Sergio Reguilon is hoping to terminate his Tottenham contract, according to reports. The Spaniard has failed to make a single appearance for Spurs this season after failing to secure a move out of the club next summer.

Ange Postecoglou was keen to ship out the £120,000-per-week defender after spending last season on loan at Manchester United and Brentford. He spent the first half of the campaign at Old Trafford, making 12 appearances, before making the switch to west London for the second part of the season.

But following his return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer, Reguilon has been left in the wildness and out-of-favour under Postecoglou. In fact, Reguilon has been named in the matchday squad just once this season - against Coventry in the Carabao Cup - but remained as an unused substitute.

Now, according to The Sunday Mirror, it has been reported that Reguilon is ready to rip up his Tottenham contract and find a new club. The 27-year-old's current deal runs out at the end of the season but he is keen to leave before then in search of regular game time, having not pulled on a Spurs shirt since April 2022.

Clubs from Turkey and Saudi Arabia are monitoring his situation and are keen to sign him, despite the fact Reguilon has not played a competitive game of football in six months. Reguilon last played for Brentford against Newcastle on the final day of last season, capping off an impressive loan spell at the Bees.

Reguilon travelled with the rest of his Tottenham teammates to Ferencvaros last month, but wasn't named as part of the matchday contingent after being left out of their Europa League squad.

Explaining why Reguilon travelled to Hungary, Postecoglou said: "Sergio [Reguilon] is a Tottenham player, that’s why he’s here. We like to have 20 players for training, we’ve also brought some young players. They had a game last night and we didn’t want to disrupt them too much."

'Centre stage' - National media all pick out same star Tottenham player after Man City thrashing

Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways on Saturday with a significant 4-0 thrashing of current champions Manchester City.

James Maddison was centre stage as he scored a brace in the first half before Pedro Porro put the result beyond doubt with a third after the break. To make matters worse for the hosts, Spurs substitutes Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson combined for a fourth in stoppage time.

Ange Postecoglou 's side are now sixth in the Premier League standings after 12 games and three points off top four. Defeat for City keeps them second with a visit to Anfield to come next weekend.

Here, football.london takes a look at how the national media reported on Spurs' huge win over Manchester City in the Premier League.

Mike McGrath wrote for The Telegraph: "For a man who likes to be the “main man” at family roast dinners, it has been a quiet time for James Maddison recently. Hooked at half-time last month and on the bench more often than not since, he would have been on it again at the Etihad Stadium were Rodrigo Bentancur not banned for a racial slur aimed at his own captain.

"However, like at the Toby Carvery, he cannot be starved of the limelight for too long, such is Maddison’s character. On his 28th birthday, he was centre stage in Tottenham’s stunning win at Manchester City with his two first-half goals; blows which the Premier League champions never recovered from.

"It has been a long two weeks for Maddison during an international break when he was not called upon by Lee Carsley. Perhaps being overlooked for England played a part in his performance against City. He was fired up, energetic to the point of being manic in central midfield, before showing calmness when chances were presented to him in the penalty area."

Matthew Cooper wrote for The Mirror: "James Maddison celebrated his 28th birthday in style as he starred in a brilliant win for Spurs, netting a brace.

"Maddison scored his first after latching onto a brilliant cross from Kulusevski, while his second came after some excellent interplay with Son on the edge of the box. He was excellent throughout the game and his performance provided a timely reminder of his qualities to incoming England boss Thomas Tuchel.

"Maddison has not featured for England since he was axed by Gareth Southgate ahead of Euro 2024. He will be eyeing a way back into the squad once Tuchel officially takes charge next year and more performances like the one he put in today will surely see him return."

Richard Jolly wrote for The Independent: "While Rodri gazed on from the stands, the dominant figure was James Maddison. Perhaps a fit Rodri would have prevented his seven-minute double – Maddison was left unmarked for each, beautifully as he took them – as the recalled, resurgent Englishman upstaged the City manager and award winner.

"He once infamously said that, when he goes out for a roast dinner with his family, he wants to be the main man. He turned this evening into his 28th birthday party.

"Tottenham cemented their status as the division’s great enigmas. They have recorded a remarkable Manchester double: after winning 3-0 at Old Trafford, they went one better at the Etihad. Yet they had just lost at home to Ipswich. Angeball can be something of an oddball, but on such nights it is glorious for Tottenham."

'Have a night off' - Man City trolled for what they did after Tottenham defeat

Manchester City were the subject of brutal social media trolling after they shared highlights of their 4-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham have proven themselves to be Pep Guardiola's bogey team over the years, so with the Spaniard on the verge of his first-ever five-game losing streak of his career he might have been dreading Saturday's fixture.

Man City started brightly though eventually over the course of 90 minutes they were picked apart by Spurs' rampant attack - the goals coming from James Maddison (x2), Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson - whilst Ange Postecoglou got his defensive tactics spot on.

When a team suffers such a defeat, they usually slink off into the night after their post-match media duties and the work begins to rectify what went wrong.

In Man City's case here, uploaded to their X account at 10pm was a 'highlights' package from the game. One X user responded: "What team posts a highlight comp of a 4-0 home loss," followed by a string of laughing crying emojis, whilst another quipped: "I get we have jobs lads but come on whoever made this could’ve been given the night off."

The two-minute long video opened with Ballon d'or winner Rodri - who missed the match injured for the hosts - presented with his trophy before kick-off. You'd have thought the end of that clip would have been the end of it all for Man City, as one fan pointed out: "Our highlight was the first 2 seconds."

That moment is followed by replays of all four Spurs goals with the odd Erling Haaland or Phil Foden missed chance littered chance throughout.

"Been waiting for this one to drop," one another supporter sarcastically responded. Others replies read: "Thanks for ruining our weekend with this clip," and: "Yay I can relive it all over again!"

Rival fans also jumped onboard. "Absolutely shameless," said one Man United fan whilst another wrote: "Na parody account?????," followed by laughing emojis.

Sack rumours? What sack rumours? Boy can one result change an entire fanbase's mindset.

Five wins and five defeats in the first 11 games, Tottenham in 10th place in the table: things were far from rosy in the garden in N17. Defeat to Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace and Brighton had left Spurs supporters scratching their heads and wondering where the team were going.

Then came Saturday. A trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Pep Guardiola's reigning Premier League champions and Spurs were magnificent.

Everything that was wrong from the 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town was suddenly perfect for the trip to the Etihad. And that was without the first-choice defensive pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven. It was also without the suspended Rodrigo Bentancur.

Spurs ran riot at Man City - yes you read that right - winning 4-0 to inflict City's first home defeat in 53 matches.

Following that defeat to the Tractor Boys, I wrote that Spurs faced a defining run of fixtures that could determine Ange Postecoglou's future at the club. For the first time in season-and-a-half (ish) there were real murmurings of discontent in the fanbase.

Winning the first match, against City no less, in such commanding manner, is the perfect tonic for Postecoglou and Spurs, who moved up to sixth and are just four points off second-placed City now.

It could be that victory at the Etihad Stadium is the platform for Tottenham to kick on now and put a run of results together, just when they need it most, after the most inconsistent of starts to the campaign.

Roma come to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday night, for a big Europa League clash. The Serie A side have a new manager in situ, with Claudio Ranieri in the hotseat.

After that come games against Fulham (home), Bournemouth (away), Chelsea (home), Rangers (away), Southampton (home), Manchester United (Carabao Cup quarter-final at home) and Liverpool (home) before Christmas.

It is a gruelling schedule and one that looked pretty daunting after the defeat to Ipswich before the international break. Now, it looks like an exciting challenge, one that Postecoglou and his team should be relishing. After the win at City Postecoglou said: "We're a much better team this year than last year, we just need to find consistency."

Spurs got off to a near perfect start last season in Postecoglou's first year in charge, toping the table after going the first 10 games unbeaten. This time around, the first 11 matches were as inconsistent as anything Spurs fans have seen before - and that's saying something. If it turns the other way, and consistency is found in the next 27 matches - starting at City on Saturday - things will look very nice indeed come the end of the season.

What Ilkay Gundogan did to James Maddison to set Ange Postecoglou Tottenham masterplan in action

James Maddison enjoyed a dream 28th birthday on Saturday. Having gone into the international break with a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town, a trip to the Etihad Stadium was hardly the ideal return to action for Tottenham.

City were going into the game off the back of four straight defeats themselves, but with Spurs missing their first choice defensive partnership of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, the Tottenham supporters would have been fearing the worst.

But after weathering an early Man City storm, Spurs took control and never looked back. Ange Postecoglou's side had 42% possession - not unheard of for an away team at the Etihad Stadium.

Spurs had nine shots, seven of which were on target, compared to City's 23 attempts, of which only five were on target. But while the stats favour City, as they often do, Spurs managed to keep City at arm's length and made the most of their impressive attacking plays.

It all started in the 13th minute when Dejan Kulusevski beat Josko Gvardiol to the ball on the right, cut inside and whipped a beautiful ball into the superb run of Maddison to volley past Ederson.

But it is what happened in the lead up to that goal that set the tone for Spurs and City.

With Kulusevski on the ball on the right, Maddison was in the middle of the park running to keep up with play. Alongside him was Ilkay Gundogan.

With Maddison aiming to get into the box to meet the Kulusevski cross, Gundogan can clearly be seen watching the Spurs midfielder. But rather than following him into the box, the German decided instead to point to the run of Maddison, leaving him to the City backline and John Stones in particular.

Stones, manning the box, keeping an eye on Dominic Solanke, could only watch as the ball drifted over his head and into Maddison's path to score. Gundogan could and perhaps should have tracked the run of the Spurs man and he may well have stopped the shot. that goal set the tone for the rest of the match, with Spurs pressing high, winning possession and counter-attacking quickly to secure a thumping 4-0 win.

min and three Tottenham teammates did to Timo Werner after statement Man City win

Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham sent out a real statement on Saturday evening with victory away at Manchester City. Not only did Spurs collect the three points on offer in Manchester, they hit their opponents for four in what was a convincing 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Tottenham have endured a mixed start to the 2024/25 campaign in the Premier League but their latest victory highlighted just how dangerous and prolific they can be when everything clicks into place. Such an important game for the team after their dreadful 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town just prior to November's international break, Spurs were coming up against a Manchester City side who had lost their last four games in all competitions.

Having a good couple of openings inside the first 10 minutes through Erling Haaland, City found themselves 2-0 down after 20 minutes courtesy of James Maddison's double. The midfielder, upon his return to the starting XI, opened the scoring with a lovely volley from Dejan Kulusevski's inch-perfect delivery, before doubling his tally with a cute dink over Ederson following Son Heung-min's reverse ball.

Taking a 2-0 lead into half-time at the Etihad Stadium, it was to get even better for Spurs seven minutes after the restart with Pedro Porro finishing off a flowing move involving Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke. City had their opportunities to get back into the contest in the closing stages but Guglielmo Vicario and his defence stood firm and delivered heroic performances to totally nullify the reigning Premier League champions.

It was to get even better for Spurs in stoppage time as Brennan Johnson was once again in the right position to convert at the back post from Timo Werner's cross. Werner had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes after replacing Maddison seconds before the 90th minute.

It was the German at his very best as he seized upon Jack Grealish's loose pass to breeze beyond Kyle Walker and cross the ball for his teammate to finish off. Former Tottenham right-back Walker is known for his blistering pace but Werner made light work of him by sprinting beyond him with ease to get into such an inviting position to tee up Johnson.

At a time when many Tottenham players would have naturally darted over to the goalscorer to celebrate, Kulusevski and Djed Spence, who had also come on at the same time as the left-sided player, immediately went straight to Werner, who at that point was sat on the ground, to congratulate him for his role in the team's fourth of the night. The reaction from the duo spoke volumes about the great play from the 28-year-old.

More praise was to come Werner's way following the full-time whistle as Yves Bissouma went up behind him, grabbed him with both arms and lifted him in the air. Son then made a beeline for him after congratulating a number of teammates on his way towards the jubilant away fans.

TV cameras picked up on the South Korean with his arms raised above his head applauding his fellow attacker as he quite clearly noted Werner's big contribution and wanted to commend him for helping Tottenham wrap up the game in style. The pair shared another touching moment as the team walked off the pitch after the 4-0 win at the Etihad Stadium.

Footage from the stands showed Son walking next to Werner with his arms wrapped around the player and head resting on his shoulder as they exited the field. The experienced attacker then let go of Werner for a couple of seconds before once again putting his arm over his shoulder and then hitting him on the chest a number of times.

That wasn't the end of it as Son, who had a huge smile on his face, got his teammate in a playful headlock and gave him a pat on his head. Werner's season to date may not have entirely gone to plan but his moment with Son just highlighted how popular he is in the camp and that everyone was so pleased to see him make a big contribution on what was a truly memorable night for the club.

Speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game, Postecoglou hailed the "14,15 warriors" on the pitch who helped Tottenham record such an eye-catching result.

“I thought with the way the game was going to go that Madders was going to be important for us," he explained. "Deki always causes City problems out wide. They want to defend one-on-one and Deki is unbelievable in terms of his running capacity when he’s faced up against an opponent.

"I thought today was about the collective, not the individuals, we had 14, 15 warriors out there who played with real courage and conviction and it’s credit to them.”

Hopefully Tottenham's statement win at Manchester City on Saturday evening is a sign of things to come over the next few months as Spurs compete on four fronts.

Gary Neville sends Tottenham 'serious' Dejan Kulusevski transfer warning after Man City rout

Gary Neville has warned Tottenham that after Dejan Kulusevski's stunning performance against Manchester City that Europe's top clubs will be looking to sign him.

The Swedish star was yet again in fine form at the Etihad Stadium, setting up James Maddison's opening goal with a superb cross to the back post, before playing a key role in the third goal, breaking before finding Dominic Solanke, who laid the ball off for Pedro Porro to sweep home.

Kulusevski scored a 9/10 in football.london'splayer ratings for the game, making a big impression throughout the game: "On the right wing and he hit a sublime pass into the path of Maddison for the opening goal. Was then involved in Spurs' third goal early in the second half with a ball across to Solanke. Forced Ederson into a save with a second half run and shot. He just loves to play at this stadium."

However, his impressive performances this season may come at a cost, according to Gary Neville. The former Manchester United defender was effusive in his praise for the 24-year-old, but said the way he has grown as a player this season will alert some of Europe's biggest clubs about a potential transfer for the Spurs star.

"He was brilliant. He was as good as James Maddison. Kulusevski was special out there," Neville said on Sky Sports after the game. "The way he ran past players, with his quality and strength, it was an absolutely fantastic performance.

"Kulusevski was and looks a serious player. He has become a hell of a player. His strength and running power is getting better, but he has a subtlety in beating players. He has a variation to his game now. He is a different player now.

"This is a player that the likes of Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid begin to look at. I am not being disrespectful to Spurs, but that was the level of his performance and he has been like that for a while now. He was outstanding."

Jude Bellingham has described James Maddison's sensational performance against Manchester City as "different gravy" after Tottenham ran out thumping 4-0 winners at the Etihad Stadium.

Maddison scored a first-half brace for Spurs as they responded to that 2-1 defeat to Ipswich with a fine display against an out-of-sorts City, with Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson netting after the break.

Celebrating his 28th birthday, Maddison gave Ange Postecoglou's side the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour after latching on to Dejan Kulusevski's cross before guiding the ball beyond Ederson.

The former Leicester and Norwich midfielder then added his second seven minutes later, playing a one-two with Son Heung-min before lifting the ball over the onrushing City goalkeeper.

It wasn't just his goalscoring that impressed, with Gary Neville hailing Maddison's ability to control the game early in the second half which helped Spurs contain City and score a third.

After the game, Maddison took to Instagram to cherish his success. Alongside a series a photos including one showing his Player of the Match award, Maddison - who boasts over two million followers - said in a caption: "A birthday to remember," alongside a white love heart emoji and a smiling face emoji.

He received plenty of praise in the comments, with Real Madrid sensation and England teammate Jude Bellingham among those to show his appreciation for Maddison. Bellingham said: "different gravy".

Dominic Solanke hailed his Spurs teammate, saying: "What a player," while Guglielmo Vicario added: "So so so happy for you brother," followed by the hands up emoji and the red love heart emoji.

Porro, Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Dane Scarlett and Kyle Walker-Peters also hailed Maddison following a brutal demolition of City, who have now lost their last five games across all competitions.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Maddison said: "It's a special day. I’ve just said in a few interviews that these days don’t come around very often, against the champions, arguably the best team in Europe, Pep Guardiola’s side, so you have to enjoy them.

"Credit to the lads, I thought we were absolutely outstanding today. We dug deep when we had to, we were clinical, we created chances, we had to rely on blocks from defenders, goalie saves… it was everything you want from a Spurs performance. That’s what we want to showcase when we’re at our best level. It was all there.

"I’m really happy, and we’ve got to enjoy the moment. I said to the boys, ‘it’s not often you’ll come to the champions and win 4-0’, so enjoy it. People always talk about the next game, but sometimes you have to sit back and reflect a little and enjoy, then move on. I’m so happy and proud of the boys."

What Maddison and Postecoglou did at the final whistle as Tottenham's perfect plan upset Guardiola

After the final whistle, Ange Postecoglou walked over to the jubilant travelling Tottenham fans who had all remained within an otherwise near-empty Etihad Stadium.

He raised a fist towards them as they sang his name and then applauded them all for making the long, rain-swept and windy trip up to Manchester to sing their hearts out. He knew they had been rewarded for their efforts.

This was meant to be City's big day but Spurs were the party poopers. There was a lavish ceremony on the pitch before the match for Rodri's Ballon D'Or win and the excitement inside the stadium caused by Pep Guardiola's contract extension was palpable.

Yet City and Guardiola have their Kryptonite and it is named Tottenham Hotspur. This was the most brutal takedown of the Manchester side by their north London tormentors yet.

To win 4-0 against the champions is something special. To do it in their own backyard where City have not lost once in all competitions across 52 matches and two years is even more remarkable. It was City's worst home defeat in more than two decades and the first time Guardiola had lost a Premier League home game at all by a margin of four goals.

"When you lose 0-4 there’s nothing to say except to congratulate Tottenham," admitted the Spaniard afterwards.

Spurs were without their first choice centre-backs, were missing six first team players in all and had a bench that featured five teenagers, one of them just 16 in Malachi Hardy and a 17-year-old in Callum Olusesi.

Yet it ended up being a day that was huge for Postecoglou and his side, although it must be built upon if it is to become the night we all look back to as the one when the Australian's era truly kicked into gear.

It was the perfect night to demonstrate that his Spurs and his tactics can compete with the best and that it was away from home showed the players that their record on the road will improve because they will face few sterner tests of their credentials than the champions at the Etihad Stadium.

City could have scored goals - they had 23 shots - but they never felt as dangerous as Tottenham did, despite Guglielmo Vicario pulling off a handful of saves from their five efforts on target.

In contrast, Spurs sent seven of their nine shots on target and could have scored more than the four they did, with Ederson having to make top drawer saves to deny Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski as well as pushing over a Dominic Solanke effort.

Tottenham's goals were all right out of the Postecoglou playbook. The first featured a defender looking for a quick ball out from the back with Radu Dragusin finding the battling Kulusevski with a lofted pass down the right.

The Swede cut inside and curled a pinpoint ball on to the instep of the running birthday boy James Maddison to volley into the net just 13 minutes in to shock City after their bright and boisterous start to the game.

Seven minutes later and Maddison celebrated becoming 28 with a second goal. Spurs won the ball high up the pitch from a loose Josko Gvardiol pass and Maddison and Son played a great one-two, with the latter knocking a clever reverse ball which the midfielder ran on to and chipped over the onrushing Ederson.

Spurs had been in this position before at the Etihad, 2-0 up at the break, before Postecoglou's time but with him at the helm they heeded his mantra and kept on pushing relentlessly rather than sitting back and hoping.

Just seven minutes into the second half, Kulusevski was involved again, dribbling away from his own area, nutmegging Ilkay Gundogan before playing a one-two with Son, and then curling a ball across to Solanke. The ever-running striker pulled the ball back to Pedro Porro, once on City's books, who smashed it into the far corner.

That prompted a Mario Kart-inspired celebration in front of the delirious fans by the players, with a group of them constantly battling against each other on the Nintendo game on the way to matches.

Vicario was called into action a few times after that as Guardiola threw on the returning Kevin De Bruyne and Jack Grealish but it was the visitors who wrapped up a complete performance in added time with a fourth goal as three of Postecoglou's substitutes combined.

Lucas Bergvall got a foot to a Grealish pass which directed it to Timo Werner and the German raced down the left flank past the tired Kyle Walker and pulled the ball expertly across the six-yard box for Brennan Johnson to slide home.

Winger to winger it was another Postecoglou goal to seal a thrashing that left the City players and their fans shocked.

Plenty of praise must go in the direction of Postecoglou. His team played his way and they humbled the champions.

They did so with his tactical tweaks, with Maddison restored to the line-up to cause chaos with his twists, turns and movement and Kulusevski put back on the wing to cause havoc for City's man-to-man marking.

Both full-backs spent less time in the inverted positions, leaving those areas for Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr to profit from and it all worked a treat. That three of his substitutes combined for the final goal was the cherry on the cake.

"I thought it was going to be important for us [getting the wingers heavily involved]. We knew we were going to have to defend at different times and with Deki and Sonny out there, I thought if we could get the ball to them really early, City are pretty aggressive with their approach," explained Postecoglou.

"They like to defend almost man on man because they've got outstanding defenders who like to defend man on man, but I think with Dom there as well, we like that sort of set-up where we can the ball to them earlier.

"That's the theory. The practice isn't always that easy because they put pressure on you and I thought our build-up play today, at times we got a little bit stuck, especially in the second half, but we just persisted and persisted in trying to hit those areas that we needed to.

"Every time we did it in the second half, we looked really threatening and we obviously scored some good goals from it. For us again, it's development as a team, which is about trying to within the context of our football find solutions that exist, depending on the opponent."

Maddison played like a man with a point to prove and he did it perfectly with not only the two superb goals but a performance that contained two dribbles, two tackles, one interception, two clearances and one City shot blocked. He also had an 88.9% pass success rate in the middle of the park.

His confidence visibly grew after this first goal and after the final whistle, the birthday boy and his head coach shared a hug on the pitch with Maddison grinning from ear to ear at whatever the Australian said to him.

"I thought he was really good for us earlier in the season and then he had a couple of flat games but I think the whole team has. I also believe there's more in Madders and I think that's on me. I always say, that's my role as a manager," Postecoglou told the media after the game.

"If I'm not getting a maximum amount out of the players, the team against Ipswich, or individuals, then it's about sort of some self reflection of 'well, ok, can I do something different with them?'.

"But the thing about Madders was he obviously didn't go away on international duty. He had two weeks with us and the coaches worked really hard with him and he was working really hard at training and I could just see and said he was ready for a big game. He hasn't lowered his ambitions or his kind of levels of the kind of player he wants to be and it's about us giving him that platform and it wasn't just his goals today.

"I thought he was really important for us in the build-up because he was always looking for it in tight areas and, and defensively, he worked really hard. So, yeah, credit to him. Like I said, I still think he's had a decent season, but it's like us as a team, we want to be more than that, we want to be more than just a decent team."

Maddison now has eight goal involvements in 12 Premier League games. He made it clear what he thought of his benching in recent games in the competition and he knows he has set the standard for himself with this performance.

"I've been alright. I'm never happy with not playing," the 28-year-old admitted to Sky Sports. "The gaffer took me out for a tactical reason because he wanted Sarr and Kulusevski - two really fit lads who can really go and press for 90 minutes - for a couple of games.

"I've got a lot of self belief and if I go through tough spells of having two games out I’m at the age now where I’m able to go and show you that this team is much better with me in it.

"That is the mindset - not in an arrogant, big-headed way - just the mindset of myself and that self belief. That’s the only way you get out of those little ruts.

"I've actually been really happy with my form this season, been a couple games when I haven’t maybe been at the level, but I watch all the games back and I know when I’m not playing at the level.

"There’s been a couple which in football, it happens, but I’m really happy and proud I bounced back, back in today for a big game, really showed my leadership and the manager will be happy with that so I am."

Tottenham's leaders were there when called upon at the Etihad Stadium. The vice-captain Maddison contributed his goals and play, the busy captain Son an assist and a part in the third goal plus going close himself and setting up Solanke.

Vicario, part of the leadership group, produced one of his best games for Tottenham. Other than an early dropped catch, he dealt with almost everything from set pieces and set his stall out 11 minutes in when saving Erling Haaland's shot with his foot, making further saves from the Norwegian and Ilkay Gundogan.

His best save of the night came from Savinho's point blank header, only for the City man to be flagged offside.

Then there was the growing leader - Dejan Kulusevski. Currently the Sweden captain, the 24-year-old showed once again why Spurs mockingly call it the Dekihad Stadium and he labels it his favourite game of the year.

He was everywhere, curling that sublime pass to Maddison's foot, helping set up Spurs third with his ball for Solanke and then could have scored himself after a jinking run but for the palm of Emerson. The Swede made three key passes on the night.

Kulusevski now has six goal involvements in his four visits to the Etihad and Son has three goals and four assists in his past seven appearances at the stadium. They love it there.

Kulusevski is revelling his time with Postecoglou, saying ahead of the match: "It's been very nice to get to know him. I think he's a very good man and a very good coach. I have learned a lot from him and I agree with his playing style. That's the way I want to play, very aggressive and always the same."

"But of course, we have to improve. What we are doing is not enough. We can see progress in our football but we want to win something this year and we have to see results too.

"It's a challenge for us together - the manager, the players, everyone at the club - to find a way that works. A lot of things we do are perfect. Offensively, we are very good. But we have to defend a little bit better, especially conceding some easy goals from crosses.

"We have to improve a lot on that, but I think we can fix that side of our game and I am enjoying working with the manager. It's an honour for me to work with him."

Another leader in the team was the experienced and usually unsung Ben Davies, whose interception sent Spurs away for their third goal. The 31-year-old brought calm amid the storm in the Tottenham backline, helping Radu Dragusin to his best performance of the season so far. The young Romanian was a rock alongside the unflappable Wales captain.

Davies made six clearances and blocked one shot on the night, while Dragusin made one tackle, one interception, two clearances and blocked three shots. Both won two aerial duels and used the ball well on the whole as City pressed them.

Postecoglou was delighted with the two centre-backs and how the held the line against Haaland & Co.

"I thought they were all great. You have to be against City because obviously they've got big Erling up there, but the way they deliver the ball, the areas they consistently probe, you've got to be focused the whole time and I thought Ben and Radu were really focused, I thought Vic behind them was really positive as well with his positioning and the way they communicated. I thought Biss was important to that," he said.

"I think the key for us was we had to do it as a collective today. I think when you play City, you can't rely on individuals to find solutions out there and collectively, I thought we defended really well, but credit to those two guys and not just defensively, but we had to play out from the back.

"It was the only way we were going to deliver balls to the areas we wanted to and both Ben and Radu didn't shy away from that. It wasn't always easy, but they consistently were looking for the ball and looking for us to play out from the back. So credit to those guys."

Both full-backs contributed with hard-working displays, Porro scoring and Udogie going off late on with a knock bothering him.

Bissouma was excellent in front of them, taking on the pressure of replacing the suspended Rodrigo Bentancur. Just 17 seconds in, it looked like he'd forgotten to turn his brain on for the match with a lunging tackle on Phil Foden which brought an instant yellow card.

However, the Mali international's discipline from that point on was perfect and many City attacks ended at his door. He used the ball well under pressure, regularly taking it in tight areas and switching it out wide as an outlet for the defence. His 93.2% pass success rate was the highest of the starting Spurs players.

Sarr showed his comfort once again in the biggest of games. He was a machine in the middle, covering ground, getting his foot in and gliding away from City tackles at will. Still just 22-years-old, it's clear that he's going to become a Premier League star if he continues on this trajectory

Then there was another rising leader in the group - the leader of the line in fact - in Solanke. The striker gave the City defence a torrid time throughout, battling and pressing and setting up Porro for his goal.

There was not a single weak link in the Tottenham team on the night and that is what you need against a side with City's might.

"That’s the real Spurs today. That’s the one that we train towards, that’s the one we worked towards," said Maddison. "That 90 minutes there is what we want Spurs to be and what we have got to strive to be there more consistently."

Postecoglou told football.london that he's never felt his Tottenham players have doubted his way despite the noise from the outside and this performance showcased that.

"I really think we've progressed as a team. I think we're a better team this year than we were last year, but we've had some real flat spots to say the least that have not allowed us to progress in terms of where we are, in terms of our standing," he said.

"But I've never sensed from the players that they have lost belief in what we're doing. It's very easy to because obviously there's a lot of noise when things don't go well. But today was about doubling down on our football principles and we did that. It is significant because obviously they've got an unbelievable record here at home.

"So I don't think it's something that you can be just sort of blasé about. It is significant, but I think it's significant for the whole group that we've reached these standards before. It's about now not dropping as we have in certain games."

That's the key now for his side because it was classic Spurs that they can pull out a top drawer performance against the champions after having handed Ipswich their first win of the season with a dismal display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There's something growing in this group, the players regularly refer to themselves as "family". They enjoy Postecoglou football and are giving themselves over to it more and more with every passing month.

Yet games like this need to impress upon them just how hard they must work, for they need to produce the same output in a match against Ipswich or Crystal Palace as they do against Guardiola's men. Everybody works hard in the Premier League, so that must be a given rather than a choice.

Postecoglou is adapting as well, making tactical tweaks in games now that the players have the philosophy drilled into them. He admitted the day before the match that he's working on his own communication to ensure the players find the solutions against any team they face.

"I’m always reflecting. I don't think I would have lasted this long if I was just… and I know people try to paint me as one-dimensional, there are certain beliefs that I have that I won’t waver on, but within that process, there’s always things [I adapt], because there’s different challenges wherever you go," he said.

"I just think the games we’ve really got stuck in this year, where we’ve really struggled to find solutions in games, I’m thinking about Brighton second half, Palace and Ipswich, where we didn’t really have solutions out there. The solutions do exist, they exist within our football but maybe the way I’m messaging that - that’s the reflective bit for me.

"To say 'How can I become even clearer' or find a different way of showing the players that when we do get stuck in these moments, because obviously currently how I am doing it hasn’t had the impact I’d hope it would have.

"So there’s always self reflection. I am steadfast and I am clear that I have some really strong principles that I just won’t budge on, but that doesn’t mean I don't feel at times I need to adapt in the way I deliver things or the way I work."

Nights like this show what Postecoglou is trying to build at Tottenham. His press conference after the game was calm and collected, even slightly subdued, eager not to make too much of it.

He is well aware of the inconsistency of this young Spurs team, who can easily get carried away with themselves rather than realising that what brought the win needs to be replicated each week. Tottenham are up into sixth place now, three points off third and four off second, and are by far the Premier League's top scorers.

Yet this was a huge result for Postecoglou and he will know it. It struck a hammer blow to many of his critics and can be used as the shining example of "Angeball" whenever anyone inside the club objects to or doubts what he's asking of them.

It was Postecoglou's 50th Premier League game in charge of Tottenham Hotspur, but it felt like it should be the first of the next level for him and his team. It needs to be the gateway to his new era as a performance that will live long in the memory but as the beginning of something bigger rather than a standalone event.

New Tottenham signing Yang Min-hyeok has confirmed that he will arrive at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier than expected.

The South Korean frontman, who plays for Gangwon FC, is enjoying a well-deserved break now, having finished the K-League season with his club. Gangwon finished the season in second place, following the end of season play-offs, just behind Ulsan.

Yang finished the campaign with 12 goals and five assists to his name, making him the seventh-best player in the league for goals and assists combined. Not bad for an 18-year-old.

Spurs completed a deal to sign Yang in the summer transfer window, with the forward arriving in the January transfer window. But he will join up with his new teammates earlier than January.

With the K-League season now over, Yang is heading off on holiday, but has confirmed he will arrive in England in mid-December, to prepare for January with the first team.

Speaking after the end of the season, Yang said: "I will leave [for England] on December 16. Tottenham wanted me to come over early, so I will take some time off before heading over. I will focus on getting acclimated as soon as possible."

Like with Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, football.london understands the South Korean teenager will be given plenty of time to adapt rather than be rushed into Ange Postecoglou's plans.

Yang will be carefully introduced to life at Tottenham and in the Premier League as he arrives in a new club, league, country and culture rather than be thrown immediately into Postecoglou's matchday squads in January, with the plan always for him to arrive in December ahead of his move.

It's also worth bearing in mind that the 18-year-old is coming to the end of what has been his first season in senior football, one that began all the way back in March and he will have played more than 3,000 minutes of football by the time it ends. To then jump almost straight into a half-season of Premier League football with its pace and power is going to be a big ask physically.
