Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Cody Gakpo. But how much is the Dutchman worth to Liverpool?

SoccerNews reports that Tottenham want to sign Cody Gakpo this summer, hoping to take advantage of the change in management at Liverpool. Gakpo was a favourite under Arne Slot, but that won't necessarily be the case under Andoni Iraola.

Article continues under the video

Though, it's a strange one. Gakpo's reputation took a battering this season as he, somewhat unfairly, became the face of Liverpool's on-pitch struggles.

He is a fantastic footballer, however, and one who scored 18 times in Liverpool's 2024/25 campaign. Gakpo's numbers have always been good, in fact, and this is also a player in his peak years who signed a new contract last season.

The Dutchman still managed nine goals and six assists in a difficult campaign. This isn't a case of him delivering nothing.

In fact, Gakpo's seven goals would be second-best for Tottenham in the league. His five assists would have been the joint-most.

So what should he actually cost? Anthony Elanga went for £55m last summer. Tottenham themselves signed Mohammed Kudus for £55m. Noni Madueke moved to Arsenal for £52m. None of those players had scored more than the seven Gakpo managed this season.

Let alone the 18 in all competitions that he managed in 2024/25.

Liverpool, then, should be seeking a fee in at least that range for a player with his record, from the Premier League, in his prime, and with a long contract. Anything less would be robbery, quite honestly.

Cody Gakpo: Situation Summary

Liverpool Campaign and Stats

As of 5 June 2026, Cody Gakpo has concluded a highly testing domestic campaign with Liverpool. The 27-year-old Dutch forward made 36 Premier League appearances under Arne Slot, recording seven goals and five assists. Despite maintaining a consistent presence in the starting lineup, Gakpo struggled to find sustained rhythm, often facing significant criticism from sections of the fanbase and media regarding his attacking output. His season ended with a collective disappointment as the club failed to retain their title, finishing the league campaign in fifth place.

Transfer Request and Atletico Interest

Following the recent dismissal of Arne Slot, Gakpo’s future at Anfield has reached a definitive breaking point. Reports confirm the forward has officially submitted a transfer request, stating he does not envisage a future at the club without the departed Dutch manager. With Liverpool's new hierarchy open to a sale to facilitate a summer squad overhaul, Atletico Madrid have emerged as the primary suitors. The Spanish giants are weighing a move for the Netherlands international as they seek a long-term replacement for Antoine Griezmann.

Why Liverpool want to agree deal for failed Tottenham Hotspur star

Why Liverpool want to agree deal for failed Tottenham Hotspur star - AnfieldWatch
Description

Liverpool could strike a deal for a failed Tottenham Hotspur star. Here's why it might happen.

There have been plenty of reports of late suggesting Liverpool are in for Randal Kolo Muani. Now, the caveat here is that all the reports have come from Italy and it's very possible that they're merely a method to increase pressure on Juventus - also interested in the player - to get a deal done.

But let's pretend that definitely not the case. Instead, let's see why Liverpool might be interested in a forward who has, in no uncertain terms, failed in the Premier League.

Kolo Muani has one league goal this season and that's on the back of 17 starts and 25 total appearances. A truly shocking return from a France international and someone who featured in the last FIFA World Cup final.

So again, why would Liverpool want that? The answer is that they're after a very specific type of forward right now and Kolo Muani is one of the few who fit the bill.

Hugo Ekitike's injury has left them in the lurch. They're overreliant on Alexander Isak to lead the line for them - a player who has struggled badly for any sort of form since arriving at the club.

Ekitike is out potentially into 2027 and that means Liverpool need some sort of cover. At the same time, they're not looking to replace Ekitike - they need someone who can offer a starting role for a long time but, essentially, fill the role of squad player.

And that's ultimately what Kolo Muani offers. He's a striker but also capable of playing on the wing, making him an effective squad option who could not only step in to play Ekitike's role but also play in the same side as him.

On top of that, he's a player in the prime of his career - someone for the right now, rather than a development project. That's key given the necessity for instant impact.

Then there's just the other side of it: judging a player on this Tottenham Hotspur season is harsh. They don't have a squad of truly awful players and we'd fully expect most of them to immediately improve on leaving that club.

Kolo Muani is someone who bagged eight goals in 16 Serie A appearances last season. He's scored goals in France and Germany before that. He's someone who can adapt and score goals in top leagues - just not at Spurs.

So the 27-year-old ticks the boxes Liverpool need and is almost certainly undervalued this summer because of his terrible time with Tottenham. The Reds may fancy rehabilitating him over the next year and potentially get a top player on the cheap.

There are real fears among clubs that Liverpool will strike a deal to sign a Tottenham Hotspur star.

Is €35m too much for Randal Kolo Muani? Juventus don't think so, says Gazzetta Dello Sport, and they're hoping to strike a deal with Paris Saint-Germain to sign the forward.

Article continues under the video

Kolo Muani was on loan at Juventus for the second half of last season and he did brilliantly. Eight goals in 16 Serie A fixtures was a great return - but they weren't able to get him this season.

Instead, the France forward went to Tottenham Hotspur in what has been a disaster. Spurs may actually get relegated this season and Kolo Muani has scored a solitary Premier League goal.

Despite that poor performance, there are fears in Italy that he's off to Liverpool. That's apparently the big fear of Juventus - that the Reds will offer a financial package beyond what they can manage.

There's little doubt that PSG wish to sell this summer and Juve are trying to position themselves for a deal. Liverpool, though, will view Kolo Muani as a possible squad player who could fill the void left by Hugo Ekitike's injury.

And it's worth pointing out that this is merely the latest in a series of reports out of Italy that Liverpool want Kolo Muani. Maybe there's something in that. Or maybe it's an attempt to toy with Juventus a bit in negotiations.

Though there is an angle that makes sense for Liverpool. Kolo Muani is a very talented player, even if he's struggled at Spurs - but everyone should remember that all players are struggling at Spurs right now and they're not all terrible.

The forward is a versatile player who can operate on the flank and through the middle. He's played in several countries now and can deliver goals when it all clicks together.

That is, ultimately, the kind of player Liverpool need to fill in while Ekitike regains his fitness. And €35m may well offer them value for money in this market.

Randal Kolo Muani: Situation Summary

Tottenham Struggles and Exit Strategy

As of 22 April 2026, Randal Kolo Muani’s loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur from PSG has been widely labelled "disastrous." The 27-year-old has managed just one goal and one assist in 25 Premier League appearances, contributing to Spurs' precarious 18th-place standing. While he has fared better in the Champions League with four goals, his domestic form has seen his average FotMob rating drop to 6.31. Consequently, Kolo Muani has reportedly decided to leave North London this summer, having no desire to remain at the club following their dismal campaign.

Transfer Race and Market Value

PSG are ready to permanently part with the forward, who originally joined for €95 million, with his current valuation plummeting to approximately €35 million. Liverpool have emerged as a surprise suitor, identifying him as a versatile option to bolster their attack following a serious injury to Hugo Ekitike. However, Juventus remains a primary contender, relying on Kolo Muani's desire to return to Turin where he spent a successful loan stint in 2025. With his PSG contract running until 2028, a summer move is viewed as inevitable to revitalise his career ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Liverpool will have a lot of tough decisions to make in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Since they've performed so poorly this season, the Anfield outfit will clearly need to make changes to try and improve things next term.

Article continues under the video

This could mean that several members of Arne Slot's first-team squad are shipped out to make room for some new arrivals.

And, since the Reds will need to raise some funds after their £450 million spend this term, it's likely that some Liverpool fans won't be happy with the players who are moved on.

However, if Slot and Richard Hughes manage to sign players who are even better than those that they sell, the club could be good enough to start challenging for trophies and titles once again.

Which, for a team of Liverpool's quality and stature, is exactly what they need to be doing.

Micky van de Ven is ready to leave Tottenham

Liverpool's defence has been one of their main areas to have let them down this season.

Even though Virgil van Dijk has tried his best to keep his team in line, poor performances from those around him have been the only consistent thing about the Reds' defence this term.

Ibrahima Konate, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong all have questions to answer next term with the trio all looking to prove their worth to the Reds' fanbase.

With these poor performances in mind, Liverpool have been linked with several new defenders this season and now, as per an update from FourFourTwo, Micky van de Ven could be coming to Anfield after the recent decision he's made about his future.

"The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been something of a managerial revolving door over the past 12 months," they wrote.

"Spurs parted company with Ange Postecoglou following the team's 17th place finish, and Europa League victory, last term, appointing Thomas Frank as his replacement.

"However, the Dane lasted only six months in the role, replaced by Tudor, whose stint was even shorter.

"Regardless of how Tottenham's season ends, whether it be in survival or relegation, it is expected more of the same will occur with the playing squad.

"Club captain and Argentine international Cristian Romero has been linked with a move to Spain's top flight, meanwhile fellow central defender Micky van de Ven is also purported to be on his way.

"FourFourTwo understands the Dutch centre-back has begun tidying up his off-field affairs in London, signalling that his future lies elsewhere."

Micky van de Ven aligns with Liverpool's transfer recruitment

The fact that Van de Ven has been called an "unbelievable" player in the past proves how good he is.

Even though his performances may not be reflected by the current predicament that Tottenham find themselves in, there's no denying that the Dutchman is an impressive talent.

The defender is only 25 years old and the fact that he can be used as a left back or a centre-back is a massive selling point.

Much like Nico Schlotterbeck, Van de Ven is a versatile defender who could offer a lot more to Liverpool than they currently have.

And, the fact that Van Dijk, Frimpong and Cody Gakpo all play for Liverpool means that he already knows how a lot of Arne Slot's men play which would help reduce the amount of time it takes to adapt.

Indeed, he'd end up costing Liverpool a pretty penny to sign him but, if Liverpool are wanting a successor for Van Dijk and someone to partner Konate for years to come, he'd be an excellent choice.

One of Tottenham Hotspur's stars is apparently ready to join Liverpool.

Randal Kolo Muani is ready to join Liverpool, according to reports in Italy. CalcioMercato.it claim the forward likes Arne Slot’s team and is happy to move there.

Article continues under the video

Importantly, the report also says that the Reds are willing to ‘accelerate’ a move on their end. Kolo Muani is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur from Paris Saint-Germain but is expected to make a permanent move somewhere this summer.

It’s highly unlikely that the club buying him is Spurs, however. They might not even be a Premier League team, after all, while they’ve failed to get the best out of the Frenchman anyway.

Just the five goals this season isn’t exactly the return they hoped for from Kolo Muani. The chances of a permanent deal are now essentially zero - but there’s still a fine player there.

The 27-year-old is a France international who has delivered great numbers in the past. His loan spell with Juventus at the back end of last season was brilliant as Kolo Muani scored eight times in 16 Serie A matches.

That’s what the striker will point to as he looks to secure a new club later this year. And it may well be the figure Liverpool are looking at, too.

Randal Kolo Muani: Situation Summary

Tottenham Loan and Tactical Struggles

As of 21 April 2026, Randal Kolo Muani is enduring a difficult loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur from PSG. The 27-year-old forward has struggled for consistency in a side currently languishing in 18th place, recording just one Premier League goal and one assist in 25 appearances. Despite these domestic woes, he has fared better in the Champions League, netting four goals. His poor league form and Spurs' relegation battle have led to intense scrutiny, with reports on 18 April suggesting he has failed to live up to the expectations of his €95 million original price tag.

Transfer Rumours and Liverpool Interest

Kolo Muani has emerged as a surprise target for Liverpool as they seek a replacement for the injured Hugo Ekitike. Reports as of 21 April indicate that Arne Slot’s side is considering a summer move, with PSG reportedly ready to sell the Frenchman for approximately €22–36 million. Juventus are also linked with a return for the striker, potentially involving a swap deal for Jonathan David. On the international front, Kolo Muani faces a major battle to secure a spot in France’s 2026 World Cup squad, having recently featured as a substitute in a 3–1 win over Belgium.

Tottenham in 'advanced' talks to deliver Liverpool transfer blow

Liverpool could suffer a transfer blow at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur. If they can avoid relegation, that is.

The Athletic reports that Tottenham Hotspur are in ‘advanced talks’ over a deal for Marcos Senesi. The Argentine will almost certainly leave Bournemouth this summer with the end of his contract.

Article continues under the video

Though, this is dependant on Spurs not suffering relegation this season. That’s a very, very real concern and last weekend saw them drop into the bottom three for the first time.

Senesi won’t join them if they go down, so any interest on their part relies on an ability to remain on the top flight and avoid the most embarrassing relegation in Premier League history.

Liverpool have also been linked with Senesi in recent days. The i Paper claims they’re very interested in a deal, though the Athletic’s report suggests they’ll actually miss out to Spurs.

If they can remain in the Premier League, of course.

Marcos Senesi: Situation Summary

Performance and Stats at Bournemouth

As of 17 April 2026, Marcos Senesi has been a stalwart in the Bournemouth defence, appearing in 31 Premier League matches this season. The 28-year-old Argentine has played over 2,700 minutes, contributing to nine clean sheets and recording four assists. His ball-playing ability remains a standout feature, with 1,919 passes attempted at a 78% accuracy rate. Senesi’s resurgence as a regular starter followed the departures of Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi last year, and his consistent form has earned him two call-ups to the Argentina national team during the current campaign.

Impending Free Agency and Transfer Battle

Senesi is set to become one of the most coveted free agents of the 2026 summer window after deciding against a contract extension at the Vitality Stadium. On 17 April, reports indicated that Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as the favourites to sign the left-footed centre-back, with advanced talks reportedly underway. However, any deal with Spurs is contingent on the club avoiding relegation, as they currently sit 18th in the table. Liverpool remain a primary suitor and were considered front-runners as recently as 16 April, viewing him as a direct replacement for outgoing defenders like Joe Gomez. Manchester United and Chelsea also continue to monitor the situation.

Liverpool Transfer News: Reds move in for generational £61m Tottenham talent - AnfieldWatch
Description

Liverpool have recently taken steps to shore up the future of their backline for the long term.

The headline arrivals are Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet - with that pair expected to dominate the defence at Anfield for the next decade or so.

Article continues under the video

Leoni came in for an initial £26m from Parma last summer but his first season on Merseyside has been cut short due to injury. Next season however he will be slotting back into the club’s first-team plans - alongside fellow new arrival Jeremy Jacquet.

The 20-year-old Frenchman will join from Rennes in a deal worth up to £62m - although he too is currently out injured.

Liverpool looking at generational talent Vuskovic

And in the new-look defence we could also see places for younger prospects in the shape of Mor Talla Ndiaye, Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Noah Adekoya - whose signings have all been ratified by Richard Hughes.

🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨

But the changes won’t end there with a report in Sports Boom now claiming that Luka Vuskovic is very much a name in the frame for decision-makers at Anfield.

A deal for the Croatian teenager was initially agreed between Hajduk Split and Tottenham Hotspur back in 2023 for the 6’4 defensive colossus.

Real Madrid and PSG also interested in Vuskovic

The now-18-year-old finally moved to North London last summer for around £12m - and was sent on loan to Bundesliga side Hamburg for the 2025/26 season.

His form has caught the eye of several top European clubs according to the report with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Premier League teams including Manchester City and Liverpool sending scouts to Hamburg.

Indeed the report states that Madrid see Vuskovic as a “generational” talent while Barcelona admire his “elite” ball-carrying abilities.

Spurs to cash in on Vuskovic?

Tottenham are struggling in the Premier League and may cash in their chips on Vuskovic next summer in order to help fund a rebuild.

Under contract until 2030 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium he is valued at between €60m (£52m) and €70m (£61m) according to the report.

Sporting director Richard Hughes has demonstrated in the cases of Leoni and Jacquet that he is prepared to go the distance to land top defensive prospects. And the defensive prodigy - with an unusual goalscoring touch - could be next on the list.
