Solanke.

The 27-year-old battled away up front with his running and hassling but of Tottenham's 18 shots - with nine on target - none came from Solanke. The closest he came was when Son's ball across the six yard box was cut out just in front of him only to bounce back towards Kulusevski to score in his third consecutive game.

Otherwise though, this was just what the doctor ordered and thankfully the medic wasn't Dr Tottenham on this occasion.

A big week continues with the arrival of Manchester United for that cup quarter-final on Thursday night and most of the same Tottenham players must go again, while their visitors will likely make changes aplenty to freshen up.

Spurs will need the crowd roaring them on at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to create an uncomfortable atmosphere for a United side that will be buoyant after their derby win at the Etihad Stadium.

The new chant about Levy and Kulusevski will undoubtedly be heard on a bigger scale but it's essential that there's also plenty of backing for the Tottenham players as they continue to push themselves to the limit and beyond.

This was a step in the right direction for Postecoglou and his players but it needs to be the start of something rather than a blip. For if Spurs can build some momentum as those 10 players start to finally return in the weeks ahead, it's going to make for a bright 2025.

Ange Postecoglou presented with Dominic Solanke Tottenham dilemma as Dejan Kulusevski made to wait

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham side will go into Thursday's Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United in confident mood after putting five past Southampton on Sunday evening. Last securing victory in the Premier League in late November following that brilliant 4-0 win at Man City, Spurs once again showed what they can do going forward as they recorded another high-scoring victory.

James Maddison put them on their way to three precious points after hitting the opener with only 37 seconds on the clock following some terrific play from Djed Spence. The right-back, who was handed his first start in a Tottenham shirt, went on a positive run from his own half before playing in his teammate with a lovely pass with the outside of his boot.

Southampton have really struggled at times upon their return to the top flight and Tottenham ensured it was going to be one of those nights for the hosts as Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski made it 3-0 with quickfire goals in the 12th and 14th minute respectively. Spurs weren't to stop there, though, as Pape Matar Sarr and Maddison increased the scoreline prior to half-time to put the result beyond any doubt.

As is usually the case when teams are in cruise control at the break and with a healthy lead to boot, the visitors weren't to inflict even more misery on their opponents as Southampton remained tight at the back in the second half. Brennan Johnson had Tottenham's best opportunity in the closing stages but he couldn't convert Timo Werner's cross when in a promising position.

Amid Tottenham's red-hot form in front of goal at St Mary's, striker Dominic Solanke unfortunately wasn't to add to his tally for the season despite Spurs' dominance. Working as hard as ever and linking up well with his teammates, openings on goal were extremely hard to come by for the 27-year-old.

In fact, a glance at his statistics from the game (via FotMob) shows that he only managed one shot on goal in his 82 minutes on the pitch, with that effort coming in the 14th minute. However, a look at the replay of the opportunity seems to suggest that Solanke didn't make contact with Son's cross as a block from Jan Bednarek put the ball on a plate for Kulusevski to score.

Regardless of whether it was a shot on goal for Solanke or not, Spurs are just not creating enough opportunities for the England international. The former Bournemouth man was seen as the missing piece of the puzzle to Tottenham's attack but there have been a number of games where he has had slim pickings in terms of chances.

That was evident in the lead up to the Aston Villa game in November where he hit a double as he had only managed three shots on goal in his five Tottenham appearances prior to that 4-1 win. Solanke brings so much to the Tottenham team in terms of his work rate, energy, pressing and link-up play but he is a striker and he is ultimately judged on goals.

While others around him are certainly benefitting from what he brings to the team, everyone would like to see the favour returned and the striker presented with a glut of chances as he proved at Bournemouth last season that he knows where the net is. Still, seven goals to his name this season isn't a bad return but it could be a lot higher if the opportunities on goal were there for him.

Tottenham's 5-0 half-time lead on the south coast presented Postecoglou with the perfect opportunity to rotate Son at half-time following his one goal and two assists. Struggling for form recently and not doing enough in the final in Tottenham's hour of need, the South Korean will have been given a huge lift ahead of Thursday's Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United.

Further Spurs changes came later in the contest as Alfie Dorrington came on for his senior Tottenham bow in place of Spence and Werner, who was heavily criticised by his manager for his showing at Rangers last Thursday, took the place of Maddison. Without his captain and vice-captain on the pitch, Fraser Forster was the man who took the armband for the closing stages of the contest.

Many have tipped Kulusevski to be a future Tottenham captain due to his growing role in the Spurs team and also because he has taken on the honour for the Swedish national side. It does look like the midfielder is going to have to bide his time to captain Spurs, however, as it was the experienced shot-stopper who led Tottenham from the 77th minute onwards at his former home.

Kulusevski was once again key to Tottenham's victory and he will be intent on dragging Tottenham kicking and screaming to a Carabao Cup semi-final when they face Manchester United on Thursday. A very good night for Tottenham as they put their poor form to bed at Southampton, now they need to do likewise over the next week to give fans some festive cheer ahead of the holiday season.

Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the media following Tottenham's comfortable 5-0 victory against Southampton on Sunday and we've got the full transcript from his press conference.

Spurs opened the scoring just 45 seconds in when a powerful run from Djed Spence through the middle of the pitch ended with a pinpoint ball poked through to James Maddison and the midfielder fired it through the keeper's legs and into the net. Son Heung-min doubled the visitors' lead minutes later when he smashed home a deep, curling headed on Maddison cross.

Only 13 minutes were gone when Dejan Kulusevski tapped home a loose ball after a Son cross deflected back into his path. Then on 24 minutes, Destiny Udogie won the ball back in his own half, sprinted up the pitch, found Son and the skipper picked out the run of Pape Matar Sarr and the young midfielder dribbled around a defender and fired home on the slide to make it 4-0.

Just before the break, Son played in Maddison with a clever ball and the midfielder turned on a sixpence on the touchline and managed to squeeze in a curling effort from a tight angle into the top right corner. The second half saw the visitors step down the gears and conserve their energy with Saints unable to find a way through.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Postecoglou after the match. Scroll down for a full transcript from the press conference at St Mary's Stadium.

What did you make of that positive performance and fast start?

Really proud of the players. We obviously had a tough away European fixture on Thursday night. Three full Premier League debuts tonight, what did you make of the two starters in Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence?

There was a nice moment between you and fans, how did that feel after the moments following the Bournemouth game?

Yeah, look, again, I’m trying to separate me and my feelings from what we’re trying to do here. Like I said after the Bournemouth game, the ones that travel are obviously very hardcore. They support this club and they were disappointed with that. They made the trip tonight and would have enjoyed particularly the first 45. Ange Postecoglou has provided an update on Destiny Udogie after the defender was forced off with an injury in the first half of Tottenham's huge victory over Southampton.

Spurs smashed five past the Saints on Sunday evening but Udogie was forced off and replaced by Pedro Porro after playing a huge role in his side's fourth goal. Postecoglou revealed after the match that the Italian felt some tightness in his quad so he was taken off as a precaution.

The Spurs boss said: "We'll see how he is. He felt a bit tight in his quad. To be fair, he wanted to continue but we can't take any risks at the moment. So we took him off with Sonny. I don't think it's anything significant at this stage and more precautionary."

All associated with Spurs will be hoping Udogie's injury is not anything significant, with a handful of players already unavailable for selection. Rodrigo Bentancur continues to be suspended while Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert are all out injured and Mikey Moore is recovering from illness.

Udogie's injury may mean more game time for Djed Spence, who impressed against the Saints and helped set up James Maddison's opener within the first minute. On the right-back, who can also play at left-back, Postecoglou said: "Djed has had to bide his time.

"To be fair, it's the one area of the pitch where we've had cover this year with Archie [Gray] playing at right-back, so he's had to be patient. It's a testament to him and the coaches who have worked with him in training that he could come on today. We needed him for sure, not just to play but to make an impact and he did. Great reward for his patience and perseverance."

Ange Postecoglou is speaking at his press conference following Tottenham's 5-0 victory at Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

Tottenham made a remarkable start just 45 seconds in when a powerful run from Djed Spence through the middle of the pitch ended with a pinpoint ball poked through to James Maddison and the midfielder fired it through the keeper's legs and into the net.

Captain Son Heung-min doubled the visitors' lead minutes later when he smashed home a deep, curling headed on Maddison cross. Then only 13 minutes were gone when Dejan Kulusevski tapped home a loose ball after a Son cross deflected back into his path.

Only 24 minutes in, it was 4-0. Destiny Udogie won the ball back in his own half, sprinted up the pitch, found Son and the skipper picked out the run of Pape Matar Sarr and the young midfielder dribbled around a defender and fired home on the slide.

Udogie came off soon after that but there was another goal before the break. Son played in Maddison with a clever ball and the midfielder turned on a sixpence on the touchline and managed to squeeze in a curling effort from a tight angle into the top right corner.

The second half saw the visitors step down the gears and the Saints unable to find a way through.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold is among those putting the questions to Postecoglou after the match. Scroll down for his latest updates from the press conference at St Mary's Stadium.

Aaron Ramsdale's Djed Spence and Archie Gray Tottenham words backfire as Daniel Levy message sent

Tottenham registered their first Premier League victory since late November after recording a 5-0 win against Southampton on Sunday evening. Following Thursday evening's 1-1 draw against Rangers in the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou shuffled his pack and handed Djed Spence and Lucas Bergvall their first Premier League starts in a Spurs shirt.

Timo Werner was one of those to drop out the starting XI from the Rangers game, which wasn't that much of a surprise to Tottenham fans going on his half-time substitution and the head coach's post-match comments. Needing to make a fast start to proceedings, the visitors did exactly that with only 37 seconds on the clock as Spence teed up James Maddison for the opener.

It was to get even better for Spurs on 12 minutes as Son Heung-min found the back of the net with a cool finish inside the box after Maddison's cross was deflected into his path. Their lead was to be extended even further as Dejan Kulusevski got his name on the scoresheet from a matter of yards out and then Pape Matar Sarr showed some brilliant footwork to find the net after some good work between Destiny Udogie and Son.

Plenty of Southampton supporters left the stadium after Sarr's strike, meaning they avoided seeing their side concede a fifth goal on the stroke of half-time as Maddison helped himself to a second of the contest from a tight angle. Tottenham weren't to add to their scoreline in the second half but the most important thing was they put their recent woes to bed. Here are five things we spotted in the game at St Mary's:

Spence stars

Spence has had to be incredibly patient when it has come to getting a first Tottenham start following his move from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022. Almost 30 months on from his transfer to the club, the right-back came into the Spurs XI from the off at Southampton in the place of Pedro Porro.

At a time when Tottenham have been dealing with a host of injuries at present, Spence has been desperately unlucky not to feature more for the north London club. It has been evident in recent games that Porro requires a rest, with the Spaniard only getting 28 minutes on the touchline ahead of Thursday evening's vital Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Manchester United due to Udogie's first-half injury.

Spence was to make an instant impact on proceedings following a driving run from his own half to play in Maddison with the outside of his boot with only 37 seconds on the clock. It was outstanding play from the incoming player as he demonstrated to all why he should be playing more regularly.

The ex-England Under-21 international was a constant outlet for Spurs down the right and he was very impressive whenever he was on the ball. He did likewise when moved across to the left in wake of Udogie's injury seconds after Sarr had made it 4-0, before later making way in the 77th minute of the contest.

Ramsdale comments backfire

On the subject of Spence, former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was forced to eat his words 37 seconds into the contest following the full-back's starring role in Maddison's opener. Part of the TNT Sports lineup as he is currently not available for Southampton due to injury, the shot-stopper gave his thoughts on the game and pointed to Spence and Archie Gray's inclusion after a lack of game time as something Saints could possibly use to their advantage.

"I think for us, no matter if they had every player out there, every game is a big opportunity," he explained. "Especially the way we play people sometimes don't know how to deal with us as long as we don't hurt ourselves.

"But tonight, especially with their absences, Archie Gray playing centre-half, he's a wonderful player but to be playing centre-half for the second time for Tottenham at 18 [years of age] in a big game where both teams have struggled of late brings pressure.

"I remember watching Djed Spence in the Championship go up with [Nottingham] Forest, so we know he's a great player as well. To come out from the cold almost and compete in the Premier League is going to be tough, so hopefully we can use that to our advantage and push on for three points."

That's not exactly how things panned out for Southampton as they slumped to a 5-0 defeat, with Tottenham putting themselves on their way to victory 37 seconds into the contest courtesy of Spence's sublime run.

Kids called up

The true extent of Tottenham's injury and suspension crisis was laid bare at St Mary's. Having a number of experienced players on the substitutes' bench to call upon one week ago in the 4-3 defeat to Chelsea, that wasn't exactly the case on the south coast.

Unable to select Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven this week due to the injuries the pair picked up on their returns against Chelsea, Yves Bissouma was also absent through suspension and joined Rodrigo Bentancur in the stands. That meant that a host of academy players were included along with the likes of Porro, Werner and Brennan Johnson on the bench at Southampton.

In terms of Tottenham players on the bench with Premier League experience, Will Lankshear was next in line with one minute of action to his name in the recent 1-1 draw with Fulham. Brandon Austin has been on the Tottenham bench as second-choice goalkeeper a handful of times in the past but the academy graduate still doesn't have a senior Spurs appearance to his name.

Alfie Dorrington, Callum Olusesi, Maeson King and Malachi Hardy made up the bench for Tottenham at Southampton. Spurs' first-half rout allowed Dorrington to make his senior bow as he replaced Spence for the final 15 minutes of the contest.

A message for Levy

It was all one way at St Mary's as Tottenham raced into a three-goal lead with only 14 minutes on the clock. In desperate need of a win to put their recent poor form to bed, Spurs' start to proceedings couldn't have gone any better.

Amid Tottenham's results of late, chairman Daniel Levy has come in for plenty of criticism from some Tottenham fans. A number of supporters at St Mary's on Sunday evening had a message for 62-year-old as they chanted his name a number of times over the course of the game.

It went: "I don't care about Levy, he don't care about me, all I care about is Kulusevski."

Perfect preparation for midweek

Southampton proved to be the ideal opponents as Tottenham returned to winning ways in the Premier League. In desperate need of three points after their woes of late, the opening to the game was extremely pleasing to see from a Tottenham perspective as they raced into a 3-0 lead with only 14 minutes on the clock.

Sarr and another goal from Maddison ensured that Tottenham had a healthy five-goal cushion going into the break. As good as Tottenham are in attack when at the top of their game, it was all too easy for them at times and looked like a training exercise as they cut through Saints at will.

It was very much the perfect game for them to restore some confidence ahead of Thursday evening's Carabao Cup showdown against Manchester United, with Maddison and Son the main beneficiaries after failing to hit the heights recently. The result also allowed Postecoglou to give his Spurs captain a breather ahead of this week's cup game as Johnson replaced him at the interval.

After a number of disappointing games of late, everything went to plan for Postecoglou and Tottenham.

Tottenham player ratings vs Southampton with Maddison and Son brilliant as Sarr and Spence impress

Tottenham won 5-0 against Southampton at St Mary's Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday and here are our player ratings.

Ange Postecoglou made five changes to his Spurs side that drew 1-1 at Rangers in Europa League and he had more players missing with Yves Bissouma joining Rodrigo Bentancur on the suspension list, with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Ben Davies, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert all out injured and Mikey Moore recovering from illness.

Eighteen-year-old midfielder Archie Gray was again named alongside Radu Dragusin in the middle of the defence and another 18-year-old Lucas Bergvall and Djed Spence came in for their first Premier League starts. Brennan Johnson dropped to a young bench, which was made up of five teenagers with two of them just 16-years-old and another 17-year-old.

Spurs made a lightning start when a great run from Spence through the middle ended with a terrific ball poked through to James Maddison and he fired it through the keeper's legs and into the net just 45 seconds into the contest.

Son Heung-min doubled the lead just minutes later when he smashed home a deep, curling Maddison cross from the right that was headed into his path. Then only 13 minutes were up when Dejan Kulusevski slotted home a loose ball after a Son cross was deflected his way.

Just 24 minutes in and it was 4-0. Destiny Udogie won the ball back in his own half, sprinted up the pitch, found Son and the skipper picked out the run of Pape Matar Sarr and the young midfielder dribbled around a defender and fired home on the slide.

It became 5-0 just before the break. Son played in Maddison with a lovely ball and the midfielder turned on the touchline and managed to squeeze in a curling effort from a tight angle into the top right corner.

Spurs stepped down a few gears in the second half but the home side could still not find a way past them as the scoreline at half-time remained throughout.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings from the match:

Fraser Forster

Mainly a quiet night with the work done in front of him. Southampton had a couple of chances but mostly were played offside by Spurs' defensive line. 7

Djed Spence

His first start for Spurs and he started it in spectacular fashion with a great run in the opening 30 seconds before playing a ball into Maddison's path to score. Was involved in the build-up to the second goal as well before switching to the left when Udogie came off. Was calm on the ball and a constant threat whenever he ran forward. Was taken off with 15 minutes to go which suggests he could be used again on Thursday after Udogie's exit. 8

Radu Dragusin

Led the backline again well and showed some really nice vision with his long passes. 7

Archie Gray

Another game in central defence under his belt and the 18-year-old made an important late goal-saving tackle after switching to left-back. 8

Destiny Udogie

Played a big part in Spurs' fourth goal with a tackle to the left of the box before running up the pitch with the ball. The Italian came off before the half hour mark 7

Pape Matar Sarr

Took his goal superbly on the run from Son's pass, dribbling past a defender and firing home on the slide. A constant menace to Southampton and always looking for the ball. A machine of an engine. 8

Lucas Bergvall

A tidy full Premier League debut for the 18-year-old Swede. Cramped up 86 minutes in but this was a big boost for him to get the full game into his legs. 7

James Maddison

Finished well through the keeper's legs for Tottenham's early goal and then curled in a deep cross that was headed on to Son to score. Somehow squeezed in Spurs' fifth goal with a curling effort into the top right corner before half-time. Kept running in the second half even as Tottenham stepped down the gears. Two goals and an assist on a good night. 9

Dejan Kulusevski

Knocked the ball home from close range for Spurs' third goal. Played the full game first on the right wing, then on the left and then in a deeper role. Never stops running. 8

Dominic Solanke

Worked hard as usual but shows that even on a night of goals for Spurs they're not creating enough for him. Not a single shot for him. Still played his part with his hold-up play. 7

Son Heung-min

Clinically powered home the visitors' second and played in Sarr for the third. It was his cross that led indirectly to Kulusevski's goal as well. Had an effort pushed on to the post before half-time which was given as a corner for some reason and then sent another effort at the keeper. Played a lovely ball into the path of Maddison for Spurs' fifth goal before the break. Given a rest for the second half after a first period that brought a goal and two assists as well as being involved in another goal. 9

Subs

Pedro Porro

Came on earlier than anticipated with Udogie's exit and did what was needed of him. 6

Brennan Johnson

Put in plenty of effort but didn't find a way through. Sent a late effort over but may have been offside. 5

Timo Werner

Came on for 15 minutes and struggled mostly until hitting a cross that Johnson sent over the bar. 5

Alfie Dorrington

Came on for his debut and was solid at the back in the final 15 minutes. 6

Will Lankshear

Replaced Solanke for the final minutes. N/A

Tottenham handed worrying Destiny Udogie injury scare in Southampton thumping

Description

Tottenham left-back Destiny Udogie was forced off in Sunday night's Premier League clash with Southampton due to injury.

The Italian helped Ange Postecoglou's men race into a 4-0 lead at St Mary's Stadium. James Maddison, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Pape Matar Sarr were all on the scoresheet in a thrilling opening 25 minutes.

However, Udogie was unable to continue past the fourth goal after being involved in the build-up to Sarr's goal. After winning the ball back from Kyle Walker-Peters, the left-back ran up the pitch before the midfielder showed great composure.

Pedro Porro, who dropped to the bench in place of Djed Spence, came on in his place with Spence moving to replace Udogie on the left side of Spurs' defence.

Udogie has started every Premier League game this season and has emerged as Postecoglou’s number one left-back. The extent of his injury is currently unknown but reports from Optus Sport have suggested it is a back issue.

Postecoglou will provide an update on the Italy international after the game at Southampton. Udogie missed the Europa League win over Ferencvaros in October due to a hamstring injury; a similar problem had forced him to miss the end of last season and the European Championships with Italy.

Spurs’ goals did dry up after the substitute but Maddison added to his tally in the dying seconds of the first-half to make it 5-0. The scoreline was the first time that Tottenham have scored five goals in the first half of a Premier League game.
