James Maddison gives honest response to Tottenham omissions

James Maddison says he has got to continue to prove to Ange Postecoglou that his strongest Tottenham Hotspur XI is 'much better' with him involved, as he responded to recent omissions with two goals against Manchester City.

Tottenham's season up to the November international break had been one of mixed results. A most recent defeat to previously winless Ipswich Town had left a sour taste heading into two weeks without football.

The chance to bounce back presented itself at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, and in typical Spurs fashion they took that opportunity without hesitation.

Pep Guardiola's men were sent down 4-0 thanks to a James Maddison brace, plus second-half strikes from Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson.

The scorer of the opening two goals - coincidentally the birthday boy in Manchester - was interviewed afterwards by Sky Sports as he had been left out of Postecoglou's starting line-up for previous league fixtures against Aston Villa and Ipswich.

"I've been alright. I'm never happy with not playing," the 28-year-old admitted, before explaining: "The gaffer took me out for a tactical reason because he wanted [Pape] Sarr and [Dejan] Kulusevski - two really fit lads who can really go and press for 90 minutes - for a couple of games."

Maddison will be hoping to keep his place in the team moving forwards now, and certainly has shown the mentality required to do so with the rest of his response.

He continued: "I've got a lot of self belief and if I go through tough spells of having two games out I’m at the age now where I’m able to go and show you that this team is much better with me in it.

"That is the mindset - not in an arrogant, big-headed way - just the mindset of myself and that self belief. That’s the only way you get out of them little ruts.

"I've actually been really happy with my form this season, been a couple games when I haven’t maybe been at the level, but I watch all the games back and I know when I’m not playing at the level.

"There’s been a couple which in football, it happens, but I’m really happy and proud I bounced back, back in today for a big game, really showed my leadership and the manager will be happy with that so I am."

When Son Heung-min had exited the field he had taken up the captain's armband until being substituted himself. Focusing on the whole team, Maddison's rallying cry was: "That’s the real Spurs today. That’s the one that we train towards, that’s the one we worked towards.

"That 90 minutes there is what we want Spurs to be and what we have got to strive to be there more consistently."

Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for his Tottenham Hotspur players after their 4-0 win against Manchester City and we've got every single word the Tottenham boss said.

James Maddison opened the scoring on his 28th birthday. Radu Dragusin hit a long ball downfield and Dejan Kulusevksi got it, cut inside and struck a perfect ball into the path of Maddison to volley home with his own left foot. The midfielder doubled his tally on 19 minutes as Spurs won the ball high up the pitch and Maddison and Son Heung-min played a great one-two before the midfielder chipped an effort over the onrushing Ederson.

The visitors made it 3-0 early in the second half. Kulusevski curled a ball across to Dominic Solanke and the striker pulled it back for Pedro Porro to smash into the far corner to send the travelling Tottenham fans wild. Tottenham wrapped up a top performance with a fourth goal when Timo Werner raced down the left flank and pulled the ball across for his fellow substitute Brennan Johnson to slide home.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Postecoglou in his press conference after the match. Here's every word the Spurs boss said inside the Etihad Stadium.

Could you have imagined coming here and getting a scoreline like that?

Yeah, you don't come to a place like this thinking that it's going to be probably as convincing as it was for us in terms of just the way we handled it. I've said it before, City test you in every football way possible. You've got to do a bit of everything. You've got to defend, you've got to work hard, be disciplined and you've got to play football.

I thought in all four areas we really got to a really strong level today where the players were really determined, after a really disappointing game last time and we just got back to our core beliefs as a team. Credit to the lads. I thought they were just outstanding out there today.

We knew that in the first 10 minutes they'd come out flying, especially with the four losses they've had were away from home. So being at home, there'd be an energy in the stadium.

We were going to have to weather the storm, which I thought we did fairly well and then we just grew into the game and I'm just so pleased for the players, for the belief they have in trying to play the way we want to and then you get a reward like that. I think it just furthers hopefully our progression.

You've got a number of young players who have performed for you tonight, how big is a night like this for their development?

Yeah I guess so. I said during the week, I really think we've progressed as a team. I think we're a better team this year than we were last year, but we've had some real flat spots to say the least that have kind of not allowed us to progress in terms of where we are, in terms of our standing.

But as I said yesterday, I've never sensed from the players that they have lost belief in what we're doing. It's very easy to because obviously there's a lot of noise when things don't go well. But today was about doubling down on our football principles and we did that. It is significant because obviously they've got an unbelievable record here at home.

So I don't think it's something that you can be just sort of blasé about. It is significant, but I think it's significant for the whole group that we've reached these standards before. It's about now not dropping as we have in certain games.

You just mentioned there doubling down on your football principles, it seemed to be today a very defined game plan to hit your wingers, who were brilliant for you, how would you describe it?

Yeah, I thought it was going to be important for us. We knew we were going to have to defend at different times and with Deki and Sonny out there, I thought if we could get the ball to them really early, City are pretty aggressive with their approach. They like to defend almost man on man because they've got outstanding defenders who like to defend the sort of man on man, but I think with Dom there as well, we like that sort of set-up where we can the ball to them earlier.

That's the theory. The practice isn't always that easy because they put pressure on you and I thought our build-up play today, at times we got a little bit stuck, especially in the second half, but we just persisted and persisted in trying to hit those areas that we needed to.

Every time we did it in the second half, we looked really threatening and we obviously scored some good goals from it. For us again, it's development as a team, which is about trying to within the context of our football find solutions that exist, depending on the opponent.

James Madison has had a bit of a lean spell, what have you seen from him behind the scenes, in terms of character and attitude to turn it into a performance like today?

I mean lean spell, I thought he was really good for us earlier in the season and then yeah, he had a couple of sort of flat games but I think the whole team has. I also believe there's more in Madders and, and I think that's on me. I always say, that's my role as a manager.

If I'm not getting a maximum amount out of the players, the team against Ipswich, or individuals, then it's about sort of some self reflection of 'well, ok, can I do something different with them?'. But the thing about Madders was he obviously didn't go away on international duty.

He had two weeks with us and the coaches worked really hard with him and he was working really hard at training and I could just see and said he was ready for a big game. He hasn't sort of lowered his ambitions or his kind of levels of the kind of player he wants to be and it's about us giving him that platform and it wasn't just his goals today.

I thought he was really important for us in the build-up because he was always looking for it in tight areas and, and defensively, he worked really hard. So, yeah, credit to him. Like I said, I still think he's had a decent season, but it's like us as a team, we want to be more than that, we want to be more than just a decent team.

We probably criticised you defensively in Galatasaray with the same two centre-backs, but what can you say about them today and Bissouma in front of them?

Yeah, I thought they were all great. You have to be against City because obviously they've got big Erling up there, but the way they deliver the ball, the areas they consistently probe, you've got to be focused the whole time and I thought Ben and Radu were really focused, I thought Vic behind them was really positive as well with his positioning and the way they communicated. I thought Biss was important to that.

I think the key for us was we had to do it as a collective today. I think when you play City, you can't rely on individuals to find solutions out there and collectively, I thought we defended really well, but credit to those two guys and not just defensively, but we had to play out from the back.

It was the only way we were going to deliver balls to the areas we wanted to and both Ben and Radu didn't shy away from that. It wasn't always easy, but they consistently were looking for the ball and looking for us to play out from the back. So credit to those guys.

Tottenham Hotspur have just done what no other Premier League side have managed in over two years, beating Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Since November 12, 2022, when Brentford came away from City with all three points, Pep Guardiola's star-studded side have maintained an unbeaten record on home soil. Ange Postecoglou's wiped that slate clean with a stunning 4-0 victory on Saturday evening.

The hosts had dominated those opening minutes until Dejan Kulusevski bullied Josko Gvardiol to first win the ball, then played the perfect cross for James Maddison to hit a 13th-minute sucker punch.

The 28-year-old grabbed his second seven minutes later, stunning the home support, then Pedro Porro's blast and Brennan Johnson's tap-in after half-time completed a fine night in the north west for the north Londoners.

While the result leaves City's title ambitious in an unusually precarious state, it allows Spurs to move up to sixth in the Premier League standings. and look further towards the top four rather than over their shoulders ahead of the upcoming festive period. With that being said, football.london has taken a look at Spurs upcoming league fixtures compared to their closest rivals for European qualification;

December 1 vs Fulham (H) at 1.30pm - Premier League

Spurs' next opponents are AS Roma at home in the Europa League, but after that their next league opposition are Fulham. Marco Silva's side had started the season brightly - but in their first match returning after the international break were beaten 4-1 by relegation-threatened Wolves on home soil.

December 5 vs AFC Bournemouth (A) at 8.15pm - Premier League

Second on the list is a trip to the south coast to face Bournemouth, also marking Dominic Solanke's first trip back to his former club since his summer transfer to Spurs. The Cherries have already taken some major scalps at home this term, beating Arsenal and City no less.

December 8 vs Chelsea (H) at 4.30pm - Premier League

London rivals Chelsea are the visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the third Premier League match of December's opening week. Managing minutes in the two prior fixtures is going to be crucial in order to beat the currently-third-placed team.

December 15 vs Southampton (A) at 7pm - Premier League

Spurs will be big favourites to beat Southampton when they meet in mid-December, though they will do well to remember the lessons of recent poor results against Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace.

December 22 vs Liverpool (H) at 4.30pm - Premier League

In the fifth upcoming Premier League fixture, current leaders Liverpool are the visitors to north London. Arne Slot has got off to a near-perfect start with the club and there will be also the added element of revenge on the cards for the visitors, given what happened the last time the two teams met at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Reds had two red cards that day but, most controversially, Luis Diaz had what appeared to be an onside goal disallowed by VAR. Spurs then won through a Joel Matip own-goal in stoppage time.

Chelsea next five Premier League fixtures:

December 1 vs Aston Villa (H) at 1.30pm - Premier League

December 4 vs Southampton (A) at 7.30pm - Premier League

December 8 vs Tottenham (A) at 4.30pm - Premier League

December 15 vs Brentford (H) at 7pm - Premier League

December 22 vs Everton (A) at 2pm - Premier League

Maddison, Sarr and Kulusevski run riot for Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur smashed Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday in the Premier League and here are our player ratings from the match.

Ange Postecoglou made three changes to his Tottenham team from the side that lost to Ipswich and prevented Spurs from climbing into third place that day. He brought Yves Bissouma in to replace the suspended Rodrigo Bentancur and Ben Davies for the injured Cristian Romero. James Maddison came back into the team on his 28th birthday with Dejan Kulusevski moving up to the right wing and Brennan Johnson on the bench.

The Spurs boss was without his first choice central defenders with Romero out with the the hamstrung Micky van de Ven, meaning Davies paired up with Radu Dragusin.

Maddison opened the scoring with a birthday cracker. Radu Dragusin hit a long ball downfield and Kulusevksi got it, cut inside and struck a lovely left-footed ball into the path of Maddison to volley home with his own left foot.

The midfielder then doubled his tally on 19 minutes. Spurs won the ball high up the pitch after a loose Josko Gvardiol pass and Maddison and Son Heung-min played a great one-two before the midfielder chipped a perfect effort over the onrushing Ederson.

The away side made it 3-0 early in the second half. Kulusevski curled a ball across to Dominic Solanke and he pulled it back for Pedro Porro to smash into the far corner to send the travelling Tottenham fans wild.

Tottenham wrapped up a superb performance with a fourth goal when Timo Werner raced down the left flank and pulled the ball across for Brennan Johnson to slide home.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings from the game:

Guglielmo Vicario

Dropped an early corner but then saved Haaland's shot with his foot 11 minutes in. Made a terrific save from Savinho's point blank header before the offside flag went up. Made a point blank range save from Gundogan with 15 minutes to go and then again from Haaland. City just couldn't get past him. 9

Pedro Porro

Almost gifted Savinho a chance with a poor header back. Was far better after that and more than made up for that moment with a powerful curling strike into the far corner to make it 3-0 to Spurs. 8

Radu Dragusin

Hit the long ball that set Porro away for Spurs' opening goal. Made a great late interception and was imperious throughout. Just what the young Romanian needed. 9

Ben Davies

Made an early block on a Haaland effort and alongside Dragusin led the line as the experienced head. 9

Destiny Udogie

An energetic performance up and down the left with plenty to do in his defending. Picked up a late problem which forced him off in the final minutes. 8

Pape Matar Sarr

A brilliant performance from the young midfielder and he seems at times to be playing in two positions at once, such was the ground he covered. 9

Yves Bissouma

Picked up a yellow card just 17 seconds in for a needless lunge on Foden. Found his discipline after that though and was excellent. 8

James Maddison

Celebrated his birthday with two superb first-half strikes. The first was a left-footed volley on the run and the second was a delicate dink over the onrushing Ederson. His confidence was flowing from then on and he showed exactly what he can do. 9

Dejan Kulusevski

On the right wing and he hit a sublime pass into the path of Maddison for the opening goal. Was then involved in Spurs' third goal early in the second half with a ball across to Solanke. Forced Ederson into a save with a second half run and shot. He just loves to play at this stadium. 9

Dominic Solanke

Forced Ederson into a first half save with an effort from the edge of the box. Never stopped running and got an assist when he pulled the ball back for Porro's goal. Put Kulusevski away for a chance midway through the second half. Such an unselfish performance. 8

Son Heung-min

Had a curling effort from distance just tipped over at the last moment by Ederson. Then played a terrific reverse ball into the path of Maddison for Tottenham's second goal. He then found Solanke for a chance just before the half hour mark. Linked up with Kulusevski in the build-up to the third goal. Came off just after the hour mark following a hard-working performance. 8

Subs

Brennan Johnson

Went early on a run soon after coming on and was well offside as he hit the post but made up for it with a sliding goal in the final moments. 7

Timo Werner

A great late cameo to set up Johnson for Tottenham's fourth goal. 7

Lucas Bergvall

Made the interception that set Spurs away for their final goal. 7

Djed Spence

Replaced Udogie late on. 6

Yellow card

Yves Bissouma picks up a yellow card within 17 seconds for a late tackle on Foden. Just what Spurs didn't need.

Rodri is getting a special presentation at the Etihad in front of the home crowd after his Ballon D'Or win.

Postecoglou has been speaking about Cristian Romero

The Tottenham boss spoke in depth about his Argentine centre-back and what's been up with him recently. You can find that by going right here.

Aguero prediction

Former Man City striker Sergio Aguero believes his old side will come out on top against Tottenham.

Speaking to Stake.com, Aguero said:

The past matches against Tottenham have been quite tricky for Man City but each match is a world of its own, times change for each team. I think we'll see City rally after the shortcomings of the last few weeks. Even if there are a few injuries that still trouble the squad, I am certain our side will come on top.

Team news in just over 10 minutes

We will know the sides in just over 10 minutes' time. Will birthday boy James Maddison get a start as a gift or will he continue on the bench?

Ange Postecoglou has made three changes to his Tottenham team to face Manchester City on Saturday evening in the Premier League.

The Spurs boss has found his options limited in certain areas as he takes his side to face the Premier League champions while Pep Guardiola has a number of his key players back fit and ready to face the visitors. In contrast, Postecoglou has lost yet another one of his big names with vice-captain Cristian Romero unavailable with a persistent toe injury and he joins a Tottenham absence list that includes the banned Rodrigo Bentancur, the hamstrung Micky van de Ven, Richarlison and Wilson Odobert and the virus-hit Mikey Moore.

City do have some problems in central midfield with Mateo Kovacic ruled out for a month, adding to a lack of options in the defensive midfield role with Rodri out for the season. The two sides met last month in the Carabao Cup with much-changed sides with Tottenham coming out on top on that occasion.

From the side that lost to Ipswich and prevented Spurs from climbing into third place, Postecoglou has brought Yves Bissouma in to replace the suspended Bentancur while Ben Davies comes in for Romero. James Maddison comes back into the team for a 28th birthday start with Dejan Kulusevski moving up to right wing and Brennan Johnson on the bench.

Sixteen-year-old Malachi Hardy, the England U17 captain, the only natural centre-back option among the substitutes with Archie Gray also able to play there and 17-year-old midfielder Calum Olusesi is also among the subs.

Here's the team Postecoglou has selected to face Guardiola's men at the Etihad Stadium.

Vicario; Porro, Dragusin, Davies, Udogie; Sarr, Bissouma, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Son. Subs: Forster, Spence, Hardy, Gray, Bergvall, Olusesi, Johnson, Werner, Lankshear.

Manchester City have dominated the English game since Pep Guardiola was summoned to the Etihad Stadium in 2016 and, regrettably for their Premier League rivals, the Catalan is hear to stay. Guardiola put pen-to-paper on an extended contract this week as City eye-up a fifth straight English title.

Liverpool, Arsenal and even Chelsea might have something to say about that. However, while City have swept all before them during the Guardiola years - including a historic treble the season before last - one former player who played for Tottenham and City reckons the north Londoners still have bragging rights in one area.

Ange Postecoglou and his swashbuckling squad will play the champions at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm). If recent meetings are anything to go by, another high-octane match will be in store - not just for both sets of fans - but the neutral as well.

Having split his time in England between those two clubs - spending a year with City from 2007 before signing for Tottenham and totting-up over 100 appearances in the Premier League - Vedran Corluka has a foot in both camps. However, the former defender - who now serves as assistant manager for the Croatia national team - previously stated that fans and the atmosphere created by Tottenham give their side the edge historically.

In a previous interview with Mail Online in 2011, the 38-year-old Croatian said: "I still think that [Spurs are the bigger club]. The fans are a little bit more close to the club here than at City.

"I have nothing against City and I had a great time there, but when I played for City the stadium wasn't always full, whereas here, you never see that."

Corluka, who earned 103 caps for his country, added: "Here, the stadium is full even when we play friendlies, so you can see that there is more passion for the club here than there is there."

Despite their packed trophy cabinet, the atmosphere - or perceived lack of - is a stick with which rival supporters are continuing to beat their City counterparts with. That has been evident once again this season, and is a tag ongoing success under Guardiola hasn't managed to curtail.

We simulated Man City vs Tottenham as Ange Postecoglou handed huge blow

One of the toughest fixtures of the season awaits Tottenham when they return from the international break, with Spurs facing a trip to Manchester City in the premier League.

Spurs fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Ipswich Town in their last Premier League game before the international break, handing the Tractor Boys their first victory of the season as Spurs dropped to 10th in the table. But, just three points separate the Lilywhites from third place, and Ange Postecoglou will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Man City later today.

Spurs against Man City is one of the blockbuster fixtures each year, with the two sides always producing a good game of football. The two sides have already met once this season, with Spurs winning 2-1 at home against Pep Guardiola's side in the Carabao Cup. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven both remain out for the trip to City, meaning Radu Dragusin and Ben Davies will likely start in defence.

So, can Spurs avoid a third defeat in a row later today? Let's take a look.

We simulated Man City vs Spurs to get a score prediction

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions.

We predict that City could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Ederson; Walker, Akanji, Ake, Gvardiol; Lewis, Gundogan; Silva, De Bruyne, Savio; Haaland.

We predict that Spurs could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Vicario; Porro, Dragusin, Davies, Udogie; Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski; Johnson, Solanke, Son.

Spurs got off to the worst start possible at the Etihad Stadium, with Savio's driven cross into the box deflecting off the leg of Dragusin and into his own net, putting the hosts 1-0 up within three minutes. Defensively, Postecoglou's side were a shambles early on, and nine minutes in, they were two goals down.

Savio was once again causing issues down the left, this time with the Brazilian beating Pedro Porro before flashing a shot across goal. Guglielmo Vicario parried the shot away from goal where Kevin De Bruyne fired onto the post, but it was third time lucky for City, with the rebound falling to Bernardo Silva who tapped into an empty net.

City's domination didn't slow down in the first half, and just before the break, Porro pulled down Haaland in the box, resulting in a penalty being awarded. Haaland stepped up to take, and he dispatched his spot kick, making it 3-0 before half-time.

If Spurs wanted anything from the game, a strong start to the second half was needed. But, quite the opposite occurred, and Haaland managed to grab his second and City's fourth as they piled on the misery for Postecoglou's side.

De Bruyne picked out the well-timed run of Haaland as the Norwegian beat Spurs' high line with ease, and some great footwork from the striker saw him ease past the recovering Ben Davies before surging towards goal. One-on-one, Haaland curled his shot around Vicario into the bottom corner, making it 4-0 in just 51 minutes.

The day went from bad to worse for Spurs an hour in when Heung-Min Son was forced off with an injury, and with 20 minute's to go, Porro was sent off after picking up a second yellow card. Despite dropping down to 10 men, no more goals arrived as Spurs suffered a big defeat on the road.

EA FC 25 predicted final score: Man City 4-0 Spurs

18 players could miss Man City vs Tottenham as injury crisis mounts

As many as 18 players could miss Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Manchester City on Saturday evening with both clubs contending with injury doubts ahead of the clash.

The pressure is on Man City to halt their four-game losing streak, which began with the 2-1 League Cup defeat to Spurs in October. Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou will be keen to avoid a third straight defeat, having succumbed to Galatasaray and Ipswich Town before the international break.

He will be without his two primary centre-backs for the trip to the Etihad Stadium, with Cristian Romero ruled out of the encounter after withdrawing from the Argentina squad early.

Micky Van de Ven is not expected back from his hamstring issue, picked up against Man City in the League Cup, until mid-December. There is ambiguity over the fitness of Timo Werner, who missed the defeat to Ipswich with a knock.

Rodrigo Bentancur will definitely miss the contest, with the Uruguayan still barred from action as Spurs appeal the length of the seven-match ban imposed for using a racial slur against Son Heung-min.
