Scotland captain Andy Robertson looks set to stay with Liverpool this month after the English Premier League giants opted to pull the plug on his move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Reports indicate that the 31-year-old was on the verge of completing a £5million move to North London after Liverpool’s final Champions League match against Qarabag on Wednesday, with an agreement in principle reached between the two clubs late last week.

Into the final six months of his contract at Anfield, the experienced left-back has been eyed by several clubs this month, with Robertson available for free transfer after this summer’s World Cup.

However, Spurs manager Thomas Frank had sought to steal a march on his rivals and aimed to complete a transfer this month, with the intention of adding him to his squad for the second half of the campaign.

Negotiations were understood to have been at an advanced stage between all parties, but it has now emerged that Arne Slot’s side has opted to keep their vice-captain on Merseyside for the time being. It is reported that Liverpool’s decision has been influenced by their failure to recall left-back Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at Roma, coupled with a fresh injury to Joe Gomez.

Capped 90 times by the national team, Robertson is expected to lead Steve Clarke’s side out at the World Cup this summer as Scotland end their 28-year exile from the tournament in the United States in June, where they will face Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil in in Group C.

Heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid in the summer after losing his spot to Milos Kerkez at Liverpool, he remains an integral part of the Scotland set-up. Despite starting just four league games at Anfield this term, it is believed Robertson had not been pushing for a move away from the club, although there is an understanding that he would like to play more regularly ahead of the World Cup, according to BBC Sport.

Approaching a decade of service at Liverpool, he first joined the club in 2016, signing for a fee of £8million from Hull City, and he has gone on to win two league titles, two League Cups, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League across a decorated spell on Merseyside.

His time with the club now looks to be edging closer, though, despite his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium being called off. “The relationship between me and the club has been a wonderful one,” said Robertson in November.

“They have done everything for me and my family. I think I've not been too bad for them in terms of signing from Hull for £8million and what I've done. Whatever happens will happen behind closed doors, and I'm relaxed about the whole situation. If it is my last year, then it's my last year. If it's not, then so be it.

“Obviously, I had a bit of a stressful summer in terms of decisions and things like that. I've said to myself to just try and enjoy the next few months and then obviously it will start probably taking over my life. I've got no doubt about that. That's what happens when you go into your last six months.”
