Chelsea will look to continue their stellar start to the Premier League season with another win when they face Tottenham on the road next weekend.

The Blues secured their third consecutive league win, defeating Southampton 5-1 on the south coast on Wednesday night. Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho were all on the scoresheet in what was a perfect night for the visitors.

After conceding just one goal, Chelsea remain the team to have conceded the less goals in the top-flight (15) - only Arsenal (14) and Liverpool (11) have conceded less. The victory on the south coast saw Chelsea climb to second in the table - level on points (28) with Arsenal and seven points from leaders Liverpool.

Ahead of their trip to the north London, football.london has taken a look at the latest injury news ahead of the huge clash with Tottenham on Sunday (4.30pm).

Reece James

Injury: Hamstring.

What Maresca has said: "James is getting better but it is weeks to come back. For sure it is a big loss. Wes was doing fantastic, but we need to assess and respond."

Possible return date: Unknown.

Wesley Fofana

The France international limped off on 60 minutes during the Blues' win over Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon after suffering a hamstring injury. Maresca confirmed after the game that Fofana could be sidelined for up to five weeks but the player himself later uploaded on his Instagram to say the injury was not too serious.

Injury: Hamstring.

What Maresca has said: "For sure, it's a big loss because Wes was doing fantastic in every game but we need to accept we have to find a different solution."

Possible return date: Unknown.

Omari Kellyman

The 19-year-old remains sidelined with a hamstring injury and is yet to make his first appearance of the season.

Injury: Hamstring.

What Maresca has said: "The rest, some of them are better, some of them are still a doubt and we need to wait," Maresca said last month.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed which goalkeeper shall be starting on Sunday when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Maresca chose to rotate his squad and it immediately paid off as Axel Disasi headed home inside ten minutes for the Blues. Joe Aribo equalised quickly for the relegation-threatened hosts but that was as good as it got for them.

Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke had made it 3-1 before Jack Stephens was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair. That ended the game as a contest with Chelsea able to cruise to victory.

Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho's second-half goals sealed the deal for the Blues and moved them up to second in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Liverpool who drew at Newcastle United. As mentioned, Chelsea rotated for this game and started Filip Jorgensen but Maresca has confirmed he will not be in goal when they face Spurs on Sunday.

"That day we are going to play Sanchez and ten players," Maresca told the media at full-time. "The only one that is sure is Sanchez."

Sanchez has gained his fair share of critics this season having made mistakes but his record is not too bad on paper. He has conceded 14 goals in 13 appearances and kept three clean sheets in that time.

Ange Postecoglou believes Mohamed Salah holds the key to Son Heung

Ange Postecoglou believes that those doubting Tottenham captain Son Heung-min need only look at Liverpool star Mohamed Salah for their answer.

Son has struggled to reach his previous standards so far this season, having scored in just two of his 10 Premier League games with four goals in 14 matches in all competitions. The 32-year-old has had a campaign fragmented by a hamstring injury and found himself taken off by Postecoglou in many of the Tottenham games since returning.

When asked whether the expectations of Son should change as he gets older, Postecoglou grinned widely.

"I think there were questions about Mo [Salah] maybe a year or so ago," said the Australian. "I would be wary about doing that, go for it! It might help me if you write him off!

"I don't get that sense. I still feel from a physical output and the quality he has and certainly from a mentality point of view, I haven't seen it. What I do know is, from my own experience, the end comes pretty quickly. It's not falling off a cliff but you find with a lot of great players that all of a sudden it's gone from bang to bang, it's not a slow deterioration.

"I don't see that in Sonny, I still think he's got a hell of a lot of quality and from a physical standpoint, the way he looks after himself; I don't see his abilities diminishing just due to the age factor at the moment. I don’t see that. You weigh up the output of it and he is not at the level so far this year that he has been in previous years but that's a pretty high standard he's had in the past.

"Can he get there this year? I still think he can. I think a lot of that is down to consistent game time. He's had a bit of a disrupted start this year where's he's had a couple of setbacks where he hasn't played regularly. I think with Sonny the more regularly he plays so the increase in that output. So the answer is no, I don’t think so, and I'd be wary about writing him off."

Son is someone who wears his heart on his sleeve, whether it's the joy of playing for Tottenham or his country or the despair at having to come off the pitch when his number is held aloft.

"He’s no different in training. With Sonny, what you see is what you get on a daily basis. He’s a very optimistic and very energetic and enthusiastic kind of person and you know when he’s down because it stands out like a sore thumb, but that rarely happens," said Postecoglou.

"He tackles things pretty determinedly and optimistically and I don't have an issue with that. Sometimes as a manager, you get annoyed when you know that players are just putting things on for a crowd, for a reaction when it’s not really them. That annoys me more than someone just being themselves. Sonny, like I said, is what you see is what you get. Exactly the same person on a daily basis."

Spurs are struggling with injuries and absences right now and Postecoglou currently has seven first team players unavailable for the trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Thursday evening.

With so many games this season and matches only become faster in the English game and more frequent in European competition, does Postecoglou wish he had started the campaign with a bigger squad? The Australian thought for a moment before answering.

"It just depends. A bigger squad with just numbers no. A bigger squad of players who are able to contribute is more important to me," he said. "I don’t think we had the capacity to do that. We’re three transfer windows into building a team, a squad, a playing style so I think we’ll get to that point and that’s what we need to keep reinforcing, where we have a squad and a group of players who can compete in the elite European competitions and domestically.

"Some of it this year has been important. We’ve had to soft tissue injuries obviously and we’ve got three at the moment but we’ve had Vicario, Romero and illnesses and suspensions. You can’t legislate for it, they always happen but you just hope they spread out more than they have for us. No doubt, we’ve still got work to do with the squad and the team which I don’t think would be surprising to anyone."

On whether the squad size will increase with the January transfer window, he added: "It’s a bit tricky and a lot will depend on what happens in this next three weeks, who we get back in that time, where we sit with the health of the squad at the beginning of January.

"January is a tricky one. I wouldn’t expect us to do too many significant things in January but if January 1 we’re in exactly the same position we are now with nine players out I reckon we’d be doing something."

Another aspect to Tottenham's spending this year has been the amount of teenagers signed with Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-hyeok all brought in for around £80million, with Croatian centre-back Luka Vuskovic joining them next summer.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has said that Chelsea will dominate over the coming years because of the sheer volume of talented young players they have signed. Surely the same goes for Tottenham in that regard?

"The theory, yes. The reality… you’ve also got to look at… there’s a relevance to expenditure as well. They’ve got some serious talent there," said Postecoglou. "But whether they all fulfil their potential is the unknown with all young players.

"So I think that’s why most clubs don’t go all young because they feel you need some experience or some guiding through that process of players developing. In theory, it’s probably the way to go I believe when you’re building a side. But it’s not always… unless you have a sheer volume of players, which Chelsea do, if two or three don’t make it through, you’ve got enough there.

"I don’t think we’re in the same boat in terms of numbers. With us it would mean all the ones we’ve signed will all end up fulfilling our potential. That’s the bit of the unknown. I think we’re probably a bit different even though the underlying premise of building from youth is there. I think they’re a little bit different in the way they’ve gone about it."

If he is fit enough after his recent illness, Tottenham's trip to Bournemouth will bring Dominic Solanke back to the Vitality Stadium for the first time since his £60million summer move to north London from the south coast. His head coach is hoping the desire to take on his former employers will benefit Spurs.

"I’m hoping that extra percentage comes from just him getting back. He wanted to play at the weekend too but he couldn’t get out of his car let alone run around pitch," said Postecoglou. "Hopefully he will get through training, we’ve got another 24 hours to game time and I know how closely connected he feels with Bournemouth because it was his way back to having the career he wanted.

"Through Bournemouth, he got a move here, got back in the England squad and all these kind of things. His journey of starting at some big clubs, not quite working out, Bournemouth were the ones who invested in him, worked with him. He spent a lot of time there, I’m sure he wants to do well not because he wants to hurt them but because he wants to show them that everything they invested in him is appreciated."

Tottenham need to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after Sunday's draw with Fulham because the table is so tight that a victory can rocket you up the standings and a defeat can see you plummet. Currently just six points separate fourth-placed Brighton and 13th-placed Bournemouth. The Cherries can leapfrog seventh-placed Spurs if they take all three points from their visitors on Thursday night. The compact nature of the table reminds Postecoglou of the land he grew up in.

"That’s Australian sport where with salary caps and everything, that’s what you get. It’s unusual for the Premier League where you really only have one team which is separated from the rest. I think it makes it exciting because it means every game has something on it," he said.

"It’s either euphoria or doom and gloom with nowhere in between, but I get a sense of that's how the season is going to go. Obviously Liverpool is a bit of an outlier, all the other clubs seem to have hit a patch where they have issues and you wouldn't think a team like Villa would go six or seven games without a win because of their performances and consistency, obviously Man City with what they’re going through.

"Most clubs are hitting some significantly rough patches for one reason or another and it may break open but I wouldn’t sense that will happen until into the New Year if it does happen. I think for the next couple of months it will be pretty tight."

Tottenham 'target' Ligue 1 breakout star but face competition from European giants

Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs rumoured to be interested in Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov, but face competition from one of their Premier League rivals, as well as a European giant.

Khusanov, 20, is a Uzbekistan international and he had a brief spell in Belarus prior to his move to France in the summer of 2023. This season, the youngster has already started nine Ligue 1 games and has made 13 appearances in total across all competitions.

A report from The Telegraph this week claims Spurs, along with Newcastle United, are chasing the centre back ahead of the January transfer window. The article claims Khusanov was signed by Lens for a nominal fee of €100,000 only 18 months ago, and he could now command a fee in the region of £25m.

It has been suggested Spurs are weighing up whether they need defensive reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window due to the injury problems of centre back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. The former has been sidelined with a toe injury since the middle of November, while the latter is currently out with a hamstring problem.

If Spurs are to pursue a move for Ligue 1 breakout star, Khusanov, they will reportedly face competition from European giants Paris Saint-Germain. A recent article from French outlet Foot Mercato claims Luis Enrique's side will also be in the market for a central defender next month.

The article suggests PSG's hierarchy have already met with the player's entourage, although this hasn't resulted in a formal approach as of yet. Khusanov is under contract at Lens until at least the summer of 2027, but PSG could jump at the opportunity to sign him should he become available.

Ange Postecoglou hints at Tottenham striker transfer after huge Jonathan David update

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has offered an honest verdict on the possibility of bringing another striker to the club. Just this past summer, Dominic Solanke joined Spurs from Bournemouth with Richarlison having joined the club in 2022, 12 months before the departure of Harry Kane.

Under Postecoglou, Spurs have rarely struggled for goals but attacking injuries have exposed a lack of options. Solanke has already missed three games since his arrival while Richarlison has played just 173 minutes of football in the 2024/25 season.

Captain Son Heung-min and new signing Wilson Odobert have also missed significant periods with Postecoglou having to regularly rely on the likes of Brennan Johnson, loannee Timo Werner and academy ace Mikey Moore. With that in mind, Postecoglou was recently asked about signing another striker and his answer was certainly telling.

"Yeah, there is no doubt because when you add Wilson to that, even Mikey, we had Dom out at the weekend, you hope that alleviates," he said in a press conference. "With Wilson it's long-term, hopefully Mikey by the turn of year will be back as well, but he's 17.

"With Richy it has been frustrating because I see the potential in him and to be fair when he's been fit he's always made an impact, for me anyway. I think back to the start of last year and when he came back into the team during the year he went on a scoring run.

"Even the little games he's played this year, he's made an impact. So, you know, that's what you kind of hold on to, but there's no doubt we need some bolstering in that front third over the next couple of transfer windows.

"Dom coming in has been great, but again we can't overload him either, because ultimately, you know, even if he stays fit and nothing happens, performance will invariably drop if his energy levels drop. So it's something we're aware of and need to plan for."

Before Tottenham pushed to sign Solanke, the likes of Jonathan David, Santiago Gimenez and Viktor Gyokeres were all believed to be options. Though all three appear likely to depart down the line, David seems set on an imminent departure from Lille, judging by the latest update.

According to the Athletic, David has been offered a new contract, but is expected to depart France in 2025 as a free agent. Spurs are one of many clubs that rate the Canada international with his representatives listening to proposals and setting out expectations for interested parties.

Considering the finances involved, it would be bizarre for Tottenham to not show an interest, especially given the issued faced by Postecoglou over the last few months.

word message after Ange Postecoglou injury update

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has posted a heartfelt message on social media following Ange Postecoglou's injury update before his side face Bournemouth. The 26-year-old has missed the last three games with a foot issue picked up over the November international break while representing Argentina.

Alongside Romero, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Wilson Odobert, Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur (through suspension), are currently missing with Postecoglou offering an update on the condition of his squad ahead of the trip to Bournemouth on Thursday.

"Everyone from the weekend got through OK, Archie [Gray] obviously got a knock but he's recovered well," he admitted in a press conference. "Dom's due to train today, he's still not 100 per cent but he's definitely improved from the weekend, so we'll see how he goes through training today.

"The other injured guys are inching closer but not available." The final part of his update confirms the five aforementioned names will remain out. Of the group dealing with injuries, Romero looked to be the closest towards a return with Postecoglou later issuing a thorough update on his recovery.

"He's due to have his last session or last couple of sessions with the rehab guys, today and tomorrow," he said. "So we're kind of hoping that back into training, potentially by Friday. At the very latest early next week, if everything goes well."

Judging by those honest comments, the centre-back returning for the Europa League clash against Rangers in eight days is possible, but it is perhaps more likely he is back available for that weekend's trip to Southampton in Premier League action.

In the meantime, Romero has been keeping active on Instagram with his wife having recently given birth and the Spurs star has now sent a heartfelt message. Showing a picture of his two children, Romero has reposted the story and captioned it: "Lo mas importante de la vida," which translates to English as "the most important thing in life".

While Romero will certainly be enjoying more time with his family, he will almost certainly be keen to return to full fitness and begin helping Spurs again.

Bournemouth could be without three players for Tottenham as Andoni Iraola provides injury update

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola hopes Lewis Cook can return against Tottenham on Thursday evening. Cook missed Saturday’s 4-2 win at Wolves due to a muscle strain having started in all 12 of the Cherries’ previous league games this season and Iraola does not want to rush the former Leeds midfielder back.

Iraola told a press conference: “He is going to train (on Wednesday) and we will see and ask him if he is going to play. We will ask him.”

Antoine Semenyo returns to contention after a one-game ban, but Luis Sinisterra, Julian Araujo (both thigh) and Alex Scott (knee) remain unavailable. Bournemouth responded to recent back-to-back defeats with victory at Wolves and sit 13th in the table, nine points clear of the relegation zone.

They have beaten both Arsenal and Manchester City at the Vitality Stadium this season, but Iraola is a big admirer of Tottenham – they took six points off the Cherries last season – and expecting another big challenge.

“Their stats are amazing and they are top scorers in the competition,” the Spaniard said. “They have so many threats, especially offensively and they are really good in their position. It’s going to be very difficult.

“The past season we played very well. Even playing well, they beat us 3-1 (at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December), but I think we played well. These games you have to be very good and better than them in the boxes because they are high quality. They are a very good team that I enjoy watching.”

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is poised to make his first return to the Vitality Stadium since his summer move to the Londoners, for a fee which could rise to £65million.

Solanke, who spent five-and-a-half seasons at Bournemouth, has scored six goals for Tottenham in all competitions this season but faces a fitness race to be in contention for Spurs. Iraola added: “I prefer that he doesn’t play against us. But we have prepared the game thinking that he will play.

“He’s very important for them. He is giving them a lot in and out of possession. We know him well, but he also knows everything we do.”

Dominic Solanke could return to the Tottenham squad for Thursday night's Premier League trip to AFC Bournemouth.

The striker was not part of the matchday squad against Fulham at the weekend due to illness. Ange Postecoglou explained he was "under the weather" as Spurs failed to secure all three points. This week, Tottenham travel down south to the Vitality Stadium as they face Solanke's old team. It is the first opportunity the England international will have to come up against his former employer.

Ahead of the game, Postecoglou provided an update on the 27-year-old's well-being when providing the latest team news. "Everyone from the weekend through OK," the Spurs boss said.

"Archie [Gray] got a knock, but he's recovered well. Dom is due to train today. He's still not 100%, but he's much better. The other guys haven't trained yet [with the group]."

One player who won't be in the squad tomorrow night is Cristian Romero. The defender has missed the last two games after suffering a knee injury last month.

"[Romero is] due to have his last couple of sessions with the rehab guys today or tomorrow," the Australian said. "We're hoping that he's back in training by Friday and at the latest early next week."

Centre-back Micky van de Ven is also out with a hamstring injury and has been missing for the last four weeks. Wilson Odobert is recovering from his surgery.

Enzo Maresca faces nightmare Tottenham scenario as Chelsea learn crucial Liverpool lesson

Enzo Maresca could be without two key players when Chelsea face Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend. The Lilywhites will host the Blues on Sunday afternoon as they both look to climb the Premier League table in pursuit of Champions League qualification.

In the meantime, Chelsea must play Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on Wednesday night before Spurs lock horns with Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday evening. With only five points separating the West Londoners in third from Tottenham in seventh, the derby could prove to be season-defining.

If Nicolas Jackson and Pedro Neto are shown a yellow card beforehand, though, they'll be suspended and miss out on the highly anticipated clash. Due to Premier League rules, players who receive a total of five yellow cards in their first 19 games will be given a one-match suspension.

As it stands, there are 30 players on four cautions – two of which are Chelsea players. If a player is booked 10 times across the first 32 Premier League matches of the season, they will be suspended for two games.

With domestic cup competitions underway, it must be pointed out that yellow cards picked up in the Premier League are not carried over to the Carabao Cup or FA Cup. Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana are just two of three players to have been booked more than anybody else this season, with six cautions to their names.

The duo were both given their fifth yellow cards of the campaign against Nottingham Forest in October, missing Chelsea's defeat to Liverpool. Maresca was without key players that could have fired the Blues to victory.

When quizzed on his side's ill-discipline ahead of the clash at Anfield, the Blues boss downplayed any concern and claimed that he's happy to see his players fighting for each other on the pitch. Maresca said: "It’s something we need to improve but overall, I like the team the way they are fighting.

"I like the way they are becoming a team in these kinds of things. I don’t see any problems about that. For sure, there are things that we can control and do better, for sure no doubt, and probably this is one of the things. But if you ask me about the team spirit, the way they are fighting together, the way they are doing things together, I’m very happy."

Jackson and Neto are at risk of missing the Tottenham clash, with four yellow cards under their belt. Meanwhile, there are five Chelsea players currently on three cautions: Moises Caicedo, Levi Colwill, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Robert Sanchez.

Ange Postecoglou has admitted Tottenham need to bolster their attacking options in the next few transfer windows.

Dominic Solanke joined Spurs from Bournemouth in a deal worth £65million in the summer and is currently the only fit senior striker in the squad. Richarlison is currently nursing a thigh injury and is not expected to return until January, while teenager Mikey Moore is expected to be out for a while longer with illness.

Tottenham have also been without winger Wilson Odobert for most of the season after he underwent surgery on a hamstring injury. Speaking ahead of Tottenham's trip to Bournemouth on Thursday, Postecoglou told journalists he expects to add attacking talent to the squad in the future.

The Australian said: "Yeah, there is no doubt because when you add Wilson to that, even Mikey, we had Dom out on weekend, you hope that alleviates. With Wilson it's long-term, hopefully Mikey by the turn of year will be back as well, but he's 17.
